ThinkProgress Retreats

The four of us who write ThinkProgress are holding a retreat today where we’ll try to sketch out the direction of the blog (and our daily newsletter) over the next few months. We’ll continue to post throughout the day.

We want to know what you think. Share your ideas in the comments section or via email.

134 Responses to “ThinkProgress Retreats”

  1. Jay Randal says:

Have fun at the retreat, but be prepared to post threads next week on Bush attacking Iran. WWIII is very close you all.

  2. dlet says:

    snide “retreat” comments from trolls…….3…….2…….1……

  3. mark joy says:

I love Think Progress. Keep up the good work.

  4. Jeffrey says:

Keep up the good work. You deserve a quick rest, but we need you back soon!

  5. S.D. says:

  6. Barfly says:

How about if TP does some research on the issue of Social Security; specifically, would elimination of the cap on SSI payroll deductions make the system solvent? We hear a lot of talk of means testing, and raising the age for retirees to collect, but nothing about the effects of raising the cap. How about it?

  7. Krazny says:

My only thing, would be a registration requirement, I think it would help cut down on name jacking, name switching, and some of the other problems. At the very least, if it is me, or zooey, or exley who posts then we know it is that person who posts.

  8. michael panzera says:

A minor suggestion. Where you guys point out that the MSM aren’t accurate or are not reporting on something, it seems that you should send your posts as letters to the editor so that the media outlet will be forced to follow-up and a wider public can benefit from the fact-checking, etc.

  9. Liberal in New Mexico says:

I thoroughly enjoy Think Progress and think it’s a great avenue to share ideas and interract with other curious ones. One thing: It would be nice if comments had to do with the topic at hand and digression with other trivia discouraged, or at least minimalized. Overall, the work and energy is marvelous and productive. I likey, mon frere.

  10. Benjamin says:

tp is my favorite news site. i like the frequency and type of the updates. (i rarely read the comments, though, because the site has generally acquired strange posters in this sections). perhaps you can have guestbloggers like dkos? i would like some more coverage of progress made in the us war in the middle east, and perhaps some israel coverage (that is fact-based). perhaps you can have alert levels for scandals and corruption like the terror threat levels

    -Benjamin

  11. Liberals Heart Terrorists says:

#1 – WWIII started already, moron. It started on 9/11.

As for my thoughts on your blog, ThinkProgress NEVER criticizes Democrats except for Joe Lieberman. The conservative blogs rip Republicans on a daily basis. I think trashing the oppo is a great way to gain power, but not keep it. ThinkProgress needs to take a sharper look at their own over the next year. With the nominating process in the spotlight, you should take a hard look at who you want to lead you. (Here’s a hint: Hillary will be Du-Kerry’d if she gets the nomination.)

Other than that, this is a wonderful, anti-Bush, anti-American blog.

  12. Tobey Tall says:

    enjoy yourself in the Bunker

  13. WC says:

On many threads people get off topic. Not that it’s such a bad thing (I do it too), and I know people can post on different topics on the ThinkFast threads, but what about having an “open thread” section each day?

  14. woke says:

i ALWAYS stop by here on my internet excursions for top flight posts of REAL NEWS

    Keep On Truckin’

  15. Liberals Heart Terrorists says:

As a right-winger, this is one of the most informative anti-Bush, anti-American, pro-terrorists blogs out there.

That said, I think TP needs to zero in on the Democrats this year. Trashing the oppo is a great way to gain power (especially when they are down), but not a good way to keep it. People are looking to Democrats for answers right now (scary, I know) and trashing Bush isn’t going to carry the day.

You need to decide who you want to lead you into the 2008 election and taking shots at Bush is not going to help you. You’ve maximized your utility of anti-Bush hatred – time to take out the anti-war posers on the left like Hillary and Biden.

  16. Krazny says:

Other than that, this is a wonderful, anti-Bush, anti-American blog.

