Bush said: “It is in our vital interest to diversify America’s energy supply — and the way forward is through technology.”
FACT — BUSH PROMISED TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES LAST YEAR, DIDN’T DELIVER: At last year’s State of the Union, President Bush said the “best way to break this addiction [to oil] is through technology.” Yet his 2007 budget actually proposed to spend less on energy efficiency, conservation, and renewable energy resources in inflation-adjusted dollars than was appropriated in fiscal year 2001 — $1.176 billion in nominal dollars in both 2001 and 2007. [State of the Union, 1/31/06; President's Budget, FY 2007]
FACT — EMPHASIS ON TECHNOLOGY IS STANDARD RIGHT-WING TALKING POINT: Influential conservative political consultant and wordsmith Frank Luntz has advised politicians to point to the promise of technology in order to delay implementation of mandatory cuts in global warming pollution. “We need to emphasize how voluntary innovation and experimentation are preferable to bureaucratic or international intervention and regulation,” Luntz advises. [Luntz Environment Memo]
Just like he did last time, he’ll retract this comment and apologize with bigger tax cuts for the Big Oil Gluttons.
January 23rd, 2007 at 9:33 pmIt’s hard to deliver anything when you’re not even trying.
January 23rd, 2007 at 9:34 pmBush belongs to the Big Oil companies, so his promising to pursue alternative energy is phony on its face, and Iraq is all about OIL!
January 23rd, 2007 at 9:34 pmYou mean Bush was full of shite?
January 23rd, 2007 at 9:36 pmYup.
January 23rd, 2007 at 9:43 pmAlternative energy is basically just a pipe dream. We need more nuclear power.
January 23rd, 2007 at 10:36 pmDid anyone notice cheney trying not to laugh out loud during this part of the the talking monkey’s speech? it was the best part of the SOTU.
January 23rd, 2007 at 10:56 pmIf ever there is a full listing of the criminals responsible for the mess the US is in, Frank Luntz should be near the top. A long-standing member of the brain trust behind the conservative “revolution”, he along with Paul Weyrich, Richard Vigurie, and WIlliam Simon laid the groundwork for the criminal enterprise that is todays Republican party.

Horse puckey. When people decry alternative energy, the first thing they speak of is high cost, low return. Nuclear power plants can’t function without massive public subsidy, they never recoup their construction costs, and they create environmental problems lasting for aeons, which must surely make the Bush administration supportive of them for spite if for no other reason. What we need first is conservation. Then we need to offer the same subsidies to alternative energy programs and development that we currently offer to the coal and oil companies that are killing us for profit.
January 23rd, 2007 at 11:18 pmYou’re nuts. Where are your numbers?

In other words, the right-wing spends a lot of time talking about toys, instead of boring stuff like laws and regulation. I guess we can figure out who their target audience is…

I stand temporarily corrected, based on a report from the World Nuclear Asscciation. I will continue researching.
January 24th, 2007 at 12:16 amQuestion: do you know who is the biggest exporter of oil to the U.S. of A.? Do you know that from the moment there was a recent change in party leadership in the government of that country, numerous private discussions occured between said newly elected leader and President Bush to formulate a plan to raise productivity of this number one exporter up to 5 millions barrels a day? Do you now know what President Bush means by “less dependent on foreign oil”?
(Hint: the country who is the biggest exporter of oil to the U.S. of A. also happens to be the number one trading partner of the U.S. of A.. Have you figured it out, yet?)
January 24th, 2007 at 9:57 amWhile conservatives tout new technology, liberals are busy inventing and developing it.
Also, those who say it cannot be done should never interrupt those who are doing it.
January 24th, 2007 at 12:03 pmSpeaking of alternative fuels, did anybody see the recent MIT report about the viability of large scale geothermal power? sounds interesting.
