Methodist ministers protest Bush library.

“A group of Methodist ministers from across the nation launched an online petition drive” today “urging Southern Methodist University to stop trying to land George W. Bush’s presidential library.” The petition, found here, says that “as United Methodists, we believe that the linking of his presidency with a university bearing the Methodist name is utterly inappropriate.”

OH MY GOD!!! How funny is THIS?!!

“I understand there are some who have reservations, and my admonition to them, or my advice to them is, just understand that a library and institute would enhance education. It would be a place for interesting discussion,” he said. “It would be a place for people to be able to express their views and write and think. And these universities, I think, understand that and are excited about the prospects, and so am I.” – Pres. Bush, Belo Broadcasting Interview

A work for a Methodist affilated hospital and as an atheist, I have much respect for the Methodist denomination right now.

Why a library? It’s not like he can read…

#4. Is Bush just now realizing that Universities are a “place for people to be able to express their views and write and think.

  9. Friar Mynd says:

It says something that SMU is Laura’s alma mater, where did Dubious go to school again?…….. I forget…………..
Or maybe when they got married, George promised her she could be the librarian of her very own library……….
Is this the first time a pResident has tried to “piggy back” onto an existing institution, without building his own stand alone “presidential library?

  10. gogreen says:

I bet George Bush is the first president in history to have a major religious denomination refuse to have their name associated with his. George continues to make history as the worst and most despised president ever.

I think the Duhbya presudential librury should be built on the grounds of one of the wingnut mega-church complexes. They are the only people who will ever acknowledge him as anything other than an absolute failure, because they think he will bring about ARMAGEDDON.

Unfortunately, my mom, who now wishes she hadn’t, to which I tell her”Boo-friggin-hoo, AND don’t blame subsequent Congresses or Presidents for the rough ride we will endure for years to come because of the completely failed presidency of der Limp Shrub.”

Honestly, this is how I was taught our Government was designed to function: without Monarchial/Dictatorial rule, or without one Political idea dominating another, but rather, slow, pendulum like swings around a “common” middle ground. It’s supposed to be stable, but that was before Big Business economy dominated politics/ the World.

  14. TonyC says:

What are they complaining about? It’s only going to have two books in it: “The Holy Bible” and “My Pet Goat”.

Anything else will be declared “Classified” and locked away from the light of day for seventy-five years.

  15. TonyC says:

“It would be a place for people to be able to express their views and write and think.”

Wait! Did he say “think” or “drink?”

  16. gogreen says:

The GWB liberry will be the only one that will have people security guards at the doors censoring nay material that might come into the library. Since this is the classified adminstration, and becasue all of his public appearances are an embarassment, the only thing in it will be pictures of GW on vacation.

  17. hellinabucket says:

    I remember IRI.

DieNowForPeace, I agree. Far too long the far right and far left have been dictating what the major issues should be (abortion, gay marriage) and the party currently in power (WH only thankfully) used it better than ever before. Throw in a healthy dose of fear and cover it all with a blanket of patriotism and you have the GOP platform for the last 6 years.

  18. Kid Clu says:

Friar Mynd : To answer your question, there are other presidential libraries that have university affiliations. The Carter Center Library is associated with Emory University. Emory is a private college that was founded by Methodists. So no one can say that the Methodists don’t know the merits of presidential libraries. It’s pretty clear they just don’t want a preznut library.

  19. Son-of-Bruce says:

I don’t think SMU could tarnish their image any worse than the black eye they got from the NCAA when they handed the first ever “Death Penalty” to their football program. It was the first and only sentence handed out to a school.

****Dear misguided satanist, you give the *libruls* too much credit! We’ve never let the *far-left* dictate anything in this country. But world-wide standards, none of our social, domestic or economic policies even represent a *moderate-left* stance! Far left indeed – how naive of you! You really need to get out of *hell* more often!

  21. Willy says:

I would hope that any “true” religion would realize that linking themselves to someone as immoral as George Bush would be hypocrisy and a huge mistake. But, unfortunately a lot of religions and supposedly religious people are much more interested in image than morality. Good for these few “enlightened” ministers!

  22. John Gilpins says:

I just read that the projected amount of money being raised for this presidential library is $200,000,000. That’s a lot of money.

I’ve been to just a few of the presidential libraries: Carter, LBJ, and Truman libraries specifically. Except for the Carter Center, most of these presidential libraries seem to be window dressing packaged as a library. There seems to be more exhibits than books. Yeah, you do read a little about the life of the president, and viewing a biographical movie in a theatre. However, it’s not much of a learning experience.

Bush should consider other options. Building a medical library at say Baylor University, specializing in amputee injuries, would be more cost effective. Or, building a $200,000,000 hospital, itself, at Baylor would make much more sense.

The George W. Bush Amputee Hospital at Baylor University would be of benefit to our American soldiers with missing legs and arms.

