During today’s House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform hearing on the political manipulation of climate change science, Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN) revealed the Bush administration has barred Director of National Intelligence John Negroponte from saying the phrase “global warming.”
Cooper said he recently attended a dinner party at which Negroponte was speaking, and “word slipped through the crowd he was not allowed to utter the words ‘global warming,’ at least not in the same sentence. Apparently, he was allowed to say the word ‘global’ in a separate sentence, and ‘warming’ in a separate sentence, but not together.” Watch it:
UPDATE: Several more videos from today’s hearing are HERE.
Transcript:
REP. JIM COOPER (D-TN): Second, let me mention a dinner party I attended about two months ago here in Washington. The honoree was John Negroponte. He was then the director of national intelligence. He was there to receive an environmental award.
It was very interesting because in anticipation of his remarks, word slipped through the crowd he was not allowed to utter the words “global warming,” at least not in the same sentence. Apparently, he was allowed to say the word “global” in a separate sentence, and “warming” in a separate sentence, but not together. So it became a little parlor game during his remarks, to see how closely he would fit the words “global” and “warming” and not incur the wrath of the White House.
I thought this was a sad statement of the current condition of our scientific community when a very eminent statesman like John Negroponte would be so hamstrung by the administration that he would not be allowed to utter the two words in conjunction. I thought that was an indignity to Mr. Negroponte and a sad comment on the level of the Bush administration to so hamstring its talented and capable appointees.

Sounds like Necroponte is severely cowed…NOT ALLLOWED? thought he was a big bad neocon?
January 30th, 2007 at 1:48 pmGlobal. Warming.
January 30th, 2007 at 1:49 pm“word slipped through the crowd”?
Not that I enjoy defending this corrupt administration, but is this assertion anything more than an apocryphal anecdote?
January 30th, 2007 at 1:50 pmMORE PROPADANDA technique, used for keeping the U.S. citizenry out of the social/political loop. Talk it up, America. The more we speak about it and yell against it, the more the idea seems too obvious for comfort. The rest of the world must know how much the people hate and despise this administration and its’ corrupt leaders. GRRR!
January 30th, 2007 at 1:51 pmI would be shocked if I weren’t experienced.
Thanks for posting this, TP. It’s a window.

January 30th, 2007 at 1:54 pmLet’s see the corporate media work their magic with this one.
January 30th, 2007 at 1:57 pmKids, can you say Bush and treason in the same sentence? This treasonous gang currently holed up in our White House is so farked up that it is virtually impossible to smear them: just reporting the plain truth is totally damning…
January 30th, 2007 at 1:57 pmTHIS IS BLACKMAIL, PLAIN & SIMPLE!
January 30th, 2007 at 1:59 pmCivil. War.
January 30th, 2007 at 2:00 pmI guess Bush, Cheney and the word “treason” will be disallowed as well; that is, until the people take this democracy back over - after all, it still is “of the people, by the people, and for the people”!
January 30th, 2007 at 2:00 pm#9
No. Guns.
January 30th, 2007 at 2:02 pmI’ll admit this is believable, and even most likely true, given some of the antics of this administration - but c’mon… this is little more than hearsay and rumormongering…
January 30th, 2007 at 2:03 pmNote that in the Bush State of the Union, the President used only the right-wing talking point, “global climate change,” and not “global warming.”
January 30th, 2007 at 2:03 pmomigod. It’s like “Nest Egg” in “Lost In America”…
January 30th, 2007 at 2:05 pmAlbert Brooks told Julie Haggerty that she couldn’t say “nest” and “egg” in the same sentence!
Everyone repeat after me: Global Warming
January 30th, 2007 at 2:06 pmI’m with #3 - this needs to be tested.
So here’s an idea - let’s find out if Hank Paulson, an open environmentalist, has received similar orders…

January 30th, 2007 at 2:12 pmVeritas,
It really hasn’t been “of the people, by the people, and for the people†for some time. Americans are too lazy to inform themselves and unfortunately the most sophisticated propaganda machine wins, in America unfortunately that is the Republicans.
In thinking about the rest of the worlds perspective about us and who we really are on this globe I’m coming to the conclusion that we are the great Satan.
January 30th, 2007 at 2:18 pmwe don’t have hunger, we have “low food security.”
We don’t have “global warming,” we have “planetary overheating.”
January 30th, 2007 at 2:26 pmMan, that is just sick, when are the dems going to have enough and just impeach the b*stards already?

