Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) today said that “the existence of the Congressional Black Caucus and other race-based groups of lawmakers amount to segregation and should be abolished.” He recently received attention for calling Miami “as bad as any ghetto in any Third World country.”

I say we abolish Tom Tancredo.
January 25th, 2007 at 8:32 pmDoes this a$$hat have his robes hand made by David Duke too?
January 25th, 2007 at 8:32 pmSheesh
Tom needs to learn to edit himself.
January 25th, 2007 at 8:36 pmCould this have possibly anything to do with the fact that the Congressional Black Caucus has been one of the most vociferous critics of the Bush administration, especially regarding the war/occupation in Iraq?
January 25th, 2007 at 8:37 pmTancredo is clueless. This guy comes from a party that has excluded blacks for years. He comes from a party that excluded Democrats from committee meetings by locking the doors of the committee rooms, by changing the meeting place of the committees and by lying about where it would be held. Now that the black caucus is gaining power and is being heard he wants it abolished. It ain’t a joke anymore is it Tom?
January 25th, 2007 at 8:38 pmWhat if someone tried to create the Congressional Irish Caucus?

January 25th, 2007 at 8:47 pmI’m pretty sure there already is an Irish caucus.
January 25th, 2007 at 8:47 pmAs long as the phrase ‘the first black/woman/latino/bugeyed green monster’ is the first phrase out of someone’s mouth when remarking on achievement then bigots like Tancredo should be confronted with their bigotry.

January 25th, 2007 at 8:57 pmIf the Irish want to create a caucus and take a stand against the war in Iraq I have no problem with that. In fact Ireland have taken stands against the war and against rendition.
If Tancredo keeps it up, the voters of Colorado will be very happy that they are one of the 18 states that allow recall.

January 25th, 2007 at 9:01 pmI reject that premise.
Instead of a “colorblind society” I propose a “colorfull society;” one which recognizes and celebrates the differences each contributes to the whole.
January 25th, 2007 at 9:02 pm“Tancredo is chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus…”
Now why didn’t they have that Caucus a couple of hundred years ago and such down all that immigration of slaves back then? You want to complain about a “guest worker” program???
January 25th, 2007 at 9:04 pmWhat I would like to see is Tancredo’s voting record. I’d like to see how “colorblind” he really is.
January 25th, 2007 at 9:05 pmBrisaedh na Faire,
Democracy Now had a great show on immigration today. I included a small portion. It really is a shocking report.
http://www.democracynow.org/ article.pl?sid=07/ 01/ 25/ 153210
Targeted: Homeland Security and the Business of Immigration
DEEPA FERNANDES: Yeah. It was not anything I set out to investigate or discover, but it just kept coming up, when the question for me was, “Who is writing our immigration policy?†We know that it’s — on the immigrant advocate community side, we know that it’s very harsh. Who’s actually writing this? Where does it come from? So starting to actually trace literally the authors, who’s putting pen to paper, and where are those ideas coming from? And, Juan, when you start to trace that back, it was pretty shocking that it wasn’t that hard to make the links to what I call, in kind of inverted commas, anti-immigration groups, like FAIR, which has a reputation of being a balanced kind of just “we’re looking out for the environment†—
JUAN GONZALEZ: And FAIR is? Because there’s obviously another FAIR.
DEEPA FERNANDES: Not Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting, no. This is the Federation of Americans for Immigration Reform. And it was started by an ophthalmologist called John Tanton, and to trace John Tanton, it was chilling. And to see just how he started a whole network of really Astroturf groups, but how his connections are very, very easily made to white supremacist groups, even though he has a great cover of simply being anti-immigration, but he actually authored a memo that was discovered two decades ago that, you know, kind of came and went.

January 25th, 2007 at 9:11 pmThis country is being overrun with little macaccas every where you look. Now Ellison and Obama are trying to push Islam onto the masses.
Then you have the blacks in NewOL complaining about no a/c and a disruption in their govt subsidy checks.
They gays and lesbians are wandering the streets lokking for a sponsor.
And you wonder why Tancredo wants to abolish the congressional black caucus. Which is a good thing.
Bush only met with this ” non entity ” what was it once, in his tenure so far?
Why would the consummate republican spendthrift, Tom Tancredo, want to throw any more of the taxpayers hard earned money towards this non effective congressional inner body?
Listen to Tom. He is very smart. This whole congressional black caucus is a gross waste of taxpayer expenditures.

>I hear crickets in the background of your ” march ”
There are probably 1,000,000 dissidents in this country sure, but finding only ONE with balls enough to march will be quite a different story.
Democrats are inherently weak. They are Charlatan in their very nature. After all look at the evidence. They want to kill unborns to make sure the living never die. That is about as backwards as it gets folks.
Thats why they are the party of ” cut and run ” ; on their troops, on their families, and on their constituents.
I will debate a democrat any day of the week, but I would NEVER be personally seen with one or ” hang out ” with one..

