Bush: Americans Sacrifice ‘Peace Of Mind When They See The Terrible Image’ Of War On TV»

Last night on the PBS Newshour, Jim Lehrer asked President Bush why he hasn’t called on Americans — besides those serving in the volunteer military — to sacrifice something to help our country in this time of struggle. Bush claimed Americans are sacrificing: “They sacrifice peace of mind when they see the terrible image of violence on TV every night.” Bush explained that “the psychology of the country…is somewhat down because of this war.” Watch it:

Like Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), Bush said that he would “strongly oppose” raising taxes on the wealthy to help offset the increasing costs of war in Iraq because he wants “people to feel like their life’s moving on.” The Wall Street Journal reports, “The growing financial strain of Iraq will be spelled out as never before in a series of defense and war-related spending requests by the White House next month, expected to total more than $700 billion through Sept. 30, 2008.”

Digg It!

Full transcript:

LEHRER: Let me ask you a bottom-line question, Mr. President. If it is as important as you’ve just said - and you’ve said it many times - as all of this is, particularly the struggle in Iraq, if it’s that important to all of us and to the future of our country, if not the world, why have you not, as president of the United States, asked more Americans and more American interests to sacrifice something? The people who are now sacrificing are, you know, the volunteer military - the Army and the U.S. Marines and their families. They’re the only people who are actually sacrificing anything at this point.

BUSH: Well, you know, I think a lot of people are in this fight. I mean, they sacrifice peace of mind when they see the terrible images of violence on TV every night. I mean, we’ve got a fantastic economy here in the United States, but yet, when you think about the psychology of the country, it is somewhat down because of this war.

Now, here in Washington when I say, “What do you mean by that?,” they say, “Well, why don’t you raise their taxes; that’ll cause there to be a sacrifice.” I strongly oppose that. If that’s the kind of sacrifice people are talking about, I’m not for it because raising taxes will hurt this growing economy. And one thing we want during this war on terror is for people to feel like their life’s moving on, that they’re able to make a living and send their kids to college and put more money on the table. And you know, I am interested and open-minded to the suggestion, but this is going to be -

LEHRER: Well -

BUSH: — this is like saying why don’t you make sacrifices in the Cold War? I mean, Iraq is only a part of a larger ideological struggle. But it’s a totally different kind of war, than ones we’re used to.

  1. Humprey Doolittle Says:

Bush is a fool he dont even know how to spin smoothly

  2. upside00 Says:

    WTF!!!!!

Peace of mind?? WOW, what a great sacrifice, and we sure wouldn’t want those Corporate Scumbags supporting this Cabal to suffer any more.

Let’s just have the troops carry all the death and injury and missed time with families. Wouldn’t want any “real” people to feel it.

What a bunch of elitist crap from Dubya and his whole merry band of NeoCon assholes!

    WAKE UP AMERICA!!!

  3. DallasNE Says:

So John McCain is another borrow and spend conservative. No surprise there. McCain will say or do whatever he thinks it takes to become President. Personal ambition is the wrong reason for wanting to become President, a lesson McCain has not learned. We have had enough of that with George W. Bush.

  4. DRxJ Says:

we’ve got a fantastic economy here in the United States

Delusions of grandeur are a symptom of certain psychosis, like schizophrenia.
    I’m just sayin…

  5. RealityCheck Says:

If you bankrupt the government through endless war it will shrink down small enough so that you can “drown the baby in the bathtub,” to paraphrase the notorious quote of arch neoconservative Grover Norquist.

Of course, there will be no money left for useless government services like health care and education that people can and should take care of themselves if they would just get to work, like we Republicans do.

And what about the elderly and the sick?

Well, if they had just planned like we Republicans do, they wouldn’t have to worry about it. It’s just social Darwinism, pure and simple: survival of the fittest: we white collar aristocrats.

    What about innocent children?

They are the responsibility of their parents (after the neonates are too old to be aborted, of course. Before that, it’s all about church and government interference in individual liberty.) Lock their parents up if they don’t take care of them. We’ll always be willing to fund more prisons.

P.S. - Oh - but don’t even THINK of cutting OUR benefits! (Remember the hue and cry when Gingrich shut down the Federal government? It’s always someone else’s part of the government that needs to be eliminated.)

