Yesterday on CNN Headline News, host Glenn Beck addressed the controversy raised after Grey’s Anatomy star Isaiah Washington called his castmate T.R. Knight a “faggot.”
Beck called the New York Times’s refusal to print the anti-gay slur “amazing,” claiming that “faggot” is nothing more than a “naughty name.” Watch it:
Good Morning America (GMA) recently tapped Beck to be a regular commentator on its show. GMA senior executive producer Jim Murphy called Beck a “leading cultural commentator with a distinct voice.”
(HT: AMERICAblog and My Two Sense)
Transcript:
GLENN BECK, HOST: But anyway, Dave, what is the — what is the controversy? One of the guys called another guy a naughty name.
DAVE GLOVER, RADIO TALK SHOW HOST: Yes. Basically you have Isaiah Washington, who’s one of the stars of the show, who referred to one of his co-stars during a heated argument as a derogatory term for a gay man that starts with “F”, rhymes with maggot. Did it a couple more times after that. And do you like how I did that?
BECK: Yes.
GLOVER: And…
BECK: Do you know that “The New York Times” wouldn’t even print — I mean, we can say the word. We`re having an adult conversation here. Wouldn’t even print the word “fagot.”
GLOVER: Right.
BECK: Wouldn’t print it. I find that amazing.
GMA senior executive producer Jim Murphy should have called Beck something similar to what Howard Johnson’s wife called Gov. LePetomane in her letter…
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:12 amOOps.. wrong thread, I was looking for daryll……..
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:14 amRaven, hang around, there’s a very good PROBABILITY that Daryll will show up dissing gays on the thread.
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:18 amBeck is a 4 letter word~!
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:20 amhe is certainly “distinctly vocal in his anti-cultural lamentations”
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:21 amDon’t tell me you are only now realizing that Glenn Beck is a retard. It always appearred to me that he was using his show as some type of psychological therapy for himself, much as Jane Pauley does.
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:24 amI have written CNN about this idiot but he still is around. Guess my opinion about a rascist bigot doesn’t hold much water at CNN. CNN has been slowly sliding into FUX territory and I am afraid it won’t come back.
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:26 amYou folks (as always) are missing the point.
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:29 am#6, You’re using language more offensive than Beck. Speaking of therapy, have you considered it? Beck is a jerk. Calling someone a ‘retard’ is being even more of a jerk.
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:29 amGo pull out that Mary Matalin pic & spank some monkey, but please stay out of an adult conversation.
Piddles,
Faggot is a horrible term to describe an individual in a same-sex relationship. They should be categorized as gays, lesbians, homosexuals or sinners.
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:31 amKevin sez:
Enlighten us, Kevin. What is the point, then?
(Don’t hurt yourself.)
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:33 amYou folks (as always) are missing the point.
Comment by Kevin
Enlighten us.
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:33 amKevin
How can we miss the point? It’s an obvious feature of Beck’s head, which would fit a pointy little white hood very well.
Would you like to try to defend Beck? Or do you just want to post some vague regressive rhetoric?
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:34 amDaryll
How nice of you to offer your more “positive” terminology.
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:36 amAs for me, I’ll just keep calling them “people”.
Daryll sez:
Since, in the eyes of the Lord, we are all sinners, Daryll’s statement is technically correct.
Thanks for going to bat for gays, Daryll. Commendable.
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:36 amIf Beck says that faggot is just a naughty name, then I’m sure he won’t mind me saying that he is hardly a moral teacher and he is not the final word. Racial, sexual and personal slurs against anyone is nothing short of a hate crime/attack and should not be tolerated. It’s time to clean up this planet and the people on it that use this negative crap like an exercise tool. If people were more comfortable in thier own skin, they wouldn’t try to be such social bullies.
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:51 amRaven – #10 Ding Ding Ding..
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:52 amWhat do I win?
The correct word to describe Glenn Beck has four letters.
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:52 amAre we afraid of words now? Is that where we’re going? Faggot is just a WORD people, insulting, maybe, but still just a word. As Lewis Black says: there is no bad language. You’re the ASS if you let yourself get offended by three letters A S S. It’s about time we got less offended by books and words and more offended by actions like those that Beck and Bush are committing: deceit, treason, grand theft of treasury… you f!cking name it. You know Bush didn’t have to use any ‘bad language’ but still managed to create the worst war ever, right?