    Comment by Liberals Heart Terrorists — February 2, 2007 @ 2:18 pm

    George Bush is not America

  17. Jay Randal says:

LHT guy > this is a progressive blog site, so go to redstate.com where your fascist views are appreciated. Have a nice day > lol. Oh by the way 9-11-01 was a terrorist attack and not the beginning of WWIII. When you see a Chinese or Russian nuke fall on your state, because of Bush attacking Iran, then WWIII has officially begun in earnest.

  18. Immigration2008DotCom says:

Perhaps TP should consider un-banning those who have not engaged in abusive behavior but have simply disagreed with it. The large numbers of childish comments here can be dealt with by ignoring those users, by not refering to those who disagree as “trolls”, and by posting higher-quality content.

  19. dlet says:

I would like to see a “Feel Good Story of the Day”. Sometimes all the negative stories get a little too much. Need to show some positive steps being taken in this country and/or the world. Also that way Liberals Heart terrorists might see some more stories on Democrats like he is asking for. ;)

  20. Bruce Gorton says:

How about a bit more economic data? I mean, for example the US has posted worse-then-expected jobs growth data for January, maybe a bit on that would be good?

  21. margaret says:

I love this site but sometimes the trolls overwhelm the threads. That can be discouraging, which is probably why they do it.

Also, it’s discouraging when my comments don’t show up, sometimes for no apparent reason. Sometimes they don’t show up when all I did was link to a CNN article – is that not allowed? Links can be very informative.

It’s great to have a forum of like-minded posters (for therapeutic reasons for ex.) but I love it when fellow posters help me get to the bottom of things (i.e. the truth!), and links can really help in that regard.

  22. Jay Randal says:

margaret > some links to other sites can have a virus, so TP deletes posts with them occasionally. Best to post a small part of the article and see what happens.

  23. hacker bob says:

I second (or is it third at this point) the registration recomendation. It would help the troll problem. As a Republican that posts here, I love the site overall. Even if I do not always agree with the opinions.

  24. asdf says:

how about a night cap with highlight comments from poster’s throughout the day. the most imformative or thoughtful posts people have shared throughout the day

  25. Liberals Heart Terrorists says:

#16, true, but you hate people hate Bush AND America….

Bruce Gorton – If you knew anything about economics you would understand how dumb you sound. Job numbers were revised up for the year 2006 (as they were last year) and several economists agree that it’s getting harder and harder to get an accurate reading on job numbers when they are first released. But go ahead and sing gloom and doom. No one is listening.

Jay – the only fascists are the left-wing attack dogs who smear anyone who doesn’t believe in their cause (such as global warming).

  26. margaret says:

    side note to immigration2008dotcom,

there are those that “disagree” and then there are “trolls”.

For example, Exley is one who frequently disagrees (which is fine by me) but then there are those who seem to agitate for the sake of being disruptive – like the troll-like postings of those who use handles like ‘Liberals Heart Terrorists’.

Those people usually seem to just be hateful and toxic, both to themselves and to those who have the misfortune of being anywhere near them.

  27. Jay says:

    Fine.

Cut and Run if you must.

By doing this you are only emboldening the enemy

  28. Liberal in New Mexico says:

  29. dalivision says:

Please continue with your posts. Love the perspective and the various issues (although could post other issues). We need you.

  30. hil says:

I would suggest taking a good look at Kos,
the model he has set up is quite good…. low on trolls, teird comments, polls. good discussions and great posts

  31. Bruce Gorton says:

Another thing that got released today was a pretty damning report to the UN on global warming.

    http://www.sundaytimes.co.za/News/Article.aspx?id=374944

Maybe have dedicated sections to this sort of thing?

  32. DM says:

    #11

WW3 didn’t start on 9/11. That was a single, stupid terrorist attack.

WW3 started with the optional invasion of Iraq.

If you think that Iraq was an inevitable consequence of 9/11, then I can agree only if you push back the start of WW3 to the date Bush was ‘elected’.

  33. Yikes says:

TP, maybe you could model yourself after conservative blogs. That way, comments like those from Liberals Heart Terrorists would be deleted in seconds.

Seriously though, seeing comments like Liberals Heart Terrorists allows everyone who believes that progress is done through thinking see just how Neocons and religious fanatics have been brainwashed. It shows just how far reality can be fictionalized.

