Concerns over Iran bombing grow.

Concerns over Iran bombing grow.

U.S. News: “Democrats on Capitol Hill are increasingly concerned that President Bush will order air strikes against targets in Iran in the next few months or even weeks. … [T]hey suspect Bush will order the bombing of Iranian supply routes, camps, training facilities, and other sites that Administration officials say contribute to American losses in Iraq. Under this scenario, Bush would not invade Iran with ground forces or zero in on Iranian nuclear facilities. But under the limited-bombing scenario, Bush could ask for a congressional vote of support…which many Democrats would feel obliged to endorse or risk looking like they weren’t supportive of the troops.”

  2. Eric Jaffa says:

It is supporting the troops to stop Bush from giving them another enemy.

Congress must stop Bush from starting a war with Iran.

  3. Roger_Roger says:

If Bush asks for a vote on attacking Iran and the Dem vote yes, they will forever be the party of pussy’s. What are they good for if they can’t even vote there mind?

  4. Grand Moff Texan says:

Once again, the troops are only political hostages to the Republicans.

Put them in harm’s way, and if anyone objects, claim we must want them to die in harm’s way. I guess that makes a kind of sense … in the trailer park.

  7. TerrytheTurtle says:

What makes you think Chimpy, or his Organ Grinder will ask for a vote, Roger Rabbit?

“They can’t stop us” – Organ Grinder Cheney.

  8. Kevin says:

Iran started the war by supplying the insurgents. The President of Iran has called for the destruction of Israel and the US. Will it take a Nuke to go off on in a public market in Israel before you want to act? Or maybe you will wait till they set one off in the US.

  9. JJF says:

Bush could ask for a congressional vote of support…

Don’t expect it. He’d love to embarass a few Dems, but he wouldn’t risk not getting the OK. This is not Oct 2002 and he’s no longer flying high in the polls post-9/11. He’ll just do it and claim he has the authority as CinC.

The appropriate Dem and Congressional response should be impeachment.

    Make it preemptive.

  10. Lisa W says:

Would the House please stand up and begin impeachment proceedings? Please? For the sake of our country. Please? Here’s some testosterone for gonadal growth enhancement.

I think they’d like the challenge of Impeachment. They seem to be ASKING for it.

Uh oh! Look out, Kevin’s playing the “mushroom cloud” card – as if bombing Iran would DECREASE that possibility? Surely you jest. They’re still 5-10 years away from bomb-grade material, little chap!

  14. SouthWest Bob says:

If bush asks congress for support of “limited bombing” to support the troops, the response, should be; “Only after you’ve exhausted every possible means and avenue in direct negotiations with Iran to the point of using the UN as a mediator. Otherwise, NO.”

  15. TerrytheTurtle says:

Wake – stop calling Kevin ’shirley’, I know it suits him but that’s not important right now…

  16. Tom3 says:

Dems are going to vote for this? Bunch of goddamned wussies.

I voted Dem so they would vote AGAINST an Iran war.

  17. JJF says:

Kevin, Iran is years and years away from getting a nuke. Probably more than a decade. There are plenty of ways to stop it from happening. Bombing them won’t help, and it will only confirm their suspicions that they need a nuke in the first place.

A nuke going off in a public market in Israel? What kind of comic books have you been reading?

  18. Tom - Daai Tou Laam says:

Bombing of supply trails in a country that is not part of the conflict in order to widen the scope of the war? I think this storyline was confirmed as illegal bombing 35 years ago.

Oh and look at this poster. Like you are really able to do anything.
If spouting off like this makes you fell better then fine.

But do you REALLY think you can stop Bush or Cheney?
The bigger question being this one, why would you want to?

The jig is up. Listen to your pathetic self. Okay the jig is up and we ARE going to bomb the Iranians back to the stoneage.

What are you going to do now?

Except listen to yourself type into a TP blank screen.

You cannot make a difference. Why even try?

Let`s wait until the bombs start falling then I will wait with keen interest for your impeachment proceedings that WILL NEVER HAPPEN to begin.