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:53 amBut Barbara Boxer’s comment about Condi Rice was a moral outrage to the wingers?
Holy shit what a psychotic bunch.
-GSD
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:54 amooh ooh I love vague regressive rhetoric…more please!!!
Regardless of the insults that you want to throw at Glenn Beck
there is one objective truth and that is that he is a bigot.
That’s not being mean, but rather looking at this objectively.
He asked a congressman elect if he was working with al-quaeda…
He uses bigoted slurs such as in this example.
What’s next opening every show with:
“America is turning into spic-land let’s do something about it.”
Then presenting ways to shoot mexicans.
Daryll and others seem to thing there is something wrong with gays.
Everyone of YOU has someone gay in their family whether or not YOU know it.
I had an uncle that was gay. I didn’t even know it until I was 15. Everyone in the family knew…no one really cared. He was and remains my favorite uncle.
Long story short what business of yours is it what someone else does in the bedroom.
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:55 amRUCerious..
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:58 amFor being today’s prominent, and prize winning, prognosticator, I have for you one hundred Attaboys, and a thousand Hail Harry’s
TripMaster Monkey
I guess Kevin’s post today was just a drive-by trolling.
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:59 amHow disappointing on GMA’s part. Charles Gibson would never have stood for an endorsement of a bigoted hack like Beck.
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:59 amThe “naughty name” that comes to mind when the subject of Glenn Beck comes up would be more of an insult by association to vinegar, water and the pouch in which they travel
January 23rd, 2007 at 12:00 pmCNN has been slowly sliding into FUX territory and I am afraid it won’t come back.
Comment by dlet #7
Yeah dlet,
I noticed that too…
…and find it funny how Wolf and the gang pounced on the Fox Propaganda Networks Obama hatchet job…
…Wolf makes sure to introduce CNN’s piece as a investigative journalistic piece ‘par excellence’ (so to speak)…
…I almost choked!
January 23rd, 2007 at 12:05 pm#10- And, which are you? Homosexual? Sinner? Or, judge and jury?
January 23rd, 2007 at 12:06 pmJericho
Language is extremely important. How we say things and the labels we use are behaviors that are clues to other behaviors that we would take or condone. Bush did use “bad” language to push his war in Iraq and to label opposition. The military has always used dehumanizing language to describe an enemy in order to make it easier to engage in killing behavior. Labels are a shorthand form of communication of patterns of acceptable behavior.
Challenging the language is challenging the whole justification frame of reference for other, more serious behavior.
January 23rd, 2007 at 12:07 pm#10- And, which are you? Homosexual? Sinner? Or, judge and jury?
Comment by Liberal in New Mexico — January 23, 2007 @ 12:06 pm
None of the above, thank God! I don’t condone homosexuality, but I do respect them as equals.
January 23rd, 2007 at 12:18 pmSaw part of beck’s show once, wanted to puke…..Wondering when and if he will be outed for some bad behavior….Reformed drunk’s tend to be like bush some times and the show I saw was a duplicate of the old white hooded mob’s we witnessed in the 50’s…..I can find no value in watching his show and think CNN need’s to eliminate people like him and let them join up with the rich telavangelests they help pramote……..Blessings
January 23rd, 2007 at 12:20 pm“There is no such thing as bad publicity except your own obituary. ”
Brendan Behan
Irish author & dramatist (1923 – 1964)
The sponsors of Glenn Beck must be salivating over all this lovely publicity they are recieving. If the man offends you — and I do find him offensive — then the best thing you can do is greet him with a wall of silence and not patronize his sponsors. Foaming at the mouth creates word of mouth which creates curiosity which creates buzz which creates ratings which feeds the beast.
January 23rd, 2007 at 12:22 pmSo if I call Beck a Nazi, it’s just a naughty name? Naughty Nazi’s…sounds like a musical number from the Producers.
January 23rd, 2007 at 12:32 pmBeck is a genius in quick thought and jabs. His eyes say more than his acidic tongue. He is a TV Limbaugh. There is more substance in a tofu salad than a Beck show but he will be here for awhile.
