“President Bush’s record of getting his State of the Union proposals enacted, after successes in his early years in office, has dropped off substantially.” Of the 12 initiatives that he proposed or called on Congress to pass in 2006, the White House can claim complete success on just three.
25: Number of U.S. service members killed on Saturday, marking “the third-deadliest day for American troops since the March 2003 invasion of Iraq.”
Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong said he’s concerned that President Bush has proposed cutting funding to the National Cancer Institute for the second year in a row. “The people who want to be president in 2008 should talk about something that kills 600,000 Americans a year,” he said.
Sens. John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who have strongly backed sending more U.S. troops to Iraq, indicated they may not support a promotion for Gen. George Casey, the current military commander there, because of past U.S. mistakes.
33 percent: President Bush’s approval rating according to a Washington Post-ABC poll. “Only two presidents” — Richard Nixon and Harry Truman — “have had lower approval ratings on the eve of a State of the Union speech.” 71 percent of Americans think the country is heading in the wrong direction.
Today marks the 34th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision. President Bush will call in his support to the annual anti-abortion March for Life rally. Pro-choice activists will hold a vigil at the Supreme Court and present political leaders with a pro-choice petition signed by thousands of women.
In an interview with the USA Today, Bush said he “can’t guarantee that all U.S. troops will be out of Iraq by the end of his presidency because ‘we don’t set timetables.’”
“Stretched thin from fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.S. military has sharply reduced its role in the war on drugs, leaving significant gaps in the nation’s narcotics interdiction efforts.”
The Taliban plans to open its own schools in areas of southern Afghanistan under its control, following “a violent campaign by the fundamentalist Islamic group against state schools in the five years since its ouster by U.S.-led forces.” Mohammad Hanif Atmar, Afghanistan’s education minister, said the Taliban’s announcement “is like putting salt into the wound.”
And finally: Rich Little previews a “joke” he hopefully will not tell at the White House Correspondents Association dinner. In the President’s voice: “George W. Bush here. I tell you, I’m between I-raq and a hard place.” “That’s funny,” Little claimed. “But, believe me, you won’t hear the word ‘Iraq’ out of my mouth the whole evening. They know I’m a safe bet over there at the White House.”
What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Must concern you alot that McCain, who polls ahead of Hill’reh, is espousing an even greater escalation in Iraq, all while there is movement to strike Iran.
If your position was so popular, why are your candidates polling so far behind the Reps?
January 22nd, 2007 at 9:09 am71 percent of Americans think the country is heading in the wrong direction.
Remember, Shrub is a consumate FAILURE, always has been, so he’s VERY COMFORTABLE with his low, low ratings.
Hell, he probably thinks he’s doing a BETTER job when his approval ratings are SO LOW…
The joys of being a “dry drunk”.

January 22nd, 2007 at 9:11 amabsolutely no chance that bush has a 33% approval rating - even comments on the wall street journal online are overwhemingly negative towards bush - could bush propose immpeachment and trials for the criminals in his administration including himself? that would certainly be acheviable and would provide a nice legacy and be realistic, too
January 22nd, 2007 at 9:12 amAbout two months ago I pointed out here that Tribune Co. was looking to sell its tv station, WGN, to raise money. WGN is on EVERY basic cable package in the country. WGN news is watched by millions daily.
I suggested that it’d be an incredibly shrewd buy for George Soros or some other weatlhy liberal/independent. With the purchase, immediately, liberals would have a news show to get THEIR viewpoint out to the entire country. Something to counter Fox News.
It appears too late. The Carlyle Group has made an offer and is seriously considering buying this giant cable channel. If they purchase it they’ll control WGN news and have yet another Fox News Type broadcast. Why oh why are the libs/independents so slow to understand how important media is in shaping opinion? Its infuriating!

Actually, no, it doesn’t…for two reasons:
1) Every day that John McCain advocates sending troops over to Iraq to die in this misbegotten invasion of imperial expansion…troops that don’t even exist, he alienates more Americans.
2) Mind posting a link to where McCain is “polling ahead” of Hillary? The source I found says something different.
‘there is movement’??? That’s a wonderful euphemism for ‘the neocons want it, and they mean to do it, regardless of what Congress, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the vast majority of American citizens want’.
‘there is a movement’… You make me sick, Jason.

