ThinkFast: February 2, 2007

bushwarming.jpg

A new international climate report reveals that “there can be no question that the increase in greenhouse gases are dominated by human activities.” White House official Sharon Hays called the report “significant,” but stopped short of saying whether it would change President Bush’s policy on greenhouse gas emissions.

Britain plans to put children on “the front line of the battle to save the planet,” by making issues of sustainable development – such as energy saving and recycling – a compulsory part of the school curriculum. In contrast, many schools in the United States are banning An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore’s global warming documentary.

A long-awaited National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq “outlines an increasingly perilous situation in which the United States has little control and there is a strong possibility of further deterioration.” The document cites sectarian violence — not al Qaeda or Iran — as the primary source of conflict.

-1 percent: The personal savings rate for Americans, now at the “lowest level since the Great Depression.” Economists “warn that the phenomenon exists at a particularly bad time with 78 million baby boomers approaching retirement age.”

The Senate’s vote yesterday to increase the minimum wage included $8.3 billion in tax cuts to small businesses. Since the minimum wage was last raised 10 years ago, Congress has given small businesses $36 billion in tax breaks.

“President Bush’s 2008 budget will call for the largest Pell Grant increase in three decades,” following proposals by the House and the Senate to raise it. The maximum Pell Grant “has remained at $4,050 a year since 2002, lagging behind tuition increases and inflation.”

“The U.S. military drive to train and equip Iraq’s security forces has unwittingly strengthened anti-American Shiite Muslim cleric Muqtada al-Sadr’s Mahdi Army militia.” Sadr’s militias have heavily infiltrated the Iraqi police and army units that U.S. troops have trained.

Federal Judge Reggie Walton agreed to let prosecutors show video clips of former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan telling reporters in 2003 that former vice presidential aide Lewis “Scooter” Libby “had nothing to do” with leaking information about the wife of a Bush administration critic. See our video compilation HERE.

The Washington Post’s David Ignatius on how the Libby trial reveals a “failed cover-up”: “The White House was worried that the CIA would reveal that it had been pressured in 2002 and early 2003 to support administration claims about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. … The machinations of Cheney, Libby and others were an attempt to weave an alternative narrative that blamed the CIA.”

And finally: Wolfowitz gets some decent socks. “The fashion police came to the rescue of World Bank president Paul Wolfowitz, who made worldwide headlines by revealing his holey socks at a mosque in Turkey last weekend.” See the photographic evidence here. “A Gold Toe rep delivered 21 pairs of dress socks to his office yesterday (labeled ‘rush delivery’), Turkish sock manufacturers mailed a dozen pairs, and employees also presented him with a pair.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Does anyone know if there’s been an estimate on the actual number of extremists in Iraq? Our local paper, in a recent editorial, says that there are “several thousand” that are fighting the creation of a new Iraqi government, and that Americans just need to have patience.

$8.3 billion of our money for tax breaks to small business on top of the $36 billion we’ve already given?! I wish they’d define “small business” and exactly what kind of tax break they’re talking about. My husband has a small business, and he certainly hasn’t seen much of a break. I have a feeling these “small businesses” aren’t so small.

“The Senate’s vote yesterday to increase the minimum wage included $8.3 billion in tax cuts to small businesses. Since the minimum wage was last raised 10 years ago, Congress has given small businesses $36 billion in tax breaks. ”

What ever happened to pay-go. As I see it the Senate just pass a bill that will tack on $8.3 billion in new debt. This is not a good start for the Senate. The Senate needs to enforce their own rules and not even vote on a bill that does not adhere to pay-go rules. And this doesn’t even address the issue of whether these tax breaks are excessive given the breaks they have already been given.

  12. Briseadh na Faire says:

    From the Spiegel Article:

It [Europe] has become a training ground for terrorists, especially since the war in Iraq has heralded an underground railroad for militants to go and fight there. It is being used for young fanatics in Europe to be smuggled into Iraq to fight Americans and, assuming they survive, to return home, where they present a more potent threat than they did before they left.

And all along, Bush has been blaming Iran! We should be preparing to attack Eurasia! Eurasia is harboring Terrorists! Eurasia is training Terrorists!

Oceania is at war with Eurasia. Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia.

