A study released today by the Congressional Budget Office shows that the real troop increase associated with President Bush’s escalation policy could be as high as 48,000, more than double the 21,500 soldiers that Bush has claimed.
As DefenseTech notes, extra forces are expected because the combat units being sent into Iraq “need to be backed up by support troops, ‘including personnel to staff headquarters, serve as military police, and provide communications, contracting, engineering, intelligence, medical, and other services.’” The CBO’s low estimate envisions at least 15,000 additional support personnel. The alternative scenario “would require about 28,000 support troops in addition to the 20,000 combat troops.”
Additionally, the cost of the escalation could be as much as five times higher than White House estimates:
According to the study, the costs for the “surge” would also be dramatically different than the President has said. The White House estimated a troop escalation would require about $5.6 billion in additional funding, the CBO now believes “that costs would range from $9 billion to $13 billion for a four-month deployment and from $20 billion to $27 billion for a 12-month deployment, depending upon the total number of troops deployed.”
Read the full CBO report HERE.
UPDATE: A release from Rep. John Spratt’s (D-SC) office notes that the CBO report also predicts addition burdens on U.S. forces:
An average of 170,000 military personnel has been maintained in the Iraq theater of operations, and this high deployment level has taken a toll. Last year, CBO reported that the Department of Defense had reduced the amount of ‘dwell’ time for many troops from two years to one year in order to sustain troop levels. ‘Dwell’ time is the time troops spend in training at bases in the United States while living with their families. CBO questioned whether such a high pace of operations was sustainable over the long term. The President’s proposal will increase this level to above 200,000 troops, and to reach this level, the Pentagon will probably have to relax ‘dwell’ time standards even more.

No! The President couldn’t have lied to us!

February 1st, 2007 at 1:55 pmJust saw this on Buzzflash. Leave to Chimpy to lie about everything.
What I’d like to know is: where the hell does he expect to get this many troops? The Joint Chiefs of Staff have gone on record as saying that there are only 9,000 or so available, tops. Where’s Chimpy going to get the rest? Does the Pentagon have a secret cloning lab? Or perhaps these troops are only as real as the fictional troops Hitler ordered to protect Berlin during the last days of the Third Reich. Or maybe…our government will try expanding its military some other way…
Close the door…I feel a draft.

I’m sure Bush knows better than his generals on battle plans and fighting a war and Petraeus (a fine and able man) is happy to pick up a 4th star.

“S” - those of us who truly understand, and are trying… but are we even having an impact at all? It gets so very discouraging, day in and day out, as we seem to have no voice whatsoever - WE THE PEOPLE, seem to have such little say with our government. What’s it going to take for them to start listening to the will of the people?
February 1st, 2007 at 3:00 pmComment by troll alert — February 1, 2007 @ 1:58 pm…you are blowing this war way out of proportion and taking only pretexts of conversations as well as selected film clips and are using them and doctoring them to suit your purpose…
Blowing a war out of proportion? Any “proportion” of war is bad. Even the smallest. Selected film clips? Doctoring them to suit your purpose? You’re talking about Bush, Cheney and the entire Republican party now.
When you civilians come to visit us, we look at you like you are from outer space or something. You have been brainwashed…You leeches…
Way to get people to come to your side and understand where you’re coming from. Sorry to say, dear, it is you who have been brainwashed. Leeches? There you go talking about Bush, Cheney and the entire Republican party again.
Because to you civilians, that`s all a war is as far as you know. -Just like a video game- most keyboard commandos around here assume I expect.
I suspect the “keyboard commando” is you and that in truth you are not in the military. Just like Bush, Cheney and the rest of the Republicans. We “civilians” hate this war and what it’s doing to our country.
Their have been great accomplishments come to pass in Iraq.
You only dwell on the negative.
Really? What are they? Do tell.
There is a war on you know?
With live bullets?
People die.
Relax.
Talk about yellow journalism.
Again, we already know the Fox Noise Channel is nothing more than yellow journalism, but thank you for your clarification. As far as you telling us about the war you’re apparently so proud of, with its live bullets, and dead people, and your suggestion that we “relax,” well relaxation is not something we can do right now is it? Unless, of course, you’re George W. Bush who seems to have done nothing but relax and take vacations since he stole the presidency, twice. So why don’t you relax your fingers and keep them off the keyboard and away from this progressive website. You have no business being here.

