The towers did not defy physics. Buildings only ever fall upon themselves because they are too large to tip over (that’s a fact of physics).
If people think buildings cannot fail under these circumstances (they can and they did), then they could be led to a sense of false security in super-skyscrapers that may prove as disasterous as what occured on 9/11. There’s no reason to make buildings that tall. And saying they are safe in the event of an emergency endangers those who inhabit them.

The whole antiwar movement needs to change its image and stop looking like a troup of malcontents and misfits generally gathered together for a good time and “golden oldies music” rather than the true intent of the protest. To stop this war.
If you want the war to continue, by all means, continue to associate yourselves with and sing the praises of Cindy Sheehan and her group. There seems to be no antivenom to counter the effects of a Cindy Sheehna endorsement. And people will continue to die.

Many, many hundreds of thousands of us could not make it to DC today, but we were there in solidarity. In Louisville KY, we had two large street rallies. One was an intersection event and one sign said “Honk to Impeach.” The sound of the car horns was deafening. The tide has turned in the heartland.
One car pulled up and a man screamed out, “If it wasn’t for George Bush, you m….. f…… wouldn’t be here.”

Congressional Reps Dennis Kucinich, Maxine Waters, John Conyers, and Lynn Woolsey gave rousing speeches against the Iraq occupation, and Rev. Jesse Jackson fired up the crowd of patriots to peacefully fight war.
Hollywood celebrities Jane Fonda, Sean Penn, Susan Sarandon, and Tim Robbins gave passionate speeches, and veterans of Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, and present Iraq War called for the killing to stop in Iraq.
Everybody at Rally demands the Congress to end Iraq Fiasco War!

I wrote to my Congressman, Tim Holden, asking him to do something to prevent Bush boy from attacking Iran. I just received his response in the mail today. Please allow me to share.
“Thank you for contacting me in support of H.Con.Res. 391 introduced by Rep. Peter DeFazio (OR-04).”
“H.Con.Res. 391 sought to express the sense of Congress that the President should not initiate military action against Iran with respect to its nuclear program without first obtaining authorization from Congress. This resolution states initiating militry action without conressional approval in response ot Iran’s nuclear program does not fall with the President’s “Commander-in-Chief” powers under the Constitution and rejects any suggestion that Public Law 107-40, the authorization of force resolution approved in response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, extends to authorizing military action against Iran over its nuclear program. This resolution never came before the full House for a vote before Congress adjourned for the 109 Congress.. Pleae know I will keep your views in mind should similar legislation be introduced in the 110 Congress.”
I added the bold. The point I’m trying to make is for everyone to contact their Congressperson and request that a similar bill to H.Con.Res. 391 be drafted and sent for a vote. The children (Republics) refused to keep us safe and instead decided that flag burning and gay marriage were more important than keeping us from escalating this war. Maybe now that the grown ups are in charge, sanity can return to Congress.

The great thing about the House is that they are all up for reelection every two years. We have a lot of ringers in the crowd, but it isn’t impossible to work against their reelection if they won’t heed. And letting them know you will is powerful.

Talk is tough, but count the votes. Politics is the art of the possible. Luckily for us, the Dems are not stupid enough to start a process they can’t GUARANTEE will end with the person(s) removed from office.
It is FAR better to investigate and DOCUMENT the crimes, which will lead to INDICTMENTS and scandals that MAY allow for a subsequent impeachment process, though resignation is more likely at that point. Sworn testimony in the Congress can be used by any court in the world, unlike newspaper/tv/blog reports, which are NOT evidence in a court of law.

January 27th, 2007 at 8:28 pmHe flew from our home in Oregon and took time off from work. He is staying through Monday in order to meet with our Congressional reps. We are probably late getting active, but I have probably written a hundred letters to everyone I can think (reporters, correspondents, journalists, authors, Congressional reps, Senators, etc..) of over the last 6 months. Basically, I have only recived one brief response from anyone over that entire time. I sent a message to CNN (Jack Cafferty) in response to his question yesterday about whether this demonstration will do any good and almost fell out of my chair when he read in on the TV.

