Bush said: “Free people are not drawn to violent and malignant ideologies — and most will choose a better way when they are given a chance. So we advance our own security interests by helping moderates, reformers, and brave voices for democracy.”
FACT — RICE AVOIDED PUSHING DEMOCRACY IN MIDDLE EAST TRIP: On a recent trip to the Middle East, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice failed to mention Egypt’s poor human rights record. “It was clear that the United States — facing chaos in Iraq, rising Iranian influence and the destabilizing Israeli-Palestinian conflict — had decided that stability, not democracy, was its priority, Egyptian political commentators, political aides and human rights advocates said.” [NYTimes, 1/16/07]
Commerce with all nations, alliance with none, should be our motto.

I’m feeling drawn to violence.
January 23rd, 2007 at 9:44 pmBush does not promote democracy overseas, because he undermines it in America!
January 23rd, 2007 at 9:46 pmAs usual, he must drone on and on about 9/11 and the terrorists. Yea, I wonder why people hate our “freedom”. Could it have anything to do with our foreign policy? He is still hung up on success. Consequences grievous and far reaching. Oh no!!! Why would the whole region be drawn into the conflict? Because we have an administration of zealots and deny-ers.
January 23rd, 2007 at 9:46 pmOddly enough, TP seems to have skipped over the part of Bush’s speech where he (yet again) proposed a massive amnesty.

January 23rd, 2007 at 9:54 pmlet me know if anyone savvy with the vids can post that- it was so telling of his disdain for Congress. AUnless, maybe, he had a piece of Cheney’s ass stuck in his teeth.

January 23rd, 2007 at 10:50 pmFunny this comes right on the heels of the historic Roe v Wade decision, and the only thing that popped into my head was the radical fundamentalists, who are most certainly freely publishing the names and addresses of doctors who provide legal family planning and termination services to women across the country, and also advocating violence against them. I hardly think freedom is that magic bullet against “violent and malignant ideologies” but rather a lot of education and a good dose of discipline. Both of which are severely lacking in our homes, schools, churches, and government.
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:11 pmThe first thing that popped into my head at this statement is the recent anniversary of Roe v Wade, and the radical fundamentalists who post the names and addresses of doctors and providers of legal family planning as well as termination services, and also advocate violence against them. Certainly, these people are free; and they clearly subscribe to “violent and malignant” interpretations of christian principles. Ah well. it is hardly the case that freedom, in any sense, relieves people of these tendencies, as there always will be a radical few. I tend to prefer re-education and a hefty amount of discipline.
