Gay marriage ban dropped.

By Nico Pitney on Jan 22nd, 2007 at 2:15 pm

Gay marriage ban dropped.

Sen. Wayne Allard (R-CO) and Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R-CO), the two leading advocates of amending the US Constitution to ban same-sex marriage, “say they have no plans to make a third try to advance the proposal.” “If we thought there was a decent chance to bring it to the floor for debate, I would, but with the new Congress, I’m not sure we will ever have that opportunity,” Allard says.

Remember, in the midterms 9 states voted on gay marriage amendments. 8 said no. I guess that tells you what “the people” think.

I wonder what the numbers would have been if they allowed a vote on outlawing slavery in 1860. I’m sure we could have avoided a civil war, but that would also mean that slavery would still be legal.

If the so-called “religious” voter wanted to save marriage, just outlaw divorce! Straight marriage is only in danger from multiple divorce’s, not by extending marriage to include non-traditional options.

It never ceases to amaze me how the Republican mindset simply has to hate and discriminate against everybody who does not look like them, act like them or believe in the same things that they believe in.

How does this “country of immigrants”, this much touted “melting pot”, end up with a political party like that?

    Simply boggles the mind.

Just because 8 states chose to regress themselves does not mean the majority of “the people” in the US think that way. There are 42 others by last count.

  22. DallasNE says:

The FBI has become too political. Everything seems to be filter through a political prism.

The FBI has now been criticized for their inaction in the Foley scandal, and rightly so.

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16756038/

Compare and contrast that with how they zealously pursued every rumor about the Clinton’s while they were in office. The FBI has basically become the law enforcement arm of the Republican Party.

Is it time for the FBI Director to be selected by a bi-partisan Commission set up for the purpose of vetting potential candidates that then are submitted to the President where he/she can select from the list but only from the list. Since the days of Watergate we have witnessed one Director after another that lacked independent judgement and ended up being an embarrassement to the department. (L. Patrick Grey even destroyed evidence by dumping it in the Potomic River.) Even the mishandling of 9/11 related data from the field offices in both Minneapolis and Phoenix are
entwined in the political takeover of the FBI directorship.

After 35 years of failure Isn’t it about time to fix the problem?

  23. dlet says:

    hacker bob,
It seems that 13 states have constitutional bans on same sex marriage. That’s more than I thought. A very good summary state by state is found here.

  24. veritas says:

Does anyone remember when it was taboo in this country to discuss or judge one for their race, creed, and sexual preference?? Was it that far in the dark ages or are these numbnuts in Congress just lost in the that era themselves? This type of “group think” regresses mankind and certainly this country back to the Dark Ages!

Whatever happened to the Preamble to the Constitution which read” and all men are created equal…..???????? This doesn’t mean that some are created equal and others are not. The longer the GOP spews their bigoted drivel, the more regressed we as a country become….it’s time to oust all rethugs from holding public office if they can’t seem to understand that the constitution and the preamble are still the moral high road for the majority of people in this country.

Rethugs are passe and soon will become totally irrelevant.

  25. Spudge_Boy says:

Remember, in the midterms 9 states voted on gay marriage amendments. 8 said no. I guess that tells you what “the people” think.

If I went to the RNC and had them vote on banning gay marriage, it would pass. If you go to a red state and ask them to ban gay marriage, it will pass. If you put that same vote on a national scale, where there are 72% liberals and moderates, it will not pass. Using a bunch of bigoted red states as an example is not good debating.

I am glad to see that you can let people live their lives and be happy with whatever choice they make.

And, while we’re at it #23 and discussing how the FBI checked every nook & cranny of the Clinton era, I wonder why they’re not doing the same to see where Dubya’s hanging his stones these days??? Could it be that he’s so undesirable that no human other than pathetic Laura would want him? Of course, they’re two peas in a pod with her “expunged” vehicular homicide and druggie days so it makes sense that two sociopaths would fine comfort in each other….even Barney – poor dog! He doesn’t have a choice or I’m sure he’d leave home, too.

  30. veritas says:

#28 – The “righteous right” will never wake up because it would mean that they’d see their own level of hypocrisy in it all…..just like Dubya….it’s a form of madness….in this case, religious zealotism or fanaticism.

As I have said here in the past, it should be a NATIONAL issue as it carries NATIONAL implications. Things like Insurance, Contracts, health care, etc. In short, to ensure couples have EQUAL rights nation wide it needs to be a national issue, not a states issue.

Using a bunch of bigoted red states as an example is not good debating.

Using a fact, even one you audience does not like is the essence of debating.

What people do in the privacy of their own homes is not the business of the state or federal government. I think that the Congress should focus on other important issues instead of same-sex marriage.