No, that’s not true, which is my point.
Impeachment is a power of the House; Conviction is a power of the Senate.
As a fellow protester, let me educate you some:
Most likely, New Mexico will use Jefferson’s protocols to file an impeachment bill in a month or so. What will happen to that bill? Will it reach the floor? Only for a moment, and then it will be sent to Conyer’s committee, which will probably vote it out. That will take a couple of months all told. At that point it will LOSE on a floor vote.
Is it worth doing? YES IT IS. But don’t think that getting rid of Bushco is as easy as waving the Constitution at them. Impeachment power has NEVER worked (no convictions) — when Bushco attacks Iran in March, no impeachment process will be possible.
Inquests, scandal, outing the crimes, indictments, and working to swing more of the Congress our way — that is the only real path we have before us.

Usually a film crew is allowed to scan shoot crowds from the roof of the Capital building, but again no feed to C-SPAN from that vantage point. Bush must be very afraid for the public to know how many really attended the protest rally.

However, I do notice that the media is now covering these protests as if they’re suddenly more important than earlier ones. Half of 435 votes = 218 votes.
The Out of Iraq Caucus has 73 members. No doubt we would get other Dem and R votes for articles of impeachment, but we MUST HAVE 218 to succeed.
No amount of pressure on the House will produce the 67 votes we will need in the Senate to complete the process, and those votes are MUCH harder to get.
I’ve street protested over 400 times since this all started. I’m on your side. But it is worth understanding the situation in the Congress, and not burning up your anger on the wrong people.

House members have next to ZERO chance of becoming president. Only one has ever succeeded, and that as a Dark Horse (McKinley, IIRC).
• Kucinich didn’t say a peep when the 2004 election was stolen in his state. You would think he would have added his effort to the recount — he did not. So he’s not perfect.
That’s OK — perfect politician is not a plus. But ‘lone voice in the wilderness’ is also not the finish line. It’s just one more person in the race.
While Senators don’t go to protest rallies very often, that doesn’t mean they aren’t on our side, as with Feingold, Kerry, Boxer, Kennedy, etc. It’s a CAUCUS, and everyone plays a role.

I just got off the phone with my husband. He called the major newspaper in our area and was interviewed over the phone. He told me he found a number of others from Oregon there and they were going back to their hotels to phone the other major papers in Oregon to give them interviews.

Support for impeachment is around 40 to 50 percent. If we can get some of the dead-enders on the right to support impeachment of the president after the congressional investigations, the Congress will follow suit.

i talked with a friend earlier, works construction, heavy equipment – paints a picture of the kind of people he sees daily – when i expressed how happy i was about the dems getting the congress back, he agreed and told me he sees lots of anti bush bumper stickers everyday…

If people think buildings cannot fail under these circumstances (they can and they did), then they could be led to a sense of false security in super-skyscrapers that may prove as disasterous as what occured on 9/11. There’s no reason to make buildings that tall. And saying they are safe in the event of an emergency endangers those who inhabit them.

THAT’S RIGHT!!! A dozen men with box cutters got lucky on “the day that shall not be named.” Cell phones made impossible connections. There was no molten metal spewing out the side of the building. A commercial jet really did disappear into a 14′ hole in the Pentagon. Random fires really did cause a symmetrical collapse of a building that was never hit. There were no pre-contact explosions before the airliners hit the towers. There was no below-ground explosion before each tower collapsed.

Depends on several factors. At lower altitudes and speeds, the signals can pass through the glass windows (glass is actually a porous suspended-state liquid), just as they do the glass in your car or home, and reach the radio relay antennae that they employ.

Cell phone company Qualcomm (QCOM) has teamed with American Airlines (AMR) to develop satellite-based air-to-ground cellular service. Several smaller companies are working on rival systems. This country was born from Tyranny and the forefathers in the Decleration of Independence wrote that it is our duty to alter, abolish and to institute a new government, whenever any form of government becomes destructive to the will of the electorate.