The latest polling:
Democrats Crush Republicans in 2008 Poll
In a 2008 presidential poll, Newsweek finds a generic Democratic presidential candidate “has a 21-point lead over an unnamed GOP challenger. The race becomes much closer, however, when voters are asked to choose among actual names.”
Among named hypothetical matchups only John Edwards wins all pairings:
* Edwards 48%, McCain 43%
* Clinton 48%, McCain 47%
* Obama 46%, McCain 44%
* Edwards 48%, Giuliani 45%
* Giuliani 48%, Clinton 47%
* Giuliani 47%, Obama 45%

Here is the point, if everything is basically in a statistical lock, no one is winning or losing. You mislead things when you put comments like “Democrats Crush Republicans in 2008 Poll” because that is not the case. Nor does and unnamed Dem havea 21 point advantage over an unnamed Repub. In your best example, it is a 5 point lead.
Or, lets that the cumulative. if you total the PERCENTAGES as points, the Dems come up with 285 and and the Repubs 271. A difference of 14 points. (yes, I know this is not the correct way to total it.) Also if you AVERAGE the PERCENTAGES (285 divded by 6) you get and average of 47.5 for the Dems. For the Repubs (271 divided by 6) you get an average of 45.1. A difference of 2.4. Where is this presumed 21 point lead?

When you have as clear a statement as this to tell you how Americans feel about escalation:
The poll also finds that the public trusts congressional Democrats over Bush to deal with the conflict by a margin of 60 percent to 33 percent.
or this:
The Post-ABC poll shows that 65 percent of Americans oppose sending more troop to Iraq; it was 61 percent immediately after the president unveiled the plan on Jan. 10 in a nationally televised address.
why would you need to try and interpret the results of outdated polls to figure it out?
January 22nd, 2007 at 10:14 amBeing a yes man has suddenly gotten more difficult. General Casey decided that survival in the military under Bush and Rumsfeld required that he become a yes man by showing more concerns for his military career than for the soldiers he commanded. Because his bosses were wrong he has likewise been wrong. Now we see that his career may be going down the tubes due to that decision. Unlike McCain, I have long been a critic of the Generals in Iraq like Casey that put their military career ahead of core military principles in the execution of the Iraq war. While I agree with McCain that Gen. Casey should not receive Senate confirmation to a new post I find his reasoning for just now making this statement both odd and politically suspect.
January 22nd, 2007 at 10:16 am-GSD, thanks for clearing that up. But I still fail to see the large lead. Eveything is still pretty well even (within the margin of error) with a long way to go.
January 22nd, 2007 at 10:17 amSo two Senators with military experience are going to vote against the general because they won’t vote against Bush who gave the generals an impossible plan.
January 22nd, 2007 at 10:19 am#41 — I agree….shame on these armchair ex-military hacks who continue to mislead Americans about the possibility of military success in Iraq. It is moronic to think that putting young Americans in the way of death will mend thousands of years of hatred. We destroyed the only thing holding Iraq together and it cannot be repaired with guns and dead American soldiers.

From Huffington Post:
Burdened U.S. military cuts role in drug war
Air and sea patrolling is slashed on southern smuggling routes.
By Josh Meyer, Times Staff Writer
January 22, 2007
WASHINGTON — Stretched thin from fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.S. military has sharply reduced its role in the war on drugs, leaving significant gaps in the nation’s narcotics interdiction efforts.
Since 1989, Congress has directed the Pentagon to be the lead federal agency in detecting and monitoring illegal narcotics shipments headed to the United States by air and sea and in supporting Coast Guard efforts to intercept them. In the early 1990s, at the height of the drug war, U.S. military planes and boats filled the southern skies and waters in search of cocaine-laden vessels coming from Colombia and elsewhere in South America.
But since 2002, the military has withdrawn many of those resources, according to more than a dozen current and former counter-narcotics officials, as well as a review of congressional, military and Homeland Security documents.
Internal records show that in the last four years the Pentagon has reduced by more than 62% its surveillance flight-hours over Caribbean and Pacific Ocean routes that are used to smuggle cocaine, marijuana and, increasingly, Colombian-produced heroin. At the same time, the Navy is deploying one-third fewer patrol boats in search of smugglers.
The Defense Department also plans to withdraw as many as 10 Black Hawk helicopters that have been used by a multi-agency task force to move quickly to make drug seizures and arrests in the Caribbean, a major hub for drugs heading to the United States.
And the military has deactivated many of the high-tech surveillance “aerostats,” or radar balloons, that once guarded the entire southern border, saying it lacks the funds to restore and maintain them.
The Department of Defense defended its policy shift in a budget document sent to Congress in October: “The DOD position is that detecting drug trafficking is a lower priority than supporting our service members on ongoing combat missions.”
Members of Congress and drug-control officials have said the Pentagon’s cuts and redeployments have hamstrung the U.S. drug interdiction effort at a time when an estimated 1,000 metric tons of inexpensive, high-quality cocaine is entering the country each year.