Some of these trolls actually do provide some entertainment value, and I get to learn something because a few are just begging to be publicly humiliated -like michael.
For instance, tonight I learnt there is a French Caucus, a Croatian Caucus, a Spanish Caucus, a Serbian Caucus, and even a Danish Caucus -those beat the Irish and the rest in whiteness…
Check the list of Caucuses in the Congressional Organisations web page.
January 26th, 2007 at 12:11 amDanish Caucus? How many members of Congress in that? 3 or 4? I am part Danish lol.

January 26th, 2007 at 12:30 am“Michael what is your, not the sparkle box, definition of a ‘liberal’?”
I had to go back to the beginning of this thread to remember what the subject was so it’s about Tancredo’s objection to a racist black caucus in our Congress. You liberals object! Why? They’re anti white! If you open your eyes you can see this in their agenda. Without knowing your race I would guess you are a white liberal full of racial GUILT! Anything constructive said about our minority friends is considered RACIST! Tancredo is against reverse discrimination, obviously, you’re not!

January 26th, 2007 at 2:11 amFrom the CBC Foundation site:
This new reality requires the CBCF to expand on its current efforts and undertake new global initiatives that will allow African Americans to forge alliances and develop opportunities that will strengthen the competitiveness of African Americans in the global economy. Projects under CBCF’s African Globalism initiative will include efforts to promote international business opportunities for African American entrepreneurs, to create educational and cultural exchanges among young people, and to facilitate policy dialogue among legislators, policy professionals, organizational leaders, and advocates for the express purpose of promoting racial inclusion and economic prosperity for all.
I think Michael has a different definition of racist: he seem to think a racist is someone who cares for others of their own race, not someone who hates other races — at least that is the only conclusion one could reasonably draw from someone who thinks that an organization dedicated “to facilitate policy dialogue among legislators, policy professionals, organizational leaders, and advocates for the express purpose of promoting racial inclusion and economic prosperity for all” is a racist organization.
January 26th, 2007 at 2:17 amNext thing they`ll be having a Muslim Congressional Caucus
( which silently ushers the religion of ISLAM into our government) .
This is a national security threat in the highest regard.
And the reason it is a national security threat is that our Constitution GUARANTEES freedom of religion AND seperation of church and state.
Islam guarantees freedom of one religion ( Islam )
Islam guarantees non seperation of church and state ( Sharia Law)
Tancredo is right. It is better to abolish all race caucuses before the Islamists take over our country.
It could slowly happen. Don`t ever say ” Never in America ”

January 26th, 2007 at 9:01 amGiven the existence of so many race-based Congressional Caucuses, I have to wonder why Rep Tancredo chose to single out the Black Caucus by specifically mentioning it.
I can’t imagine why he would single out the Black Caucus….
How about this:
As a white liberal running in a majority African American district, Tennessee Democrat Stephen I. Cohen made a novel pledge on the campaign trail last year: If elected, he would seek to become the first white member of the Congressional Black Caucus.
Now that he’s a freshman in Congress, Cohen has changed his plans. He said he has dropped his bid after several current and former caucus members made it clear to him that whites need not apply.
“I think they’re real happy I’m not going to join,” said Cohen, who succeeded Rep. Harold Ford, D-Tenn., in the Memphis district. “It’s their caucus and they do things their way. You don’t force your way in. You need to be invited.”
How racist. Tancredo I mean. I think.

We gotta do something about it!’, the three-term congressman-elect declared, referring to the document he hopes someday to swear to preserve and protect. Supreme Court President-designee Bush later contacted the congressman-elect with an offer to form a study group so that the two of them might prepare for the exam together.”
January 26th, 2007 at 9:16 amAs Americans, we have the freedom to group ourselves in any way we see fit. It’s a right that is guaranteed by the first amendment.
Except in schools. And in business. And higher education. And as long as you don’t exclude gays. Or minorities. Or women. Or poor people. Or immigrants. But Christians are OK to exclude–they’re too dumb to do anything anyway.
January 26th, 2007 at 9:27 amSome people are born naturally stupid, dense, slow
And then others, like Tancredo, Michael & Joanie, take stupidity to dingy, new depths
That’s what’s great about this country, as Tancredo, M & J show, one can be as blithering of an idiot as possible and suffer no government sanctions against it
The right to be stupid, no doubt the privelege most exercised enthusiastically by willfully ignorant trolls/quislings/lackeys AKA the rapidly dwindling number of overly-naive, starry-eyed, W Believers