I like S.D.’s suggestion of prizes. Specifically a trip to New York to visit with the four of you. May I also suggest that I win that trip. April looks good for me. :)

  34. DonS says:

Looked at your bios for the first time. As a ‘65 grad, I’m always pleased to see Colgate helping to lay the groundwork for progressives, Amanda!

  35. Jet Mech says:

Once again TP has filtered out my moniker with their fickle fecking filter fairy.

I gave them my IP number and I proved to them that it was not me who heisted monikers, yet they still don’t know how to read or monitor weblogs and cookie data for some odd reason.

You know TP you could match a moniker to an email address without registration and put an end to the name jacking and the wild accusatory guessing game that goes on here, yet you don’t.

I think TP should hire someone that knows how to operate a web site instead of this goofy rumor mill method of making ‘lists’

You could have a decent site if you would stop the Santos and the Liberal hearts terrorists but you don’t. And I have to wonder why you allow such trolling yet block well thought out posts such as BNFs.

  36. Jamie in Oregon says:

TP is my number one source. Keep up the great work!!

  37. Conservative Sister-Lovin says:

From a rightwing praspective, this blog sucks – their needs to be a more Red State Conservative, sister-sleeping values. We needs more threads on things that Republicans are known fer: beastiality, incest, cowboy homo-erotic (but denied) love, and home-skewling mobile home love, and more about eviloution, and how we love to force kids to worship the Bible.

  38. ForTruth says:

Allow people to post pictures again. I like pictures.

  39. Democrat Soldier says:

#25 – “#16, true, but you hate people hate Bush AND America…” Comment by Liberals Heart Terrorists — February 2, 2007 @ 2:34 pm

Lies, lies, lies, yeahh! (Thomson Twins)

Really, did I hate America when I was serving in the US Army? Why do YOU hate America so much to slam Veterans?

When did YOU do service for our country by enlisting in the military?

  40. Jason M. Hendler says:

I second what WC said in #13 ….

I don’t intend to threadjack, but when you have 3 or 4 threads on one subject, and ignore some of the most startling events of the day, then I have no other choice.

For instance, when John Kerry called our troops stupid, you didn’t provide any thread, so most other threads got jacked.

  41. Jet Mech says:

    Comment by Liberals Heart Terrorists

Like this inflammatory person. They say nothing of value, they just spew Faux rhetoric. This person accuses everyone of hating America and knows not a single soul here. Its opinionated projectionism and serves no purpose.

It is a pundits parakeet warbling nonsensical claptrap. Yet you allow this lice infested war monger to continue it’s ill gotten bloviations to no end.

  42. sbj says:

I would love to see the beginnings of a focused and intensive campaign to repudiate any and all politicians and media orgainizations that either support or provide tacit cover for the Bush regime’s insane agenda for attacking Iran. I think this may be the most important task we in the blogosphere might be able to have a positive influence with.

Democratic electoral victories in congress will be worse than meaningless if the leadership of that party, along with a despicable corporate media, enables this insanity of war with Iran to be implemented. Such an event will establish the Democratic party’s “joint and co-equal” ownership of the debacle and will destroy the party for decades to come. And it will signal to the rest of the world that, in truth, the differences between the major political parties in the US are functionally meaningless; that there is in fact no “opposition party” worthy of the title on which to pin our hopes for stopping the neocon juggernaut.

Surely one of you major blogs would be the best place to begin such an effort to establish an unequivocal and unified opposition to any and all who seek to be equivocal on this matter either in the press or in the political arena.

  43. Jet Mech says:

The fact is GOP Hearts Terrorists your boy Bush and Bremer have spent billions to free these terrorists and to create a democracy over there. a huge welfare state, yet you call it war. Laura Bush was building a hospital over their for chrissakes to the tune of 60 million.

Yes free health care for ‘terrorists’ as you say. Billions of dollars that aren’t even in the budget.

  44. Bruce Gorton says:

    LHT

Sure the December figures where revised upwards. Lots of people hire extra staff over December to deal with the Christmas rush, and the fact that a lot of staff go on leave over that period.

