FBI turns to broad new wiretap method

The FBI appears to have adopted an invasive Internet surveillance technique that collects far more data on innocent Americans than previously has been disclosed.

Instead of recording only what a particular suspect is doing, agents conducting investigations appear to be assembling the activities of thousands of Internet users at a time into massive databases, according to current and former officials. That database can subsequently be queried for names, e-mail addresses or keywords.

Such a technique is broader and potentially more intrusive than the FBI’s Carnivore surveillance system, later renamed DCS1000. It raises concerns similar to those stirred by widespread Internet monitoring that the National Security Agency is said to have done, according to documents that have surfaced in one federal lawsuit, and may stretch the bounds of what’s legally permissible.

Somebody got to the WaPo weenies, for f*ck’s sake.
It’s useless to remind them that they’re a newspaper, isn’t it?

  6. Jim says:

No surprise here. what did you expect? Its the Main Stream Media. They’ve been cowed for 6+ years by this Administration. No guts and for damm sure no backbone!

  7. Angry One says:

“Well, I’m vice president and they’re not.”

3 – How else can Big Brother know who are “unlawful enemy combatants” without monitoring every communication?

If your thoughts are pure, you have nothing to worry about. But if you have blasphemed Big Brother, the Thought Police will come for you.

You do know the FBI can listen in on your conversations and pinpoint your location using your cell phone, even if you turn it off.

In Bush’s perfect world, you will be safe from terrorists and fearful of your own government, your own neighbors, your own thoughts.

  9. Bowdler says:

I assume that this is about the energy policy meetings in 2001. Would anyone know if any other group is seeking this info.
Just “connecting the dots”: one would think that american oil co.s were cut out of Iraqi exploration (exploitation?), then realized that a larger quantity of oil was there than when they aquiesed, then along with Cheney decided that Iraq needed to be conquered.

  10. s says:

Well, I guess someone at the Post would rather continue to live….or not be the victim of a BushCo Swiftboating…….

But you know what? They, the pigs, can’t shut everyone up forever. They are going to lose this battle against America because there are some thing in life that are more powerful than their crap. And those are the good things like truth n such. Yeah

BERLIN — German investigators have recommended that prosecutors issue arrest warrants against 13 U.S. intelligence operatives in connection with the kidnapping, beating and secret detention of a German citizen suspected of having links to terrorist networks.

The operatives were part of a CIA-sponsored team that transported alleged terrorists to interrogation camps around the world. Investigators say the group forced a handcuffed and blindfolded Khaled Masri, a German citizen of Lebanese descent, onto a Boeing 737 and flew him from Macedonia to Afghanistan in January 2004. Masri was not charged with a crime and was released after five months.

    Not Happy,

I would point out that the 1984 esque world you point out is not just Bush’s dream. I would say that most American politicians/ wealthy elite support the concentration of power/wealth, mass manipulation of information/media, militarization of civilian society, dismanteling of public systems, surveilance of citizens. U.S. foreign policy certainly follows this route (we hear “U.S. interests”= military industrial corporate complex interests).
But, on the other hand, Bush and crew are definetly ratcheting up the bar, not even attempting to disguise their domestic policy as anything but “you’re with us or against us” “you’re a terrorist if you do anything but agree with me” sort of stuff.
I think as PT goers we should remember that we want the discourse opened up, not limited to what the coprorate media and wealthied elite would have us debate: within the confines of Dem. vs Rep.
And to Bowdler: I agree, I’d love to see a good piece thuroughly covering Dick Dick Dick Head Cheney’s energy/strategic closed door meetings.
I’m feeling long winded, sorry again.
where is Saixon, or whatever that Alien guy is called.

    evidence and reports… it’s IRAQ 03 all over again…
    be careful… be ready…
    gotta stop ‘em…

If Bubble Boy Bush attacks Iran… US gasoline will go to 7 bucks a gallon. The Shia will attack and topple every (US allied) Sunni nation in the Middle East… But maybe they’ll only surge 500k Iranians into Iraq. Were being led by an idiot….

