Oil Lobby Offers $10,000 Payments To Global Warming Deniers To Push Back On Climate Study

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the most authoritative group on global warming, will report on Friday that it is “very likely” that human activities were the main cause of warming in the past 50 years.

Prominent global warming deniers, such as Rush Limbaugh and Sen. James Inhofe, have already been downplaying the report and contravening the science. But the Guardian reports that there is a more orchestrated movement going on below the radar to confound the public about the IPCC’s report.

The oil lobby is so desperate to push back on the new climate change report that they have been offering to pay global warming skeptics to speak out:

Scientists and economists have been offered $10,000 each by a lobby group funded by one of the world’s largest oil companies to undermine a major climate change report due to be published today.

Letters sent by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), an ExxonMobil-funded thinktank with close links to the Bush administration, offered the payments for articles that emphasise the shortcomings of a report from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Travel expenses and additional payments were also offered.

[...]

The letters were sent by Kenneth Green, a visiting scholar at AEI, who confirmed that the organisation had approached scientists, economists and policy analysts to write articles for an independent review that would highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the IPCC report.

AEI has received more than $1.6 million from ExxonMobil. The well-heeled oil lobby is a primary reason why doubt still exists in the general public about the cause of global warming.

As Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth pointed out, despite the fact that no peer-reviewed scientific articles published in recent years express any doubt that climate change is happening, more than 50 percent of news media coverage of the issue includes the oil industry’s position on the subject.

The Oil Lobby should give the money away in $100 bill bundles, wrapped in tin foil, like Rep. William Jefferson stuck in his freezer in New Orleans, Louisiana. Standard payoff bundle for the mafia is $10,000 bundle in $100 bills. In the movies when you see a guy dump cash bundle on the table wrapped with a rubber band, or bank paper sleave, it is $10,000 in $100 bills hard cold cash.

  27. Jay Randal says:

Krazny > I saw that movie once. If you see in a movie, like a guy gives someone 10 bundles of cash, then that means $100 bills/$10,000 each bundle, so $100,000 cash.

Usually when a suitcase is shown full of $100 bill bundles, then it is one million in cash. 100 bundles = one million dollars.

  28. Jay Randal says:

hacker bob > If someone gives you a bundle of $100 bills, meaning $10,000 in cash, then check to see if the bills are brand new currency or used $100 bills. New cash from the bank can be in sequence of serial numbers, so therefore marked bills. FBI gives those bundles out for sting operations. The kind Rep. Jefferson took in Lousiana > he is very stupid.

In addition to such ice changes–accelerated melting in Greenland, western Antarctica and from mountain glaciers throughout the world–scientists have improved their understanding of the atmosphere’s workings. For example, the tiny particles known as aerosols are far better understood, says atmospheric scientist Piers Forster of the University of Leeds in England andalso a lead author. “We estimate that their total radiative forcing is around -1.3 [watts/meter2],” which is a cooling effect, he says. “Because of this and a better understanding of how forcing terms add up, we are able to sum the radiative forcings and, for the first time, come up with the statement that we have very high confidence that humans have had a warming influence since preindustrial times.”

There are, much to your chagrin, more Democratic Christians than Republican ones. Besides God and Jesus were neither Republican nor Democratic, as much as you would like to believe such.

the Christians who actually followed with Jesus on His journeys of evangelism did live in communal groups and shared possessions, meager as they may have been. Jesus taught them that they must live under civil law while also abiding by the Higher Law regarding their personal behavior and aspirations. They were told that they should pay their taxes while not seeking after personal riches, to work for their sustenance while sharing with those who could not work, to maintain their bodies in healthful condition while healing those who suffered from ill health, to contstantly strive to conquer the evil that lived within themselves.

    Note the following news story:

CAN YOU SAY “smoke and mirrors”? Instead of accepting mandatory caps on greenhouse gas emissions, the Bush administration now proposes to combat global warming through the deployment of giant mirrors that reflect sunlight back into outer space.

Can anyone actually believe this bullshit? This idea reminds me of college contests where students are challenged to find the most complicated and elegant solution to perform an otherwise simple task, such as for example building an elegant mouse trap. This mirror project also sounds a bit too much like the so-called “Star Wars” missile defense system. See how many billions of dollars can be wasted doing the absurdly impractical. Or maybe this is the way to reward certain “friendly” contractors who will be awarded no-bid billion dollar contracts. Why not instread do the “simple” solution of cutting back on carbon dioxide emissions now? Duh!

The smart ones here, like Juan C.,will figure it out.

  64. Moderation says:

Willy, unfortunately, it’s not that easy. Not only are we currently experiencing global warming, we are also experiencing global dimming. That is to say, while the greenhouse gases are keeping the heat in, the particulate matter is currently blocking 10% of the sunlight hitting the Earth’s surface.

The UK is doing an amazing job at scrubbing the particulate matter from their emissions. However, they are not also eliminating the greenhouse gases nearly as efficiently. The UK currently has skies with some of the greatest amount of sunlight coming through, and their country is heating up at a swifter rate than those countries not scrubbing their pollution. As are the other leading countries at reducing such particles.