Hypicritical. All men (and women, for that matter) are created equal, and that, I’m sorry to say, is something many of my Republican friends, do not understand.

No, I don’t believe in divorce because the bible forbids the act except for when the spouse physically views their mate committing adultery. Even then, you still can’t re-marry until your spouse has died. If you have divorced your spouse and have remarried, knowing that your spouse is still alive, you are an adulterer, and until you drop that individual, you will not inherit the kindom of god. For those that have been married two or more times, drop your mate or prepare for hell.

JYD, I’m not judgemental, I’m telling you what the bible says. The bible also says, to the true followers, to be witnesses. That’s what I am. Also, you can’t be a Christian and a Democrat. Democrats (liberals) believe that you can commit every unrighteous deed without suffering the consequences. Jesus had conservative views.

  89. unbelievable says:

unbelievable, let us not be foolish, it’s one of the commandments (Thou shalt not kill).

It’s not foolish. The Bibles say all kinds of contradictory things. There are plenty of verses that support killing.

There are also verses that say that life begins at breath – therefore abortion is not killing. This commandment is not applicable since life begins at breath.

I never saw a preposition/exception used during that passage.

I agree. It says don’t kill. It doesn’t say don’t kill people. Therefore, you have to stop killing animals to eat. After all, like you said, it doesn’t offer any exceptions.

So if you’re in DC causing traffic for people like me because you’re celebrating pro-abortion rights then you are wrong.
    Comment by Daryll — January 22, 2007 @ 4:52 pm

You don’t determine what is right or wrong. It’s subjective. It’s also legal, and constitutional for me to do so. The Bibles are not my authority. I’m far more moral than that.

    Exodus 21:22

Notice how “injury” here refers to the woman, not the aborted fetus. It also illlustrates how abortion is not akin to murder, even by biblical standards.

So they took aspects of other religions, such as Zoroastrianism, and changed a few things. Then they took Yawei, the brother of the chief god of the time, and made him their god. The main idea in all of the bibles is “Don’t be a dick” Which Daryll didn’t seem to figure out, because here he is, being a dick.

  143. Kasalari says:

What most people either don’t understand or choose to ignore is that the bible, taken as a whole, is a good guide in living your life. I believe in the teachings of Jesus, and I do my best to follow them even though I am not a religious person. It’s just basic human decency.

  144. Spudge_Boy says:

    Kasalari,

    Exactly.

The bible is not a set of guidelines for control others, but it has been twisted over the centuries to be just that. It has been used too many times as a reason to start wars, just like Iraq.

All you have to do is read about the Crusades and you will see that is why we are in Iraq. The Crusades took part in all of the cities you here about on TV constantly. No wonder the Muslims hate Christians. The Crusaders even resorted to eating Muslims when they were out of supplies. Who are the barbarians?

  145. As says:

Daryll How do you know Jesus was straight? Just because he spent some time around around Mary Magdeline; he spent lot more time around 12 men; they ate and slept together.
Consjdering the 12 commandments, allegedly written by God/Yaweh and given to Moses. As the distillate from an all powerfuf God highest thoughts which he is giving to man, they will be helpful for morality; all in all really good compass for man.Ars you ready? The first four are injunctionsand have mothing to do wirh morality.Failure to observe them is penalized by death`–by stoning.1st have no other Gods before me 2nd shall not make a craven image 3rd shall not take name of lord in vain–Do it under penalty of death,
Nos. 5 through to 9 ( 5=honor mother and fther 6 you shall not murder 7–you shall not commit adultery. 8–you shall not steal 9__you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor 10–You shall not covet your negfbor’swife,or his manservantöx or maidservant, or anything that is your neighbor.
But it is questionable how many people honored their parients or abstained from committing murder, adultery, theft, or perjury because of them, Admonishments ´like these are found in every culture throught recorded history. It’s nothing special about their being presented in the bible,

These are not the best that God could have done; maybe he was having trouble with some physical laws or Adam or more likely Eve
the Jains their at best gave it to us in a sentence.Do notinjure, abuse, oppress, enslave, insult, torment, or kill snx creatureor living being. What a concept, and how much better than the 10 commandents. The bible is in ne way clearer. From Sam Harris ‘Letter to a Christian Nation’

  146. Gregor Samsa says:

    Don’t forget the Apocrypha.
    Comment by Spudge_Boy — January 22, 2007 @ 7:01 pm

I ran into a huge pile of Apocripha at the Borders near my house the other day, in the discount section. They also had the American translation of the Dead Sea Scrolls. I was this close to buying them but they were not annotated versions…. oh, well….

