Bush’s Millennium program running out of funds.

WSJ: “President Bush’s signature foreign-assistance program is likely to run out of money this year, leaving in the lurch several poor countries that have labored to meet its strict eligibility standards, according to aid officials. Mr. Bush introduced the Millennium Challenge program in 2002 as a new approach to fix the perceived failures of overseas-development assistance.”

    Reported.

Lets see how long it takes.

  2. Barfly says:

    Wow. Quick-draw Judd?

  3. veritas says:

What a surprise? Bush’s money running out? When was the last time he balanced his personal checkbook? Never mind balancing the budget of this country….is he joking? Fiscal responsibility and accountability have never been this guy’s forte and it’s showing miserably by bankrupting this country of ours.

  4. RUCerious says:

Hey, Judd whacked my “click much” entry as well.
Hmm, I guess it wouldn’t make sense without the click click, click, etc. anyhoo…

  5. Barfly says:

A’fore people think I’m a tetched the haid, the two above posts chronicle me reporting a troll, and finding the crap gone before I even got back. Kudos, TP.

  6. paul says:

It would be a shame not to live up to our obligation to these countries, just like it would be a shame not to live up to our obligations to secure Iraq.

  7. Barfly says:

Boy, that Bush legacy is misfiring on all cylinders, and shooting sparks out of the tailpipe. It now looks like a clown car at a destuction derby; hit it in the right spot, and it all falls apart.

  8. Dumb_Fox says:

    Another Bush project gone bankrupt?

    Say it ain’t so.

  9. RUCerious says:

I’d agree with Paul except the vision of “securing” Iraq looks so damn much like an open ended occupation after an illegal invasion and usurping of the soveriegn nation of Iraq.

  10. RUCerious says:

Keep up the good work Judd, you’re 2 for 2…

  11. paul says:

RUCerious. I believe the effort in Iraq can succeed and will benefit us more in the long run, than if we had taken no action. But your #9 was a very good post. Nice.

  12. hacker bob says:

Paul, all I can say is “woulda’, coulda’, shoulda’”

While ther is not “right way” to do it, I think we found the worst of the “wrong” ways.

    Judd, You da’ MAN!

  13. paul says:

hacker bob. I personally like the moniker hacker bob over robert. (I would also like to find something more original that ‘paul’ for mine – but please no suggestions, my kids are around).

Although I have bought off on the strategy in the Middle East as a tough choice to a difficult situation that most don’t agree with, it is easy to concede that tactically the effort has not been managed well and the difficulty (after reaching Baghdad) was underestimated.

  14. RUCerious says:

#11 Paul, I too think there will be serious consequences when we pull out. But I have confidence that this 3,000 year old culture will figure it out.
Probably a Shiite strongman, with some truce to let the Sunni emigrate out to Syria, Egypt, Saudi…
I can’t think of a single historical incident where democracy was imposed by invasion and occupation (and don’t give me Japan and Germany, we didn’t unilaterally invade either…)

  15. RUCerious says:

#11 – PS, how bout getting back on topic, or going to a thread about Iraq??

  16. paul says:

RUCerious. I agree with your assessment of the difficulty (or possibility) of imposing democracy, I’m just not as confident in the outcome of the region, if we leave too soon. Gotta go. Life responsibilities are starting to get in the way of my time on the internet. This isn’t the Iraq thread? ;)

  17. KatieL says:

It’s possible to end global hunger by 2025. That is part of what these goals were going to accomplish. We have spent over $300 billion on the war in Iraq so far and we don’t have enough to support the Millennium Goals! That’s crazy! The Borgen Project says a mere $19 billion annually is all that is needed. Time to start lobbying your representatives.

  18. Zooey says:

GWB, I like this bait & switch stuff, heh heh…