January however, normally a slow month for any sort of spending, fell below expectations.

Further, interest rates grew – indebtedness is up and your various gloating points such as the “Unemployment rate” (Which only counts those getting benefits as unemployed, and any sort of a job, permanent or part-time as employed) are getting more and more sickly looking. Even America’s manufacturing is down, and don’t tell me the service sector is where it is at, because ultimately those services you could export are being outsourced (Chiefly to India and, ahem, South Africa.)

So while you might think I sound stupid or whatever, the fact is that I know what I am talking about and your side of the aisle is looking progressively worse and worse.

Heck, TP didn’t cover this but I am sure you read about it somewhere: GW urging the Democrat led congress to raise taxes to pay off the deficit, which is precisely what the “America hatin’ lib’ruls” said would happen back when Bush cut taxes in the first place. You righties were trying to argue that cutting taxes upped income for a long time (Which doesn’t make common sense) and where is that argument now?

The truth of the whole matter is this: Your economic theory has hurt America, your foreign policy has hurt America, your enviromental policy has hurt America, your legal policies have hurt America, your flipping zoning policies have hurt America, and you come and call those of us who spoke out against all of your bad ideas anti-America?

  45. Technodaoist says:

Put me down for a user registration / administration system.

The format is good, and the information credible… But if your goal is to discuss progress you need to do something about the trolls and name-hijackers.

I believe you could answer a lot of people’s ‘content’ issues if you had a way to accept user-submitted links / stories. You cover a lot of topics and have usually had a depth to info that other blogs/sites lack, but sometimes things slip through – inevitable, but if you have a user base to catch and submit…

Thanks and keep up the good work.

  46. Jason M. Hendler says:

Sheesh, listen to you guys demand registration ….

How about you put your name behind your statements, like I do ….

  47. buzzbomb says:

Hendler, I don’t remember their being a thread when Bush joked about not being able to find the WMD’s while people were being killed looking for them. Maybe I’m wrong and I really don’t give a rats ass what John Kerry says, but who is worse?

TP is an awesome site. The name jacking is my biggest complaint, it just makes things either really weird or just plain assinine.

  48. stonehinge says:

#30 – agreed, Kos provides a very good model. HuffPo is another.

It would be a great step forward to create more of a community environment. To do that, registration is essential, there must be a means to flag abusive posts coupled with an algorithm for banning posts flagged for abuse, and perhaps a limit on the length of any post with intent to foil cut ‘n paste attacks.

In addition, I think the site administration should reconsider their stance vis-a-vis the growing dissent with the polices and practices which define the Israeli-American alliance.

Thanks for all the efforts in bringing the site to it’s current state and best wishes for the future.

  49. wormburner says:

In the U.S., at least, it seems bloggers are free to express certain negative opinions about another person in their blogs anonymously, and their ISPs can refuse to reveal who they are, even when sued by the person who claims he’s been defamed by them – however, if what they said could be shown to be basically defamatory, e.g. if they said their negative statements were facts rather than personal opinions, the ISP could be forced to disclose their identities.

In a case decided earlier this week, the Delaware Supreme Court thought that, in the interests of freedom of speech, it wasn’t enough for the accuser (a local public official) to say he had a “legitimate, good faith basis” for his defamation claim, because it would too easy for people to gag others by threatening to sue, or use knowledge of the bloggers’ identities for intimidation or revenge, even when the claim was trivial: “The possibility of losing anonymity in a future lawsuit could intimidate anonymous posters into self-censoring their comments or simply not commenting at all”.

The court will order ISPs to reveal who the bloggers are, though, if the accuser can meet a “summary judgment” standard of proof – essentially, make out the basic elements of a defamation case. The most important element is that the challenged statement isn’t legally considered defamatory (even if it’s negative or critical), if it is an expression of opinion, as opposed to a statement of fact.

