Chris Matthews not interested in being the ‘big shit.’»

He was “against this bullshit war from the very beginning.” Tonight, Hardball host Chris Matthews argued, “If you want America to be a hegemonic power in the Middle East, you’re out of step with the American people. We’re not going to fight it out with Iran for the next 30 years to see who the big shit — I’m sorry — the big name is on the block.” Watch it:

    What an assh*le!

Played to the Repubs when it was convenient for him to do so - even gushed over Bush’s Mission Accomplished PR stunt!

Now that the winds of change has blown to the left, he’s acting like Tip O’Neil’s guy again?
    Disgusting!

Tip is rolling in his grave right now.

What happened to Mr. “Today We Are All NeoCons” Matthews

  9. Earthling Says:

I don’t care what he said or what side he was on yesterday. I’m happy he’s telling it like it is today.

  10. DeciderLiar Says:

It’s nice to see him return from his ride into republican-wanabe-land. I had written the guy off. Bummer he’s so maliable but at least it’s an indication the cracks in the chennymachine are so evident.

  11. 'sconset Says:

Tweety runs where it is most expedient for him. He is a phony who cares only about his ratings.

I am so sick of him talking about Hillary Clinton that I could scream. He is constantly bringing up her name. Did he try to get a position with the Clinton administration as press secretary and was passed over in favor of someone else? It is weird–he is obsessive about her.

  13. 'sconset Says:

He blows hot and cold. Now that the ship is sinking, he wants to be on the side that has been right all along. His show is so tiresome and predictable. All he talks about is Hillary Clinton–he is forever injecting her name into discussions. I’m not going to put up with that for the next 22 months.

Did he try and get the job as press secretary to the Clinton administration and get passed over? He acts like the jilted boyfriend.

Tweety, you have no class–just a very big mouth.

  14. 'sconset Says:

Sorry about the duplicate post. My bad!!

  16. Marie Says:

Sorry, to some extent I may be pleased to see Matthews wander from the Republiscum position he has ascribed to, but in the whole scheme of things, he is simply a TV man interested in ratings. He is a leaf in the wind blowing to the favored direction of the day.

Just tonight, I wrote him to say that he neglected to challenge a Republiscum who asserted that the word “surge” in regard to the troops was a Democratic smear of the true word, “reinforcement.”
From the White House, we all heard “surge” dozens of times; the Dems said it was an escalation. This new word “reinforcement” has been dreamed up by Duncan Hunter and Matthews just let it go.
This is a small point, but Tweety does it all the time.

  17. paul Says:

If Chris Matthews is supposed to be a serious journalist (unbiased) does it make sense that he states his opposition to the war? It sounds like a convenient case of monday morning quarterbacking to me. He probably now recalls that he was against the polyester and platform shoes he wore in the seventies when he worked for Tip O’Neal.

  18. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    paul sez:

If Chris Matthews is supposed to be a serious journalist (unbiased) does it make sense that he states his opposition to the war?

It’s funny, isn’t it, that when Chris expresses his opposition to the war, gets lambasted for not being ‘objective’, while Gretchen Carlson can call a United States Senator a ‘hostile enemy’ of the United States, but she can get away with it because she’s just a ‘commentator’?

    Double standard, anyone?

It sounds like a convenient case of monday morning quarterbacking to me.

To be entirely fair, the vast majority of us were voicing our objections during the coin toss, before the ‘football game’ even began, thanks.

He probably now recalls that he was against the polyester and platform shoes he wore in the seventies when he worked for Tip O’Neal.

paul, please leave the wit to the professionals. Kthx.

    paul,
that’s what really gets my goat about this guy!

I grew up in Cambridge, MA.
Tip lived on Russell St, two streets away from me.
His funeral was @ St. John’s - the very church I was baptized in. My daughter baptized in. My Nana’s funeral. My parents were married in!!!

    There was loyalty, then. Trust.

    He broke it.
I have zero respect for the man.
Sorry for the rant. I have personal ties that color me on this one. Grrrr.

  34. midwestblue Says:

I think Matthews has been against the war for quite a while now. I’m glad he’s angry about it–we need all the help we can get in this fight against Bush’s unnecessary war (even from a person like Chris Matthews, who can drive you crazy).
Heaven’s—I thought we were the more temperate side of the conservative/liberal divide—that we welcomed those who see the error of their ways. You know, everyone has to seek commonality in order to overwhelm this horrible administration, and we have to do it soon. The more people who agree with us, the better the chance for impeachment. More and more people will become disillusioned, and the U.S. citizens will PUT impeachment on the table, whether this congress likes it or not!