Sheep love to be led.
January 23rd, 2007 at 12:34 pmGlenn Beck should be terminated from employment at CNN! He can go work for FOX News if they need another bigot for one of their programs!
January 23rd, 2007 at 12:34 pmI don’t condone homosexuality, but I do respect them as equals.
Comment by Daryll
Common Daryll, tell the truth. What about the ones who dress up (or undress) for the Gay Pride parade in San Francisco?
Remember, you are on the record here.
January 23rd, 2007 at 12:35 pm#10, so you are none of the above?
January 23rd, 2007 at 12:36 pmNot even a siner? If you are a Christian, you just said you were better tan Jesus!!!
He is right to be astonished that the NYT wouldn’t print the word. If we are adults we should be able to discuss the matter as such: but aren’t we all doing the same things as Beck and the right to monitor these idiots (yes, “faggot” is not simply a naughty name–there he is very, very wrong–it is a hate filled term akin to any other racial epithet) as closely as they monitor the NYT? Clearly these “culture warriors” wait in anticipation for their daily dose of NYT and CNN and NBC and want to pounce on every or any little thing that can be added to the flames of the cultural conflagration only to rile their base. But when we mull over the same things are we not doing the same. The man IS a racist and homophobic slug. So what? The reall issue is so much bigger. All the lefties fall into this trap over and over again by obsessing over the minutiae instead of the big picture: broad media reform. And that, I think, is a bi-partisan issue. Unfortuately, like evrything else in this culture, the war is being waged by extremist dolts who take whatever is authentic in their party’s cause to its ridiculous ends. Yes, the homophobe is right: the NYT should not edit out such words. Yes, the homophobe is beastly for being a homophobe. Butisn’t the real issue why the hell is the homophobe on TV to begin with? And aren’t you inspiring CNN to keep him there by WATCHING at all?
January 23rd, 2007 at 12:40 pmYou can tell CNN what you think:
http://www.cnn.com/feedback/forms/form4a.html?1
January 23rd, 2007 at 12:46 pmDemokritos > that is WHY I want CNN to fire Beck > WHY should he be allowed to spew his bigotry on the TV?
January 23rd, 2007 at 12:47 pmWhose the bullet-head in the photo?
January 23rd, 2007 at 12:47 pmGlenn Beck: #24 of the 50 Most Loathsome Americans
http://buffalobeast.com/113/50_most_loathsome_2006.htm
Highlight: “It’s like someone found a manic, doom-prophesying hobo in a sandwich board, shaved him, shot him full of Zoloft and gave him a show.”
January 23rd, 2007 at 12:51 pmBeck is allowed to spew on CNN because he appeals to a (sic) base who might not otherwise watch CNN. In other words, it helps CNN’s bottom line.
January 23rd, 2007 at 12:54 pmSuch commentary allows other bigots and racists to feel like they can relate to the majority of the human race.
#29- It looks as though you opened up a can of equalized, tan Jesuses, here. Leave it to some born again to point out the sublime.
January 23rd, 2007 at 1:14 pmLooks like Beck is spewing to a Nazi skin head guy in the pic at the top. CNN must be forced to fire him and then apologize to all their viewers!
January 23rd, 2007 at 1:16 pmDamn,I miss Ted Turner.
January 23rd, 2007 at 1:23 pmBeck is an obvious faggot, and the New York Times can quote me on that.
January 23rd, 2007 at 1:29 pm#22, would that be a “hosary”?
January 23rd, 2007 at 1:35 pmGlenn Beck obvoiusly doesn’t know what’s going on around him. He thinks beastiality is the same as murder. Likely is it that he thinks gay sex is the same as murder. This guy has drunk so much that his brain is fried, just like President Bush.
January 23rd, 2007 at 1:44 pmInteresting that Beck seems to have no problem with the ‘naughty word’ but has considerable difficulty actually saying it. I suspect he would have something to say about the Time’s publishing derogatory terms for the followers of religions he’s sympathetic to. He attempts to play the ‘every man’, but he doesn’t hide his motives too well.