Again, if it makes you fell better typing into a blank screen here at TP, then by all means go ahead.

But it will make no diffreence I assure you. The jig has BEEN UPP since 2000.

Where in the hell have you been anyway?

    Prison?

Or more fitting, a PSYCHO NUT WARD?

  20. Tom3 says:

I see Kevin the Fascist Repuke Troll is playing the Mushroom Cloud card like a good little Chimpylover. What an idiot.

Iran is 10 years away from a bomb. Even their little experimental program isn’t making any high-grade isotopes.

Chimpy doesn’t need an OK from Congress to bomb Iran. IIRC, the War Powers Act gives him 30 days to bomb them into the Stone Age.

  21. Tom3 says:

Kevin is a hit and run Repuke troll. He’s probably on the next blog by now. I think Rove pays him by the post.

Something you democrats ought to study up on.

  23. Tom3 says:

Angel Hair is right. The United States of America ceased to exist when Chimpy fixed the 2000 election and then had the Supremes appoint him unconstitutionally.

We needed to overrun the Capitol with ten million people in January 2001 and stop the first Chimpy inauguration. But we didn’t.

Americans are too fat, dumb and happy to stand up for our rights. So we lost em. USA 1789-2000 RIP.

  25. Kevin says:

I don’t get paid to post on this site.

  26. jaimie t says:

Don’t you think that the House Dems and up-for-relection Senate Pubs would hold serious hearings on the “vote of support” whether it comes before or after the bombing? Do you think that the Congress will let bad “intel” and worse guesses rule the day again? Bush will never risk House hearings when we know that a whole list of witnesses including military will testify to the increased danger to our troops in Iraq. And of course it would be the death knell for what little of the Coalition remains; Blair would be forced to publically condemn Bush and/or resign. Plus there goes any European Union support on Iranian nukes. Unless you believe that BushCheney are willing to stick a final dagger in the back of the Publicans then it seems a very long shot for Bush to escalate to that point for no real gain. Limited bombing will either lead to a full blown hot war with Iran or Iran’s getting the bomb on Bush’s watch. Either would ruin the Publicans for a decade.

  27. Tom3 says:

Kevin, you’re a Repuke. That means yu’re a liar. So I wouldn’t doubt Rove is paying you…in money or blowjobs.

  28. b says:

I think Chirac was right – even if the Iranians get the bomb they couldn’t ever use it. Israel would raze Iran before the dust settled from Iran’s first strike.

  29. Kevin says:

Comment by I Love All Wars

EARTH TO NEOCON: Our Military is BROKEN. Our National Guard is BROKEN. We’re going BROKE over this tragedy in Iraq.

A re-deployment in 10-15 years would actually be MORE cost effective, assuming we can pay off the incredible financial toll this “war” will have in the near future.

  31. Maeven says:

If Bush asks for a vote on attacking Iran and the Dem vote yes, they will forever be the party of pussy’s. What are they good for if they can’t even vote there mind?

There won’t be a vote. Bush has already indicated that his presidency is a “unitary executive” (which means, for all intents and purposes, it’s a monarchy) and doesn’t need an affirmation by Congress to “protect and defend the U.S.”

Democrats, in spite of being in the majority, have no ability to prevent Bush from doing anything. It’s Republicans in Congress who need to break with this administration. They’re the ones who are protecting Bush and Cheney and keeping both the war in Iraq continuing and emboldening Bush to expand the conflict throughout the entire Middle East region.

The only way to prevent Bush from attacking Iran is for Republicans to inform Bush that they will lead an impeachment inquiry and remove him and Cheney from office.

I wouldn’t count on that happening. The Republicans in Congress are still firmly in Bush’s and Cheney’s back pocket, they support him and his policies. What they are hearing from Rove is that the problem is the people, the voters, and that if we can be “properly informed” (propagandized), we’ll be back on board with Bush-Cheney and the GOP. As they see it, they have two years to plow through their agenda, and that includes ramping up their disinformation campaign and media consolidation.