January 26th, 2007 at 9:47 amRob,
I nominate you for the “troll of the day” award in the “lamest strawman” category. Alas, you will probably have stiff competition.
January 26th, 2007 at 10:04 amTancredo and his cohorts are soon to go the way of the fossilized dinosaur. No one wants to hear that overly conservative crap any more. I have more faith in the young people today than that. People are not willing to hate gays, blacks, or ANY minority on blind faith and instruction from fear-mongering sadists like Tancredo. If the past six years have taught us anything, it is that.
January 26th, 2007 at 11:24 amRob,
I nominate you for the “troll of the day†award in the “lamest strawman†category. Alas, you will probably have stiff competition.
Sweet
I’m assuming that by “strawman” you mean pointing out the fact that the CBC specifically denied someone admission into their organization based solely on the color of his skin even though he represented a majority black district and that fact was conveniently left out of this discourse. Even to the point that posters here were left wondering why Tancredo would specifically single out the CBC. I wonder. Providing half the story=very progressive.
January 26th, 2007 at 12:31 pmThe bigots are the members of the Black Caucus. And any other race based select group. Laws are in place to protect and serve the public against race issues. There are prejudices, and you have legal recourse. Those who hold onto these old ideas stereotype themselves and have themselves to blame for the racism. Segregation no matter who does it…. is wrong.
January 26th, 2007 at 12:37 pmJust one more thing… I see that those against the Tom Tancredo’s embrace segregation and discrimination…. you close your eyes you could see the white sheets…. just on a new group.
January 26th, 2007 at 12:44 pmTom Tancredo is a dangerous right wing extremist in my opinion. Remember that he told Sean Hannity that that he would be in favor of nuking Mecca in some circumstances. (Reported on Fox News.com on Monday, July 18, 2005 at the following link: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,162795,00.html).These circumstances would include a nuclear attack by “Muslim fundamentalist terroristsâ€. Of course when Cheney, Libby et al. destroyed Valerie Plame’s Brewster Jennings network they materially increased the chances of such weapons falling into the hands of dangerous people, including the above named terrorists.
January 26th, 2007 at 12:50 pmEven to the point that posters here were left wondering why Tancredo would specifically single out the CBC.

I quickly googled your story about Cohen being denied membership in the CBC. The source is politico.com and nobody else has confirmed it. All the other hits i got (basically blogs) repeat the story without checking into it.
One source, no confirmation. I sense a rumor and am skeptical.
January 26th, 2007 at 12:59 pmEven if, and I say if this were a rumor… which was widely reported on the networks… mostly as a bash on Tancredo, it is a topic worth understanding. Why is it okay to discriminate? You could make the argument that you can join any group you want to … but the point is that if you are not allowed to join… and it is for race…. it is against the law… ROB Your Right….. you can discriminate against only two groups, whites and Christians…. go figure..

It may be that politico made up the story entirely. This would be pretty serious since they have quotes from Cohen himself, a quote from a member of the CBC himself discussing Cohen’s rejection, as well as another Rep. who tried to join the CBC in a similar situation and was denied membership because “the issue [was] that I was white,” but it seems that the last quote may not have been in relation to this specific instance, but rather his own experience.
Unless politico did entirely fabricate the story (which I obviously can’t rule out), who else do you need confirmation from besides Cohen himself and a member of the organization that rejected him?
January 26th, 2007 at 1:45 pmFurther, Re the post above, why is TP linking to such an unreliable source (politico) regarding the post on the 70 Senator’s Profiles in Courage several posts ahead of this?

I don’t know -you may want to ask them.
And I didn’t say politico.com was “unreliable”. I said it is the only source reporting the story. Without a confirmation from another source, I think their scoop is a rumor.
January 26th, 2007 at 2:16 pm“Segregation is the adultery of an illicit intercourse between injustice and immorality.”
-Martin Luther King, Jr.
I guess MLK was full of crap too, huh? Besides, didn’t he also say,
“If we are to go forward, we must go back and rediscover those precious values - that all reality hinges on moral foundations and that all reality has spiritual control.”
-Martin Luther King, Jr.
My God! Martin Luther King Jr. was a conservative!!!!
January 26th, 2007 at 4:12 pmWithout admitting party affiliation, I would love to remove the personal name calling and insults from this subject. Attcking the messenger or commentator is simple fallacy. The basics are: 1. The CBC filters its “applicants” out by using race as the primary yardstick, party affiliation as an equal second. 2. The Civil Rights Act prohibits employers, schools, govenment agencies, et cetera from using a number of aspects as determinants, most specifically race. Private empoyers and businesses and organizations are prohibited (as they should be) from discriminating against someone based upon race. All incidences of such discrimination are subject to both pulic censure and enormous litigation (as they should be to a point). 3. The CBC uses race as its primary litmus test for entrace. 4. Race as a requirement is immoral and illegal in almost every instance.
Forget about Tancredo’s race or affiliation and ask the question: If the CBC can use race as a requirement for admittance, why can they subvert the rules that the rest of our country is compelled to abide by? Why do we feel the need to keep such an organization in such a prominent position if the message is that Congressional Black Democrats do not have to obey the common decency of inclusion? Racism is wrong. Allowing one group to drive an idealogue division through one of the most important institutions in America (the US Congress) is simply reprehensible. Dr. King, as cliche as it sounds, would only have wanted an equal footing and a chance to speak. He did not support the tipping of scales against the white community. When did equality and accountability stop representing the dream of black Americans? Before commenting on whether or not I am the enemy, consider how different the response would be if you knew I was a black registered Democrat. What if I were a conservative white? The issue is the important part, please sift through the canned responses and look at the logic and reality of this situation. God Bless