  13. Juan C says:

Britain plans to put children on “the front line of the battle to save the planet,”

Excellent point, Dallas. And who insisted on increasing the flow of red ink? None other than the Republican Minority. Republicans filibustered the minimum wage bill until they got another $8.3 billion handout for Corporate America.

Think they’ll vote to cut War spending to pay for it?

    This is from Hillary:

Clinton, who reiterated support for the security barrier Israel is building in the West Bank, also said the Palestinians’ governing Hamas should not be recognized until it renounces violence and terrorism and recognizes Israel’s right to exist.

“We believe that Israelis have the right to live in their country without the constant threat of terrorism, war and rocket fire,” she said. “We stand with Israel because it’s a beacon of democracy in the region.”

She is a real progressive, huh? She supports the barrier, like probably she would have supported the building of jewish ghettos back in the Nazi times. Israel is a democracy that oppresses palestinians. What a beacon!

Don’t you think libs at the National Weather Service could FIRST do the job our government pays them to do, then, in their spare time, gin up the shaky “global warming” theory?

Good job libs – I guess it wasn’t enough to fail in forecasting Katrina’s path, leading to 1,000 deaths in New Orleans, but you also ignore the seriousness of these storms in FL.

#8 I am assuming you are referring to the Myth that Mayor Daley stole the presidential election for Kennedy in 1960? If you live in Illinois you will know that at the same time Daley was accused of manipulating the Chicago area vote, that the republican party was accused of manipulating the downstate vote. Either way, lets say Illinois went 100% for Nixon. Illinois had 27 electoral votes back then. Subtract that 27 from Kennedy’s 303 and he still has 276 votes. Now add it to Nixon’s 219 and has 246 votes still losing the election. Contrast that with 2000 and 2004 where one disputed state in each election, Florida and Ohio respectively, is the deciding factor.

Also Carter lost in 1980. Are you implying that Carter stole the election for Reagan? Nope, what time may show is that Reagan got the Iranians to hold onto the hostages through the end of the election cycle so he could use that to his advantage.

I wonder how much Bush and dirty dick get paid by the oil industry for continually talking down global warming?

#28 Hacker Bob, Ok now the Jewish people have been in charge of Israel for nearly 60 years. The Palestinians are a displaced people who have been removed from their homes and property to become essentially ghetto dwellers within sight of their own land. So if that happened here in the US, lets say the American Indians were able to regather their strength and reclaim the land they say god gave them and they pushed all the rest of us out, Do you think we would fight back with any means possible? I can see both sides of this, the Jewish people wanted a homeland and claimed their biblical homeland, even though most of them were 10 generations or more removed from the Mideast. They have established what I would consider to be a very progressive society on the Mideast and they would like their security, and everyone should be secure in their existence. But on the other hand they have displaced an entire country and they did it partially through the use of terrorism, though they don’t do so today. It’s a whole hell of a lot more complicated than simply being a case of the Palestinians being terrorists. It is really the only weapon they have. Diplomacy is always preferred (except by our administration) but poverty and lack of education breeds anger and crime. The Palestinians are an impoverished people who are essentially in a position where they have no diplomatic leverage anymore. My personal opinion is that they should use terrorism as a bargaining chip, however they are not quite so unified and don’t seem to speak with one voice, so while one voice may stop the use, the next group will se terror. This is a problem that I think they can solve, but it may take a generation to do so. I don’t see an immediate solution. They should start with the education system and build it from the ground up while also working to build the economy and try to get the Palestinian and Israeli economies interrelated so they can build a common interest. Is this possible? Mid east history says no, but nothing else works. Simply saying stop your terror will work about as well as telling horny teens to not have sex.

    1. It was an unpleasant way to begin your posting. “Jew-boy” is considered a slur. Maybe you didn’t mean “jewish boy” to sound like an epithet but it came off that way.

    2. It was irrelevant. People who believe that Israel has a right to defend itself against suicide bombers are not necessarily Jewish.

    3. Your statement was based on nothing. You have no idea what my religious beliefs are.

Moreover — even though it is irrelevant — the fact is that you and I have already talked about the fact that we share a common Italian ancestry (so the chances of my being Jewish is remote).