If you want to make a difference, hit the streets and protest. Storm the Capitol, flood your Senators and Congressmen and women with phone calls and mail (snail and email both), and demand action now. Don’t wait for others to do it or to tell you what to do. Set aside an hour every day to do nothing but confront your government representatives. Every day.

  33. Abby says:

I don’t envy the Democrats. They want to profit from the “war”, get the troops out of harm’s way in a “war” long lost and torn between saving this country or their place at the top of the food chain. We all know what they will work towards saving.

Given the above, is it any wonder that a non-binding resolution is the best they will do?

That was the substance of todays Johnny Letter to my Republican Representatives. They must take a stand against the wayward, in over his head Commander (gulp) in Chief.

At least in the weeks before the mid-term elections, they were back campaigning in their districts and had contact with their unhappy constituents. They could try to deny that the complaints of their constitutuents wouldn’t change the balance of power in Congress until the election results were counted and they saw themselves in the minority. But the human mind is a miraculous organ – we’re given “denial” for a purpose: To shield us from painful news.

Their shock was short-lived, and now that they’re back in Washington, back in the warm bosom of Congress (which is really just a great echo-chamber), they really don’t hear contradictory views to their own opinions. What they do hear, what they get in spades, is the Bush-Cheney propaganda machine, led by Rove and the White House communications group, with talking points like “go against this president and you’re emboldening the enemy.” Democrats are in that echo chamber, too, and aren’t challenging it either, but for very different reasons.

The only way that I see to prevent Bush from pouring gasoline on an already out-of-control situation in the Middle East is for the American people to hit the bricks and walk into their Senators and Congressmen and women’s offices (by mail or in person) and demand action against this administration.

I assume you meant Iran and not Iraq.

A censure is the equivalent of a group “tsk, tsk.” A censure has no force of law, to prevent an action by Bush.

Try to imagine a 3-year-old child at a black tie, sit-down dinner at an embassy. Do you think that at the sight of the 3-year-old eating off of his and other people’s dinner plates with his hands, if all of the grown-up guests turned away and “tsk-tsk”-ed at the child’s manners, that would have any effect on the child’s behavior?

Bush doesn’t care if he’s censured.

  50. wake-n-bake says:

Do you think America is a peace loving country?

Well, based on the lyrics to our National Anthem, I’d say NO.

but I often wonder, the way we claim Godliness, yet can’t wait to wup someone’s ass if they look at us the wrong way, or take our parking space, or cut us off in traffic, etc.

…and peace is regarded as a “dirty, hippie” word or flaky concept by most Conservatives.

So, although you may THINK that, the majority of the World DOES NOT.

That (Bush distinction) is a little too nuanced for this liberal.

I think it’s the Iraqis who get to identify who is what, and from their point of view, we Americans fit all all of those terms (invaders, occupiers, foreigners). But one thing that we are not: Trusted friends or allies.

Well said. Although, if there are no Iraqis left to define us, do we then default back to being “welcomed liberators”? I guess that’s the whole “history is written by the victor” thing that Hitler was so excited about.

I understand the concept but am forced to wonder, who is Victor?

    Good night free thinkers…

  56. Ranger Jay says:

If you’ll check, you’ll find that the U.S. has been diverting a LOT of firepower to the waters in that area (Iraq, Iran, etc.).

I mean a LOT. This buildup is still going on. Once all the pieces are in place, Bush will be ready to play another game of what he likes to call, “Commander in Chief.”

He’ll put on his cute little jacket, and pretend that he knows something about the military, and then order air strikes out the wazoo. If Iran tries to strike one of our naval vessels, that will trigger a wipeout of whatever air and naval forces Iran has on hand.

Then it will get very, very, messy in a hurry.

Of course, all of this buildup could just be a “bluff.” And I’m sure that Iran will accede to the ridiculous demands of Condiscending Rice that Iran immediately halt their entire nuclear program, crawl on their hands and knees before the U.N., and beg for mercy, and maybe we’ll talk to them on a diplomatic level when we damn well feel like it. And I’m sure that the additional troops will not spark any more unrest in that region.

Then again, monkeys might fly out of my butt.