There’s a simple, easy, and extraordinarily applicable word for most Republicans that is not nearly used enough: SELFISH.

  6. midwestblue Says:

Yeah, like that sociopath knows anything about psychology.

  7. Tom Says:

So GDumbya thinks that Americans are sacrificing peace of mind but he also tells us that he sleeps well at night. GDumbya has no peace nor piece of mind to sacrifice. Impeach the bastard . . . and the real president, too!

  8. BS Says:

Give the American people some credit. I’ve been sacraficing ‘peace of mind’ ever since this guy was elected.

  9. s Says:

    Condescending Bastard.

    He is saying….just don’t watch….just don’t think…..just chill

    Peace of mind.

( uh……and keep your hands over your eyes while I destroy you, your rights, your country, the world, and everything decent and fair.)

  10. Kat Says:

I, and virtually everyone I know, sacrifice peace of mind when the Decider speaks in public, on tv, in front of the world. This jack azz embarrasses America all on his own on a daily basis, and that sacrifice , of peace of mind, gets tougher to stomach every day that he remains in office.

…”he wants “people to feel like their life’s moving on.” How do we achieve that, during a “freedom stagnation”?

    Unbelievable

  11. Mike Hunt Says:

With each passing day, as this idiot continues to use and waste earth’s natural resources, I wonder how any of the 59 million people who voted for Bush in 2004 can look themselves in the mirror each day. What on earth will it take for people in this country to demand that he be removed from office? Bush is obviously so far removed from reality that only drugs can be keeping him in a semi lucid state. He’s beyond dangerous …..and to think that his party beat a path to the well of the House of Representatives to bring articles of impeachment for lying about a sloppy blowjob. Not sure about you but Bush makes me ashamed to be an American. Absolutely and utterly ashamed.

  12. P O'Neill Says:

The line about the egg is worse.

  13. Zooey Says:

    Oh. My. F*cking. God.

What planet is he on!? We’re at war! There is no peace of mind!

  14. upside00 Says:

Sure is good to see that Dubya didn’t waste his education at Yale on learning anything about social justice, economics, world history or environmental studies.

Was too busy partying like his daughters Jenna and not-Jenna, playing cheerleader and goosing his fellow Skull and Boners.

FU Dubya!!! Hope you, Barney and Prozac Laura keep on not losing any sleep over this. And of course the Cheneys have to suffer by looking at each other every morning, now THAT would be cruel and unusual suffering for anyone.

  15. PeterW Says:

Wow, he’s basically saying “You’re sacrificing because the war is harshing your buzz”.

So much for the “grown-ups” being back in charge.

  16. Zimzone Says:

Is he beating around the Bush again?
Defending the indefensible is hard work.
Don’t want anyone missing a tax cut.

Mr. President, I’m not rich enough for a tax cut.
    Is that my sacrifice?

This guy makes Gerald Ford look intelligent.

  17. Jay Randal Says:

Bush loves the wealthy only, so they are exempted from paying their share of the taxes. Plus they make money off the war by owning stock in Defense industry companies.

  18. tarazan Says:

I wonder what families who lost a member think about such an answer !!!…The answer does not match the question, drifting far away from the question which was centered on soldiers killed in Iraq. Bush thinks that ’sacrificing peace of mind’ is equivalent to sacrifices payed by soldiers in the battle field..or losing tax dollars are the same….so if you lose peace of mind..that means you sacrified for this war..!!

  19. DRxJ Says:

“They sacrifice peace of mind when they see the terrible image of violence on TV every night.”

This may be the absolute, most asinine statement this so-called president has EVER said!

Yeah, dubya, gawd forbid that actual images of death and destruction interrupt my viewing of “24″ or “American Idol”

    IDIOT

  20. Yikes Says:

“Well, if they had just planned like we Republicans do, they wouldn’t have to worry about it. It’s just social Darwinism, pure and simple: survival of the fittest: we white collar aristocrats.”

RealityCheck, good post. I especially liked the above statement because when it comes to welfare, the republicans like to use the word Darwin in defense of thier policies. I’ve heard this before. Of course, when it comes to the meat and bones of Darwin’s contribution to science, the republicans are quick to brush it off as garbage. Hypocrites.

