Brownback Opposes Escalation, But Attacks Senate Resolution Against Bush Plan

Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS) has come out against President Bush’s escalation plan. He recently said:

I do not believe that sending more troops to Iraq is the answer. … Iraq requires a political rather than a military solution.

On ABC’s This Week, Brownback explained that after talking to Iraqi and U.S. military leaders on a recent trip to Iraq, he was convinced that the escalation plan could not succeed. But when pressed by host George Stephanopoulos on whether he would register his opposition by supporting a bipartisan Senate resolution opposing Bush’s plan, Brownback said he would not. Instead, he attacked the resolution, arguing, “That just says, OK, we’re against this.” Watch it:

Full transcript:

STEPHANOPOULOS: But last week, you spoke out against the idea. What changed?

BROWNBACK: I went to Baghdad. I was there last week. I was there the week before last, rather. I met with the military officials. I met with the Sunni and Shiite leaders, none of which really supported the idea.

And then, the capstone on all of it was, I went to the Kurdish region. I went to Erbil and I met with Mr. Barzani, the head of the Kurdish region. And I asked him, will you send Kurdish troops, your Kurdish troops, into Baghdad to quell the violence? And he said, why should I get in the middle of a Sunni-Shiite fight?

STEPHANOPOULOS: I thought they were doing that, though.

BROWNBACK: He’s not sending the core of his troops. And I asked him, would you send — if you were me, would you vote for more troops? And he said, I don’t see why you would do that at this point in time?

[...]

STEPHANOPOULOS: Well, Senator Hagel has joined the Democrats in introducing a resolution to oppose the president’s sending of more troops. Will you vote for that?

BROWNBACK: No. That doesn’t give us a route forward. That just says, OK, we’re against this. What I think we really have got to do today is sit down with Democrat leaders and say, what will you support?

Not exactly what I’d call an attack Faiz… I don’t think we can demonize Republicans just because they are conservative. It’s what will make us look irrational.

This website has done a helluva job over the last few years in keeping folks informed and remaining out of the fray of Democratic politics. Now that the veil has been lifted and Podesta has come out for Hillary, I truly hope that this site doesn’t become a Hillary campaign vehicle. If it does, I’m outta here as I’m sure many others will be as well.

She can’t win. Period. Gore, Obama and Edwards are all more viable candidates than someone who will be as polarizing as Bush and raise as much money for the GOP as the Dems.

Congress needs to pass a resolution with REAL TEETH in it. Cut off funding for the war. It was done in 1973, cutting off funding for ALL combat ops in SE Asia. Do it again.

Passing a nonbinding resolution is saying “tsk, tsk” but allowing it to continue. If Congress does not use its power of the purse, it is enabling Bushitler to continue his march of folly, and is equally guilty of having blood on its hands.

Do something about it. March on Congress next Saturday. http://www.unitedforpeace.org

Sadly, there are many on the Right who will fight against Hillary more than they will fight for the conservative candidate of their choice.

I think she has a lot of great ideas, and is a brilliant woman. My mother always used to comment that Hillary was the one running the country when Bill was in office, because she was smarter and more capable. But unfortunately, you are right. She has too many hurdles to overcome to win.

I think we have three other outstanding candidates who would all do an excellent job. So far, the Republicans have none.

  11. Faiz says:

Unbelievable (#3), Brownback may say things more gently, but his comments on the resolution are indeed an attack on anyone who supports congressional action against escalation. It’s a reprise of the argument that anyone who endorses a resolution against the Bush escalation plan has no plan to offer of their own and isn’t being “serious.” It’s a specious argument — one I see as an attack.

He is simple the other side of the same old coin!

He has even gone and dusted off Bush old railing cry – that of saying he too is a so called “ Compassionate Conservative”!

Does that make his a “Christian Fascist” I would yes!

I have never meet a conservative that was compassionate about anything that really mattered to the people but was compassionate about absolute power, bigotry, cynicism, cronyism, criminal negligence, corruption, fascism, hypocrisy, hate mongering, self loathing, homophobe, intolerance, not a iota of respect civil rights, ideologically rigid, indifferent at best… hostile at worst, nasty and obsessive, to list just a few!

  19. Angry One says:

In its December 18th issue, the New Republic offers a window into the soul of Kansas Republican Senator and 2008 White House hopeful Sam Brownback. Tracing Brownback’s dual conversions from small government Gingrich acolyte to red meat culture warrior and from devout evangelical to Catholic firebrand, TNR ponders his presidential prospects.

But Brownback’s’ new found extremism aside, the most illuminating nugget in Noam Scheiber’s piece may be the themes of victimization and inferiority that underlay the rage and seething of red state crusaders Brownback represents. As Scheiber details, Brownback offers up a 21st century version of the elite blue state bogeyman sneering at his slack-jawed brethren in America’s heartland:

Brownback turns to me and explains his theory of red-state/blue-state relations. People who live in Red America know plenty about Blue America. They often work in large cities, or they travel to them on vacation, or they hear about them through popular culture. But the opposite is almost never true. “If they”–the people in Blue America–”travel at all,” Brownback says, “they go abroad, like to Europe or Tokyo.” I can’t say for sure, but I think he is paying me a compliment.

    For more, see:
    “Brownback on the Red-Blue Divide.”

    Actually the truth is
Kurdish Iraqi soldiers are deserting to avoid the conflict in Baghdad

Kurdish soldiers from northern Iraq, who are mostly Sunnis but not Arabs, are deserting the army to avoid the civil war in Baghdad, a conflict they consider someone else’s problem.

SO THE PLAN IS TO SEND AMERICAN TROOPS ALONE INTO SOUTHERN BAGHDAD – Kurd troops into Sadr City will not work they know being Sunni unable to speak the language and will stir up Civil War and their deserting in drives

Looks like American troops will have to take Sadr out ( and Thats a joke) 2 million militai in Baghdada alone aged 14 to 45 all armed