  57. s says:

BULL………I CAN NOT BELIEVE THEY ARE STILL SAYING THIS. DEMOCRATS DON’T WANT TO “LOOK” LIKE THEY AREN’T SUPPORTING THE TROOPS.

WE ARE PAST HOW THINGS “LOOK” HOW ABOUT HOW THINGS “ARE?”

BULL TO THIS DEMOCRATIC WEAKNESS. This has to stop. It is time to act regardless of how anything seems…looks….may be construed…..etc etc etc.

The fact is the war must be stopped and the Iran war must not start. PERIOD. AND ….NOW

I must say, the Republican Political Strategy is excellent. Filibuster everything. Drag your feet and protest every miniscule semantic in a non-binding resolution while the Commander-in-Chief sends multiple carrier groups into the Persian Gulf.

Use ever increasing rhetoric against Iran.

Bomb targets inside a sovereign nation.

If Iran attempts to defend itself, or reacts in any way militarily, bomb them back to the stone age:

The USS Enterprise aircraft carrier strike group is outside the Persian Gulf, in the Arabian Sea, within striking distance of Iran and Afghanistan.

The USS Eisenhower aircraft carrier strike group is in the Persian Gulf.

The USS Stennis aircraft carrier strike group is on its way to the Persian Gulf.

Yeah and I would lke to see lots of confirmation that Iran is actually meddling in Iraq. And more convincing by miles than the last presentation by Powell. Last time I checked, there was no need at all to do so – because Maliki essentially _is_ Iran and he gets money and weapons directly from the source, thank you very much. Faking a casus belli again? It’s a time-honored tradition.

  103. chuck says:

Iran started the war by supplying the insurgents. The President of Iran has called for the destruction of Israel and the US. Will it take a Nuke to go off on in a public market in Israel before you want to act? Or maybe you will wait till they set one off in the US.

#1 – We supplied the Mujahedeen (including the Taliban) during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. By your logic, the USSR would have been within its rights to conduct a first strike against the US. We supplied the Contras in Nicaragua. By your logic, the Nicaraguan government would have been within its rights to conduct a first-strike against the US. Etc, etc.

#2 – Will it take a nuke going off in Israel? Yes, it will, because we cannot know the future. Also, doesn’t Israel possess a great deal of nuclear, bio and chem weapons? I think they’re more than able to defend themselves, thank you very much. And if Iran attacked them, they know Israel would wipe them out. Kind of like the US and the USSR during the Cold War. Not the most ideal of situations, but since we weren’t that interested in nuclear non-proliferation, about the best you can do.

#3 – The Iranian leader did not call for the destruction of the US, nor the destruction of Israel.

  104. Jamie says:

Do any of the arsenecks in the right wing nutosphere know anything about the history of Iran and its people and its culture? Obviously, many of the neo-cons do but they don’t care. But what about idiots like Kevin who just repeat the talking points that the neo-cons spoon feed to people like him?

Quick primer. Iran – constantly screwed by foreign intervention throughout the 19th and 20th century. Iranians all remember this because unlike most Americans, they actually know the political history of their nation (ask any Iranian about the US-led 1953 coup against Mossadegh and I’m sure he won’t have anything nice to say about us). At the same time, a large majority of the folks in Iran don’t like the current regime at all. But, again, at the same time, the last thing they want is some foreigners meddling in their affairs. The surest way to get the average Iranian Joe to stand behind the government that he today despises is to bomb/attack/invade Iran. Count on it.

The last time somebody took military action against Iran – ie, Iraq – young Iranians – Shi’a and Sunni alike – sacrificed themselves as human minesweepers. That wasn’t that long ago. Are we looking for a repeat?

This isn’t a country filled with sword carrying nomads. It’s a largely urban, educated and very literate nation with a lively political discourse and vocal opposition. Are the hard-liners bad news? Yeah. Is Ahmadinejad an idiot? Yes. Does he have any real power? No. The guy he beat in the last election – Rafsanjani – is much more powerful than Ahmadinejad. And Mr. Pistachio king ain’t going to risk getting blown up by the US or Israel because that will be the end of his cash flow. He, like many of the other clerical leaders, care more about their power and riches than spreading Islamic revolution or bringing forth the return of the Mahdi. These are people with whom we can negotiate. And it would have been much easier if we had accepted their overtures in 2003 as opposed to following the Cheney approach of “screw ‘em”. Time to start talking with them instead of at them. And the sooner the better. To use Mike Ledeen’s words against him….Faster, please!