  21. Jay Randal Says:

Bush thinks sacrifice means keeping his 2 daughters in South America drinking and whoring. Dubya has no idea what pain is caused to a family by losing a son or daughter in Iraq or them coming home missing legs or arms or both. Shame on Bush and he must resign or be impeached!

  22. ForTruth Says:

Bush is a bigger moron today.

Future generations will make the sacrifices, a-hole.

  23. Erroll Says:

“They sacrifice peace of mind when they see the terrible image of violence on TV every night.” That statement is disengenuous. Those images are rarely seen with the same graphic honesty that was shown during the Vietnam War. During the Vietnam War, Americans were shown the images of soldiers dead and dying and being grievously wounded and maimed and crippled. The television news shows today will show bombs going off and explosions in Iraq but those will be of the damage done to the Iraqi populace. But even those images are usually seen from a distance. Where are the images of medics rushing to the aid of soldiers who have been injured by an IED explosion? Or the corpses of Iraqis being placed in outdoor morgues? Despite Bush’s contention, these images are not shown because, to quote Barbara Bush, the networks do not wish to disturb the beautiful minds of most Americans in this country.

  24. Zooey Says:

What the f*ck does this mean?

On Iraq, Bush said, “I don’t quite view it as the broken egg; I view it as the cracked egg … that — where we still have a chance to move beyond the broken egg.”

Did anyone see the whole interview? Did Lehrer’s eyes pop out of his head?

  25. klyde Says:

Anyone recall the dustup that occured when Ted Rall did the comic comparing the boy king to a mentally retarded person? Ted always was ahead of his time.

  26. Juan C Says:

But it’s a totally different kind of war, than ones we’re used to

    Piece of sh*t.

  27. trueblue Says:

So I guess the ‘yolk’s’ on him!

Delsuional idiot and his evil sidekick.

ah……..folks. I’m sorry. But we’re caught in a “loop” here.
I am tired, as I’m sure all of us are, of this pattern:

    1. outrageous Bush story
    2. WTF reactions abound.
    3. repeat steps 1 and 2.. then to step 3 again

What is step 4? That is the question…….seriously

  32. RUCerious Says:

Let’s honor the wife of dead president Reagan and just say no.

    Comment by Zooey — January 17, 2007 @ 10:43 am

Zooey, methinks he’s losing it (lost it).
We dispense hundreds of anti-psychotic meds every day here. I’ve got a few to suggest for Emperor Bush’s personal doctor.
(Of course, that’s if his insurance coverage will allow them to be dispensed…Heh)

  34. Jay Randal Says:

Cracked eggs cannot be mended, and are thrown into the garbage, so Bush is clueless about everything. Has Dubya ever cooked a meal for himself ever in his entire worthless dumb life? Bush is a certified dunce!

  35. yowzer Says:

so we, the rabble get to pay in blood and debt as far as the imagination can go for the peace of mind of the ultra wealthy. Now I really feel better about bush’s ultimate FUBAR.

On Iraq, Bush said, “I don’t quite view it as the broken egg; I view it as the cracked egg … that — where we still have a chance to move beyond the broken egg.”

I think what GDumbya means is “things aren’t as bad as folks think they are but give me a little more time and I can make them worse”.

GDumbya really shouldn’t lay himself open to these unscripted interviews. They really expose the depths of his ignorance.

  38. ed Says:

I sacrifice my peace of mind every time I see this madman acting in the role of President of the United States. My “psychology” is down because of the endless blundering of this madman and his mendacious supporters.

    Well said, Juan.

Is there any type of war we get used to having? Idiot.

  40. TripMaster Monkey Says:

The disconnect between Chimpy’s Imperial Neocon ambitions and the hard reality us mere mortals have to slog through has reached epic proportions.

Chimpy won’t raise taxes because he wants “people to feel like their life’s moving on”??? Tell that to the 3000+ American soldiers who have come home in flag-draped coffins. Tell that to the 23,000 American soldiers who have been maimed for life as a result of your Imperialist war. Tell that to the families of these dead and wounded soldiers. And, lest we forget, tell that to the Iraqi people, who have endured, and must continue to endure, horrors that Saddam could only dream of as a result of this illegal and immoral occupation.

