“The Bush administration will ask for another $100 billion for military and diplomatic operations in Iraq and Afghanistan this year and seek $145 billion for 2008, a senior administration official said Friday.”
The 2008 defense budget, due for public release on Monday, is expected to total $470 billion, not counting wartime supplementals of perhaps $100 billion or more, likely continuing a trend of an expanding national security bill. And new expenses related to a proposed increase in land forces might mean even more spending.
For 2007, the Pentagon got $432 billion plus $170 billion in supplementals. (All figures in this article ignore around $150 billion in annual spending by the energy and homeland security departments and the Veterans Administration – spending often counted, by many observers, as contributing to national security.)
the republicans and democrats are destroying America they are as evil as each other, they are both the same Foreign policies
do you think 911 happened because you a country of peace loving buddhist monks , or was Switzerland bombed because they interfere in proping up dictators that act in American interests
Change you Foreign policy and a two teir party voting system , and most of all Impeach Bush and show the world america has at least some scruples
Monkey Boy’s not just asking for more money, he also wants 30,000 more “support” troops along with the 20,000 that he has already mentioned he wants over there.
oh ya… that’s serving the people all right…. focusing mostly on
destruction and war from a totally corrupted administration.
of course we all know by the time of what it REALLY cost
it will be 4 – times higher and the totally corrupted fed will
be more than happy to put us farther into debt for the next
50 years …. yup… serving the people all right
I think Exxon-Mobil should be expected to fork over $30B of its $39B profits to pay for the war that benefits it. Same goes for the other oil and defense contracting companies.
The Democrats should immediately separate the money requested for Iraq from the money sought for Afghanistan, and then shift a significant amount (at least $20 billion) to Afghanistan from Iraq. This will put a limit on our involvement in Iraq and send desperately needed resources to a war we cannot and should not lose.
Hmmmm, sounds like more & more cash and bullions for Lockheed Martin Corporation (#1 Major Weapon seller for the DoD), Boeing, Northrop Grumman Corporation, Halliburton Company, Mobile-Exxon, Chevron & Co.
The oil, pharma, security and gun guys are actually raking in quite alot of cash from this democracy shit. Hahahahahaha.
There’s a hot debate about throwing your cash into oil and weapon shares.
The war is making the smart guys obscenely richer. Hurry up guys, get intouch with your stockbroker, and buy the right shares.
Hahahahahaha….. GOD SAVE AMERICA!
Yes, this sounds less like funds truly needed for war and support of our troops and more like additional profits for the war profiteers of this illegitimate war.
If we were planning on drawing down our troops, why are they planning additional funding?

Separating Afghanistan funds from Iraq funds is a neccesity, if no other reason than bean counting. But Bush has already diverted funds from Afghanistan to Iraq, at least once that the public knows of. Unless Congress actually forces the funding to be spent where it is allocated, the busheviks will just divert the money to Iraq, or maybe to another Olympic swimming pool somewhere.
As for the money we spent to “help” Afghanistan, virtually all of it has been diverted to the pockets of the warlords and corrupt government officials. Allocating more money to Afghanistan, unless its spending is controlled directly by honest representatives of the US government (if any can be found), will go the same way.
The Afghanistan theater is not any more “winnable” than Iraq. We put the warlords back in charge, Karzai is a powerless figurehead at this point. The warlords are on non one’s side but their own, they are at least as brutal as the Taliban, and if it suddenly became in their best interests to fight US troops, they would switch sides without hesitation.
I am sick of US tax dollars making Bush, his friends, and their chosen representatives in Iraq and Afghanistan wealthy, while people die from violence and starve to death. Their is no good solution to this mess anymore. But a completely neccessary first step is to immediately remove King George and Sheriff Cheney. Lacking that, none of this mess has a hope of being fixed.
I wonder if they might be willing to itemize that request. It would be nice to know up front how much of it is going to no-bid contracts to cronies, or how much is going towards shoddy buildings that aren’t going to be used and will just crumble before they’re even finished. How much of it’s going to supplies that will never even get delivered, or to software that’s unuseable? How many billions are just going to disappear down a goddam rathole?
With all the billions of dollars in emergency supplemental borrowing and spending to support our troops, why are they sent into battle with insufficient armor, weapons and ammunition?
Briseadh na Faire…I want to know the answer to that question too. If they would take back all the money that contractors such as Halliburton, KBR, and CACI basically stole from the American people, they probably would have close to that amount. The Bush administration and most of our Congress are a bunch of dirty rotten scoundrels.
The funding for the actions in Afganistan must be kept separate from money for Iraq. There should be no money for Iraq except enough to leave Iraq. If anything is spent for anything else it should be further reason for criminal charges and impeachment.

February 2nd, 2007 at 2:43 pmYes and will the Democrats tell Bush no more funds for war in Iraq?

February 2nd, 2007 at 2:54 pmThat’s all. This is so cheap. We should spend twice that in our ongoing effort to double the size of Iran.
Great work fellas. Take five.

Good thing it’s not real money. There’s not enough gold in the universe to cover the national debt already.

February 2nd, 2007 at 7:07 pmwhat a crime. a crime. the war in afghanistan, which is where it should have stayed, would have cost the U.S. 100 – 150 billion tops.