Oh please, we spent billions on reconstruction;
The U.S reconstruction push in Iraq is winding down. About $18 billion in funding that Congress approved three years ago was supposed to be spent or committed to specific projects by the end of September
And this;
Violent intimidation also stopped another project — a state-of-the-art children’s hospital in which first lady Laura Bush had taken a personal interest.
The project, in Basra, was supposed to cost $50 million. The U.S. Agency for International Development assigned Bechtel the job in August 2004, with a completion date of Dec. 31, 2005. But Bechtel later warned its government supervisors that the hospital would take far more money and time to complete. The project was suspended this summer. Bechtel says the hospital now would cost $98 million

Ostriches with their heads in the sand… What they can’t see, can’t possibly exist. Sad.
I remember watching the news growing up. In middle school, I used to watch 20/20 and 60 Minutes with my parents. Today, none of my students watch the news (though they’ve developed a strange fascination with necrophelia this week…). And if I suggest they read something, they act as if I’ve just recommended they set their own head on fire… I worry about our future.
February 1st, 2007 at 3:45 pmThe troop “surge” is not about Iraq, it’s about IRAN. We are staging our invasion. When are people going to start talking about what’s REALLY going on here?

Very few kids read anymore - I am a lucky Mom, mine read, watch the news with me (although that has gone downhill a bit lately as when MSM gives us their talking points of the day, I have to shut ioff the tv). But we do this together, as a family, discuss it… and because of this, they sure know a lot more about what is going on in the world than their peers. I wonder and worry, too.

February 1st, 2007 at 4:16 pmTHE TRUTH ABOUT IRAQ
The human community must wake up. The sufferings of the Iraqi people are tragic and criminal. Whole cities are under siege: Fallujah, Sammara, Kirkuk, Haditha, Hit, Ramadi. Latifiyah, Tarmiyah, Baaquba, Moqdadiyah, Buhruz, Madaen, Abualkhasib, Al-Zubeir, Fahamma, Tel Afar, Husaiba …
The attacks aim to stop the spreading resistance to occupation. Now the resistance is everywhere: in the north, middle and the south. It encompasses all the Iraqi populations: Arabs, Shias, Sunnis, Turkomen, seculars, Kurds, Assyrians and other Christians, and Sabbits and Yaziids.
The occupation has no future in Iraq. Though defeated, the occupation refuses to accept its defeat until it has tried all. It seems the US administration thinks a civil war will save its reputation and plans.
February 1st, 2007 at 4:27 pmCan we call it escalation now please?

Thanks… I’m trying. I left Corporate America to try to do something. Some battles I win, and some I don’t. But I just hope I’ve planted some seeds. It’s been difficult because, as you mentioned, parents don’t seem to be raising their children. Instead, the kids are the ones who are running the show at home.
So many are failing, 13 out of 22 in my daugther’s social studies (6th grade) class, for example, and no one seems to care except the teachers.
That’s terrible! And to make it worse - teachers are being forced to teach from an outdated curriculum that is utterly irrelevent to the students. No wonder the kids are tuning it out.

