Reid to challenge Bush on Iran.

“When the Democratic leaders of Congress offer their State of the Union prebuttals at the National Press Club later today, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., plans to challenge for the first time President Bush’s authority to pursue an incursion into Iran without prior congressional approval. ‘This morning, I’d like to be clear,’ Reid plans to say according excerpts of his speech obtained by ABC News, ‘The President does not have the authority to launch military action in Iran without first seeking congressional authorization.’”

    Give ‘em hell, Harry!

    Someone stop that man.

It’s line in the sand time.

    Wonder who’s gonna blink first.

  4. TripMaster Monkey says:

Of course, all this will be rendered moot when either the Israelis or our carrier group in the Persian Gulf gets attacked (ostensibly by the Iranians).

Then, Chimpy will beat his breast about ‘protecting our interests’ and proceed to do whatever the hell he wants, as usual.

  5. Zooey says:

    Trip,

You may very well be right, but I pray you are wrong.

  6. [B!] says:

We should be more concerned about Bush, not another third world country.

  7. trueblue says:

    TMM,

Wasn’t there an article out there suggesting Israel was thinking/planning on bombing the nuclear facilities in Iran?

    i don’t trust abc…

  9. tarazan says:

Yes Senator Reid, but you cannot influence war path and NeoCons appetite for it by simply passing ‘non binding’ resolutions..These toothless resolutions means nothing to the NeoCons cabal…unless you have a real resolution with teeth, then it is only a publicity stunt. I hope Mr. Reid backs his words with action…,otherwise it will anothers blogger posting.

  10. TripMaster Monkey says:

    trueblue:

That’s right, although Israel has subsequently denied the allegations.

Probably the reason why Iran just bought some anti-missile defense from the russians to protect those facilities.

However, Olmert is having a lot of internal problems. And I dont post links cuz Im lazy.

    Mr Harry Reid.

Heh. He has been such a we noodle. I’m not holding my breath on this one. I need air.

  13. ForTruth says:

    That would be “wet” noodle.

  14. Tenebrae says:

Since when has the legality of a course of action affected Bush’s decisions???

  15. RealityCheck says:

Everyone is expecting some pretext/justification to attack Iran.

Saying “I’ll impeach you if” will backfire because there will always be an excuse for crossing the tripwire and then Democrats are 1) blamed for unfairly impeaching, based on the circumstances of that one line-in-the-sand event, or 2) not following through with impeachment.

No, much better to not set any conditions. There are plenty already. The guy’s clearly out of control. Call and write your Congressmen. He needs to be impeached today. Every day he’s in power there’s just a deeper hole for future generations to dig out of.

  16. trueblue says:

    TMM,
    Thanks for the link.

    Juan,
lazy is not a word I would ever use to describe you.

Truer words were never spoken. What exactly does Chimpy have to do in order for the Dems to finally put impeachment ‘back on the table’?

Chimpy and his cohorts are traitors and war criminals. Every day the Congress fails to impeach is another day that they will be counted as collaborators and co-conspirators in this administration’s crimes.

Reid better stand strong againt the “intelligence” that will appear from the computers of the Iranian diplomats that were detained last week. Of course it will be selective and nebulous and they won’t release anything they deem “sensitive material” which usually is opposite to what they are trying to push for. Does anyone know what happened to those Iranians that were detained? Were they ever released?

  20. trueblue says:

    Zooey,

    wouldn’t you like to know…..

    ha

  22. Dogjudge says:

Although I feel we have a lunatic at the controls of the ship, Harry is wrong. All the President has to do is to come up with some sort of pretext that the US has been attacked, and he can go into Iran.

Let’s see how good has Congress been about verifying a valid threat to the United States? Although the Republicans were in control, I still don’t see anything where Bush has been held accountable for the lies that led us into Iraq.

Iran shot down one of our drones the other day supposedly. Justification to go to war? Bush sends a bunch of planes over their country and they shoot one down. Justification to go to war?

And then we get Pelosi saying impeachment is off the table and that cutting funding for the war in Iraq is off the table. It appears to me that she’s making Bush’s job easier day by day.

Yes. Actually, I think we’d all like to know.

    Heh.

  24. VerbalKint says:

Challenging Bush on Iran will only egg him on. He is determined to show us all who is really boss around here. The only way to stop an attack on Iran is to impeach Bush now, and to do it quickly, preferably in one day.

  25. RealityCheck says:

“Does anyone know what happened to those Iranians that were detained?”

They are undergoing necessary “coercive” debriefing which is absolutely not torture, because we define torture as “coercive techniques,” which anyone can see is different from “torture.”

    (see, “Coercion, not torture”) http://www.dailykos.com/

Besides, your security at these extraordinary and dangerous times in which we are at war with terror, require that the Commander in Chief use all the powers vested in him by the Constitution.

He is responsible for the safety of this country, not subjugation to some other country’s definition of what is and what is not a war crime.

Besides, you don’t have the power to stop him and even if you did, you wouldn’t use it. We know this, because it’s more important to you to position yourself for ‘08 than to uphold the Constitution and your oath of office.

  26. ForTruth says:

    Yeah True, what up?

  27. big papa says:

    Question is…

    …when Bushiva IGNORES Reid’s admonition…

…what will the divided Congress do about it?

…the Repulsivescum are TRAITORS who will never abandon their gods Bushiva and L’il Dick…

…are we willing to confront them by whatever means necessary to take back our representative democracy?

  28. John says:

Old Harry is riding a wave of support that undermines our ability to keep Iran from support nuclear technology to terroist…good for you Harry!

  29. us says:

who the hell care about the Israelis? Do you know how much they cost the U.S in aids. damn them

  30. John Semple says:

But the U.S. already has undercover Special Forces operatives on the ground in Iran! I remember this on the news a few months ago. They’re not in combat, they’re scouting out locations (like suspected nuclear sites) and the coordinates for future missle strikes. Tell me *that*’s legal!

  31. frances says:

all of you are stupid ,like you think you acually have the answers!!!!!!

  32. John says:

Yeah, I believe everything I hear on the news too.

  33. David McFarland says:

Read the book The Bush Agenda by Anotnia Juhasz and see the real reason why we are over there to begin with. Our administration is one founded by three oil people who are tied into past political appointee’s from former administrations that currently either run or have connections with the multicorporational structures that literally take over countries vast resourses under the guise of free trade ageements. Bush could not get this done in Iran, so the next best shot was Iraq. It’s good to see somebody like Harry standing up and saying we are not going to take it anymore. The entire administration needs to be impeached.

  34. michael says:

    Hey Tripmaster, where you been?

“proceed to do whatever the hell he wants”

    I sure hope so!

  35. Amacd says:

big papa, you accurately ask, “Question is…

    …when Bushiva IGNORES Reid’s admonition…

…what will the divided Congress do about it?

…are we willing to confront them by whatever means necessary to take back our representative democracy?”

YES, we must be willing to expunge the Empire that has taken over our country —- and take back our democracy. Exactly, big papa!

  36. RUCerious says:

Well, frances, stupid is as stupid does, your chymp in chief is pretty much the poster boy for stupid.