It’s good that the court recognised the importance of anonymity to freedom of speech and also that most bloggers only express opinions, they don’t claim to state facts: “chat rooms and blogs are generally not as reliable as the Wall Street Journal Online. Blogs and chat rooms tend to be vehicles for the expression of opinions; by their very nature, they are not a source of facts or data upon which a reasonable person would rely.” Also, the court pointed out a unique feature of the internet, that “a person wronged by statements of an anonymous poster can respond instantly, can respond to the allegedly defamatory statements on the same site or blog, and thus, can, almost contemporaneously, respond to the same audience that initially read the allegedly defamatory statements. The plaintiff can thereby easily correct any misstatements or falsehoods, respond to character attacks, and generally set the record straight. This unique feature of internet communications allows a potential plaintiff ready access to mitigate the harm, if any, he has suffered to his reputation as a result of an anonymous defendant’s allegedly defamatory statements made on an internet blog or in a chat room.”

(Via Out-law, which also quoted a lawyer with Public Citizen as saying: “The court’s determination to require sufficient evidence before a critic is outed will go a long way toward reassuring citizens that they remain free to anonymously criticise public officials.”)

In the UK, though, it seems it’s still not entirely clear to what extent bloggers can be legally liable for what they blog, with the risk of being done for copyright violation (there is no proper right to “fair use” here, unlike in the USA) as well as defamation. Obviously all this is becoming increasingly important and topical. The UK government recently consulted on the possibility of extending protection from legal liability to hyperlinkers, search engines etc, and it’s interesting that Google are lobbying Washington on matters such as copyright and “intermediary liability” for search engines. I hope someone equally powerful will be lobbying the powers that be here in the UK and Europe. After all, the internet knows no borders, and search engines could just as easily be sued here as in the USA. Let’s hope they bring some clarity soon, and strike a fair balance between protecting bloggers and protecting who and what they blog about.

  50. Jet Mech says:

Bush is spending billions in Iraq, he has puchased a welfare state full of terrorists GOP Hearts Terrorists, and he has given these terrorists your money, your tax dollars to rebuild power plants and water systems, repainted and refurbished shcools, a hospital named after Laura Bush to provide free healthcare to what you call “terrorists”

You own a state of 25 million ‘terrorists’ Liberal Hearts and you can thank no one other than your guy. He called it a ‘freedom operation’, to free these people, you call ‘terrorists’ from a oppressive leader.

No wonder they don’t want to call it war, it’s a huge failed democratic experiment bought by the GOP.

Don’t go away mad Liberal Hearts Terrorists, hypocrite, just go away, and take your corrupt GOP terror team with you.

  51. Jason M. Hendler says:

    #47, buzz,

It is NOT about your personal views, but about a single news story that dominated the news for days, which wasn’t given a single thread.

As for Kos, I DO love the nested comments, so that it is easier to consolidate individual debates.

  52. Chris says:

My only suggestion would be to require registration. This has taken over as my favorite daily news site, and I wouldn’t want to change a thing about the regular day to day blogs. Registration would enable a better environment for everyone IMHO.

  53. Spudge_Boy says:

For instance, when John Kerry called our troops stupid, you didn’t provide any thread, so most other threads got jacked.

    Comment by Jason M. Hendler — February 2, 2007 @ 2:52 pm

It was a slip, but in that slip he said the TROOPS are UNEDUCATED not stupid, which is the truth or they would be OFFICERS. You would know that if you had any military experience.

Most TROOPS go into the military to get a college education in order to get EDUCATED.

  54. Spudge_Boy says:

How about you put your name behind your statements, like I do ….

    Comment by Jason M. Hendler — February 2, 2007 @ 3:03 pm

And we are supposed to believe that is your real name, because you say so. Ha, we don’t believe anything else you say.

  55. Jet Mech says:

If George were to spend 245 billion on our own country you GrOPers would start wailing like stuck pigs, Yet trillions will be spent before this is over on people that you say you hate and that you call terrorists.

    Really WTF?

  56. Briseadh na Faire says:

I think TP needs to zero in on the Democrats this year. Trashing the oppo is a great way to gain power (especially when they are down), but not a good way to keep it. People are looking to Democrats for answers right now (scary, I know) and trashing Bush isn’t going to carry the day.