Among characteristics are a strong belief that the leader is infallible or close to infallible, a desire to filter out any information or facts which tend to counter the first view, an emotional disregard for anyone questioning the cult or the leader, and the tendency to view people not in the cult as somehow less than human. The cultist also tends to worship authority and has low self-esteem.
February 1st, 2007 at 5:39 pmBluedog, I apologize if in any way my previous comment inferred I did not believe you or was trying to make light of your analysis of cult tendencies and characterististics. Frankly I am completely with you on this one. I am just constantly astounded by what some of these people say, no matter how much I have read from them. It’s actually very alarming!
February 1st, 2007 at 5:43 pmAnyone on this site ever been to Iraq??? Anyone get their headlines from somewhere other than CNN? Can anyone tell me why you cannot support the war in Iraq and not the president?
February 1st, 2007 at 5:48 pmThe Bush cultist asks: “Can anyone tell me why you cannot support the war in Iraq and not the president?”
A sane person responds:
The war was based on lies.
The war does not enhance our national security.
The war does not make the world safer.
The war actually makes things worse in the Middle East.
The war is an opportunity for war profiteers.
There is no clear achievable goal with the war.
The war is fighting the wrong enemy.
The people are overwhelmingly against the war.
The troops don’t understand the mission.
The troops can’t tell friendlies from hostiles.
Listen, Bush cultist, I’m sure others can go on with this list, but it’s getting tiring for me because I know I’m directing this to a cultist and might as well be speaking to a concrete outhouse.
February 1st, 2007 at 5:54 pmMy post disappeared, again… and I have no idea why. What did I say wrong now? What I just said has to be the most innocous thing I have said all day or close to it.
The post that disappeared reiterated that I was not making light of your comment bluedog. I tend to agree with you. Sorry if it came off sounding any other way.
February 1st, 2007 at 5:56 pmBluedog49 : Since this is my first time ever posting here, I’m wondering what makes you the authority on my political tendencies? I know how little kids are usually afraid of things they don’t undertand… so the obvious question is “does your mom know you’re on her computer?”
February 1st, 2007 at 5:58 pmYou can call me whatever you wish… doesn’t change facts like I’ve been to Iraq, and I’d be suprised if you could find it on a globe.
phantasyman, you are assuming that I haven’t been to Iraq. I suggest you go to the site for Iraq and Afganistan Veterans of America (IAVA) and see how veterans feel about things like the war and who supports the troops. It might be illuminating for you.
February 1st, 2007 at 6:03 pmAnd, phantasyman, if I have mistakenly made you as a member of the Cult of Bush, sorry and good for you. I like it when Americans think for themselves and don’t rely on a cult leader to tell them what to think.
February 1st, 2007 at 6:05 pm“Does your mom know you’re on the computer?”
Man, that would be great news for me if she did. She died in 1984.
February 1st, 2007 at 6:07 pmPhantasyman - while you were in Iraq did you happen to find any WMD? If not, then you’ve discovered one of the reasons people don’t support the war or bush.
February 1st, 2007 at 6:07 pmThe Bush cultist asks: “Can anyone tell me why you cannot support the war in Iraq and not the president?â€
A sane person responds:
The war was based on lies.
February 1st, 2007 at 6:08 pmTold by your president (Clinton)… amongst others
The war does not enhance our national security.
Really??? Any more attacks since 9/11??
The war does not make the world safer.
“We are not the world’s police…” Ted Kennedy
The war actually makes things worse in the Middle East.
Displacing an evil dictatorship… the horror!!
The war is an opportunity for war profiteers.
They weren’t war profiteers when Clinton hired them, funny how that works
There is no clear achievable goal with the war.
It only takes 9 letters “A FREE IRAQ”
The war is fighting the wrong enemy.
Which enemy is the right one then oh mighty leader
The people are overwhelmingly against the war.
Which people, you mean the democrats? Duh, they have to be! They don’t have a choice
The troops don’t understand the mission.
I understand it just fine… thanks for speaking for me
The troops can’t tell friendlies from hostiles.
Wasn’t very hard…
Listen, Bush cultist, I’m sure others can go on with this list, but it’s getting tiring for me because I know I’m directing this to a cultist and might as well be speaking to a concrete outhouse.
#89 How mant machine guns, hand grenades, and other explosives does it take to constitute a WMD? When my best friend Brian got sent home in 3 pieces… I’d say that’s massive enough destruction, wouldn’t you?
February 1st, 2007 at 6:10 pmAnd b4 you guys go on some rant about how I’m a Bush supporter… I also supported Clinton. I just know facts when I see them. I see republicans supporting Repub presidents, and Dem’s supporting Dem. Presidents. Presidents do what’s best for their party, not the people. If you believe otherwise, you are fools.
February 1st, 2007 at 6:13 pmbluedog… Sorry about the mom coment… I thought you were attacking me for asking simple questions, so I responded accordingly…
February 1st, 2007 at 6:15 pmThank you phantasyman, for confirming my first impression about you. You are a Bush cultist. You have repeated the standard cult-approved dogma. You get bonus points mentioning Clinton and acting like he has anything to do with all of this. By the way, the first WTC attack happened 30 days into Clinton’s presidency and there were no more attacks on our soil for the next 8 years. So, by your own argument, Clinton was more successful at fighting terrorism than your cult leader. See, that’s what happens when you tie yourself to cult dogma. You tend to make other peoples arguments for them without realizing it.
February 1st, 2007 at 6:15 pmThe Bush cultist equivocates and hysterically backs himself into a corner: “hey you guys, I supported Clinton, you know.”
Riiiiggghhht!
February 1st, 2007 at 6:16 pmphantasyman, no offense taken on the MOM thing. Have you gone over to IAVA to see what your fellow vets think yet?
February 1st, 2007 at 6:18 pmBluedog… So you’re saying Clinton is completely innocent? Funny, you sounded a lot smarter in some of your other posts…
February 1st, 2007 at 6:20 pmphantasyman, your cult leader was specific about WMD’s and machine guns were not part of the list. Remember? It was nuclear weapons, chemical weapons, unmanned drones capable of hitting our east coast, etc. No hand granades and no machine guns were part of the pitch.
