CNN Host Who Uses Racial Slurs Says Divisive Rhetoric Will Be ‘The Death Of The Country’

beckflag2.jpg Yesterday on NPR, right-wing talk show host Glenn Beck criticized fellow conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh for his strident rhetoric, saying it will be “the death of our industry, and the death of our country.” Listen here:

Beck may be right about Limbaugh, but his own rhetoric is equally divisive and destructive. Some lowlights:

The anti-gay slur “faggot” is nothing more than “a naughty name.” [1/23/07]

“What happened to the Duke lacrosse team was practically a lynching without the rope. And for the first time in my life, Mr. Oreo Cookie without the chocolate on the outside can understand why people celebrated when O.J. Simpson was acquitted.” [1/15/07, using a racial slur for African-Americans that refers to "being black on the outside and white on the inside]

“[W]hat I feel like saying is, ‘Sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies.’” [11/14/06, on what he would like to say to Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), the first elected Muslim member of Congress]

“I wonder if I’m alone in this — you know it took me about a year to start hating the 9-11 victims’ families? Took me about a year.” [9/9/05]

“And that’s all we’re hearing about, are the people in New Orleans. Those are the only ones we’re seeing on television are the scumbags.” [9/9/05]

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has criticized Beck for his anti-gay comments and is now calling on CNN “to address Beck’s crudeness and require that he adhere to basic standards of respect.” (For more information on how to contact CNN, go here.)

UPDATE: The Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC), and the Arab-American Institute (AAI) have all “sent a joint letter to ABC expressing their dismay, urging ABC to reconsider this hiring decision, and requesting a meeting with executives at ABC.”

Transcript:

HOST: Recently, Limbaugh joked that new House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — the first woman Speaker in U.S. history — might well breastfeed a child sitting on her lap during official ceremonies. Limbaugh said he’s just using humor to make a point. But a rival conservative talk show host, Glenn Beck, said such severe rhetoric only drives people apart.

BECK: I truly believe it’s going to be the death of us. It’s going to be the death of our industry, and the death of our country, if we don’t stop dividing ourselves like this. It’s not right.

HOST: Beck has tv gigs on CNN and ABC. Despite that criticism, he’s unabashed about his own beliefs, and he’s taken flack for them.

BECK: There’s nothing wrong with pointing out differences. There’s nothing wrong with having a heated debate. There’s nothing wrong with doing all of those things in an entertaining way. But they cannot define you.

I can’t stand this guy, seen a couple of his show’s and he make’s me sick, a younger version of limpball’s….Reformed drunk, thumping the bible and holier than acceptable for a daily show..He needs to be removed from CNN and made to join his ilk on one of the telavangelest fund raisers on sunday’s and all night show’s….Blessings all

Has anyone ever tried to watch this guy’s show on CNN-Lite? It’s unbelievably trite, stupid and boring. My 13 year old could come up with better crap than this assclown.

    Beck sez:

And there’s the crux of the issue. Beck isn’t a journalist, he’s an entertainer. A cheap sideshow that CNN hired to attempt to compete on FOX’s level, seemingly not realizing that when you get down into the mud pit to compete with FOX, you get as much mud on you as FOX has.

FOX certainly doesn’t mind the filth…that’s what they do. But it’s troubling that CNN doesn’t seem to mind, either.

    I agree, Sharon,
I have watched him a couple of times, but I can’t make it through an entire program. He is a younger Lintball, a thrice married, dry drunk, who has found religion (mormonism) and suffers from ADD, for which he takes medication – sometimes.
He thinks out loud, with little consideration that his thoughts are schizophrenic and often incoherent and insulting.
I write to CNN every time Beck makes the news and ask them to fire his ass – he is a fctor in the poison that infectrs broadcasting.

  21. the fly-man says:

Poor CNN, they don’t want to come right out and fire him. That would mean that they could be held hostage by their listeners ripping their advertisers and associate staff a new one of a boycott. So I guess they’ll get him to attack the other bad guy and make Glenn’s spew “Lite Spew”. I think he has an appointment with the Queen of Hearts. I’m sticking with my position and continue to boycott CNN including Wolf Blitzer, Am Morning and Mr. Dobbs. It’s not hard to tell who their advertisers are , they’re in between the 3.5 minutes of every thing they all try to inform you about. Boy what a win win. Technically Glenn he could tried for using hate speech during a crime, his crime of course is assault of basic human dignity, his own.