The Rachel’s of the world, and their view of the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence are seen as some sort of impediment when their views are in question. Instead of having an intelligent perspective, and explaining their points in a succinct way? They will resort to character assassination, name-jacking, then posting instigative posts to allow themselves to be portrayed as martyrs, or just not answer the question. The tactics they use is find a “strawman” then associate that with whomever they are trying to slander. Use the same slanderous attack over and over again until it becomes an idiom. I will never understand this logic…purely sick.
January 27th, 2007 at 10:23 pmI’m a DC native, so I went down to the demonstration (to borrow a phrase from the Stones). I had camera in tow, and was looking for the kind of shots that only this kind of event can provide (haven’t post-processed the photos, so I can’t share them yet).
I’m not an overtly patriotic person (overt demonstrations of patriotism are less about love of country, and more about “hey – look at me”, IMHO).
That said, I have twice been overwhelmed by emotion at certain patriotic moments. The first time it happened was in 1999, when I took my son to see the Statue of Liberty. When the boat to the statue rounded Ellis Island, it dawned on me that I was seeing exactly what millions of penniless immigrants had seen when they came to the US. My irish ancestors were probably among them. This realization welled up in me, and before I knew it, tears were rolling from my eyes. Being a big strong man, I didn’t want my then 4 year-old son or the other tourists on the boat to see me crying, so I feigned fatigue and rubbed my eyes, turned around to face away from others, etc., until I had regained my composure.
The same thing happened today. One minute, I was busy snapping pics, the next, I was trying to hide my tears (my son lives with his mom in NJ, so he wasn’t there – but I wish he had been). The trigger was someone passing in front of me with our flag.
I have to say, I love my counrty so much, I can’t accurately express it.
It’s time for us to return to the values so eloquently expressed by our founders in the Declaration of Independence, the Preamble to the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. It’s time to defend our country. She’s been raped and scarred by the “conservative” powers that be – but she’s still beautiful, and still worth loving.
On my way back to my home in Virginia, I noticed all of the traffic and the people seemingly unaware of what was happening on the Mall, and apparently too busy following Chimpy’s call for more shopping (the entrance to the Mall – this time, I’m referring to the shopping mall – was crowded) to be bothered by such things as people actually having given their lives to make us safe, secure, and prosperous.
I have a feeling we, as individuals, are getting ready to learn a really hard, really costly lesson.

One grandparent who had lost a grandchild in the war. He choked up while describing it. I wish this hit home to the people who are actually making these important decisions. I don’t think they are making any sacrifices at all (I know Bush and Cheney are not sacrificing anything). If they had family members invested in this and at risk of mortal peril they wouldn’t be making these decisions. Why are all other American’s children expendable or an acceptable loss..? Why are American’s tax dollars so easy to spend? Would they be investing this kind of money if it was their own? Would they still have the same conviction?

I’ve been to a few well-attended events on the National Mall. The first million-person event was the 4th of July, 1976 (I remember thinking, at the time, how well Gerald Ford had stabilized the country on the heels of Watergate – the sense of national pride was palpable). There was definately a million people there that day.
Today, the size of the crowd was difficult to get a handle on – it’s not like everyone is trying to see fireworks. The crowd was very dense, but thinned out suddenly as you walked away from the Capitol and towards the Washington Monument. More people seemed to congregate towards the sides of the Capitol. I’d say 250,000 to 500,000. Can’t be more specific and remain honest.
Notable:
Quite a cross-section of America. All age groups were represented. African Americans and latinos were underrepresented.
the non professional, non famous speakers had the best messages and communicated them more effectively.
Everybody was peaceful, respectful, clean, and orderly.
Lots of fringe political groups (nothing wrong with that) handing out info. Socialists, militants, as well as reps of Christianity and Islam.
Kids between the ages of 8 and 13 looked either like they were embarassed that mom and/or dad had brought them there (it’s a socially ackward time of life), or like they were having the best time of their lives. More of the latter than the former.
Plenty of vets (especially iraq vets).
I think it was a bit too festive considering the gravity of the cause.

The people are wonderful and the schools are good, though with the President’s wonderful “no Child Left Behind” (tongue in cheek), the war and the cuts everywhere for everything, the schools have been slowly cutting more and more teachers and programs.

It is a huge success… being able to mobilise even 10,000 is no small matter (obviously michael does not know what a crowd of 10,000 looks like). There were also simultaneous rallies in California.