Evaporation of water has nothing to do with heat, it is directly proportional to the amount of sunlight hitting the surface of the water. Global pan evaporation rates have been steadily decreasing, and, as I stated above, currently 10% more sunlight is being blocked. We know this because of the measurements taken from space (that lets us know that the sun is the same brightness as it was previously, so this has nothing whatsoever to do with the sun itself). This is, scientists now know, what has been causing a lot of the wacky weather, such as droughts, no monsoons when there should be, etc, that global warming alone could not explain.

This leaves us in quite a conundrum. We must not only eliminate greenhouse gases, but we must do it at a quicker rate than we eliminate particulate matter, or we accelerate global warming, melting the icecaps, etc, we must reverse the spread of, and eliminate the particulate matter, or global dimming will slow evaporation rates (which further wreaks havoc on the weather systems).

Basically, we need to simultaneously clean both greenhouses gases and particulate matter, or we will cause on or another tipping point.

We are riding on a razor’s edge, people. We need to get it together, or we won’t be able to survive on the planet we create. Life will go on, humanity will not.

THe Republican power calculation was always a farce in my eyes. They knew from the beginning that when Bush has to face real problems, they would very fast fall below the 50% threshold. The problems have amassed. A lost election, lack of authority concerning Iran, lack of authority cncerning Iraq. These things are all interconnected and Bush is in danger not be able to control the spin anymore.

Well, that’s what “doctor’s” in commercials have to say. Any one who gets paid to give a “scientific” opinion really has no credibility in my book.

  98. Earthling says:

Nothing like a little hush money to shut people up. Is this the United States or the mafia?

  99. Jeff says:

I love the fact that Gore traveled the country promoting his book in a private jet. Burning up all that precious fuel that he claims is such a contributing factor to global warming. I guess it’s okay to waste air fuel if you are a left wing, liberal…oh but when it comes to the “money hungry, war starting republicans” it’s a different story!
    Get a life people!

  100. GINGIN says:

WELL, I HAVE PLENTY TO SAY ABOUT THE ADMIN. AND THE DARK UNDERHANDED TACTICS ENGINEERED TO KEEP THE AMERICAN PUBLIC IN CHECK. THEY HAVE MANAGED WITHOUT DIFFICULTY SO FAR TO KEEP THE BLINDFOLD ON THE EYES OF MOST EVERY BODY IN THIS COUNTRY.

SADLY IT IS TO SAY THAT MANY ARE SO GULLIBLE THAT THEY BELIEVE THE $%$##& THE ADMIN. PUTS OUT THERE, THEY DO NOT BOTHER TO QUESTION HOW FAR ARE THEY BEING SHAFTED, THEY JUST BEND OVER AND TAKE.

OK! IT EVEN MORE SAD THAT MANY CHOOSE TO LIVE IN A FANTASY WORLD WHERE ALL IS GOOD, GREAT AND TRUTHFUL, WHERE MONEY CAN BUY ALL, STEAKS TASTE GREAT AND THERE IS NO DESEASE MADE IN LABS KILLING MILLIONS. FUNNY IT REMINDS ME OF THE MOVIE THE MATRIX, THE WORLD PEOPLE BELIEVE TO BE LIVING IN AND THE REAL WORLD.

MY, MY, HOW BLIND DO PEOPLE WISH TO BE.
OPEN YOUR EYES PEOPLE, THE TRUTH IS NOT WHAT IS BEING TOLD OR SHOWN, THEY ONLY SHOW AND TELL WHAT THEY WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW AND WHAT THEY KNOW PEOPLE WISH TO SEE AND HEAR.

PERAHAPS I AM BEING A BIT DRASTIC, CRUDE OR EVEN BOLD, BUT WHO SAID THAT THE TRUTH WAS PINK AND BLUE.

    HONESTLY

  101. O'brien says:

You guys that criticise Gore for traveling in jet to publish his “book” I guess would prefer that he take a horse and buggy? Oh, yeah, that would really work!! It’s like Chomsky said when people criticised his finanical status – do his critics want him to work from a cave somewhere in the Rockies?

Get Real!!! We are living in a world dominated by wealth, power and corporate control. Open your eyes, righty!! The average person really does not have a voice in political affairs. (What percent of Americans are against the war and yet Bush wants to escalate it? And it will happen! And he’ll get his war with Iran also. ) I certainly appreciate people who are not living on streets, who have some wherewithal to speak out for me and you had better be grateful also.

  102. Opposed to badscience says:

Jeesh! Its amazing how lemming like this world has become. Al Gore’s movie and the IPCC soon to be doctored scientific reports are selling a scare agenda not too distant from “weapons of mass destruction”. How about facing up to the fact that scientifically we are just beginning to scratch the surface on this so called global warming matter. Its a wake up call for all when well respected scientists are forced to distance themselves from the new main stream scientific methods offered by the IPCC which conveniently ignore sound statistical methods and new studies that offer deeper understanding of the variables explaining cause and effect.

I hope when the blinders finally are removed on this matter that we aren’t living in the middle of the next ice age that even man-made green house gases couldn’t prevent.
