Bush’s SOTU Leaves Social Conservatives ‘Lifeless,’ ‘Disappointed,’ ‘Shaking Their Heads’

Social conservatives who have been longtime loyalists of President Bush are speaking out in anger about the president’s silence on divisive right-wing issues. Cultural conservatives who have become accustomed to hearing Bush cater rhetorically to their wishes found “little to cheer” in his speech Tuesday night. Some examples below:

In a video address entitled, “A Lifeless State of the Union,” President Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council said, “I believe the president failed to challenge the new majority to advance core family and cultural issues. What will become of the culture of life, the defense of marriage and permanent family-friendly tax policies?” [FRC, 1/24/07]

I think the president left a lot of conservatives shaking their heads” by avoiding the issues atop their agenda, said Bill Lauderback, executive vice president at the American Conservative Union. [WSJ, 1/25/07]

We’re disappointed that he didn’t mention cultural issues at all,” said Rich Lowry, editor of National Review magazine and a summit host. “Everyone realizes that this is a product of his diminished circumstances.” [AP, 1/24/07]

The Wall Street Journal reports the administration has now been forced to defend itself against criticism from the right. “Yesterday morning, the weekly meeting of conservatives that is convened by antitax activist Grover Norquist, a White House ally, was marked by ‘tense exchanges‘ with administration press secretary Tony Snow.”

  1. ForTruth says:

The 30 percenters still support him.

  2. kindness says:

How many times did conservatives tell liberals to win elections and then come back with their suggestions.

Ain’t so pretty sittin’ on that side of the fence, eh?

  3. Ranger Jay says:

What will become of the culture of life, the defense of marriage and permanent family-friendly tax policies?

Culture of life? Defense of marriage? Why do they insist on masking their true agenda?

Permanent family-friendly tax cuts? The tax cuts haven’t helped my family, because we don’t make enough money to make it across the “kick in” point. Why doesn’t he just come out and say, “permanent wealthy- and corporation-friendly tax cuts?”

It’s about time that these people realize that it is they who are in the minority in this country. They can preach all they want, as long as they do it in their own churches, and not in my face.

  4. Doktor Texas says:

Welcome to the rest of us who have been lied to and sh$t on by these traitors for six years, not counting Poppy and Raygun. Need some coffee?

  5. Raven says:

    Sheer poetry!:
“Everyone realizes that this is a product of his diminished circumstances…”
If he dims any further, he’ll spend the afterlife just inside an event horizon………….

  7. The Other National Anthem says:

These “social conservative” people who so love their “family values” sure don’t do a lot of speaking out against our prison systems, the robbing of the poor by the rich, and the growing War in Iraq.
These people never meant much in elections anyway. Karl Rove was proven wrong.

  8. lw says:

What kind of country will it be if our government doesn’t keep control over women’s reproductive health care, who marries whom, and who is kept alive artificially? As our dear president once said, “There’s such a thing as too much freedom.”

  9. Tim O says:

Awwwwwwww! Let’s have a pity party! Waaaaaaa!

  10. Randy Nason says:

Oh, come on, right-wing enthusiasts. I think that the President did a great and wonderful job- putting the screws to everyone and everything. He has screwed the American people and the American constitution, screwed the Middle East and the people of all countries in that part of the world, screwed the economy, from which we will never recover, and screwed his own legacy. The latter is the only thing that I applaud wholeheartedly and with no reservation, whatsoever. It is with little solace that I mention it took five and a half years for people of both parties to come to thier senses. I guess that after hitting yourself over the head for so long, it feels so good when you stop.

  11. Bruce Gorton says:

To be honest: These guys have gotten six years worth of having things there way. Not a lot got done, and what did get done – didn’t turn out too well.

That said, now that the 28 percenters are getting a bit miffed, is there going to be an impeachment?

  12. Publicus says:

So there WAS something good about the President’s speech.

BTW, did you hear about the recent convictions in the presidential election fraud of 2004?

  13. Liberal in New Mexico says:

“I just think that’s hogwash. Frankly, you’re out of line, with that one”.
Now, excuse me. I’ve got to go squeal like a pig. Weee… weee…

  14. SouthWest Bob says:

What will become of the culture of life, the defense of marriage and permanent family-friendly tax policies?”

Hey, these have been and remain fringe issues for 70% of Americans. Your joy ride is over! This spineless president now realizes that backing your agenda has done nothing for him and continued support of your narrow minded view of life will not help make his legacy.

  15. Doktor Texas says:

Its pretty bad when the American Taliban can’t even count on Ayatolla Bush and Mullah Cheney to carry their water. Come to where the flavor is…join us…the majority of America in our quest for regime change.

  16. RUCerious says:

W should get ahold of some killer BC bud and blow some joint rings around their anointed heads. That’d piss em off.

  18. ggibson says:

Read it over and over again Republicans… and remember the president represents the WHOLE of America………..

  19. Blackacre says:

The FRC link is pretty funny. They noted that Bush had not mentioned abstinence in the SOTU. What an outrage!