The time to impeach is not now. The time to impeach was two weeks ago. Every day the Democratic-controlled Congress fails to initiate impeachment proceedings against Chimpy, Cheney, and the rest of the neocon scum that have hijacked our country, they indict themselves further as accessories to their crimes.

And make no mistake…every day you fail to do all within your power to make your voice heard, you are implying your consent. Silence implies consent. It’s time to stop being silent.

  41. Fools on the Hill Says:

    Lehrer’s expression was WTF.

Humpty Dumpty…. and all the King’s men could not put him back together again.

Metaphors: A cracked egg is not as bad as a broken one. It can be super glued, painted and used in a easter egg hunt. A broken egg can’t be put back together. At best a broken egg can be cooked and fed to Barney.

I’m pretty sure that’s what the President was trying to teach us about the Iraq war.

  42. tarazan Says:

#25 –zooey, that means, the egg is dripping thru your fingers,no breakfast or cake is possible to make…get U a tamale, and wait until I glue the egg shell for you.

  43. Zooey Says:

    #34 - DRxJ
    #38 - Tom

Each scenario is equally likely. GWB is going to do a lot more damage in the next 2 years, if we don’t get him out of there.

  44. BSS214 Says:

Umm, George, you can’t fix a broken egg…

…No matter how much duct tape you use.

Nope, band-aids won’t to it either.

    1. outrageous Bush story
    2. WTF reactions abound.
    3. repeat steps 1 and 2.. then to step 3 again

What is step 4? That is the question…….seriously

Step 4 is to take action to make your voice heard…not just here, in the relative safety of fellow rational thinkers, but everywhere.

Write your government representatives…ALL of them. Keep writing them on a regular schedule. Make it clear that you won’t go away until Chimpy does.

Print up flyers and burn CDs, distribute. Get the word out. Not everyone in the country knows the extent of this administration’s crimes…but most of them, if they were properly educated, would be as hopping mad as we are. Make an effort to reach out and communicate.

Join like-minded citizens in your area and organize protests. Be loud. Be rude. We got in this mess in the first place by being too polite to object when Chimpy and his cohorts stole the Presidency. The time for civility is past.

If anyone can add to this list, I would welcome and appreciate the input. We all need to do whatever we can to get our country back.

  48. Juan C Says:

Zoo, true. Im off. Take care. :)

  49. Jay Randal Says:

In the market when you buy eggs, you check to see if any are cracked, and if one is cracked, you look for another carton. Bush would probably buy a dozen cracked eggs and eat them raw > heck he would get food poisoning anyways.

  50. Rosencrantz Says:

Allow me to translate this latest Bushism.

The administration is telling people a certain message of happiness and “America…F*** YEAH!”

The media is mostly parroting that exact same message, but every now and then a responsible channel, commentator, or program tells and shows people the truth.

This causes people to sacrifice their peace of mind because it creates a mental conflict. The conflict between what the the administration is telling us (whom we are supposed to trust, be loyal to, never doubt), what the media is telling us (the president is great, divine but for some reason Iraq isn’t cooperating) and what our own eyes and rational thinking tells us (chaos in Iraq, thousands dead and injured, no plan, etxc).

Then again. Americans sacrifice their intelligence every time they hear the Bush admin speak…so this is nothing new. Only the faithful %30 are able to avoid this conflict because their mind automatically blocks both reality and reason.

  51. criticalthinker Says:

    Me takling to Bush:

If this war is NECESSARY, why do you not ASK your daughters to perform that same sacrifice that you COMMAND of other people’s daughters?

If you are not willing to ask them that question, that OBVIOUSLY you do not think this war is NECESSARY!

I am sure soldiers in WWII understood that the war was NECESSARY because another nation DID attack us first.

I am sure soldiers in this war understand that the war is UNNECESSARY because another nation DID NOT attack us first.

  52. Preznit Pinhead Says:

AHAHAHA! Brave men & women are sacrificing arms, legs, innards, sanity and their lives, while teevee-addicted Americans are sacrificing their peace of mind.

    Wow.

Can we haul this criminal bunch squatting in our Whitehouse away in the paddywagon yet?

  53. trueblue Says:

    Have a great day, Juan.

  54. SouthWest Bob Says:

This president has lied so much that he now lies whenever he opens his mouth. It is becoming increasing obvious that he cannot discern between “his world” and reality.