    Comment by Liberals Heart Terrorists — February 2, 2007 @ 2:24 pm

You have a valid point here, but your partisan language masks it.

It should not be about going after Democrats or Republicans, but acting as a continual watchdog for progress.

Just as we are hearing some very postive remarks from some Republicans, we are also hearing some very discouraging remards from some Democrats.

The focus on PROGRESS can and should cut across Party lines.

As for Bush….well, he can still lead us into WWIII, so I’d say we’re not done with him just yet.

  57. dlet says:

It is NOT about your personal views, but about a single news story that dominated the news for days, which wasn’t given a single thread.

    Comment by Jason M. Hendler

Just because it dominated Drudgery doesn’t mean it was a factual account of what happened. That “story” was opinion driven and debunked as a mispoken joke. Do you also wonder why TP doesn’t post stories about the climate change hoax since it dominates Drudgery also?

  58. Jason M. Hendler says:

    #57, dlet,

Again, you miss the point, there was NO thread in which to discuss it, and resulted in other threads getting jacked.

  59. Bruce Gorton says:

Interest rates should have read inflation rates (Dual fights going on, one about SA, one about USA.)

  60. Jet Mech says:

The hypocrisy of the Pro-GrOPers here is mind boggling. They don’t want to give their own citizens a fair wage, much less a Hospital, yet they will spend Billions, to trillions, to free the very people they hate and now call terrorists and to rebuild their infrastructure?

HYPOCRITES, You say liberals hate America for wanting to raise min wage and for wanting to bring the troops home from a botched experiment in freedom and democracy? And wanting Americans to have a good education?

Schools for Iraqi ‘terrorists’ as the GrOPers say.
No Child Left Behind for American children, which is a failure. And you GrOPes have the gall to say liberals hate America?

I am of want to punch a GOP right dead smack in his lying ass hypocritical grill.

    Im outta here.

  61. Benjamin says:

Trolls are a real problem. Perhaps there should be a rating system that “hides” comments with low ratings (in addition to registering)

  62. Jet Mech says:

Again, you miss the point, there was NO thread in which to discuss it, and resulted in other threads getting jacked.
    Comment by Jason M. Hendler

Jason they only have 4 people working here, how do you expect them to cover every news item? Aren’t you a little old to thread jack?

  63. Spudge_Boy says:

Again, you miss the point, there was NO thread in which to discuss it, and resulted in other threads getting jacked.

    Comment by Jason M. Hendler — February 2, 2007 @ 3:19 pm

Again, there was no reason to have a post on a topic that was debunked the minute Fox started the rumors.

  64. wormburner says:

Citizen journalists and writers have become common place on the web. Perhaps you are considering blogging, but are unsure of how to enter the world of online journaling. As the medium has grown, I thought it might be a good idea to put together some general guidelines for new bloggers and reminders to veteran bloggers about blogging practices.

There is no Emily Post in blogging that offers etiquette advice, or a Miss Manners that details appropriate behavior. That does not mean there are not acceptable and unacceptable actions that bloggers should take. In order to efficiently communicate as a blogger on the Internet, it is critical to understand the unwritten rules of blogging etiquette.

If you copy another blog’s post should you link to them?

Yes, blog manners dictates that you make every effort to credit the original source of the blog post, this should be done through a link. The link should not contain the “nofollow” tag. Generally speaking the commentary about the quoted post, should be at least as long as the post that is copied.

How much can you quote of another persons blog post?

Fair use allows for posts or portions of posts to be quoted, but it is generally good practice to only quote what is necessary to retain the context of the post. When posting an excerpt from someone else, it is imperative that the context of the post remain intact.

If someone complains about having a blog post copied, what should you do?

The appropriate course of action would be to remove the offending post and replace it with text that explains why the post was removed. Even if you feel the post was simply fair use, and not a copyright violation, net courtesy dictates that you respect the wishes of the original poster and remove the content.

Why should you credit your sources?

Always credit the sources of your information. Attribution is important, it not only extends your credibility but it also will help build your channel for future content. Sources seeing that you give appropriate attribution will often reward you with additional information in the future.