In other words, Spudge, you are now trying to claim that it’s the specific words “rockets” and “bombs” that indicate that the U.S is not a peaceful nation. But words like “guns” “cannons” “soldiers” and “warriors” are no such indication when it comes to other nations.

Found this on crooksandliars.com. Can’t remember if TP covered this. Beware of “facts” and Iran…

[Former European CIA Chief Tyler] Drumheller: I had assured my German friends that ["Curveball's" claims] wouldn’t be in the speech. I really thought that I had put it to bed. I had warned the CIA deputy John McLaughlin that this case could be fabricated. The night before the speech, then CIA director George Tenet called me at home. I said: “Hey Boss, be careful with that German report. It’s supposed to be taken out. There are a lot of problems with that.” He said: “Yeah, yeah. Right. Dont worry about that.”

SPIEGEL: But it turned out to be the centerpiece in Powell’s presentation — and nobody had told him about the doubts.

Drumheller: I turned on the TV in my office, and there it was. So the first thing I thought, having worked in the government all my life, was that we probably gave Powell the wrong speech. We checked our files and found out that they had just ignored it.

SPIEGEL: So the White House just ignored the fact that the whole story might have been untrue?

Drumheller: The policy was set. The war in Iraq was coming and they were looking for intelligence to fit into the policy.

  155. Briseadh na Faire says:

For good measure, the unofficial Scottish National Anthem,

    Scotland the Brave

Hark when the night is falling
Hear! hear the pipes are calling,
    Loudly and proudly calling,
    Down thro’ the glen.
There where the hills are sleeping,
    Now feel the blood a-leaping,
    High as the spirits
    of the old Highland men.

    Chorus
    Towering in gallant fame,
    Scotland my mountain hame,
    High may your proud
    standards gloriously wave,
    Land of my high endeavour,
    Land of the shining river,
Land of my heart for ever,
    Scotland the brave.

Aye, there’s lots of civilized countries with century upon century of warfare in their histories, that have opted for non-militaristic anthems.

Perhaps someday the United States will no longer see a need for a national anthem to stir the hearts towards warfare, but instead to inspire beauty and peace.

  156. Jay Randal says:

Bombing Michael is the same as attacking. Just because bombs will be dropped from the air, and missiles fired at Iran, does not mean they have not been attacked. Pearl Harbor remember was a bombing attack on our Naval fleet in Hawaii by the Japanese. President Roosevelt said the US was attacked. NO invasion of Hawaii occured by Japanese troops.

  158. Briseadh na Faire says:

Francis Scot Key’s poem was written to the meter of “To Anacreon in Heaven,” a well-known drinking song of the time. The song was considered so bawdy, no decent woman was allowed to sing it!

Here, then, are the original lyrics:

To Anacreon in Heaven, where he fat in full glee,
A few fons of Harmony fent a petition,
    That He their Infpirer and Patron would be;
When this anfwer arrived from the Jolly Old Grecian
    “Voice, Fiddle, and Flute,
    “no longer be mute,
“I’ll lend you my Name and infpire you to boot,
“And, befides, I’ll infruct you like me to entwine
“The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus’s Vine.

    II
    The news through OLYMPUS immediately flew;
When OLD THUNDER pretended to give himfelf Airs
“If thefe mortals are fuffer’d their Scheme to perfue,
“The Devil a Goddefs will ftay above the Stairs.
    “Hark, already they cry,
    “In tranfports of Joy,
“Away to the Sons of ANACREON we’ll fly,
“And there, with good Fellows, we’ll learn to entwine
“The Myrtle of VENUS with BUCCUS’S Vine.