It appears to me that rove/cheney have decided that they repubs are best served by allowing bush to get out and show the world that “he’s the problem.” (Which with bush’s ego is not apparent to him.) This will allow the repubs to distance themselves from the “bush failures” and insist that they should not be held responsible for the failures of such an obvious idiot. However, they will have a difficult time doing so over the next two years. My guess is that the efforts to show bush as a failed leader will continue over the next two years but not at such a pace as to remove him from office before his term ends, but allow repubs to say, “Blame him not us!”

  55. Unholy Moses Says:

Last I checked, if I see something I don’t like on TV, I can change the channel.

Military families, on the other hand, can’t push a button and bring their loved ones back … a Soldier or Marine can’t push a button and make a limb reappear … and the Iraqi people can’t push a button and put their country back together.

I, on the other hand, will push a button every time I see the Decidecator’s face on TV — the mute button.

  56. Smedley Says:

‘.. that they’re able to make a living and send their kids to college and put more money on the table.’

I ususually put food on the table to eat. When money goes on the table, it’s usually to gamble.

  57. Heterodoxy Says:

This is a significant glimpse behind the curtain and hagve been waiting for MSM to ask the obvious question the entire delusuion.

If you buy the lie espoused by Bush that our safety, mind you, all of the civilized world is at stake here then where is the sacrifice?

During World War II all of our resources and people were rallied for the purpose. Bush gigves out 1.2 trillion in tax breaks and suggests you gvo shopping.

    There you hagve it folks;

    LIES, LIES, LIES

  58. Humprey Doolittle Says:

Obama is ready to enter race for president

Barack Obama, the Democrat senator who has emerged as the brightest new star of US politics, has at last dropped any pretence and indicated for the first time that he intends to run for the presidency in 2008.

  59. Jay Randal Says:

A former housekeeper for the Bush family has told the press that Bush Junior wets the bed even as an adult. Dubya has serious emotional problems, so he needs therapy and not being our president!

  60. Tom Says:

‘.. that they’re able to make a living and send their kids to college and put more money on the table.’

Perhaps you have forgotten another one of GDumbya’s famous lines about “putting food on your family”. In GDumbya-world, tables are for money and families are for food. LOL

  61. Tom Says:

A former housekeeper for the Bush family has told the press that Bush Junior wets the bed even as an adult. Dubya has serious emotional problems, so he needs therapy and not being our president!

He’s in such a drunken stupor when he goes to bed that a set of full kidneys isn’t enough to wake him up. LaLa is so zonked on martinis and Prozac that she’s no help at all.

GDumbya’s “therapy” for his bed-wetting problem is to be a “War President” — typical “small-man complex”.

  62. theswan Says:

“Peace of mind” is just more than the republicans are willing to sacrifice.
Seeing that the president has no mind he sacrifices nothing.
    Convienent.

  63. Liberty Lover Says:

On Iraq, Bush said, “I don’t quite view it as the broken egg; I view it as the cracked egg … that — where we still have a chance to move beyond the broken egg.”

The difference is that with a cracked egg, the white part of the egg slowly seeps out of the egg until Bush gets out of office so he doesn’t have to declare defeat…but in the mean time, it rots from the inside out and produces that lovely rotten egg stick that surrounds Bush…either way, the egg is still broken…

Time to make an omelet and Beat it out of IRAQ.

  64. Zimzone Says:

Amen to that, brother! And when the people voted this ass into office (twice), they sacrificed what little intelligence they may have had.

  70. Jay Randal Says:

Tom > The White House has the best stocked liquer cabinet in the world, so when Laura falls asleep, then Dubya can chug the liquer. Bush is not a dry drunk > he is a real drunk and it shows on his face.

  71. bluestatedon Says:

Jeez, if only Americans had been able to watch “terrible images of violence” on TV every night during WWII, that would have been sacrifice enough! We could have avoided all that tedious gas rationing, all those interminable rubber and metal collection drives, buying those stupid war bonds, or enduring those awful blackouts. Instead, we could have all gone shopping—I’m sure we could have vanquished Hitler in half the time!

  72. Tom Says:

Jay Randal –> I agree completely. Here’s an excellent article about the “cost” of GDumbya’s binges.