  25. Bluestocking says:

What’s that old adage about people who live in glass houses? For pity’s sake, does Beck ever think about the words that come out of his mouth — or does he simply have a chronic case of verbal dysentery?

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a hundred times…if Sigmund Freud were alive today, he’d have a field day with your average neoconservative. It’s unbelievable how many of them are in deep denial about their own attitudes and/or use projection as their primary defense mechanism.

You mean close to the 5 minutes of hate? Really that is all that BOReis about. Inflammatory divisive rhetoric. What I do find funny that if it wasn’t for hate for people you dont know BORe or Blimpbum would themselves be amount to little nor would anyone care about them.

Seems that people are addicted to hate, Ironically the ones that hold the most hate in their hearts in minds are the ones that consider themselves ‘good’

Its all hypocrisy Roger, you yourself would seem to be a hater, when really by hating your are accomplishing nohing other than rasining your blood pressure.

I find you truly amusing. The angrier you get the more I laugh then the angrier you get, and the more i laugh. GET IT?

  40. Tenebrae says:

It’s like Bush NOW talking about bipartinsanship. A right-wing nutjob saying we need less divisive rhetoric translates as: Now that the Democrats took back some power and thus the ability to act on what they say, let’s all play nice and not criticize the President.

  41. Joanie Doe says:

    LIBERALS HATE TRUTH

Liberals never let facts get in the way of a good argument. That is just one of the undeniable truths of life that must be accepted by all conservatives. A recent posting on this web site from a chronic Bush hater called “bushisacrook” offers up W’s “resume” and accomplishments as president. Unfortunately this posting was full of lies and half truths, witch is the typical basis for a liberal arguments. It would take to much space to address them all individually,
    GEORGE W. BUSH RESUME
    ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS PRESIDENT:

    1. I attacked and took over two countries. Yes, this is what Bush did. Without being provoked, George Bush took it upon himself to attack and take over two countries….and we would like to apologize to Canada and Mexico.

    2. I spent the U.S. surplus and bankrupted the Treasury.
I shattered the record for biggest annual deficit in history.
I set an economic record for most private bankruptcies filed in any 2-month period. I set the all-time record for the most foreclosures in a 12-month period. I set all-time record for biggest drop in the history of the stock market. Hey, did you hear? We’re bankrupt. I guess the Wall Street Journal missed that story, and for the record, the deficit, as a percentage of GDP, which is the only important measuring stick, is still lower than it’s been in decades. (It’s called Economics 101. Take it. Learn It. Live It.) It is an economic fact that George Bush inherited a U.S. economy that was stalling and beginning to tumble and had to deal with a world that was in a death spiral from Germany to Japan. Then 9/11 wreaked havoc on the the economic center of the universe….All in all, I’d say Bush has done a pretty good job protecting us from a Carter-like malaise.

    3. In my first year in office I set the all-time record for most days on vacation by any president in US history. After taking the entire month of August off for vacation, I presided over the worst security failure in US history. Any third grader probably understands that a president, never has a vacation. Ever. All they do is move the headquarters for the running of the free world from one location to another. If you call having constant, 24 hour, security presence and daily briefings from everyone who works for you a vacation, then you’re right. ( What a bullshit complaint. I probably shouldn’t even have acknowledged it.)

    4. In my first two years in office over 2 million Americans lost their jobs.
I cut unemployment benefits for more out-of-work Americans than any other president in US history. See Economy 101. And for the record, in the last 8 months nearly 1.5 million new jobs have been created, thanks to Bush tax cuts and economic policy.

    5. I signed more laws and executive orders amending the Constitution than any other president in US history. After Economics 101, check out Civics 102. Amending the constituion requires a super majority vote of both houses of congress, then ratification by the legislative branches of two thirds of the states. It’s a little harder than just a pen stroke.