February 1st, 2007 at 6:20 pmPhantasyman, I’m sorry to hear about your friend, niether of you should have been there to begin with. I don’t believe the weapons of which you speak are the weapons we were told Iraq possessed and threatened our national security, were they? If they are, then we’ll have to go after a very large part of the planet.
February 1st, 2007 at 6:22 pmBluedog… I’ve been to sites that offer plenty of opinions on wars. I have my own opinions formulated on my experiences and usually keep them to myself. When they say that all the political bickering is hurting troop morale, they’re right. But it’s when they get home that it really hurts. Who wants to come home and hear that they killed people for nothing, or for the wrong reasons, or because someone lied? Or that their friends were killed for those same wrong reasons. I don’t like Bush, but I don’t hate him. He made a decision and stood by it. If you served in the military then you know what’s at stake when you don’t stand behind promises, keep your word, reiterate your decisions.
February 1st, 2007 at 6:26 pmPhantasyman: “So you’re saying Clinton is completely innocent?”
As far as this war in Iraq is concerned, yes. Clinton or Gore, for that matter, would have never invaded Iraq and you know it. The record shows that Clinton’s main obsession at the time he left office was al Qaeda and specifically Osama bin laden. Iraq has nothing to do with that.
February 1st, 2007 at 6:27 pmyou guys are right about what kind of weapons define WMD. But what you don’t seem to understand is that there are thousands of decent Iraqi people that thank us. That pray for us. That take us into their homes and “break bread” with us. that know that their children will be well served by what we do for them…
February 1st, 2007 at 6:28 pmAnd Clinton failed at getting Bin Ladin, just like the rest of the freedom loving world. I was only in highschool at the time, but didn’t Clinton send a few cruise missle into Baghdad… or am I confusing that with somewhere else?
February 1st, 2007 at 6:31 pmI’d love to stick around and see what is taking this thread so long to update and why those last few comments are over an hour into the future… but alas, duty calls. Bluedog, I think we have some knowledge and experiences that would be beneficial for both of us to share with one another. Quadrajet, I thank you for your sympathy… I hope I can catch up with you 2 some other time. Until then….
February 1st, 2007 at 6:43 pmphantasyman, I am glad that thousands of Iraqis liked us, but please. What is an Iraqi supposed to say to a heavily armed American soldier? But, let’s be honest. How will Kurdish and Sunni children be served by installing a Shiite theocratic republic?
And yes, Clinton fired cruise missles into Bagdad in an attempt to destroy what he was told was a remnant of their nuclear program. He also fired cruise missles into Afganistan in an attempt to kill bin Laden. But, he had absolutely nothing to do with the invasion of Iraq. He was against it. No, I’m afraid your guy Bush has to take responsibility for this one. It was all his baby.
February 1st, 2007 at 6:44 pmOK, phantasyman, I apologize for calling you a “Bush Cultist.” You’ve been reasonable and polite, which is not the bush cultist MO. Thank you for your discussion and especially for your service.
February 1st, 2007 at 6:46 pmThis doesn’t mean that Bush lied to us, does it?
February 1st, 2007 at 6:48 pmPhantasyman, I’m sure that there are those in Iraq who do exactly as you say and are greatful, but again, that is not the reason we were given for our involvement there.
Who wants to come home and hear that they killed people for nothing, or for the wrong reasons, or because someone lied? Or that their friends were killed for those same wrong reasons.
No one does and I understand your anger - but I think you’re directing that anger at the wrong people.
February 1st, 2007 at 6:51 pm#105 - Correct me if I’m wrong Bluedog, but didn’t the republicans accused Clinton of ‘wagging the dog’ when he launched those attacks.
February 1st, 2007 at 6:58 pmSee the AEI PNAC plan was supposed to actually bring democracy to Iraq, Hearts Terrorists, Instead its a great big fiasco that has indebted you, and your children, (when and if you ever you grow up) for decades to come. Trillions.
But what happened was that this think tank experiment, brought to us by chickenhawk college trained idjuts, was a bad plan. Instead of freeing the oppressed Bush has now freed the very terrorists he meant to help.
Now, it’s a bigger quagmire than ever and I am reminded of that commercial where they are sitting around the Table and King Arthur is looking for answers. One guy puts a huge bag of gold on the table. King Arthur then asks “Your not planning on throwing money at the problem are you?”
Bechtel has pulled out, projects and schools will not be finished, the factories will not open, the electricity still doesn’t work, and yet they are gonna throw more money, and troops, at the problem.
What a plan. Stay the Course!! Yet the freepers, who cry about taxes, and want to see min wage abolished, will keep sending the terrorists all their hard earned dough!!
Genius I tell you!!
Now the Democrats (I am not one nor Republican) Are gonna let George and Dick have their war, laying the blame squarely where it belongs, then the GOP will be going glub blub blub as their ship sinks, and you cannot save them.
And the fact of the matter is people don’t wish Iraq to be a failure, the current administration has done that all by themselves. GOP Heart Failure.
But keep on yapping and trying to accuse me of being who I am not Rachel/Joanie/Stryker/ ad nauseum. You are truly funny to watch flop around. Like two seagulls battling for a dead fish on the sand.
Fighting yourself of course. =) And the more you battle yourself Joanie/Stryker/Rachel the more insane you shall become. Eventually troll alert it will seem as if you are dematerializing and coming completely apart matter seperating from the light. Your thoughts will be thrown far and wide scattered into the aether, and you will think of suicide. You will go stark raving mad.
But do keep guessing and continuing your Sybil rants.!! Bwhahahahaa!
February 1st, 2007 at 7:02 pmI hope I can catch up with you 2 some other time. Until then….
Comment by phantasyman — February 1, 2007 @ 6:43 pm
Likewise Phantasyman, take care. Gotta run myself, I’ve already commented an hour from now and don’t seem to have accomplished everything I intended to do before then.
February 1st, 2007 at 7:08 pmQuadrajet, your memory is good. Yes, repubs accused Clinton of trying to change the subject from the important topic of bj’s to the unimportant topic of fighting terrorism. Never mind that the author of Wag the Dog said his inspiration was Reagan’s invasion of Granada to take the heat off of him for losing 243 Marines in Beruit.
February 1st, 2007 at 7:20 pmi was worried about whether the colts were going to win this weekend, when i reminded myself of some good advice i had recently been given by an angel named ‘troll alert’: “People die. Relax.”
February 1st, 2007 at 8:11 pmthank you.