With China’s increase in demand for oil, and the US invading Iran, do you think China will sit back and let this happen? The natural progression to this scenario is nuclear. I support the war such that I support fighting these people and not pretending they dont exist as so many other do.
Has Bush made mistakes? Hell yes. Though it seems to me in most major wars in the past, it always seemed like the first few years were always full of screw ups, so it’s not unique here.
The switch from Invasion to occupation was abysimal , though I did some research into it, and the US military has been sounding taht alarm since the Panama invasion.. that the US agencies are broken and incapable of setting up shop in teh aftermath of an invasion which is why the military had to get more and more involved with that aspect as the 90s and 2000s came on.
So I dont think it’s entirely fair to lay all that at Bush. Our govt in general has profound problems ,, it’s not prepared for the post-Cold World war.

A lot of things haven’t been said in plain english by the administration, a lot is left to read between the lines. It’s my own theory that we invaded Iraq primarily to get our foot in the door for eventual attacks on iran and saudi arabia (the leaders of shiia and sunni muslims and their global branches). If that is the reason, of course it wouldn’t be publicized. But even if its not the reason, tehre were so many reasons to invade that even half of them were discredited , there are still many legitimate reasons.
It’s crucially important to give people in taht region another system other than arab secular dicatorship and islamic dictatorship.
The world will not survive if Islam caliphate is established.

It brings the total in the area to around 200,000 with 140,000 in Iraq. We have 2 carrier groups just off the coast and I’m not sure if that number is included in the roughly 200,000 troops.
What do you suppose will happen if we attack Iran as some believe? How many Iranians are going to flood across the border. Do you think 200,000 troops can repel them? Theres 350,000 Iranian troops and several million pissed off Iraqis that would probably join their side. So we’d be looking at 1 million new soldiers (I’ll use the term here if you don’t mind).
What do we have in our back pocket to counter this? 3rd and 4th tours of duty for any of the soldiers with knowledge and experience so maybe 400,000. Out of that, only a small percentage are the actual trigger pullers (not being a soldier you might not understand that term but I am a vet (Army) so I’ll use it). We have been dusting off the selective service board so the draft will come back but that won’t give us boots on the ground for 6 to 9 months, if not longer.
So how do we repel these masses? Oh, that’s why there’s those carriers out in the gulf. They’ll use tactical nukes in Iran, Afghanistan and possibly Iraq. All for what, because Saddam didn’t have WMD’s? Oil? Revenge? Armagedon? I guess it won’t matter much after that.

as I stated before, the “surge” will increase our troop strength in baghdad (where approx 80% of the nation’s violence occurs) by 150%.
our troop-to-task ratio will equal 50:1 and our troop-to-enemy ratio will equal 10/15:1.

They are the best of the best. But they don’t get to pick where or why or how or with what protection or against what enemy. That all lies with the Presiden and this administration. We could have left the sanctions against Iraq stay while we destroyed the Taliban and Al Qiada (remember them, the enemy?). That is a lie. Like I said before, between 95 and 05 I worked for a Asian-based ocean container freight line. My job was handling the vessel unloading on the West and then coordinating between Consignees, Customs Brokers, Dept of Homeland Sec CHB, the Port, the Union at the Port, trucking companies and railroads.
In the past, if you were importing freight into the US , you had till about two days before the ship was to arrive to submit your shipping manifest to this shipping line, the shipping line consolidates all the shipping manifests and gives that to customs and the port. Then the consignee works with Customs to pay the Duty and fullfill any requirement exams.
Since attack-by-container is a plausible scenerio, the United States decided to forward deploy US Customs. And the rules for cargo declartion were changed. No container can be loaded onto a ship if that cargo would be a ship that was in the US waters at any time (no matter what the destination was) with that cargo manifest being examined by US Customs. The cut-off was two days before vessel depature. US Customs could dictate the foreign port to not load a container if Customs decides. Any ship that has cargo on it that was sanctioned would not be permitted in US waters.
All the shipping lines work very closely with Customs to ensure that the datasets being caputured from teh 1000s of individual shippers are used in such a way so that anomolies can be detected (new shipping companies shipping on a trade lane it never did before, etc.)
There’s many other changes but I’m not going into them.