January 23rd, 2007 at 1:53 pmYeah, I believe that’s what the killers of Matthew Shephard said when they beat and pistol-whipped him and left him to die—”Matthew, you naughty boy! Take that.” Are we living in the 21st century or did I miss something? Being gay myself, I wonder if Glenn is compensating? I can easily picture him in a big poufy shirt, drinking a martini and going on about Bette Davis in “All About Eve”. “Simply adore that movie!!!”, says Beck.
January 23rd, 2007 at 2:04 pmSo…
Beck thinks ‘faggot’ is a naughty word… well, does he think ‘ni**er’ is a naughty word too? Or how about referring to a jewish person as a ‘k**e’?
To me all three terms are roughly equivalent- they are about the most offensive term possible- and should receive equal disapproval. Mainstream use of these terms, or their use in general discourse, promotes the belief that these are acceptable terms of abuse. Of course they aren’t.
And to the guy that said that he respects gays as equals… I presume you are ok with books being brought out where a child has two mothers or fathers, and films produced with a gay relationship at the centre, et cetera…
January 23rd, 2007 at 2:08 pmMy previous comment might sound a bit extreme, but if you accept the following premises it follows:
1. Being gay is not a matter of choice- surely everyone knows this by now!
2. Historically- right up to the present- gays constitute a persecuted minority.
3. Gays posess identical rights to everyone else
But all this is surely obvious…!
January 23rd, 2007 at 2:15 pmHaving been censored now twice by TP for using (and I’ll shorten it now) the “N” word to show how it is just as bad to say “faggot” as it is to say the “N” word, unfortunately proves that Think Progress is as deep in the dark ages as Beck. To TP and everyone here, I’ll say it again (and hopefully will not be censored) that if we were talking about someone using the “N” word, we would not be having this discussion because that person would have been fired immediately. “Faggot” is just as ugly a word as the “N” word. And TP is just as backwards as Beck because TP will allow people to use the word “faggot” until the cows come home, yet they censor the “N” word. To TP, you’re just as bad as Beck. Why don’t you wake up. Perhaps you might want to begin censoring the word “faggot” so people will not be as offended as they would be to read the “N” word. Both are ugly slurs. Or don’t you guys at TP get that yet.
January 23rd, 2007 at 2:24 pmTo #52 – no, gays do not possess identical rights to everyone else. Most people don’t know the following (and are amazed when they find out):
In the majority of places in this country, my boss could come up to me and say “you’re fired”, and if I asked why, he could say “because you’re gay and I don’t like gays”. And this would be perfectly legal – there’s absolutely nothing I can do about it, unless there’s a specific law against discrimination of sexual orientation. Nothing. I told this to my brother, a staunch conservative, and he wouldn’t believe me. Obviously this is not “identical rights”.
Another example is housing. In most places, if I’m trying to rent an apartment, a landlord can deny me a place, telling me that he doesn’t want faggots in his building. Again, this is perfectly legal, and I would have no legal right to counter this bigotry.
These are the 2 main examples. Tell me again #52, would you say that these are identical rights to straights???
January 23rd, 2007 at 2:37 pm54,
Perhaps you mean identical under the law, whereas i mean identical human rights?
As a gay guy, I really sympathise with your situation. In England (where i live) we have to comply with the European Human Rights Act, which enforces equal treatment on the basis of equal human rights. Going through parliament now is a bill that outlaws any (I think) discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
In bygone days- like the 1960s- apparently hostel owners used to put signs up saying ‘no blacks or irish need apply’. Now it will be illegal to mete the same treatment out to homosexuals too, thank god.
January 23rd, 2007 at 2:49 pmIt’s time to put an end to Mr. Beck’s career.
January 23rd, 2007 at 3:16 pmchicago guy and Prince Myshkin
You two are in agreement. Gays, as human beings, have identical rights because, as our Declaration of Independence stated, these rights are inherent. However, society and governments do not always respect and protect those rights.
January 23rd, 2007 at 3:20 pmPS – and if Mr. Beck’s opinions constitute “leading” cultural commentary, then perhaps its best that America takes every nuclear weapon she is dying to use…and point them at his festering aneuploidic yap.