Excellently written piece!
February 1st, 2007 at 11:02 amI long ago suggest the black caucus be abolished. Why can’t you people just be Americans, and congresspersons? You are the ones who want to separate yourselves from the mainstream. You are mostly a group detached from the mainstream of American society, people who could not get elected dogcathcer outside specially designed districts where the majority of people think O.J. didn’t do it, or don’t care that the did, and that welfare is an occupation.
These “congressmen” are not answerable to the American people, just the hyphen-Americans! These are people who give a corrupt thief, William Jefferson, a standing ovation. What do we need to know about this caucus? John Conyers continues to whine about reparations, while he uses his staff for babysitters. Reparations? What do you people think the black caucus is, if not reparations?
T. Moschetti
February 2nd, 2007 at 2:16 pmI believe that the black caucus should be abolished. It is racist. It is tribal.
February 2nd, 2007 at 9:55 pmWhen we classify people according to race it is a form of lower thinking.
We should treat people as individuals not with a tribal mentality.
It only creates more resentments and people fear eachother and not love eachother for who they are as individuals.
The black caucus should be abolished, as well as any other race based caucus. If there was a white caucus, people would be screaming about how it is racist. Whay should any other race/minority be treated any different. If we are all truely about trying to become color blind, why should we have any groups, especially in our governent, built based on race?
February 7th, 2007 at 9:46 pmThe Congressional Black Caucus, Congressional hispanic Caucus and Congressional Asian Pacific Islander Caucus will be necessary as long as 85% of the 535 congressional seats are overwhelingly controlled by white males.
Unfortunately some of those white males are clueless to the fact that this is NOT 1907 or 1807. Tancreepo and his ilk need to join the rest of us in the 21st century.
Until this country realizes that we are STILL 142 years later dealing with the toxic waste legacy of slavery and racial prejudiice in this country, all those caucuses will be necessary.
February 8th, 2007 at 12:18 pmFor the clueless bigots, Barack Obama is a member of Trinity United Church of Christ and Keith Ellison is a Sunni Muslim
Islam does not equal terrorism anymore than Republican and conservative equals to moral and Christian
February 8th, 2007 at 12:26 pmSome of you ask the question why we African-Americans can’t be ‘just Americans?’
Because for 400 years y’all have refused to let us be ‘just Americans’.
You refused to compensate us for the 246 years of chattel slavery. Every time we suceesfully built up our own neighborhoods, towns, institutions and economies you started race riots on false pretexts and swooped in order to burn those very neighborhoods down.
You organized gangs of white hooded terrorists to invade our neighborhoods and homes and engage in an orgy of lawlessness, rape and murder designed to intimidate, brutalize and ‘keep the Blacks down’.
You lynched us by the thousands and called it ‘entertainment’. You discriminated against us, jacked with our voting rights and refused to let us participate in the making the laws that affect us even though it stated in the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments of the Constitution that you couldn’t do that to fellow American citizens.
You have called us ’stupid and ignorant’ when it is my people who have created many of the inventions, medical procedures, scientific advances and processes that have enriched this country and improved life for all of us.
You have called us ‘lazy’ when it is our labor that built Washington D.C, railroads and much of this country’s infrastracture.
You have mocked our beauty and called us ‘ugly’ even as your women rush to spend thousands of dollars to surgically acquire the features that African-American women possess from birth.
You have called us ‘Unamerican’ even though we have fought and shed our blood in EVERY war this country has been involved in and come home from battle to have the rights and freedoms we fought to extend overseas to others denied to us on American shores.
You have repeatedly denigrated and disrespected my people and my culture even as you secretly admire our creativity and seek to emulate it.
You have never apologized for the centuries of pain and suffering that you have inflicted upon my people, but have the nerve to tell me to ‘get over it’. Why can’t you humble yourself to say to my people “i’m sorry?’
Why can’t we be ‘just Americans’? I don’t know. Why don’t you answer your own question for me?