Books? Are you kidding. George Bush is not an avid reader, so a presidential library is not a good fit for this president. An amputee hospital would be a good fit.

    John

  23. Jay Randal says:

Bush’s so-called library is slated to cost over 500 million dollars, which would make it the most expensive presidential library in US history. Clinton’s library cost about 150 million to build, so Dubya wants to outdo Bill. Bush’s library is going to be his tomb for his body someday, so he wants something lavish like Napoleon’s burial site in Paris, France. Only selected Bush lovers will ever be allowed inside to view his marble burial chamber.

  24. i_eat_boogers says:

It would be cheaper and more fitting to simply re-name every mental ward in every hospital “The Bush”.

  25. hellinabucket says:

John Gilpins, I’ll even donate to the amputee hospital. That does sound like the most logical way to remember this chooooch.

#24. Your idea is cheaper and fitting as well.

  26. DeanOR says:

This is rich. Bush is supposedly a Methodist, but he has refused all along to meet with Methodist church leaders, knowing what they would say to him. It will be hard for the U to turn down the millions, much to the disgust of all the Methodists that I know.

  27. Wayne says:

I think all unversities should reject Bush’s presidential library. No institute of higher learning should support this moronic fool.

Delegate his library to the outhouse behind the ranch in Crawford. At least the pages of the books he would put in his library can be put to good use then.

  28. Xenon says:

Linking Bush to any name is highly inappropriate…unless, of course, that name is Cheney.

  30. Bluestocking says:

Speaking as someone who was raised in the United Methodist Church, I wholeheartedly applaud these ministers for coming forward with this petition. Believing as I do in the separation of church and state, I don’t think that it’s appropriate for any Presidential library to be closely affiliated with a religious-based institution such as Southern Methodist University — but especially not one associated with George W. Bush, whose behavior as President (at least in my estimation) has seldom appeared to be closely in concert with genuine Christian values.

  31. Mikey says:

I feel bad for the guy. I think I’ll name the trash bin outside my office in his honor. Behold….the Bush Presidential Dumpster. And look, it’s already fulfulling his legacy. (Hint, replace Turkey with anywhere USA)

  32. John Gilpins says:

    Jay,

I thought $200,000,000 was expensive. Five-hundred-million? Wow! Wow! Wow!

I think it’s safe to say Dubya will OUTDO Bill all right:

    1. Number of lies told.

    2. Number of soldiers killed due to his incompetence and faulty judgment.

    3. Number of administration scandals.

    4. Number of dollars missing from our national piggy bank.

    5. Number of friends reaping huge financial rewards.

    6. Number of family members reaping huge financial rewards.

    7. Number of icebergs melting in various oceans around the world

    8. Number of lethal UV rays getting through the vanishing ozone layer.

    9. Number of endangered species taking their last breath.

    10. Number of his own party loyalists abandoning him in droves.

Everything George does is a big number.

GEORGE SURE DID A BIG NUMBER ON US.

    John

Bucket, amputees should be in our thoughts.

  37. Mikey says:

Five Hundred Million? Dollars? That’s obcene. If the guy wants to redeem himself and be remembered positively, he should take that money and rebuild about 10,000 homes (@$50K each) in New Orleans.

  38. Bobby says:

Linking the name of the university with the lying bastard flies in the face of christianity. The ministers can forgive the criminal but they cannot condone him.

If Dumbya wants to link up his library with a university, how about the Rev. Foulsmell’s Liberty University? I doubt if there would be any opposition or protest there.

  43. John Gilpins says:

    RUCerious,

“Just documents, left in a dusty field, surrounded by barbed wire.”

Yes, that’s a good place for the documents.

How many fools are going to fork over money, at a Bush Presidential Library, to see:

    1. Documents listing the weapons of mass destruction location sites in Iraq.

    2. Halliburton documents

    3. Hurricane Katrina documents

    4. Rumsfeld’s wonderful, clear, concise, strategic military documents.

    5. Environmental documents.

    6. Florida 2000 election documents.

    7. Ohio 2004 election documents.

    8. The Plame affair/scandal documents

Bush should burn these documents up, instead of displaying them.

    John

  44. doug says:

This is really interesting! Will Bush be able to find any institution to back him for a measlie $500,000,000?

    I wouldn’t think so.

Mental Hospitals as “the Bush”? I like it but it is being insensitive to the residence or “the Bush.” I would prefer to call the penitentiaries “the Bush.” I hope I haven’t confused the issue. How about what ever catches on in your nick-of-the-woods?

  45. doug says:

  47. mary d. fields says:

it is hard to believe that we have american citizens so filled with hate that they can make such comments as posted above about any american president-i have read these comments and find it hard to believe that these are posted on a supposedly “good” christian denomination site-surely our president will have second thoughts about choosing such a “site” for his library—progressive, in the true sense of the word, this place ain’t.