    How do I validate information?

As a blogger, reputation is everything. All items should be confirmed prior to posting. Consider using two sources to verify that information is accurate prior to posting. Also always use credible sources. Second sourcing and relying on credible sources will ensure that posts are accurate.

I made a mistake, what should I do?

If you have a change of heart, or posted something that is not 100% accurate, apologize to your readers and correct the information as soon as possible. Not only is it the right thing to do, but often feeds or blog posts are syndicated and unless a correction is made the words could perpetuate unchecked. If the mistake occurs in a blog post in addition to posting an apology, go back to the original post and strikeout the incorrect content and add a comment indicating why the post has been changed.

How should my posts be formatted?

Break posts into readable chunks. Generally the best posts are broken into multiple paragraphs. Be careful not to alienate readers by using ALL CAPS, this is considered “shouting” online and is thought of as very rude.

Do I have to use proper grammar in by blog?

Proper grammar matters, grammar and spelling may be inconsequential when instant messaging with your friends but blogs, immortalize your words, the Internet is becoming an archive for the past. Appropriate grammar should always be used when blogging or posting to an RSS feed.

What does off the record really mean?

Always respect your sources. If you are told something “off the record” do not report about it, post it or share it with anyone.

    What exactly is copywritten?

Any creative works are copywritten. In the US and many other countriesm, even if the creator does not apply for a copyright, the creative works are protected by the copyright laws the moment the creative work is created. The expectations were about 50,000 more then the announced figures. Admittedly in December the figures were adjusted upwards by a fair chunk of that, but 111,000 was well below expectations.

Further, unemployment rates, generally touted on the right, rose slightly and inflation went up at the same time.

On a more positive note so did wages, slightly.

Today’s jobs report was not a positive one. Currencies across the world (Including the rand) have firmed on today’s jobs report. It is something you guys need to keep an eye on.

It was only big news for retarded right wingers who have no military experience, so they don’t have the real life experience to know that the troops are not educated. This is political correctness gone out of control.

Last Halloween, I went out with the kids and some neighbors. One of there sons had just gone off to join the military, because in her words “he doesn’t have a college degree and can’t get a real job, so he didn’t have a choice. She is a big right winger nut job like you. She brought this story up and all of the adults start oooing and ahhhing at what she said, until I brought up the fact that she told me that her son was uneducated and asked her why she was offended to here the truth even though that is not what Kerry intended to say. She just started stuttering and yammering as all of the other adults in the group agreed with me 100%, because my right wing whacko neighbor had told all of them that her son didn’t have an education.

You are wrong JMH, but I don’t expect you to change you crazy mind.

I am guessing it would clean up 95% of the problems here at TP.

  83. Krazny says:

US soldiers are often those who want an education, but cannot find the way to pay for it, besides the GI bill. Saying they are stupid isn’t true, saying they may be not come from elite households, and attended private school would be closer to the truth. Hell the recent army ads show minority kids talking about going to college via the army.

#6 comment by one “barfly” suggests that TP do some legwork Social Security solvency solutions, particularly from the perspective of eliminating the cap on payroll deductions. Would just this alone solve the problem? As it now stands lower income people pay out proportionately more of their wages for SS than those with higher incomes creating an inequity of sorts…we are now asking that everyone share the same burden of having 100% of their wages taxed for SS.

  86. hacker bob says:

    Dealing with rudeness

Much of what looks like rudeness in hacker circles is not intended to give offense. Rather, it’s the product of the direct, cut-through-the-bullshit communications style that is natural to people who are more concerned about solving problems than making others feel warm and fuzzy.

When you perceive rudeness, try to react calmly. If someone is really acting out, it is very likely a senior person on the list or newsgroup or forum will call him or her on it. If that doesn’t happen and you lose your temper, it is likely that the person you lose it at was behaving within the hacker community’s norms and you will be considered at fault. This will hurt your chances of getting the information or help you want.