  73. VerbalKint Says:

Bush’s cocked head and half-smirk, half-smile in this photo reminds me of a certain type of junior high school boy, the not-very-smart smartass, when he has been busted doing something wrong, has just finished telling the vice principal a pro forma lie, and with this phony, pathetic “won’t you believe me?” grin pasted on his face, watches as the VP reaches for the telephone to call his parents.

  74. ForTruth Says:

Yeah, we wouldn’t want our insulated little society to see whats going on out in the rest of the world. We might not shop as much.

  75. MinorRipper Says:

  76. nanlichi Says:

To the Bush family, piece of mind is all important. Anyone remember Babs saying that she didn’t want to mess her pretty mind worrying about body bags?

This President needs a broadhead through the guts. Maybe his fu*king mother would worry her pretty head if it was her Boy George in a body bag?

Maybe not. Maybe if it were Jeb.

F*ck the Bushes in the ass until they collectively bleed to death.

  77. ForTruth Says:

Can we call him “Bush the bedwetter” ewww.

  78. S.D. Says:

I marvel at the extreme stupidness demonstrated by Pres. GW Bush…

He thinks fretting over IMAGES on TV is a “Sacrifice”?

Did he just compare the sacrifice of our soldiers lives to getting stressed over the Economy and IMAGES on TV??

    Un-Freaking-Believable…

    Comment by Zooey — January 17, 2007 @ 10:51 am

Idiot indeed. As if this country executes a full scale war every 5 years.

In 40 years of living, we’ve only had one war (prior to the current one) that I was fully cognizant of. Yes, George, that war your Daddy started in 1991, known as Gulf War I, sure did spoil me. You remember, don’t you? The war in which your Daddy refused to go into Baghdad and remove Saddam for fear of getting us bogged down into a hopeless situation, kinda like the one you’ve gotten us into?

Bush, like Homer Simpson, somehow manages to grow stupider with each passing year. What I don’t understand is how his loyal followers, the religious right, got to be so stupid. How could anyone with a functioning brain believe a word this liar says?

  82. DallasNE Says:

Not directly related but a potential direct impact.

AG Gonzales is again threatening the courts.

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16668110/

The funny thing is that every law passed is passed to implement policy. Carrying Gonzales argument out one could say that the Supreme Court should not pass judgement on anything the President signs into law, including signing statements. So, why even have courts given that line of “thinking”?

  83. Briseadh na Faire Says:

“The growing financial strain of Iraq will be spelled out as never before in a series of defense and war-related spending requests by the White House next month, expected to total more than $700 billion through Sept. 30, 2008.”

Bush wants to borrow and spend nearly SEVEN BILLION DOLLARS EACH WEEK on his War over the next two years. This money will be in supplemental bills, thus not reflected in the “official” budget deficit.

Bush won’t raise taxes to pay for His rampant War Spending. That, too, will be left for some future president to figure out, while Bush can claim the economy was in great shape, fueled by Bush’s borrowed spending to artificially inflate Wall Street and boost the Corporate earnings of the War Profiteers.

I keep getting the feeling that if Congress refuses Bush’s spending requests, He will treat that refusal as merely advisory, and divert money from social programs to continue to pay for His War.

I fear that you’re right, Briseadh, although I also fear that events in Iran, Israel, and the Persian Gulf in the next six to eight weeks will render that moot, when this country is again gripped by rampant hysteria, irrational hatred, and rabid patriotism.

We have one chance to avert this…impeachment proceedings must get underway before this comes to pass.

Sad to say, but I think we’ve reached the point (probably long ago) where everything this administration and its members does is related. From Bush mouthing off about something, to Cheney shooting a guy in the face and refusing to be interviewed by local police, to the AG taking some foolish legal stand as it relates to the administration, etc.

It’s all related to one thing: this administration is an utter and complete failure.

  86. Briseadh na Faire Says:

In remarks prepared for delivery Wednesday, Gonzales says judges generally should defer to the will of the president and Congress when deciding national security cases.

In short, if the Will of the President and the Republican Congress (as expressed in the Military Commissions Act) is to destroy the Constitution in the “Name of National Security” the federal judiciary should just step aside and let them.