  18. GSD says:

Cheney just showed the editors and the owners the contents of manilla envelopes with each of their names on them.

    They quickly withdrew the suit.

I cannot believe this! Yes, they are a newspaper for ‘crap’s sake’. They are supposed to fight for information and for freedom. OUR FREEDOM – which seems to not be worth fighting for at the Post.

  22. Mr. Evil says:

Let’s see… compromising photos of an editor with a prostitute? Maybe photos of a high upper at the Washington Post with a boy? True or not, maybe threat of an intense IRS audit of all involved? Maybe all of the above? I find it amazing no one has the guts to stand up to that fat little penguin Dick(head) Cheney except a doctor on the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina when Cheney was there for a photo op. And he said to Cheney “go fuck yourself.”

One man, huge pair, right on the mark. One large influential newspaper, no balls at all, spineless pussies.

  23. Mr. Evil says:

Every time you hear Bush and/or Cheney speak or act you are witnessing an unbridled organized crime syndicate like you’ve never seen before.

I find it totally amazing that two rich, spoiled, sanctimonious, delusional, sycophants can literally get away with intimidation, racketeering, witness tampering, deception, outright lies, favoritism, torture and a plethora of other misdeeds. And Bill Clinton was impeached for trying to hide a blow job. Maybe that’s what George and Dick need, a good blow job. Someone call Jeff Gannon.

Cheney`s handlers put some pressure on the Post, or Cheney and his handlers just bought the newspaper outright to keep it quiet.

Must be some ver interesting logs to be sure.

  27. veritas says:

They’ve obviously been either blackmailed or paid off to keep their traps shut since if those logs are made public, the people will get to see precisely who the “key players” really are. Someone recently mentioned that there were men who “entered late at night but didn’t exit until morning”….what’s up with that?

  28. veritas says:

#9 you need to read “THE NEW PEARL HARBOR” by David Ray Griffin and then ‘BUSH ON THE COUCH” By Justin A. Frank, M.D. to get a realistic (and very frightening) perspective on what occurred, why, and how. Connecting the dots is the beginning because they are all there if one is not in a self-blinding mode of denial and desires to learn the truth. They say that often “the truth is ugly” but I say “the truth will set you free” and God knows that this country is ready for some truth – something which has become a very rare anomaly over the past 6 years!!

It is only through the unveiling of truth (that which really occurred and, of course, there is only ONE truth, realistically – the rest is half truth, twisted truth, and downright lies) that the american people can begin the resurrection process – the taking back of this democracy by the people from the reichwing christofascists who have all but hijacked it.

Your ability to SEE the complexity of what is happening to our country with a sense of calm, mature reserve…

…makes me feel ashamed that I am unable to disregard my “lying eyes” and adopt your sage acceptance that what I SEE isn’t quite what it is…

    You’re the IDIOT who’ll be writing/carrying out suicide notes/pacts…

…when you finally open your eyes to see…

…that all the horsesh*t you’ve been fed about patriotism and integrity of your fearless leaders…

    …was all a hoax…

…You’re being robbed along with the rest of us…

…unless of course you’re helping to pull off the robbery…

  33. Liberal in New Mexico says:

WELL THEN, WHO IS GOING TO DEMAND THESE DOCUMENTS? At the very least, this item needs to be brought out into the open and made painfully clear and obvious to the public. Is this inquiry going to be made part of the ongoing investigation by the federal prosecutor in the CIA outing scandal? Well, is it? I want to find that out. (Man – Am I in a bad mood today, or what?) F- B-s!

  34. Shawn says:

Something weird happened here…they were literally at the endline of this lawsuit. Cheney was using up some of his last appeals on this one. Let’s hope CREW (http://www.citizensforethics.org) is taking this one…maybe we should all donate some cash to her organization and follow up with them. They seem to be more open to go after this Administration than anybody lately.

  35. Earthling says:

Cheney didn’t want anyone to see how often Jeff Gannon visited his home. Gay must run in that family. Like father like daughter.