    6. I presided over the biggest energy crises in US history and refused to intervene when corruption was revealed. I presided over the highest gasoline prices in US history and refused to use the national reserves as past presidents have. Are you starting to understand why school vouchers are so important. Apparently the person who posted this was not alive when Jimmy Carter was president. I remember gas rationing and the “odd/even” method of being told what day you could buy gas. If Bush would have emptied the national oil reserves the day he took office, it would be making it to the pump right about now….but then again, you’d have to understand a little bit about how the oil industry works to get it.

    7. I set the all-time record for most people worldwide to simultaneously take to the streets to protest me (15 million people), shattering the record for protest against any person in the history of mankind. It’s good to be the king.

    8. I dissolved more international treaties than any president in US history. Thank you. And would the jackasses who kept us in those outdated, irrelevant treaties please stand up.

    9. I’ve made my presidency the most secretive and unaccountable of any in US history. How do you know? I mean, wouldn’t the most secret and unaccountable presidency, still be a secret….and unaccountable?

    10. I am the first president in US history to have all 50 states of the Union simultaneously go bankrupt. Again, the Wall Street Journal must be sleeping on the job to miss this one.

    11. I presided over the biggest corporate stock market fraud in any market in any country in the history of the world. No, that would be Bill Clinton. On two counts. The Enron and World Com debacles were at fever pitch under Clinton….and do you recall under which administration Ken Lay and all his ilk were exposed and prosecuted?…..

    12. I am the first president in US history to order a US attack and military occupation of a sovereign nation, and I did so against the will of the United Nations and the world community. Okay take Economics first period, Civics second period and American History third period. We’ll leave the schedule open after lunch.

    13. I rendered the entire United Nations irrelevant. The United Nations rendered itself irrelevant by failing to do what it said it would and then actively try to thwart enforcement of it’s own directives. By the way, you should also do some reading on the Oil For Food scandal that receives virtually no media attention in this country. The reason the U.N. fought against invading Iraq is because so many U.N. officials and world leaders were making so much money off Sadam being in power, to lose it would be unthinkable.

At this point I’m just tired. If there were at least some factual basis to the remaining claims made by this crazed Bush hater I might enjoy the debate, but when an argument is based on lies, ignorance and willful distortion…there is no debate. In fact, there is nothing worthy of debate, a point I prove with a final challenge.

Our visitor wrote; In a little over two years I have created the most divided country in decades, possibly the most divided that the US has been since the civil war. This is from the same write who called Bush a liar, a crook, a drunk, a deserter, a murderer and a moron. Who’s dividing the country?

  48. JonK says:

    Thanks Liberals!

I just wanted to express my gratitude and appreciation to you for making me aware of so many important issues. Your intellectually superiority and individuality are awe inspiring. Some examples of things that I’ve learned from you include:

    1. The earth is warming: I never would have known about global warming if it weren’t for the bumper sticker on your BMW. Now (shhh, don’t tell anyone), I know that these cars aren’t known for clean emissions and low gas mileage; I also know that you live in a large, energy-consuming house cut into a mountain-side. As long as you communicate your message to others without inconveniencing yourself, that is what matters most. It must have been exhausting pasting that bumper sticker on your car. Thanks for the effort.

    2. War is for oil: I learned from another bumper sticker on an SUV that the war in Iraq was for oil. Although that SUV burns more fuel than just about any other car on the road today, it’s great to know that you are so concerned about our soldiers and about the war that you were willing to temporarily deface your bumper to make your point. Please – don’t get off of your heated leather seats and do anything about it – the bumper sticker is more than enough.

    3. Don’t be trendy: Until I moved to Boulder, CO, a hot-bed of elitist liberalism, I never knew how important it was for me to think for myself. While all of you so uniquely (and loudly) advertise the same trendy social causes, wear the same expensive clothes (made in China, of course), drive the same expensive cars and vomit the same obnoxious, elitist rhetoric on the rest of us, you also teach us to think and act for ourselves, and you call the rest of us brainwashed followers. Ironic, isn’t it? Thanks for the lesson in individuality and critical thinking.