Do you know why Bush hasn’t tried those prisoners in Gitmo? He doesn’t have enough evidence that can be admitted in a civilian court. Why do you thing the MCA will allow hearsay evidence elicited under torture, while classifying the methods of exactly how the hearsay evidence was obtained? But if a judge rules against such tactics, he or she is ruling against the Will of the President!

  87. WC Says:

GDumbya is referring to the high taxes that his next three successors will have to impose in order to pay for his Iraq and tax-cut fiascoes.

  89. Jackie Says:

Every time he goes on TV we see just how stupid he really is. PBS asked an intelligent question only to get a dumb stupid answer from an idiot President. If Congress wants to de-fund the war and protect other programs from being robbed for alternate funds, they should repeal the original “authorization to use force,” and pass a new law, being much more specific about what he can and cannot do. Dispense with the generalities and loopholes that allowed him to equate “war on terror” to “invasion and occupation of iraq.” If he chooses to cross the lines demarked by the new authorization, he will have no shelter in “interpretation.”

  91. KatieL Says:

This is way too much money to spend on something that is not supported. It would cost $19 billion, according to the Borgen Project, to bring about an end to world hunger and malnutrition! Now that’s somehting we can agree on- in fact we already did when global leaders agreed to the Millennium Development goals in 2000.

  92. Bluedog49 Says:

He wouldn’t ask the wealthy to sacrifice their tax cuts. Now he won’t even ask the population to sacrifice their “peace of mind” for this war. Incredible.

Bush can veto such a bill, or, more likely, sign it, and include a signing statement as taking it as merely advisory as relates to his Power as Commander in Chief.

  115. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    Sir Greg Nevins sez:

HEY TripMaster Monkey — AND JUST WHAT HIGH CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS HAS GEORGE W, BUSH COMMITTED????

Well, ‘Sir Greg’, since you asked so politely, I’ll oblige you.

Here’s a partial list, detailing just the most egregious of Chimpy’s crimes:

Misleading us about the Threat from Iraq

Bush and his team deliberately misled Congress and the American public about the rationale for invading Iraq. Bush convinced a majority of Americans that Iraq was involved with Al-Qaeda and responsible for the 9/11 attacks. Yet the evidence shows that Iraq was not involved. Bush said in his State of the Union Address that “The British Government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa” to build nuclear weapons. But he had already been told by the CIA that the evidence was forged. Bush claimed to have hard evidence that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. But the UN investigators could not verify any of these claims and searches of Iraq revealed no such weapons. The real reason we invaded Iraq may have more to do with the fact that Iraq has the second largest oil reserves in the world, and sits strategically in the center of the Middle East.

    Illegal Wiretapping of American Citizens

George Bush authorized the NSA to conduct illegal wiretaps on American citizens. Bush claimed that these were justified on the basis of national security. But there is a legal mechanism for conducting emergency wiretaps followed by court approval within 72 hours. Bush ignored that mechanism and exceeded his executive authority. Bush claims he has authority to wiretap anyone he wishes but a federal judge ruled that his actions are unconstitutional.

    Torture of Prisoners

Bush and his team have set up a system of prisons around the world where prisoners can be tortured. They have fought hard to build a legal case for torture but the fact remains that torture is highly illegal. It is also considered an ineffective means of getting reliable information from a prisoner. Bush is guilty of violating of the Federal Torture Act, the UN Torture Convention and the Geneva Convention.

    Violation of International Law

According to our Constitution, International Treaties are part of the “supreme Law of the Land”. They are not something that can be ignored when they are inconvenient. Bush’s violations of the UN Charter and the Nuremberg Charter are, therefore, impeachable offenses.

I hope this addresses your question, Greg.

****Dear Lord Aphrodite, you left home before you could finish your *baby-hash* this morning! I’m so glad you’re here defending Bush’s right to *subvert* the constitution whenever he wants as the *war* president! And I just *love* how you smear all of those over-educated elite democrats, by claiming they don’t have a job! Although I have to say, that does sound completely *psychotic* to call Liberals Elitists and unemployed!

And thanks for posting all of those tax statistics. I particularly liked how you posted *income-tax*, which of course is the only way those *numbers* make sense. When you include property taxes, sales taxes, and wage based taxes the numbers look really bad for those top 2% compared to their wages. But that’s why we never post those other *pesky* numbers! Just posting the *income* taxes is enough. Although I’m not sure where you got *2%*, most tax statistics never break that bracket out. They do the top *1%* and the top *5%*, but not top *2%*. Could you post a resource - or were you just making up those numbers like I usually do!