  20. Liberal in New Mexico says:

Hey, has anyone seen The Dixie Chicks, lately? No- I didn’t think so. Sorry right-wing, I just can’t bring myself to feel any sympathy. I have enough “crow” on my plate to last my lifetime. I’m not a dixie chicken or a spring chicken, either. This administration is like a bad marriage and has taken the last six years of my life. I want a f- divorce!

  21. Liberty Lover says:

Frankly, I think it is well past time that the religious right conservatives realize that Bush was just using you and your rhetoric to win elections. They never had any intention of getting the things that you believe in passed. They Used you. Just like they are using the rest of us to accomplish their real agenda: to earn as much money for their cronies as possible without giving back to the community of people called Americans.

They are false prophets (for profits) and you have been taken.

  22. ForTruth says:

    Poor Daryll,

He really had hope for that last 6 years, and he now finds out he was pimped for his vote. Bummer.

The religious right has been duped and taken for a ride. They were used by Rove to get votes. Rove actually laughs at you.

  23. Raven says:

    Dear Neo-Whiners

    I feel your pain.

    Sincerely,
    Raven

P.S. My daily low-dose aspirin tablet aleviates it quickly.

  24. klyde says:

#21 what are you talking about? Dixie Chicks cd went double platinum. I don’t know how the rest of the tour went but they sold out in NYC this summer. Suck it bush cultist!

    Snip

A part of me admires people like perkins for their tenacity and message discipline. They know their demi-god is done but they are letteing the rest of the rethug establishment know that if they want their votes the culture of life, the defense of marriage and permanent family-friendly tax policies better be on the table.

Look at how he phrased his demands. These guys learned thier lessons from frank luntz well and they never stray from the proper framing.

I wish progressives had that kind of message discipline.

  25. the fly-man says:

The problem with the Social Theocrats is their way is the hi-way. You better kiss their asses cause if you don’t they’re not going to support you. They’ll just sit at home and wait, and wait and wait and wait, just like abstinence, Wait all you want while the world enjoys itself and then has you subsidize it. Sad, so sad. When will they just get their own party and submit their OWN candidates instead of acting like the old stuffy aunt who has the wheel of the family car day on Sunday? Co-opting a political movement just fosters pandering and resentment.

  26. PoliticalCritic says:

Bush’s speech catered to the left, so it’s no surprise that even more conservatives are abandoning him. He may get some support from Congressional Dems, but the Democratic public will never come back around.

  27. cynical ex-hippie says:

Did they think he was going to buy into their mythology agenda when he’s not up for re-election?

  28. Krazny says:

The republicans have nothing to gain, and much to lose by pushing through this agenda. With gay marriage, lower taxes, and the culture of life ™, they can manipulate Daryll and those like him. Why bother having to come up with new stuff, when you can recycle the same old stuff?

    Think about it Daryll

  29. the fly-man says:

Kylde is dead on. My question how can Tony Perkins, James Dobson, etal, make public comments as the leaders of religious organizations, specifically address policy and then say that the views just expressed are not that of their organizations and just their own? So are they lying to their constituencies about other convictions they may hold? How do they deserve a tax exemption?

  30. GodfryDaniel says:

“We’re disappointed that he didn’t mention cultural issues at all,”

The term “culture” is not in the Bush vocabulary.

  31. ForTruth says:

Maybe all the “Christians” will go crawl back under the rocks they came out from. The party is over. Time for sensible people (70% of 300 million) to supervise the play pen now.

  32. Liberal in New Mexico says:

#25- If you had bothered to really read what I wrote, you might have possibly deciphered my affinity for the Chicks and my unabashed disgust for the neos. I was simply reminiscing how ugly and horrible the public mass was to them back when patriotism was measured in centimeters and not in vast lengths of verbiage, as it is now.

  33. ggibson says:

  34. ForTruth says:

    Daryll,

Bush has had six years to pass your agenda, how come nothing has changed?

  35. ForTruth says:

    But Gerald,

That guy was trying to save little babies, he was about the culture of life, he didn’t mean to kill the Dr. He’s a dear soul.

    /sarcasm

  36. Karim says:

In all honesty, the scumbags at the Family Research Council and Focus on the Family have already done enough damage to this country. I am actually glad that Bush snubbed them this year.

  37. Angry One says:

No red meat for Red Staters.

Just one of the “Top 10 State of the Union Highlights.”

  38. Gregor Samsa says:

Republicans have finally realised they were conned. They are not exactly quick in the uptake.

It took them 6 years of being bashed behind their backs, their issues ignored and tossed aside, two disastrous occupations, an out-of-proportion deficit, the erosion of the law and the constitution, the abandonment of New Orleans to its fate, and more for these halfwits to open their eyes and start wondering if they’ve been had.

They’re like a young, naive woman who has been used for sex. Now these Bush supporters are wondering “will you call me tomorrow?”. Yes, Bush cultists, it hurts -after all, you were screwed by an elephant. And you won’t even get flowers for your favors.