The main idea in all of the bibles is “Don’t be a dick” Which Daryll didn’t seem to figure out, because here he is, being a dick.

That’s why not only Bible literalism is bad science but also bad theology: It ignores the message that the book is supposed to help spread. You know, be a good person, a good son, a good husband, respect your neighbor, be a responsible citizen, etc. All that, down the drain if you wear a two-fabric piece of garment. I guess it’s a matter of priorities…

  147. paul says:

Gregor Samsa. You have reminded me I have a lot of reading to do on my to do list. #132 is right on the money.

  148. Earthling says:

Don’t forget democrats, I have Jesus on my side to complete this mission.

    Comment by Daryll — January 22, 2007 @ 4:13 pm

Really? Did Jesus preach bigotry and hate? The answer, of course, is no, Jesus did not preach bigotry and hate. Hence, Daryll, you do not have Jesus on your side. If you want Jesus on your side, try a little “live and let live.” You’ll find it’s much easier than hating everyone and everything that you fear.

  149. strangely enough says:

Also, you can’t be a Christian and a Democrat. Democrats (liberals) believe that you can commit every unrighteous deed without suffering the consequences. Jesus had conservative views.

Nonsense. Giving aid to the poor, forbidding usury, loving your neighbors, “the rich man getting into heaven/camel through the eye of a needle,” etc, etc, etc. Hardly planks in a GOP platform.

I don’t recall JC advocating mass slaughter, tax cuts for the rich, or obeisance to the president. I do seem to recall a passage where he apparently admonishes slaves to obey their masters… Hmmm, always wondered about that one.

  150. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

    A few questions for Daryll:

Who should a hermaphrodite be “allowed” to marry?
Did God make hermaphrodites, who are both male and female? Is it a mistake or part of his plan?
Should people who are infertile be “allowed” to marry?
Did God make them infertile or did they choose it?

And the big one: Jesus clearly stated that loving God and loving our neighbors form the basis of ALL the laws and commandments. So, how does being in a committed homosexual relationship violate these two “greatest commandments”?

  151. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

Darryl: Also, you can’t be a Christian and a Democrat.

I guess my very spiritual pastor who has increased the membership at my church isn’t really a Christian after all. Sure had me fooled.

  152. Zooey says:

    PLC,

The term “hermaphrodite” is outdated. The updated term is intersex.

    :-)

  153. Gregor Samsa says:

    Unbelievable,

Those Pat Robertson quotes are pure gold. I love the “I never said that” denial the most ;-)

False prophets never cease to amaze me in their ability to deceive, fool people.

    Paul,

Thanks for the compliment -even if you were “aiding and abetting” my opponent ;-)

  154. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

    Zooey

“Intersex”? Sounds like the name for prostitution at truckstops!

Ah well, I tend to be a bit “outdated” myself.

  155. Zooey says:

    PLC,

Use “the Google,” it’s very interesting.

Truckstop prostitutes. Heh. I like how your mind works, PLC.

  156. paul says:

Zooey. hermaphrodite, intersex, whatever, just send them over to my place. :)

  157. Whitey HermAphrodite says:

just like you didn’t chose to be straight

I sincerely doubt Daryll is straight. If he has to actively decide he doesnt want to be attracted to men, hes not straight. Would explain why he cares also… Haggard was also a little overly concerned about homosexuality..

  158. unbelievable says:

Those Pat Robertson quotes are pure gold. I love the “I never said that” denial the most ;-)

It’s was Daryll’s suggestion to read some Pat ; )

I think these neocons forget that we write stuff down…

False prophets never cease to amaze me in their ability to deceive, fool people.
    Comment by Gregor Samsa — January 22, 2007 @ 7:53

I think some people want to be fooled. And those of us who don’t, just take a good look around, at reality and our universe and see the truth… No, it’s not as dramatic or everlasting, but it is certainly less frustrating, miserable and lonely this way :)

One of my students asked me a question today that made me realize that he was looking for justification for his own realizations (I’m not vocal about my views, but I do drop hints for those who want them and need to feel like they aren’t alone in this obsessively religious community). In turn, it made me realize that you’ve really gotta want to be fooled to be able to ignore the blatantly obvious…

  159. John Gilpins says:

I would assume Allard and Musgrave have many more pressing issues, other than same-sex marriage, in their home state of Colorado. Like 100 feet of snow.

You can blame Allard’s and Musgrave’s same-sex marriage misfortunes on the WEATHER or the WEATHER, GIRLS, and these fundie, homophobes are seeking revenge.

Allard and Musgrave, at this very moment, are lobbying Colorado legislators to pass legislation specifiying that the WEATHER GIRLS’ song; ‘It’s RAINING Men’ can no longer be played on Colorado radio stations.