January 23rd, 2007 at 3:21 pmI feel that gays and straights should have equal rights. An employer, landlord or school has no right to discriminate against someone because they are gay, lesbian, transgender or bi-sexual. To prevent this type of discrimination, there should be fairness ordinances in every city in the U.S.A. because homosexuals cannot help who they are. They are not gay by choice, they were born that way.
January 23rd, 2007 at 3:43 pm57,
Of course you are right. My question for you is: when there is a conflict between a secular and a religious law, which takes precedence? Do you keep your religious conviction purely for the private sphere? How does your religious conviction affect your political outlook?
I know it’s a lot to answer, but I promise I’m genuinely interested!
January 23rd, 2007 at 3:55 pmIsn’t it amazing that everyone is much more concerned with the use of said “hate language” than with the sentiments behind it. We jump on people for using racial slurs and such, but in the stories we read and in the news spots we see we hardly ever hear about the context of the ‘incident’ until much later.
In any case, once you get an apology, how about dropping the subject?
January 23rd, 2007 at 4:25 pmWell, there you have it. You can say anything you want so long as you have “a distinctive voice.”
January 23rd, 2007 at 5:02 pmGlenn Beck reminds me of this real mama’s boy that I used to pick on in elementary school, just to see if I could make him cry.
Seeing him later as a whiny-assed adult, I still want to kick his ass and make him cry.
I’d say that it’s a pretty good argument for not allowing kids like me to pick on kids like him — they only grow up wanting to avenge themselves on the entire world for the cruelties inflicted upon them in childhood.
January 23rd, 2007 at 5:30 pmIf you want to fight Beck’s placement on GMA, this is what you do.
Tape/record the show.
Watch it carefully, pen & paper in hand. Skip through the ‘meat’ of the show and pay attention to the commercials. Write down the name of every product advertised.
Write letters to every advertiser informing them that you aren’t going to buy their stuff until they help you pressure GMA to fire Beck.
Simple, really.
January 23rd, 2007 at 6:44 pmThat’s because Glenn Beck is a ‘faggot’.
January 23rd, 2007 at 6:50 pmWho’s the big bear in the other frame? He reminds me of one of the bartenders at the Faultline
January 23rd, 2007 at 7:12 pmNone of the above, thank God! I don’t condone homosexuality, but I do respect them as equals.
Comment by Daryll
Don’t lie, Daryll. God knows when you lie.
January 23rd, 2007 at 8:17 pmWhen will ABC and CNN cut this guy loose? He’s an .
January 23rd, 2007 at 9:50 pmTo #55…. I wouldn’t stake your future on the European whatever of Human Rights… a potential minister in the upcoming Brown gov’t has already threatened to have UK withdraw from it because the treaty is placing the UK at risk to the criminals who claim rights under the treaty.
January 24th, 2007 at 2:52 amWhat I find amazing is the shallowness of all the complaining here that Beck said “faggot”. All he did was report that someone else said it. Whopty do.
January 24th, 2007 at 2:53 amAnyone who has spent any time in “the rooms” will recognize Beck for what he is: like bitter fellow wankers Don Imus and Dave Mustaine, they are vile, nasty ex-dopers who are bitter mostly because they can’t get high anymore (on the ilicit stuff) with all their friends in “the biz” who can do it and function. They have to stick to the prescribed shit and it just doesn’t have the same “kick’ (or cachet) and they resent the shit out of it. Hence the daily snarky nastiness.
January 24th, 2007 at 5:00 am71. What you said is about 10x more nasty than anything I ever heard them say.
January 24th, 2007 at 7:28 amWow, all this drama about someone going on about the word faggot. I would love only to be referred by only one word, however, my own community decides to use several to describe me….Queen, Bottom, Bear, Chubby, etc…..
Get over it and find a better dead horse to beat!
January 24th, 2007 at 7:42 am#59-Brandon Harris, you say gay people “can’t help who they are”.Kinda like like black people “can’t help it” that thier skin is darker, or for that matter, white people “can’t help it” that thier skin is pale? This is akin to saying” Those poor souls, I must pity them for being different from me.”Would you like it if your gay friends said about you,” Poor Brandon, he can’t help it that he’s straight. He was born that way, you know.”?By making that comment, you imply that there is a problem with someone being gay.The only problem is with a society that refuses to accept ALL of it’s people for who they are-period.