January 30th, 2007 at 2:31 pmTrip Monkey: Not that I enjoy defending this corrupt administration, but is this assertion anything more than an apocryphal anecdote? - - Yep, what Trip said.
January 30th, 2007 at 2:31 pmSo, has anyone ever heard Negroponte say “global warming”? Story rings true.
January 30th, 2007 at 2:32 pmWe’re not the great Satan, Rocks. We are more like a virus. We don’t know what we are doing to ourselves and we don’t know how to stop it…. well, most of us don’t at least…
January 30th, 2007 at 2:33 pmHow about: Impeach, Bush, Cheney
All in one sentence as in: Let’s impeach Bush and Cheney, now!!!
January 30th, 2007 at 2:49 pmTripMaster Monkey. Global warming is a real possibility. It is also possible that the Bush Administration is trying to downplay it with tactics like these (I doubt it). But thank you for a reasonable assessment of this thread. If we start treating hearsay as news, it just makes the real news less credible.
January 30th, 2007 at 2:50 pmJust a nitpick, the ‘Transcript’ shows that Jim Cooper is a (R-TN), but the main article and screenshot both show (D-TN).
January 30th, 2007 at 2:53 pmSpose Bush also banned the usage of ass and hole in the same sentence?

I think it should also be noted that Negroponte oversaw and facilitated the U.S. torture and support of dictators in S. America in the 80’s.
January 30th, 2007 at 3:10 pmWe’ve known for some time the Admin. is manipulating EPA, NASA and supressing evidence of Global Warming.
I think (finaly) most Americans realize environmental damage/ global warming are problems (about 20 years after the rest of the world), finally the truth filters through.
The Democratic chairman of a House panel examining the government’s response to climate change said Tuesday there is evidence that senior Bush administration officials sought repeatedly “to mislead the public by injecting doubt into the science of global warming.”
Huh, a Bush administration official sought to mislead the public.
January 30th, 2007 at 3:12 pmWhodathunk?
lol
January 30th, 2007 at 3:18 pmwe don’t have hunger, we have “low food security.â€
We don’t have “global warming,†we have “planetary overheating.â€
We don’t have “civil war” in Iraq, we have “sectarian violence”.
January 30th, 2007 at 3:20 pmHow about this?
January 30th, 2007 at 3:28 pm“Our concerns about climate change are so huge, they are literally global. Warming the cockles of our hearts, is the concern you all are showing.”
So saying that Bush is the best GLOBAL leader and that is a feeling WARMING my heart knowing that he is the USA President is Verbotten?
January 30th, 2007 at 3:31 pmTPers, don’t forget that Negroponte was the grandmaster of U.S. foreign policy in S. and C. AMerica during the 80’s - supporting terrorists, supporting dictators, torture techniques training to juntas - you’re regular run of the mill “fight against communism or terrorism or anarchy or drugs, etc”.
January 30th, 2007 at 3:39 pmWe all know that the Bush Admin. has been manipulating intel and output of FDA, EPA, NASA.
Luckily it seems that the majority of Americans (right and left) realize that gloabl warming exists and is disastrous - about 20 years later then the rest of the world, but what do you expect from a population living in a bubble.
i’d like to hear “Negroponte”, and “U.S. foreign policy overlord of America’s s. and c. american torture and terrorism campaign in the 80’s” in the same sentence for once. (boy that was a run-on)
January 30th, 2007 at 3:56 pmI thought that was an indignity to Mr. Negroponte and a sad comment on the level of the Bush administration to so hamstring its talented and capable appointees.
Okay. Negroponte and the words talented and capable should not be inthe same sentence.
January 30th, 2007 at 3:56 pm#35,36, KarlX
January 30th, 2007 at 5:13 pmMakes sense to me.
Many have forgottenNegroponte’s role in the Reagan Contra affair.
Also, #37 dlet
Negroponte and talented to not belong in the same sentence. A man with the background of Negroponte shouldn’t be afraid to step on Bush’s toes. (Of course, Cheney is the intimidating one. and Negroponte may have reason to tread softly in that case.)
should read DO NOT BELONG.
January 30th, 2007 at 5:13 pmMore propadanda and strategery for me, the Dictator, to use. Fool me once -shame on you. Fool me twice, uhhh… uhhh…
January 30th, 2007 at 5:15 pmI cannot believe someone qualified Negroponte as “talented and capable”.
I know what he is capable of -I don’t know that that makes him a talented person.
January 30th, 2007 at 5:53 pm#11
Borrow. Mine.
Or one of my bows.
That has a certain ring doesn’t it” Bow to the President. Bow for the Prsident. Draw a bow for the President.
I like that thought.
January 30th, 2007 at 7:57 pmMan, my typing sucks! Sorry.
January 30th, 2007 at 7:59 pmThat’s totally idiotic.
Not that I wouldn’t put it past BushCo to try something like that, but it sounds like a joke made the rounds.
January 30th, 2007 at 8:32 pmSuggested sentences for Negroponte:
The effects of co2 emmissions have been GLOBAL. WARMING has occured in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
January 30th, 2007 at 8:46 pmAmazing. That’s how touchy they are. For them the argument is lost.
January 30th, 2007 at 9:50 pmNot that I enjoy defending this corrupt administration, but is this assertion anything more than an apocryphal anecdote?
Comment by TripMaster Monkey
Spot on. We can find plenty of other more credible examples of the Bush administration downplaying climate change. We don’t need hearsay or unsupported anecdotes. They shouldn’t strengthen the case one iota.
January 30th, 2007 at 10:18 pmYeah, suuure… hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah !!!!!!!