    4. Wal-Mart sucks: Without your graceful, eloquent protests, I never would have known that Wal-Mart was ruining the world. Thanks for keeping me informed. Although Target, Sears, Macy’s and just about every other retailer in North America source the same merchandise from the same foreign countries and have similar employment practices and pay scales to Wal-Mart, It’s wonderful that you’ve selected Wal-Mart to pick on. I’m most impressed that you have singled out the one retailer that provides more, affordable food and clothing to lower income families than all of the other retailers combined. I know…you really do want the dirty, uneducated lower class to have access to low cost food and clothing; you just don’t want them to find it in a Wal-Mart in your town. Thanks for caring so much.

    5. War is not the answer: I never would have known that “war is not the answer” if it weren’t for your efforts. Aside from defeating Nazism, Fascism and Communism, providing equal rights for women and ridding the world of rapists and tyrannists, war is pointless. I am sure every American that lived through World War II was truly disappointed with the outcome. In fact, many of them were probably looking forward to speaking German and watching their Jewish friends die mercilessly. Thanks for setting me straight.

Again, I want to thank you for helping me understand so much. Most importantly, thank you for exposing me to the group-think, follower-based mentality so rampant throughout liberalism today. Critical thinking is overrated anyway.

  49. strangely enough says:

Those that are close to the mainstream like O’Reilly

Okay, who’s cleaning off my monitor? That is hilarious. Great joke, ’cause no one could say that kind thing about “loofah” and mean it…

  50. strangely enough says:

And that is a question that should be asked based on Ellison’s past associations.

And what are you inferring? And are you prepared to back it up?

  51. Gregor Samsa says:

I believe Glenn has a problem with Limbaugh because he cannot stand the though that there is another radio personality out there who is a bigger biggot than he is.

  52. strangely enough says:

War is not the answer:… Aside from defeating Nazism, Fascism and Communism, providing equal rights for women and ridding the world of rapists and tyrannists, war is pointless.

WTF? Wat to go off-topic. War did all that? Wow! Does it prevent tooth decay? It did such a great job of stopping Communism in Vietnam, and when did we fight that war against the Soviet Union?

Try taking a Critical Thinking class, or at least look up straw man.

  53. Bluedog49 says:

My favorite idiot-conservative rant is the one about “elitist liberals.” There’s just something incredibly pathetic about someone rushing to type out impassioned defenses of large corporate power and big money complaining about the “elitism” of people who are arguing for things like universal healthcare, minimum wages and rights for working class people.

  54. Xenon says:

Anybody catch the pathetic montage of “tolerance” presented by Headline News tonight in defence of their champion? A pathetic attempt to curry favour if there ever was one.

  55. Super G says:

I just have a few questions for you anti-Glenn people?

1- You are always talking about how we need to embrace diversity, but you sure don’t want any on CNN. So why don’t you specify what type of diversity you are talking about. When and where is diversity good and when is it bad?

2- are you sure you don’t like him? because I don’t miss him on TV or the radio, because I love him, but I sure don’t pay any attention to people that I don’t like. You seemed to be pretty interested. My guess, you know he is right so you don’t want him on TV because you know people will wake up, but for some strange reason, you want people to avoid reality. am I right? Rethoric, I know I am.

3 – I hope CNN keeps him. I think they will because though I don’t have numbers, I’m pretty sure they are getting a good audience increase with him. After all most people are conservative and conservatives watch/listen to the news more. They also read more. There are statistics on that.

And BTW, CNN is trying to bring O’Reilly viewers (like myself) to CNN, but have you noticed that Glenn goes BEFORE or AFTER Bill, and not at the same time? Not a coincidence. We can watch and admire both of them. Though Glenn sure is funnier and soooooo cute.

  56. Just the facts... says:

You have it all Wrong…….. You have a problem with being called faggot’s yes it is a crude term to describe a sinful life style. But it is still a Sinful life style just the same…….:(

  57. wakeup says:

I have to agree they have chosen to live that life style. If they get tag gay, fag, faggot or homo it goes with the life style they choose. Like calling a thief a crook, or robber. You can’t try in lump that in with racial or ethnic slurs, people can’t help being born Jewish, black, Chinese etc….. they had NO choice……