January 24th, 2007 at 10:11 amAs for Beck, he CAN help it.Bigotry is learned behavior,he wasn’t born that way, but chooses to be a complete ass.I agree that anyone who disagrees with him being given a public format to poison should contact the sponsers of the show and threaten to boycott thier products until pressure is brought to fire the jerk.
hello, I’m new to this site.
I am a gay person who believes that censorship of hate speech is wrong and misguided. If someone wants to use the N word or fag word, then let him! Censorship only drives bigots to use euphemisms or code words that are just as full of hate, but considered by the mainstream to be more acceptable.
Readers or listeners can usually figure out by context the intent the person who uses a word. I love it when my lover calls me “Faggot.” “Queer” used to be a hate word, but now it can be a compliment.
January 24th, 2007 at 11:23 am#70, the point is that Beck didn’t think it was all that big a deal for Isiah Washington to call an openly gay co-worker a hateful word, and couldn’t believe that a newspaper would choose not to print the word out of respect for people’s sensibilities. Some people’s sensibilities count more than others, apparently.
#75, in all due respect, I cannot agree with the “appropriation” argument . Its all very well and good for you not to wince when your boyfriend calls you a fag because you’ve normalized it, but that normalization has a pernicious effect on teenagers and other immature people like Glenn Beck. Bullies take advantage of it, and the gay youth still learning to deal with this hostility do not have the same defense mechanisms you have installed.
Outlawing hate speech at school is censorship, and while some take their hate underground, at least fewer people are exposed to it while they are forced to be at school, and they grow up in an environment where respectable people pause and consider other people before saying whatever pops into their head. The social norm is mutual respect, and that’s a good thing. You can teach empathy, but you have to be willing to try, and you can’t teach a thing without expectations. Ask any parent.
The Grey’s Anatomy drama is not censorship. It is asking for people to show some self-restraint in the name of civility. It is not unreasonable for employers to expect their employees to be decent to each other, as working in a hostile environment degrades productivity.
>>”Readers or listeners can usually figure out by context the intent the person who uses a word. ”
Usually. But throwing around hateful language in any context still gives licence to others.
Besides, the point isn’t just whether one can discern the intent. It is how to respond. If Isiah Washington was being hateful, then TR Knight shouldn’t be expected to let it slide. That connotes that he shouldn’t be offended. By calling him out for his rudeness, Knight is effectively asking Washington — and everyone else — to exercise some self-restraint. By labeling that “censorship,” you have endorsed the idea that it is unreasonable to expect people to refrain from using hateful language.
And that is hard to distinguish from the idea that it is unreasonable to expect people to change their gut-level opinion about gay people. Moral relativism, yuck. I cannot agree. People who judge gays as less worthy people on the basis of their sexuality are wrong and unreasonable, and they need to be confronted.
In all due respect, I think you are living in a bubble. The only gay people I know who casually throw around “fag” with each other are urban subculture ghetto dwellers, and I don’t mean that as an insult at all. I just mean to suggest that maybe your theory doesn’t work so well in mixed company that might not want to be cool in the first place.
January 24th, 2007 at 2:03 pm76: I’m gay. I couldn’t care less who says the word “faggot” and I couldn’t care less even more so if someone used that word to quote someone verbatum.
Ever watch South Park? Cartman must say Faggot 5 times a episode.
I have no opinion on Isiah because I really don’t care, I don’t live my life worry about what word some silly actor said on some silly award show, so I haven’t bothered to look into what he actual said.
Now I noticed you used the word “fag”, so that makes you just as evil as Glenn Beck.
See how silly that is
January 24th, 2007 at 2:35 pmI can’t remember what the letter called Lepetomane???
January 24th, 2007 at 4:23 pmThey, the right-wing nuts, now have a couple, Glenn Beck and Ann Coulter.
Don’t they make a lovely pair… Both filled with hate, never missing an opportunity to spread slime, and just imagine what their descendants would be like.
They both make wicked witches seem like Snow White.
January 24th, 2007 at 5:43 pmDruthers, I’m sure your show of love puts them to shame.