We have had some friendly disagreements and debates, Juan, and we have gotten “snippy” with eachother. But I must say I was somewhat taken aback by the “jewish boy” language. It just seemed uncharacteristically harsh and intolerant of you.

Stop talking shit, Jason. We, specifically your type, haven’t improved this world one bit, and should be ashamed of what we’re passing on to our children.

Zooey, considering that the Bush Administration has been underfunding Stafford Loans, to the point in which they have lost ground over at least the last few years, well I will believe it when I see it too.

But I am sincerly hoping the Pell Grant increases go through, at substantial levels. The rate at which they have failed to keep up with inflation and the rising costs of higher education is surely a deterrent to middle and lower class students hoping to fund a college education. I know any increase in college funding would make a huge difference for our family. I know too many kids in our town who did not or could not attend college, mostly due to costs and funding. And a high school diploma just isn’t cutting it these days… unless you future includes working at McD’s.

The bottom line is, both nations have a right to exist. Period. They both need to go into defensive postures rather than offensive. If it takes a wall to slow the violence, so be it. 86. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Jason,

First of all, the exact phraseology Juan C used was “jewish boy”, which is about as insulting as “christian boy” or “muslim boy”. Are you insulted by the term “christian boy”?

Second, the term “jew-boy”, which actually has been in use as a racial epithet, was used on this thread soley by you. I understand that when you have the untenable beliefs that float around in your head, that stretching the truth to fit your preconceived conceptions is second nature, but don’t expect us to just sit by and not call you on it.

Third, there was a lot more to Juan C’s post than the words “jewish boy”…but that’s all you chose to focus on, isn’t it? No….far easier to simply yammer on about how “anti-semitic” he is than to actually address his points.

  87. Jason M. Hendler says:

    #85, Zooey,

LOL – if you are talking about the premature electionation of a Democratic Congress, then no, I am not smarting.

So far, the Dem Senate has passed a minimum wage bill that is similar to what the Reps tried to pass for a few years – increase the minimum wage, but add tax relief to businesses, so that they do not have to lay-off workers or increase prices for their goods / serices.

But, most impressively, the Dems are now retreating from retreating, giving the Reps cover from both a success or a failure in Iraq. If we win, Dems look like cowards twice over, and if we lose, they share culpability in the defeat. Moreover, Biden, Clinton and Lieberman are split from their party on this issue, while Dodd and Kennedy won’t even sign on to the current non-binding resolution, because it doesn’t retreat enough.

Not true. It is very difficult to convert biomass to ethanol without incurring a net energy cost. This is a major technical obstacle that might take decades to resolve, if ever.

There is no single solution to the coming energy crisis. Wind, photovoltaics, nuclear, and biomass all have a role to play.

#84 Bob think about this too, from the palestinian perspectibve the establishment of the Jewish state could conciveably be viewed in the same context as the crusades. Except this time it is a Jewish state being established. How long did the various crusades go on? Did the christian state survive? Nope. I think ultimately Israel will survive, but until they can at least agree on what to do the situation will continue as it is today. Ultimately they need to negotiate with each side presenting their ultiamte perfect scenario and working through the non-negotiable stufff, the compromiseabel stuff and the stuff that just does nto matter. But I honestly don’t see that happening for a full generation until the infrastructure of palestinian society is repaired and hope is visible. Without hope, there is no point in negotiating. They thought they had it a few years ago, but the Israelie kept building settlements. So both sides have much to do with getting the proper enviornment established.

Your comment about the NWS (#23) is idiotic. It falls below even your usual low standards. The daily weather forecasters at NWS have no connection at all to the climate scientists at NOAA. There is no way to know yet whether any negligence was involved in forecasting today’s storms in Florida, but NWS has an excellent track record with storm warnings. Their Katrina prediction was right on the mark, by the way. As for saying that the NWS forecasters working today in Florida were negligent because YOU assert WITHOUT FACTUAL SUPPORT that they are liberals, and that they were not working at their posts as they should have been, is slanderous. Not to mention downright bizarre.

In English, the expression you used can be very easily misconstrued, specially in the context you used it. In the US the use of racial, religious, ethnic characteristics (or hinting to them) to describe a person can get you in hot water if your meaning is not readily apparent. Addressing a person in such a manner is a major no-no.