troll alert is as much of a military person in Iraq as my cat… Considering the horror stories from the troops themselves, there’s no way this person is there in an enlisted capacity. None.
Comment by unbelievable — February 1, 2007 @ 2:56 pm
You’re right of course UB, there’s no way this fool is anywhere near Iraq. If troll alert is having a difficult time finding the death and destruction there, perhaps he/she/it should look to the east, the west, the south and somewhat north of the green zone. It’s “People die, relax” comment was classic rummy.
February 1st, 2007 at 8:12 pm#39 - can’t help but agree, sadly enough. “Deal or No Deal” and “American Idol” are just so much more important than the future of our country - and the world. It’s pathetic.
While our soldiers (and many, many others) are dying due to the neglience of the American people, in facing the realities and TRUTH of this war.
February 1st, 2007 at 8:12 pmThe Last Chance, The Last Best Hope for Victory
Today’s Armed Services Comm hearing with Gen. Casey is on C-SPAN right night. He’s slick with his answers. Surprised? He is in large part responsible for the disaster in Iraq, and he will be rewarded with a new top position.
The only good thing about these hearings is watching the GOP Bush lapdogs blame Casey for everything that has gone wrong. Sen. Lindsay Graham’s new mantra is “last chance” and “last best hope for victory.” Watch Mitch McConnell and other GOP Senators beat this phrase to death in the upcoming Senate debate on Iraq.
Now we find out that Bush lied again. Double the number of troops in the “surge” and double / triple / quadruple or whatever the projected costs for the “surge.” With no promise of success. Deeper into the pit we go.
February 1st, 2007 at 9:57 pmPhantasyman,
How about some details on when and where you served? And how do you feel about Bush and the Republican-controlled 109th Congress cutting the VA budget and leaving it short a couple billion dollars? How do you like that they cut the funding in half for veterans’ head trauma research and treatment? Not like that’s anything really important, eh? The Republican chair of the House Veterans Affairs committee last year decided to stop letting veterans service organizations like the VFW, American Legion, and DAV come in and testify before the VA budget was drawn up. It was common practice and common courtesy for years, but Rep. Buyer decided to put a stop to it. Okay by you? How about you go check out this site http://www.veteransforamerica.org/print_blog.cfm?bID=1212 and see how the Democrats and Republicans compare when it comes to REALLY supporting the troops. This president and the Republicans in Congress are the most anti-veteran and anti-troop that this country has ever seen.
If you’re dumb enough to think that Bush is doing right by you, that he isn’t just throwing bodies into the meat grinder to save himself from the shame of admitting he was wrong, I feel sorry for you. I hope you get a clue before you get your ass shot off, but maybe that’s what it’ll take to wake you up.
February 1st, 2007 at 11:37 pmYou will go *stark raving mad.

Have you ever seen the image of a man, perfectly etched in the sand?
Have you ever attempted to touch the image no matter how timid?
Only to find out that the image was that of a man who had been burned into the sand in a firestorm that was so hot it melted the sand and made it into etched natural glass?
The image was preserved so realistically.

It was a man.