January 24th, 2007 at 6:37 pmBeck is AWESOME. He is the only voice of reason on CNN. All you lame folks who get your panties in a bunch because of one simple word. Faggot is not racist it is not antisemitic, nor is it offensive. I have seen gays call each other faggot in front of others. Similarly with the ‘N’ word, I have seen many people use it without any concern for who may hear. Stop the silliness you lame people. Learn right and wrong and do the right thing. You secular progressives will be the death of this great country.
I could care less how much you hate me. I know my destiny and it will exceed you and your silly gay agenda.
January 24th, 2007 at 10:13 pmit’s racist to accuse a black person of homophobia.
January 25th, 2007 at 1:27 pm#16 Randy Nason,
How would you go about “cleaning up this planet”, and who would get to judge what is wrong and what is right? I guess a crucifix in a jar of urine is art, but uttering the word “faggot” is punishable…..by what?
Once this countrie’s moral attitudes were set and enforced by fundamental christians, but now apparently it’s liberals. Reading a post like yours makes me realize the only difference between the two is the infraction, while the punishment remains the same.
January 25th, 2007 at 1:42 pmI am going to use another ‘N’ word here to express my feelings.
January 25th, 2007 at 1:50 pmNONSENSE….this using words to describe a person, his lifestyle or choises in that lifestyle is just NUTS. You can call me anything you want….I’ll get over it….like my dad says…just don’t call me late for dinner.
This conversation is a waste of time and breath.
If we could all grow the kind of thick skin that the average white male (the only ethnic group it is ok to say anything about at anytime) is forced to develop , then we all would probably get along better.

Niiiiiiiice hypocrisy “Pinko”.
Why do idiot liberals always not understand their own blatant hypocrisy??!!
Glen Beck is an idiot and should apologize.
January 25th, 2007 at 3:06 pmSetting libel, slander and defamation of character protections under U.S. law aside… Doesn’t Washington have the right to fell, think and express (Freedom of Speech – U.S. Constitution) the way he wishes? He has not harmed any but himself, based on public reaction. Only if there is an ethics or public behaviour clause in his employment contract can he be removed/cancellation of contract/employment with Disney Corp. or subsidiary of before mentioned “parent companyâ€. Good luck Washington. I may or may not agree with you but this is America…last I checked. Cheers Beck, for the realization that the fear of open discussion, in a mature conversation, is not American. We should not fear to discuss that “naughty†or hateful speech is not a disease but just bad behaviour of ignorant individuals.
January 25th, 2007 at 3:32 pmI really don’t see the problem. A pervert is a pervert is a pervert. A queer is a queer is a queer. If someone’s a queer, then why not be proud of it instead of trying to hide behind some phony made up definintion? That seems just a little hypocritacl to me.
January 25th, 2007 at 3:46 pm87. it’s rightwing scum like you who somehow think that forcing isaiahwashington to check into a reprogramming clinic is some sort of “over-reaction.” he and beck should be in prison.
January 25th, 2007 at 4:02 pm89: He should be in prison? So much for Freedom and the 1st Amendment.
Is that what liberalism is today? Apparently so.
January 25th, 2007 at 8:30 pmYou people are unbelievable. No mention of the guy who actually used ‘faggot’ as a put down but you all, Kevin aside, can’t get past Glenn ‘relating the story.’ When have liberals ever worried about incindary language(except when they’re on the recieving end)?
How do you people get through life with such thin skins?
You go Glenn!
January 26th, 2007 at 9:33 amIsn’t Glenn Beck the only conservative on CNN? He is moderately conservative and you idiots won’t even tolerate him. You completely missed the point on this one. What is it about lefty’s only listening to a tiny clip and thinking they know someone– happens all the time.
January 30th, 2007 at 8:29 pmDubya: the Left is all about the sanctimoniousness of ignorance.
January 30th, 2007 at 8:47 pmIf it quacks like a duck.. hopefully he’s not a far -right winger like Pat buchanan. I find the Left much more palatable than him.
January 30th, 2007 at 9:09 pmWho smokes faggots in this comments section? I know I don’t. My mum and pappy used to smoke the fags all the time, now I can’t stand them. They are totally queer. I gotta catch the ferry now!! Cheers you homosexuals!