January 31st, 2007 at 7:08 amI’m not so sure I’d call Negroponte talented or capable in the same sentance either.
January 31st, 2007 at 2:19 pmA. All politicians are liars.
January 31st, 2007 at 4:32 pmB. Rep. Cooper is a politician.
C. You add the rest of the syllogism
The president did not say ‘global warming’ in his last State of Union address; he said ‘global climate change.’
See how the lobbyists are now taking over control of the executive branch (they’ve already infested and control Congress).
Let’s face it everyone. We are being played all the time by the rich and the government, who go hand and hand. I used to work and live in DC, and I left disgusted and cynical. With good reason, no doubt. Even the ‘honest’ politician has to bend over for lobbyist.
There are three branches of government:
- The Executive (in roads being made successfully by lobbyists)
- The Supreme Court
- Lobbyists (yup I substituted them for Congress b/c Congress DOES NOT run the House and Senate, the biggest, richest companies in US and the world do)
Now we are going to war with Iran? And then North Korea? And the Taliban are coming back in Afghanistan. We are spewling American and Iraqi blood all over that country and ‘welcoming’ back our boys and girls who are either mentally or physically injuried, or at the worst, both.
Why aren’t we out in the streets?!?! Why are we letting all this happen? Are we that complacent? Shall we lie down on the train tracks and become another rail for them (politicians and big business) to run over (Thoreauian overtones) or are we going to do something?
This great country is heading for total disaster because of this administration.
IT’S OUR COUNTRY! LET’S SHOW THEM IT’S OUR COUNTRY. WE WILL DECIDE MR. DECIDER.
I’m going from California to Washington for the March 17 March against the Iraq war. It has got to stop. It’s almost five years. We Americans have blood on our hands if we just sit around and watch big screen football or play video or chat on the Internet all day. We need to take back OUR country before it is too late. It’s almost too late. They have us almost completely programmed, fearful and roboticized. I’m so F**king made (excuse me, but I am).

Losing a Home to the Wildfires in California
We lost our homes in the wildfires of 2003 in Lake Arrowhead. It was a time that we just didn’t think we would ever get over. So to see homes burning once again in Lake Arrowhead and San Diego was a d?j? vu.