    III
“The YELLOW-HAIRED GOD and his nine fufty Maids
“From Helicon’s Banks will incontinent flee,
“IDALIA will boaft but of tenantlefs Shades,
“And the bi-forked Hill a mere Desart will be
    “My Thunder, no fear on’t,
    “Shall foon do it’s Errand,
    ” and, dam’me! I’ll fwinge the Ringleaders, I warrant,
“I’ll trim the young Dogs, for thus daring to twine
“The Myrtle of VENUS with BACCUS’S Vine.

    IV
APOLLO rose up; and faid, “Pr’ythee ne’er quarrel,
“Good King of the Gods, with my Vot’ries below:
“Your Thunder is ufelefs.” – then, fhewing his Laurel,
Cry’d, “Sic evitabile fulmen, you know!
    “then over each Head
    “My Laurels I’ll fpread;
“So my Sons from your Crackers no Mifchief fhall dread,
“Whilst fnug in their Club-Room, they jovially twine
“The Myrtle of VENUS with BACCUS’S Vine.

    V
Next MOMUS got up, with his rifible Phiz,
And fwore with APOLLO he’d cheerfully join
“The full Tide of Harmony ftill shall be his,
“But the Song, and the Catch, & the Laugh fhall be mine
    “Then, JOVE, be not jealous
    Of thefe honeft Fellows.
    Cry’d JOVE, “We relent, fince the Truth you now tell us;
“And fwear, by OLD STYX, that they long fhall entwine
“The Myrtle of VENUS with BACCUS’S Vine.

    VI
    Ye fons of ANACREON, then, join Hand in Hand;
    Preferve Unanimity, Friendfhip, and Love!
    ‘Tis your’s to fupport what’s fo happily plann’d;
You’ve the Sanction of Gods, and the FIAT of Jove.
    While thus we agree
    Our Toaft let it be.
May our club flourish happy, united and free!
And long may the Sons of ANACREON intwine
The Myrtle of VENUS with BACCUS’S Vine.

It’s nice to know the American National Anthem was set to the tune of a raunchy drinking song which espoused Animal-House type orgies!

This is worth repeating. Pound this into your memory, it should be the drumbeat of the Impeachment battlecry:

Drumheller: I turned on the TV in my office, and there it was. So the first thing I thought, having worked in the government all my life, was that we probably gave Powell the wrong speech. We checked our files and found out that they had just ignored it.

I don’t buy the ’support the troop” argument on a judgement to declare war against another country. That’s absolute horsesh*t.

Well, Bush thinks he’s untouchable, and apparently he’s right:

Stanley Hilton’s $7 billion federal class action lawsuit against the Bush Administration for its complicity in the attacks has been thrown out. It’s interesting to note the ruling was based on the “Doctrine of Sovereign Immunity”. “In other words, the suit was not dismissed because of lack of evidence, but rather because the judge reasoned that U.S. Citizens do not have the right to hold a sitting President accountable for anything, even if the charges include premeditated mass murder and premeditated acts of high treason.”

    CONGRESS???? It’s up to you.

  168. Jay Randal says:

Also michael > remember when 9-11-01 happened > Bush said America was attacked. Planes were turned into flying bombs in New York City, but NO invasion occured. When Bush bombs Iran, then Iranians will rightly claim they have been attacked by the US. It would/will be their Pearl Harbor and we become the Imperial fascist Japanese.

Iran started the war by supplying the insurgents. The President of Iran has called for the destruction of Israel and the US. Will it take a Nuke to go off on in a public market in Israel before you want to act? Or maybe you will wait till they set one off in the US.
    Comment by Kevin

Hey Kevin, I heard something similar in 2002-3. Some Pro-Israeli lobbyists and media telling us that its a matter of time, before Saddam takes out Israel and we have a big cloud of mushroom down here in the US.
But what happened? Instead, we have Exxon-Mobil, Haliborton, and Chevron coming up with staggering profits. We’d several Israeli contractors getting big lumps of cash from signed war contracts. And many weapon, pharma, security, and oil guys getting their large cuts of the billions that Bush spends on the war weekly; while we the ordinary people only get weekly bodybags of our friends and loved from Iraq getting fedexed down the morgue here. Then after excess bodies are shipped home, what happens, (Faux, CNN, Times and the other mouthpieces start shouting: Full throtle to Iran…) More soldiers needed to die for Israel. Pathetic!
If you passionately want our boys down to help you kill the new monster you want wiped off the map, well, you’d better call the crews of Faux, CNN & Times to come up with new tales & breaking news, because we are sick of all this sh***ty terrorism and wipe-off crap.