February 1st, 2007 at 3:53 amI thought the left had open minds and support free speech. Wait a minute that’s right only if you are on the left side. It is amazing how many of you want to shut him up and get him fired. I guess you want to live in a communist state. By the way he was not calling someone a faggot he was repeating what someone else said.
February 2nd, 2007 at 12:27 amIf you pissed, shit and puked in a large iron pot for a week, then boiled it down to a pussy slime…
It would still have more intelligence, decency and awareness then Glenn Beck.
February 4th, 2007 at 7:02 pmThe truth causes the most disturbing reaction among those who feel the sting and are condemed by their actions. The natural response is to condem the condemor. Glenn Beck is eerily correct on most issues. Listen and learn something!
February 7th, 2007 at 5:22 pmCNN’s Glenn Beck Calls Anti-Gay Slur Simply A ‘Naughty Name’ —– …. uhmm why the hell is this a headline, – thats what it is , its a degrading name, apparently “liberals” will jump on any chance to try to smear someone like glenn regardless of how absurd it is, !!! haha, this is amusing, why is this even news, haha you cant let peoples stupidity get you all worked up or youll go crazy i guess you just gotta accept it sumtimes and do your best to present your case, anyway he has a tremendous radio show, (i like the radio show better than the tv show – its not as restrictive) its highly entertaining and sumtimes the bits are downright laught out loud funny ( sumtimes ill sneak headphones in my hat to work and burst out laughing around others doing my best to hold it in hah) even sumtimes preferable over fm staion morning shows although he does have a balance between serious and funny – the funny thing is that most of these negative comments are probably from people who dont even listen to the radio show and jump to conclusions and judge unobjectivly, for me personally i really dont see what is wrong here why they make him out to be a bad guy i dont understand this, i find him bringing up an interesting debatable viewpoint (in what context a newsource should be able to print possibly offensive language), (HES NOT CALLING ANYONE A FAGOT) WOOPS I JUST SAID FAGGOT , THIS MUST MEAN I HATE GAYS, uuggh wake up like i said he brings up an interesting debatable viewpoint and i happen to agree with him (key word debatable – but people would rather jump to insults and personal attacks rather and than refute his views with intelligent counterarguments) its like they find a computer glitch then out of frustration bash it to pieces instead of troubleshoot a solution that is not how you convince someone of your views, not that you cant be passionate, just be intelligent and passionate or whatever ,anyway thats all
February 7th, 2007 at 6:52 pmWhat’s funny, is I just see a bunch of liberals dissing somebody that actually says outloud what most people are thinking.
February 11th, 2007 at 1:11 pmI highly doubt ANY of you have even bothered to listen/watch his programs, or you’d be singing different tunes.
#97 – typifies the left. Your parents must be proud…..
These blogs are neat….as I didn’t realize there was such loathful hatred out there for people that didn’t believe as you leftys do.
You’d rather put your neighbors behind razor fences, because they believe in God, their country, and the importance of innocent life, and the sanctity of marriage, instead of a hate-filled muslim that is killing innocent men/women/children so they can get some virgins. I bet many of you silently cheer, whenever wulf tells you how many soldiers are killed, don’t you.
Good thing Muslims wear turbins……so we can tell the two of you apart.
There used to be a play yard rhyme that went like “sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt meâ€. I guess we’ve gone past that. The left attempts to define thought by directing which words are appropriate for use. Thus out of a wide range of slag words for homosexuals, they decide gay is the “sensitive†and correct word and castigate everyone else for the terms queer or faggot. That is not the only case, there was the response to the use of the word niggardly as it related to a budget matter, but the left wing community went wild on the white man who made the statement.
February 17th, 2007 at 7:38 pmOn the other hand, the liberals usually don’t have a problem with the word cracker. This is the same liberal community that has presided over an education establishment that has seen a steady decline in SAT scores. Go figure. “Freedom of speech as long as you say it my way.â€
[...] Beck said tonight that his numerous inflammatory comments aren’t due to his right-wing point of view, but are merely a sign that he is “not perfect” and “struggl[ing] to find the answers to the issues that we face on my own.” Some lowlights from Beck’s “struggle”: The anti-gay slur “faggot” is nothing more than “a naughty name.” [1/23/07] [...]