How can you understand this guy, anyway. He talks about a mile a minute. He’s at the extreme polar opposite of Dumbo who talks about an inch a minute.
BTW, give Dumbo an inch and he’ll take a mile.
Chris Matthews, as Press Secretary, would very interesting indeed.

War, war, war, war, war, war. I’m sick of this war. This is absolutely, positively the dumbest, strangest war America has fought.

Most likely you were one of the guys throwing disco records at that baseball game 25 years ago. Relax! Relax! Play a Yanni album and calm down now.

Barry Gibb did buy Johnny Cash’s house outside of Nashville. That takes nerve for a disco artist to go country.

Have a nice day, guy. Bring a little love and joy into this world. I try to.

  40. JerryTheAngel Says:

Hardball continues to bring up the bottom of the nightly cable ratings and has so for years. On a good night he manages to draw 400,000 viewers, but normally he’s between 250 and 300,000. I don’t know how this guy stays on the air?

Phil Donahue drew more viewers then Tweety does but he got the axe. hmmmm. On the night of the Presidents treasonous and crminal speech announcing an ESCALATION, MSNBC teamed Matthews up with Keith Olbermann, so that Matthews could hang onto Keith’s coattails.

Matthews narcissistically named themselves “Huntley and Brinkley”. LOL. He’s nothing but a rude and condescending talk show host. He waves his finger in the air to gauge where popular opinion is at, so that he can decide what position to take.

I am sick and tired of Matthews allowing neocon shrills like Vin Weber to get away with labeling those who want to get out of that hellhole (that armpit of ungrateful and murdering Iraqi’s)as liberal cut and runners. SECOND VERSE SAME AS THE FIRST.

I hate to break this to you Vin, but that BS was rejected this past November. Matthews needs to slap these warmongering killers down with a comeback like this:

“Withdrawing from a Civil War is not CUTTING AND RUNNING you Bald Headed moron, it’s called common sense and morality.

It’s serious enough to keep her out of the courtroom during the Libby trial. And if you know Jane, you’d know there’s no other place on earth that she’d rather be than in that courtroom sitting next to Arianna.

This comes on the heels of FDL experiencing a financial crunch and Cristie Smith has taken it upon herself to appeal for donations both through Paypal and directly to FDL’s snailmail address so Jane doesn’t have to worry about the blog’s future.

So stop by my place and get the links and the address if you’re disposed to send some cash or even encouragemnt and support to Jane in this trying time.

Now that Chris will be on the witness stand in the Libby Case he acts like he was against the GOP all along. I hope the NBC Executives are listening to the lies Chris is telling. Fitz will bust him in court and his job will be up for grabs. Bad mouthing Rummy wont do it this time. Chris is to deep in the corruption of his friends the GOP to back out now. Now he sounds more like Tony Snow the born again liar.

I think this is indicative of what has happened to the media over the last 20 years or so. He let his true feelings slip out in a moment of frustration and anger. It goes to prove that these guys aren’t neo-cons in the media, but instead they are scared shitless over pissing off the administration. It’s disgusting. He would never have let a bombshell like that slip if he didn’t have some pretty strong feelings about the war being bad. Too bad he let it slip 5 years too late.

Although I am thrilled to see the veneer coming off of the MSM, it doesn’t improve my opinion of any of them one bit. They had their chance when it could have made a real difference. It was their responsibility to give us the real information and truth in 2002-2003, they didn’t-Tweety included. They blew it, and although I’m grateful that they are beginning to get on the right side of this conflict, they are all still a day late and a dollar short. One possible by-product may be, hopefully, them not allowing the same lies and rhetoric to get us into Iran. Maybe they will finally do their damned jobs.

Give us guns – and troops can go, says Iraqi leader

America’s refusal to give Baghdad’s security forces sufficient guns and equipment has cost a great number of lives, the Iraqi Prime Minister said yesterday.

Nouri al-Maliki said the insurgency had been bloodier and prolonged because Washington had refused to part with equipment. If it released the necessary arms, US forces could “dramatically” cut their numbers in three to six months, he told The Times.