And, isn’t it funny, the big money feels really good. Just keep the war going. Send more hungry kids who can’t pay for their college down the grinder. The number of dead US military men doesn’t mean a sh*t to the Israelis or to their selected moron in the Whithouse. So far their enemie are wiped off, and there is enough cash and oil to be gained from the war.

Well, I think, its time the IDF start some real fighting. Maybe its time gen. daniel tells the entire staff to get their lazy asses off the streets of Gaza where all they do is smoke, booze and shoot old senile grandpas, and kids throwing stones at their tanks. Get real Kevin, its time you people stop pushing the world upside down like you haven’t gotten enough of the damages only the nazis owed. Our boys are tired of killing and bleeding for a nation that was found on injustice, lies and deception. You can’t fool us forever.

  179. David Carlisle says:

Mutually Assured Destruction still works. I don’t care what Iran’s wacko president said, Iran isn’t inclined to fire nuclear weapons at Israel any more than the US is inclined to fire missiles at China. The self preservation thing kicks in.

The BBC’s been discussing the Bush Admin’s efforts to get people into the mood for a fight with Iran. In the US and Iran, we’ve got two nationalist presidents who get high on talking tough. They both try to appeal to their base in international matters because their domestic policies aren’t doing well. In the mentality they seem to share, an international crisis can only be solved with absolute victory for one and utter defeat and humiliation for the other. Their rhetoric can only be ratcheted upward while they play “chicken”.

exley- thanks for the national anthems. Seriously. They were interesting.

I don’t know the Vatican’s national anthem, because I was only able to find the lyrics in Latin. The first line’s something like “Agricola canem habebat et Bingo nomen est”

Briseadh na Faire: For good measure, the unofficial Scottish National Anthem, Scotland the Brave

Actually, the unofficial Scottish National Anthem is Roy Williamson’s Flower of Scotland – which, while also containing military themes (harkening back to Banncokburn – though “those days are past now, and in the past they must remain”), is a far better song than Scotland the Brave.

Greetings from the Federation of Oil Unions in Iraq

To our esteemed brothers and sisters in War on Want

Please accept our sincere apologies for not being able to attend your conference. This is due to the difficult and dangerous times that are the reality of Iraq at present. This awful situation is directly the result of occupation and the terrorists who target the people of Iraq. We believe that America is complicit in all the acts of death and destruction that occur daily in our wounded Iraq. It is clear to us that the aim of American planning and invasion is to destroy the infrastructure of the country and to create civil strife and conflict between the components of Iraqi society. The sectarianism that is tearing Iraq apart was unknown before the occupation. Even the long war with Iran and the brutal sanctions regime did not fracture the unity of the Iraqi people.

The Iraqi people will remain united in the face of these crimes that are orchestrated by the occupying American forces. I implore the peace loving people of the west who believe in genuine democracy to stand with the Iraqi people in their hour of need. The Iraqi people will rise to expel the occupying forces and start the mammoth task of reconstruction with Iraqi hands, and help from the peace loving people of the world.

And I particularly say to America “hands off Iraqi oil”. This wealth belongs to the people of Iraq and the decent people of the world.

I wish you every success with your conference and please do not forget Iraq and its people. Your support of our civil institutions is much appreciated.

To our friends in “War on Want”, thank you for your financial support. It was thanks to your gracious support that our second privatisation conference in Basra was a success.

Finally, I say to you that the Iraqi people believe in peace and genuine democracy and not Bush’s fake democracy built on death and destruction.

    Hassan Juma’a Awad Al-Asadi.
Head of Federation of Iraqi Oil Unions