I’ve spent my entire adult life in the building industry. Planes knocked down those buildings within the reality of Statics (structural physics) and the laws of nature. It took five and a half hours to get to Washington. We parked right on “K†street and walked to the lawn. We were listening to the speakers which they were really rushing through, there was some music I didn’t know which wasn’t bad. Once on the lawn you couldn’t see the stage because of all the signs unless you were right on top of it. You can’t easily estimate numbers from the ground but if someone would just ask the guys in the constantly circiling helicopter, they probably know. As we prepared to march people moved from the stage so i could get up to it. There was a large plexiglass tank about ten feet high packed with shoes overflowing onto the ground. It was something Code Pink is doing but I never got the details. On stage there were still people miling about. There was also a flag draped coffin with a military nameplate. His Father sat beside it as someone with a tape recorder tried to ask him questions over the music. He answered with one hand on the coffin and his other hand holding his sons well worn boots in the air.
It took a little while to get everyone moving when it actually began. The march is really just going around the block. Hey it’s a big block. Even that would be pretty hard on the older folk. It was all pretty calm. There were free signs that different groups had made up and loads of the home made ones. I love homemade american protest artwork. There was a guy with a big paper machie Bush head with laurel wreath and toga for that Cesar look, His bloody hands on sticks clutching Money in one and Oil in the other. There were people chanting and some had instruments. All races and ages,there were kids in strollers and people with walkers. Some chants are better then others. Maybe these things need to be approved or something. At one point a guy ran into the crowd and started yelling USA ,USA, USA. The crowd responded (correctly), OUT OF IRAQ, OUT OF IRAQ , OUT OF IRAQ and he scampered away.
Then entertainment.
We rounded a corner and the first thing i noticed was that a large number of the crowd seemed to stall a little ways ahead. It looked like someone was putting on a little show and people were stopping to watch. As I got closer there was a guy in a gas mask dancing around like crazy. Weird. On our left was a rectangle of fencing. Inside were two cops and behind that rectangle with the cops inside were EIGHT BUSH ANTI-ANTI-WAR DEMONSTRATORS. I could smell the stupid. The guy with the latex gas mask was pointing to a sign “hippies smell.†Gee I get it. Then their was an old white haired hag yelling shit at people walking by with their kids. That was you wasn’t it, joanie? I was the guy that told you to “shut your dirty pie hole.†It was a pleasure. About that time one of the cops in the pen moved over to us and raised his hands and begged, “Please, please, Don’t feed the animals.†Everyon had a laugh and we kept moving. What a weak and worthless bunch of dumb animals they were. It was really like seeing them in a zoo.
We walked and chanted and just about at the end there was a small marching band. Less then ten members but they had things covered. Blue outfits and they were kids that looked about 12 years old. They were GREAT. Think of a marching band that can play and sing and give george bush the finger at the same time. There is hope for our country. These kids should lead the march next time. We could have danced the whole way.
Things broke up pretty quick. We took some pictures. I didn’t see any police problems but they usually come later. We had to get back.
Protesting against war does not cause war joanie you lying freak. It was great to meet you.

Army: 280 (64% of responses) to Iraq; 179 once, 78 twice, 15 three times, 8 claim 4 tours (note: normal Army rotations are 1 year – or longer. The war will reach four years duration this March)
USAF: 27% had been to Iraq – 34 once, 11 twice, 2×3, 12×4 (Air Force tours were 90 days at the beginning of the war but were extended to 120 days in 2004. Some USAF members serve 6 month or longer tours)
USMC: 70% – 39 once, 17 twice, 4×3, none claim 4 (Marines generally serve 8 month tours)
Navy: 34% – 49×1 13×2 3×3 4×4 (Navy tour lengths vary by position)

Some specific questions and responses:
QUESTION ONE
If you had to decide today, would you re-enlist or — if an officer — extend your commitment?
The purpose of this question is to determine if Iraq is “breaking” the military by attrition. The answer appears to be “no”.
Of the total responses, 200 (21%) indicated they would not extend/re-up. Of those, 94 (17 USAF, 6 Marines, 20 Navy, 50 Army, 1 Coast Guard) cited wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as one of the three primary reasons for their decision (an equal number cite pay). Of those 94, only 52 have been to Iraq.
Of all troops who’ve been to Iraq, 104 of 470 (22%) answered no.
Seventy-five of 280 Army Iraq veterans answered no (27%) – but only 38 (14%) cite Iraq/Afghan wars as a reason.
Throughout all services, 59 of those who answered yes cite those same wars as one reason for doing so. Re-enlistment rates have exceeded goals for the duration of the Iraq war – so far.