NO WONDER NO WONDER NO WONDER - Give them weapons and go home

  91. Francesco Says:

One of the few men in the current and former US Congress having consistently been against the war and always opposing its funding, is running for presidency. If you listen to what he has to say, you know where the 38 cents on every tax dollar US citizens pay COULD go to … and guess what, none would go to the war. Want a fresh approach on Iraq, and not more of the same, as Bush is proposing? Do you love North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania? Or do you love only one or a few of those six? It does not matter: peace is inclusive, as it serves the needs of all, whilst war is exclusive, because it serves the needs of a few.

  92. stevebaughn Says:

US politics sure is weird, seen from this side of the Atlantic. All these candidates seem to have identical policies, except for slight disagreements about how many Iraquis to kill before they get bored and move on to screwing

I saw some of Hardball (beechball) last night.

Mr. Matthews had republican Duncan Hunter and democrat Tim Waltz? on.
It was painfully clear, by that interview, that Mr. Matthews is not interested in being unbiased.
Rep. Hunter had a ton of air time compared to rep. Tim Waltz. Hunter used the age old political ploy of talking and talking to use up air time.
Tim Waltz was passionate and effective. He was taking Hunter to the woodshed. Hunter was given much more air time to make his points. Waltz was not allowed to respond a second time to Hunter. Matthews, conveniently, went to a comercial break.

It is disturbing that Think Progress is backing up Chris Matthews in this way. TP did it once last week as well. Makes me wonder.

For the most part, Mr. Matthews talks out of both sides of his mouth. Tries to come across as moderate. He seems to take every position at one time or another, just to cover his ass. That’s what politicians try to do.

I hate to say this, but at least Joe Scarborough is consistent. I know he is a conservative republican. He does not try to hide it. He is also, solidly, against the troop escalation. While I don’t agree with almost anything he says, I do feel like I know where he stands.

People like Chris Matthews are more dangerous. They try not to be pinned down to one position on controversial issues. Sorry, but there is word for people who do not stand up for anything.
For people who do not stand up for their country.

Right on brother. And after the show he went to Tom Delay’s house and gave him a blowjob.

    Don’t bet on it Squirrel…

…those corporate owned scum have totally ignored what surely 65% of the country knows needs to be done to rectify the situation this criminal Bushite junta has put us in…

    …IMPEACHMENT…

…the msm refuses to even bring up the subject…

…no polling data, not a whisper or hint except to say…

…”Impeachment is impossible because the republicans won’t break ranks.”

…If this mofo starts to burn they will…

    #95 shocker

Tim Walz. I watched almost the entire Hardball but missed the last ten minutes. I suppose that’s when they had Tim on. He’s a good guy. They’ve already given him a chance to give the Dems’ response to Bush’s weekly radio address. He’s going to do really well in Congress.

  99. Tomas Says:

Matthews is not the big shit on the block, he’s the dogshit on the walk.

He was always a gung-ho supporter of the invasion.

Doesn’t anyone recall his homo-erotic gushing and surging over Bush’s codpiece and “manly bearing” in that flightsuit? It was positively pornographic, and utterly disgusting.

Is this what US society has come to: you can just change your blather at any moment and abjure all responsibility for everything that you’ve said and done previously?

That country is doomed. It is a decadent watermelon republic.

The rest of us out here in the world hate you, and for good reason.

  100. Randy Nason Says:

Chris Matthews is a political whore and bends over for whoever holds the edge of the power-dildo. I remember in the not-so-distant past that Chris was so polite and so easy on his right-wing-nut friends who stopped by to visit his “fair and unbiased” show. Now, he acts so different. I don’t forget how it was just a short year ago, though.

  101. JohhnyO Says:

Couldn’t agree with Randy more. When his old buddy (Matthews refers to him as such) Tom DeLay comes on the show, you could almost see Mathews going to his knees. Disgusting! When Howard Dean comes on the show, C.M. hardly lets him get a word in between insults to the Democratic party. Panders to whoever is in power. - Thats OK. Maybe we’ll see some well deseved bowing to the Dems now.

  102. colleen Says:

No kidding, I’m not the biggest fan of Chris but apparently he has an outlet for the testosterone pulsing through his veins- unlike Cheney who has to be driven to the prey so he can lift up his gun and kill it. Pitiful, wish they would start a GOP arm wrestling event- maybe we could stop destroying the world? hmmm..