There is very little I can add to what other posters have said to skilfully rip your inane post apart except one thing: You have some gall to come here and post taunting comments, when it is you you have been wrong all along; wrong about the invasion, wrong about the occupation, wrong in your support of Pres Bush’s other misguided initiatives, wrong about Global Warming, and more recently, wrong in your predictions about the mid-term elections.
In true Bush cultist fashion, you do not base your opinions on reality, Mr. “Standford/Ivy League Graduate” Hendler. But we already know that.

January 22nd, 2007 at 1:27 pmspeaking of GEN. CASEY, this story was in my local paper… found this link at the google news:
Casey: Troops might start leaving Iraq in summer
By ROBERT BURNS, The Associated Press
TALLIL AIR BASE, Iraq - President Bush’s troop increase in Iraq is not selling well at home, in part because critics worry that it won’t work and that even more troops might be on the way. But the top U.S. commander in the country is sounding a more optimistic note.
Gen. George Casey told reporters Friday that even as the first of the 21,500 U.S. reinforcements take their positions, security in the country might improve enough for the extra forces to start leaving by late summer.
“You’re going to see some progress gradually over the next 60 to 90 days,” Casey said, standing alongside the visiting Defense Secretary Robert Gates.
Asked when he thought some of the added U.S. troops could be pulled back, Casey replied, “I believe the projections are late summer, but the first troops are just arriving,” so nothing is sure.

Why Do Good? Brain Study Offers Clues

MONDAY, Jan. 22 (HealthDay News) — People may not perform selfless acts just for an emotional reward, a new brain study suggests.
Instead, they may do good because they’re acutely tuned into the needs and actions of others.

#80 - katy,
January 22nd, 2007 at 1:35 pmIt’s called “Bait and Switch.”
katy - It did indeed seem wierd of wierds that it was supposed to take several months to deploy (since most of the buildup was stop loss and keeping scheduled rotations in country). That would mean that as soon as they are all there, they can start coming back.
January 22nd, 2007 at 2:04 pmHmmmm.
Casey’s a short timer, for sure.
Remember, Shrub is a consumate FAILURE, always has been, so he’s VERY COMFORTABLE with his low, low ratings.

This posting is proof positive that…
…even well-informed, well-intentioned, Progressives have a hard time digesting the concept of…
…the criminal Bushites stealing so much money…
…that approval/disapproval ratings are the least of their concerns…
…Too many of us cannot bring ourselves to believe that this administration is perpetrating (through the office of the POTUS)…
…the biggest FRAUD, con job, rip off of the American tax payers in history…
…$9 billion dollars is NOTHING compared to the overall tally they’ve stolen through Iraq no-bid contracts, contracts to non-existent companies, security companies….
…the list goes on and on…
…then add on Katrina, tax breaks to oil companies, tax amnesty (remember that one when the Bushites first rolled into D.C.?)
…the Repulsivescam-led Congress voted in a one-time tax amnesty for offshore corporations to declare their offshore profits at a lesser rate of (from 35%) down to 5%…
…they said it would bring more corporate criminal enterprises into the fold, and to have them pay a portion of their taxes owed, and keep the rest to reinvest in the American economy…
…but as we all know now, they took their windfalls and invested them in emerging (foreign) markets…
…now the Bush dollar is tanking, and there are plans to merge U.S. , Canadian, and Mexican currencies into an “Amero” (like the European Euro)…
Nope, I’d say Bushiva and L’il Dick have done exactly what they set out to do…
January 22nd, 2007 at 2:08 pmWonder if there are any activest’s in Billings, Montana…I can only hope….Blessings

January 22nd, 2007 at 3:24 pmSeven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong said he’s concerned that President Bush has proposed cutting funding to the National Cancer Institute for the second year in a row. “The people who want to be president in 2008 should talk about something that kills 600,000 Americans a year,†he said.
Marijuana. The chemical THC injected into the tumor. Studies have already been done showing it eliminates cancer. You heard it here first folks.

Does this mean that Lance won’t be accepting any more “Tour De Crawford” invitations to go biking with Bush any time soon, since he’s not only not providing more funding but is in fact proposing cuts in funding? Yeah, Lance — this is the sort of thanks you get from Bush for providing him with such a wonderful photo-op…