I feel so tempted to throw back at them all the nasty, vile epithets they spewed all these years; remember them? Anyone who criticized the Dear (mis)Leader was a traitor, a terrorist lover, and unAmerican. Any bad word about the (mis)Leader’s preformance was met with more insults and accusations of “playing into the hands of the terrorists” and “undermining the troops’ morale”.

What say you now, Bush cultists? (Whatever your answer, I doubt I will feel sorry for you: Your support for all these misguided policies have cost the world dearly.)

  39. Randy Nason says:

I guess a lot of people are shaking thier heads over what Bush DIDN’T have to say. Besides the usual rehash of items from past years that have never been delivered, there was no mention of the hurricane Katrina relief effort. And as for scientific research, I guess we need an administrator who, at the very least, is MILDLY curious.

  40. War4Sale says:

You’ve been used like an old roll of toilet paper AGAIN, Fundies!

Aren’t you used to it by now?

  41. Marie says:

It’s taken them THIS LONG to think that Bush would turn on them if he desired? It’s taken them THIS LONG to realize that Bush&Co don’t care about anyone but Bush&Co?

  42. RUCerious says:

Poor Dick and George. Just can’t freakin please anybody any more.

As if they gave one rat’s rectum.

  43. Kate Henry says:

“What will become of the culture of life, the defense of marriage and permanent family-friendly tax policies?”

Oh, you mean family-friendly tax policies like the one’s the Republics and the Bushies have been pushing? They are family-friendly if you are a family making over $200,000 a year.

  44. bobs your uncle says:

Can we finally declare an end to the values voters’ 15 minutes of fame? I’ve heard quite enough about that tale wagging that dog!!

  45. bobs your uncle says:

There really is nothing like a social conservative whose sense of entitlement has been frustrated.

  46. dixie blood says:

In the context of Repugnican politics “Social conservatives” is polite-speak for Right-wing Christianists.

The CORPORATE FACISTS that run the Rupugnican PARTY and most of this government and MSM PLAYED THESE IDIOTS LIKE A CHEAP VIOLIN!

What a bunch of JESUS LOSERS!!!!

  47. muckdog says:

The Democrats have rejected all of Bush’s ideas, including his call for “energy independence” and reducing oil consumption by 20% over the next 10 years. Since the Dems have zero plans for anything else, that means we’ll keep burning more oil! Importing more oil! Sending more troops to the Middle East to die for oil! Creating more and more CO2! If you love global warming, you love the Democrats! Blocking new clean nuclear plants. Creating more coal burning plants. And increasing America’s reliance on foreign energy.

    Thanks, Democrats!

  48. Reginald Yoyodyne says:

Yessss. Because cultural values rillllllly need to be enshrined in law. That’s what freedom is all about, apparently.

  49. Reginald Yoyodyne says:

The culture of life and its glorious fulfillment in the killing of many Iraqi people — not to mention U. S. soldiers.

Is the culture of life the culture of creating more soldier babies?

  50. Jim says:

The beginning (I hope) of the end of the Neo-Consevatives and thier wingbat theiores (sp?) That people like these have held sway over our Great Country for the last 6 years will be something that historians will puzzle over for a long time to come.

  51. notimpressedwiththeUS says:

W should get ahold of some killer BC bud and blow some joint rings around their anointed heads. That’d piss em off.

    Comment by RUCerious

    :>D!! Sure would !!!!! :>D

  52. Willy says:

I agree, what happened to the hypocrisy of talking about the “right to life” while killing hundreds of thousands of Iraqis? What happened to the hypocrisy of the blatant hatred of gays and lesbians while promoting “family values”? What happened to the hypocrisy of talking about being a “good Christian” while promoting war, torture and lying to everyone about everything?

  53. Jason M. Hendler says:

Keep wishing – I found his message and seemingly good will to and from Pelosi as a good sign. Moreover, Pelosi’s applause for supporting our troops, whether backed by real action remains to be seen, as at least an admission that she cannot afford to be caught being unpatriotic.

  54. mitiori says:

The VP’s daughter is now a pregnant lesbian GOP, what did they expect?!

  55. yikes says:

The religious right are always whining that they’re not getting enough attention – like whiny little children. Bush was going to get you that federal anti gay marriage amendment and what did you get? Nothing. All these years of “pro-life” promises and what have you got? Nothing.

But you’ll still go and vote for your GOP masters again and again like good little sheep…chronically stupid, just the way the GOP loves the religious right.

  56. lgreene says:

Why the hell is Grover Norquist sitting in the front row of a meeting with Tony Snow? Didn’t the Abramoff scandal pretty much indict him as a crook and a liar? When is that a**hole going to jail?

  57. dlet says:

Nohing really new there. Conservatives are typically lifeless as it is.

  58. big papa says:

    I’ll… (grudginglymind you)…

…attempt to defend Bushiva on this one…

    …Those conned’self-servative sh*t-fer-braindead sons of pigs ba*ls…

…were already “Lifeless, disappointing, head rattlers”…

…that’s why they voted for that corksucker Bush in the first place!