And please don’t do use my patent trick of posting a broken link, and whining that people can’t use *the-google*!

  117. Zooey Says:

So Nevins, if I wouldn’t know the truth if it hit me in the face, why are you wasting your time on me?

Mmmm, I love cherry kool-aid. Especially with my “anti-pshchotic” meds. I really hope I can avoid coming down with pshchosis.

****Dear Lord Aphrodite, if *only* this were true! These *peaceniks* wouldn’t advocate violence if their own life depended on it - like it does against the *koranimals* that want to keep zion from bringing back the messiah! You keep forgetting sweetheart, that it’s our side that are advocating violence, and creating havoc and dishonor for america’s torturing and murdering troops! We *cons* even fought veterans services, and without the fight of those *traitors* like Kerry, they would have gone underfunded! Dam tax and spend liberals - how dare they want our soldiers to be taken care of!

Comment by Sir Greg Nevins — January 17, 2007 @ 7:02 pm”

****Dear lord aphrodite, but *sweetie*, we *cons* don’t care about democracy! Who cares if Gore won more votes nationally and in Florida! They *stole* the election by letting those *freed-slaves* vote that should never have been allowed to! They didn’t come to this country through proper immigration, and their votes don’t count!

Screw democracy, and screw public elections - we have a *king* george!

  121. Zooey Says:

Well, I ackomplished one thing, Nevins. I helped you figure out how to spell PSYCHOSIS.

Tell me Nevins, what’s your prognosis for my illness?

  122. o'really Says:

Sir Greg Nevins, why do you tell people to drink their Kool-Aid? Imo, it’s kind of a weak insult. What’s wrong with Kool-Aid, other than it’s a little too sweet?

    Comment by MA wannabe

++++Dear Wannabe - Adroit liars are “good” at their craft because they mix lies with the truth. Gore DID win more of the popular vote nationally - BUT he came up short in Florida - and EVERY re-count said the same thing. But we appreciate your demonstration that the education system in this country is in the toilet…..the NEA members didn’t teach you about the Constitution and the Electoral College? Don’t apply for a student loan to THAT college, you poor dear……

  127. Jericho Says:

1 “one thing we want during this war on terror is for people to feel like their life’s moving on, that they’re able to make a living and send their kids to college and put more money on the table.”

The only people able to put more money on the table are WARPROFITEERERS and CORPORATE EXCECUTIVES, your base, remember?

    2. “”it’s a totally different kind of war, than ones we’re used to”

If it’s a totally different war, how come you’re still fighting it like it’s 1945? Why are you sooo idiot to believe that the army that got its ass wooped by the Vietnamese would be able to win in Iraq? The same army, the same Shock and Awe. Anyone who knows anything about strategy knows that Bush did not intend to win.

  128. nullman Says:

Here it is http://www.gpoaccess.gov/911/index.html if you want to get a clue.

Might really want to check it out because is busts quite a few myths you guys hold on to. Like the one where Bush “Secretly flew out relatives of Osma Bin laden” and various other lies you guy spout on a daily basis.

  130. Shmoe Says:

    Hey CeaMonkey,

Is it a lie that Bush senior’s rationale behind not invading Iraq is now vindicated?

Is it a lie that 3,000 of our servicemen didn’t get and will never again spend the holidays with their families?

These are cold, hard facts and any detail surrounding them that may not be true is 100% irrelevant.

Reality wants you back, maybe you should consider a one-way ticket.

Tired of all the BS surrounding the BS.

  131. CeaMOnkey Says:

Guess I should have been more precise as to which posts my response was aimed at.

I however am grounded in reality as you seem to think otherwise. I just posted a link to the report so people can become informed as to what is actually in the 911 report. And not spout as you put it “BS” and mis inform other people.

If you are against the war and dislike the current administration that is fine. I could care less. But when people claim to have knowledge about something they never even read and base arguments and slants of off this..well thats another story.

I have no idea what category you fall under. I will make no assumptions either way. You should make no assumptions about me either.

  132. big papa Says:
