Snow: Michelle Malkin Is A Soldier In The ‘New Media War’ On Biased Iraq Coverage

MalkinThe American public overwhelmingly opposes Bush’s handling of the war in Iraq and the White House blames the media. Yesterday on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show, Tony Snow vowed to fight a “new media war” to combat the coverage:

HH: All right, yesterday, the President also mentioned that there will be lots of carnage on television screens. Is the administration, and especially the Pentagon, prepared to fight the new media war when that starts to happen, Tony Snow?

TS: We’ve been fighting it. I mean, it’s not that it has started to happen, it’s been going on for some time.

Snow specifically cited right-wing blogger Michelle Malkin, who is currently embedded in Iraq, as a soldier for truth in the “media war”:

What is interesting, Hugh, and you know this as well as anybody else, you’re also starting to see little glimmers of guys like Michael Yon and others who get over there and they basically embed themselves in Iraq, and Michelle Malkin’s over there now.

Several times during the interview, Tony Snow referenced Malkin’s work on the Jamil Hussein “story.”

Michelle Malkin has been obsessed in recent months claiming that Hussein — an Iraqi policeman cited as a source by the Associated Press in a story about the burning of six people during a sectarian attack — does not exist. The Iraqi government recently debunked the conspiracy theory, acknowledging that the AP’s source was in fact a police officer in Iraq.

Oh yes, Tony, use Michelle Malkin as a shining example. She accused the AP of lying about Jamil Hussein. She was saying the guy didn't exist. The AP story was proven to be true, and not only does he exist but he got arrested because of her prying. Way to go, ace reporter. Then she got her phony story about Kerry being shunned by the troops proven completely and utterly wrong.

Tony, you might want to find yourself some soldiers who can shoot straight. That one keeps shooting herself in the foot. Not that we don't find it entertaining. I'm just trying to be helpful.

  6. Johnny Destroyer Says:

Is it entirely necessary for the government to fund and control journalism?

Is it safe? after all, Fox, Cnn, The Guardian, Msnbc....its all owned by Rupert Murdoch, PNAC member...it's not like the president doesn't get Bi-weekly face-time with the guy..

6 burning corpses in Iraq is the least of it, but then again, if thats all the nationally syndicated media will talk about, it's not like we'll know anything else about it.

Didnt the Pentagon already shell out 300 million on "embedded" journalism as well as 1.7 Billion in recruitment advertiseing..

We'll find the truth, and we'll find the recruitment office, without a massive waste of our tax dollars!!!

When the will of the people becomes a threat....

    ...purchase the journalism!!!

Rupert Murdoch, PNAC member, already owns Fox, Cnn, Msnbc, The London Guardian, and the Chicago Sun times, to name a FEW..

He gets Face-Time with the president virtually Bi-weekly, can't they talk about rigging the media then?

Why the press black-out on the war with Iran, after all, thats why we have an admiral heading Cent-Com..

Considering the Government already spent 1.7 billion on Recruitment Advertising, and 300 million on "embedded" journalists....

.....DO we really need them spending our money, to form our opinion?

  9. not the senator Says:

So Tony Snow is referencing 'JamilGate' on wingnut talkshows?

Do you think any of the White House media will have the guts to ask him why he and the CENTCOM PR flack have contributed to the meme that "the American media is lying"? What's their proof? Why are they trying to undermine the confidence in MSM reporting? Is there any evidence that the AP is trying to bias the coverage of the war?

Do you think the White House media will have the guts to stand up for themselves, since their profession and integrity is what's under attack?

No, I didn't think so either.

  20. Technodaoist Says:

Why is it no one notices the fact that warmongers declare war on intangible concepts??? Its simply way to get the populace accustomed to war - which itself is an intangible concept... thereby justifying any and all actions they take - either to destroy the intangible concept of an "enemy" or defend themselves from the perceived "attacks" from said imaginary enemy...

    War on Poverty
    War on Drugs
    War on Terror
    War on Christmas

and now... War on "Media Bias"

Nevermind the fact that it is the (conservative) media that is calling for this "War" - thereby proving their own bias. Does this mean they will attack themselves for their own "biased Iraq coverage"? I doubt it, but they have been known to eat their own...

    Ignorant, arrogant, hypocritical, propagandists.

  38. WC Says:

The main measurement of our success in Iraq seems to center on whether we are winning or losing. Yeah, there have been what I guess you could call milestones which have been reached, such as Saddams capture and the elections and a victory here and there against the insurgents, but they don't seem to matter because we are still there.

As for Tony Snow blaming the media on America's distaste for the war, obviously the hidden message here is that no good news is being reported. I need to remind Tony Snow (and any troll here who dares bitch about no good news) that CBS's Lara Logan has stated...and this is on YouTube if anyone wants to see her report...that the State Department will not allow the reporters to go out in the field and report on the good news stories, such as a new hospital or school opening. The SD fears that the terrorists will then go and destroy it.

And finally, on the subject of winning or losing...Tony needs only to look at himself and the administration he works for when it comes to grasping for blame. In the last 4 to 6 weeks we've had Bush telling us that we are winning, Robert Gates (during his Senate confirmation hearing) telling us that we weren't winning, and Tony himself saying he doesn't know if we are winning, and then questioning a member of the press on "how do you define winning?" I wonder if Tony is prepared to blame Gate's for watching too much TV?

The Bushies are basically reduced to going to the wingnut fringe to find an uncritical outlet for their lies. Even Brit Hume is wavering, so the fringe is all they have.

In a democracy people aren't supposed to me at the mercy of a madman with an apocalyptic vision and delusions of grandeur. But we are. The Democratic Congress needs to put a stop to the latest insanity and start talking about impeachment. Looking to the future is great, but the future is pretty grim with Bush and Cheney in charge.

Einstein defined insanity as 'Doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome.' Sounds like George to me.

  61. Bluestocking Says:

Is it entirely necessary for the government to fund and control journalism? -- Johnny Destroyer

    ***************************

Actually -- as I was saying to someone just last night -- that is the very LAST thing that we want, especially considering who we have in charge right now. In my opinion, put the government in control of the media and what you will end up getting beyond the shadow of a doubt is the former Soviet Union -- or worse, George Orwell's "1984".

I've said more than once -- and I firmly believe it -- that there are more than a couple of people within the Bush administration who to all appearances only need a little help to become living examples of the Party from "1984". By trying to convince the American people that the "Mission Accomplished" banner wasn't orchestrated by the White House when they previously admitted that it was -- when he tried to convince people that Bush's speech did not declare the end of major combat operations -- Tony Snow (or "Squealer" as I call him) was not only lying to the American people but his words were phrased in such a way as to make it obvious that he was trying to make the American people forget what had really happened and accept his version of the events. (That's why I call him Squealer -- because that's precisely what the character of that name in Orwell's book "Animal Farm" always did.) That same sort of ploy is also used in "1984", but to a much greater extent because the Party has authority over the media -- and they use it to destroy any and all forms of concrete evidence which contradict or challenge whatever the Party currently wants the people to believe. In the world of Big Brother, "who controls the present controls the past and who controls the past controls the future." Fortunately for the American people, there are records and recordings which prove that at least one of Squealer's claims about "Mission Accomplished" was a blatant lie -- and at least at present, the government doesn't have the power to confiscate or destroy those recordings. Allow the government to take control of the media, and there's no doubt whatsoever in my mind that all that would change.

I love it when Michelle whips you guys into a frenzy LOL its like your about to pee yourself your so whipped up. The best you can do is try to take it to a Jerry Springer contestant level.

Michelle Malking liberal butt every time they cannot handle a debate with her on a logical level.

I guess we must have pushed YOUR buttons, huh? It seems you get all worked up into a lather reading Thinkprogress. I take it from the content of your meaningless taunts that you have no idea what the news item was about, except that you saw the name Michelle Malkin.

When you think you have something that even approaches any kind of a "logical level", you just come back here and try it out. So far, you've failed to impress.

That picture is the only one I've seen where she didn't either look like a corpse or have her mouth wide open, spewing drivel. Usually, it's the expressionless corpse face. It took a Hollywood special effects team to get her face to look like it was smiling. They were able to get one quick picture before the latex ripped apart.

"Why did that german Fahrenheit come up with such a complicated temperature scale?????? I dont understand: 32 °F and water freezes at sea level, right? So, you must be…goshhh, really cold. :[" - Jaun C

"Fahrenheit based his zero degrees on the coldest day in winter and 100 degrees on either his own body temperature or the hottest day in summer." - WaltTheMan

WaltTheMan is correct according to Wikipedia although there are a couple other stories as to how he calibrated it. Juan, it is a very odd scale but Anders Celsius came up with another odd scale - 0 degrees Celsius was the BOILING point of water and 100 was the melting point. Shorlty after Celsius died a Swedish botonist reversed the scale as did numerous others. The scale still had the Celsius name though. The oddity of the Fahrenheit scale is just one example of odd scales being made. The metric system, incorporated into the SI units gets rid of alot of the oddity in scales. It's too bad the whole world could't switch to SI units.

  113. Lora Says:

#85 JP, #86 big papa, and others who have commented on her looks,
I once saw a website maybe three or four years ago, before I even knew who Michelle Malkin is, showing an old photo of her as well as the one posted here, which has apparently been taken from her own website. The site I looked at surmised that she had had plastic surgery to make herself look a bit more Westernized. It did appear that way, since her features in the old photo looked more Asian than they do now.
I don't particularly want to criticize a person for having plastic surgery. However, considering her debunked baseless defense of the internment of innocent Japanese-Americans during WWII, she certainly doesn't seem to have much sympathy for her own Asian race--what I believe some Asian-Americans call a "banana": yellow on the outside, white inside.

Rice: Bush authorised raids on Iranians in Iraq

Washington & Bahghdad: Recent US military raids against Iranians in Iraq were authorised by President George W. Bush under an order for a broad offensive against Iranian operatives in the country, the New York Times said on its Web site on Friday.

"There has been a decision to go after these networks," the Times quoted Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice saying in an interview conducted on Friday before leaving on a Middle East trip.

She said Bush issued the order several months ago "after a period of time in which we saw increasing activity" among Iranians in Iraq "and increasing lethality in what they were producing."

The Bush administration has long accused Iran of interfering in Iraq, including providing weapons and training to Shi'ite forces.

But US military officials and Iranian exiles say there is increasing evidence that many of the most sophisticated roadside bombs being used against US troops are produced in Iran.