Allard and Musgrave insist that the title must be revised to: ‘It’s SNOWING Men.’ “It never rains in Colorado; it just snows, and snows, and snows, and snows, and snows, and snows. Take that, gays.”

Ted Haggard has avowed that he will personally protest any Colorado radio station that continues to play ‘It’s RAINING Men.’ “It’s RAINING Men’ made me gay. That song is just too danceable, fun, and lusty. Colorado radio stations must play ‘It’s SNOWING Men.”

    John

  160. Sharon Cox says:

Well, I’m going to weigh in briefly and then must leave…..Lot’s of great post’s BTW..First of all I have worked for Gay and Lesbian right’s for year’s, just like civil right’s…I believe every one should have the same right’s no matter their gender, sexual preferance or skin color…They should be allowed the very same right’s to taxation, marrage, divorce, voting and inheritance….

The bible was written by men, much like mother goose nursery rhime’s, long after the fact and little is written by Jesus, who by the way I believe was a great teacher like Buddah, Gandhi and other’s..But no more…The fact it was written by mean spirited clergy to control Pegan’s and take away their property and reduce women to servitude is well documented….Another BTW…Most of the present day christian holiday’s were stolen from the pagen’s…One last parting shot from this old woman……I think Jesus was black, probably jewish and more likely then not bysexual….Given the fact’s based on the christian bible, we are all from incestious relationship’s who care’s now…..In the beginning……Only Adam and Eve…and everyone from all the tribe’s came out of that….Think and worship as you choose or not and respect and honor your neighbor’s right to do the same, with out fear and bigotry….Blessings from your resident witch…..

    **clearing throat**

    Will do…

  162. Sharon Cox says:

I forgot to praise the funnies, more bailey’s on keyboard….Thank’s Zooey….Blessings

  163. paul says:

Sharon Cox. I’m on board with 99% of what you are saying in #162. What makes you think Jesus may have been bi-sexual?

  164. Sharon Cox says:

Paul, Having read some of the times and people during that period uncluding bit’s of the bible it is just my opinion, also forgot to add he was probably very much like modern day hippies…..Free love, forgiveness, peace……We all have our own ideas and since we haven’t ventured to the other side yet who’s to say what is or is not true, no book by a single source carries my view’s and I don’t judge other’s harshley for their view’s either…Blessings

  165. Zooey says:

    John Gilpins,

You’re so damned funny. Thanks for the laughs!

  166. Zooey says:

some day – and now i have a reason to – i will make a trip to montana…

  168. Zooey says:

    katy,

You’ll never regret it. MT is beautiful country.

  169. John Gilpins says:

    Zooey,

    Thanks for the compliment.

I know Idaho is the ‘potatoe’ ( notice my Dan Quayle spelling ) state. but it now must have a lot more snow than potatooooeeees.

It even snowed in Tucson and Phoenix which is not all that common.

    John

  170. Zooey says:

    John,

I don’t know a damn thing about potatoes, and I want to keep it that way. :) No potatoes in my part of the state, but lots of snow! It’s all going to melt this week, due to our slightly higher than freezing temps.

My son said it snowed in Portland, OR, and it brought the entire city to a stand-still. Funny.

  171. Jay Randal says:

Spring is almost here in Georgia, because all my daffodil bulbs have come up and the flowers already starting to open too.

  172. Brandon Harris says:

Daryll, I think you need to read the Bible again. There is nothing in the New Testament that condemns homosexuals. That part is in the Old Testament and that was written before Jesus was born.

Do you think Jesus wants to condemn people for who they are and then send them on down to eternal fire? I do not think so.

I believe that people are born with their sexual orientation. People are born gay. It is something that they cannot help.

Do you honestly think, Daryll, that people honeslty choose to be Gay? I do not think so.

You need to be more tolerant of other people’s differences. Gay people are not a threat to you or anyone else.

  173. Fascism Americana says:

Daryll, I’m sorry, it’s too exhausting….The US doesn’t uphold biblical law, nor is the US founded on Christian principles. Until you realize that our founders were dietists and had a healthy skepticism and loathing for religion in general you will be left in ignorance and clouded by your own opinion, fear and convenient conviction.

Lastly, no one chooses to be gay Daryll. Who would choose to be ostracized by their families, society and the governement at large. Who would choose to be confused and conflicted and in fear of being called out, beaten up or killed? I submit they do not. See you in hell I guess. You’ll be there for your intolerance and hatred towards your fellow man under the “love thy neighbor as thyself” clause. I’ll be there for generally having no faith in religion as it’s the scourge of mankind and my belief that loving your fellowman, even the sinners is ok. Oh and my past pre marital relations.