On the other hand, you will occasionally run across rudeness and posturing that is quite gratuitous. The flip-side of the above is that it is acceptable form to slam real offenders quite hard, dissecting their misbehavior with a sharp verbal scalpel. Be very, very sure of your ground before you try this, however. The line between correcting an incivility and starting a pointless flamewar is thin enough that hackers themselves not infrequently blunder across it; if you are a newbie or an outsider, your chances of avoiding such a blunder are low. If you’re after information rather than entertainment, it’s better to keep your fingers off the keyboard than to risk this.

(Some people assert that many hackers have a mild form of autism or Asperger’s Syndrome, and are actually missing some of the brain circuitry that lubricates “normal” human social interaction. This may or may not be true. If you are not a hacker yourself, it may help you cope with our eccentricities if you think of us as being brain-damaged. Go right ahead. We won’t care; we like being whatever it is we are, and generally have a healthy skepticism about clinical labels.)

In the next section, we’ll talk about a different issue; the kind of “rudeness” you’ll see when you misbehave.
On Not Reacting Like A Loser

Odds are you’ll screw up a few times on hacker community forums — in ways detailed in this article, or similar. And you’ll be told exactly how you screwed up, possibly with colourful asides. In public.

When this happens, the worst thing you can do is whine about the experience, claim to have been verbally assaulted, demand apologies, scream, hold your breath, threaten lawsuits, complain to people’s employers, leave the toilet seat up, etc. Instead, here’s what you do:

Get over it. It’s normal. In fact, it’s healthy and appropriate.

Community standards do not maintain themselves: They’re maintained by people actively applying them, visibly, in public. Don’t whine that all criticism should have been conveyed via private e-mail: That’s not how it works. Nor is it useful to insist you’ve been personally insulted when someone comments that one of your claims was wrong, or that his views differ. Those are loser attitudes.

There have been hacker forums where, out of some misguided sense of hyper-courtesy, participants are banned from posting any fault-finding with another’s posts, and told “Don’t say anything if you’re unwilling to help the user.” The resulting departure of clueful participants to elsewhere causes them to descend into meaningless babble and become useless as technical forums.

Exaggeratedly “friendly” (in that fashion) or useful: Pick one.

Remember: When that hacker tells you that you’ve screwed up, and (no matter how gruffly) tells you not to do it again, he’s acting out of concern for (1) you and (2) his community. It would be much easier for him to ignore you and filter you out of his life. If you can’t manage to be grateful, at least have a little dignity, don’t whine, and don’t expect to be treated like a fragile doll just because you’re a newcomer with a theatrically hypersensitive soul and delusions of entitlement.

Sometimes people will attack you personally, flame without an apparent reason, etc., even if you don’t screw up (or have only screwed up in their imagination). In this case, complaining is the way to really screw up.

These flamers are either lamers who don’t have a clue but believe themselves to be experts, or would-be psychologists testing whether you’ll screw up. The other readers either ignore them, or find ways to deal with them on their own. The flamers’ behavior creates problems for themselves, which don’t have to concern you.

Don’t let yourself be drawn into a flamewar, either. Most flames are best ignored — after you’ve checked whether they are really flames, not pointers to the ways in which you have screwed up, and not cleverly ciphered answers to your real question (this happens as well).

You’re having a fine blog here and I thoroughly enjoy it. The comments section, too, even if some of the trolls are tiring.

Personally I don’t think I ever had one of my comments deleted, usually they show up after a while. For deleted comments, Crooksandliars shows the comment and the name and the commenter, and usually the site monitors inform the readers of the reason why it was deleted. Maybe that is an option.

As the US is entering one of the longest election trails ever, it might be a good idea to have fixed weekly post on who voted for what in Congress and Senate. It is doubly important, because I think most here want to see which politicians (of all colours) have heeded the voters’ call last November and which politicians are not. So they know, they are being watched closely.

Again, thanks for all your efforts and have a nice retreat!

Don’t change a damn thing, if you ask me…your blog is one of the best. Every biggie out there links to you EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Just keep up the good work and terrific writing. It’s unbiased, hard-hitting, and just what we need.

    HEY MICHAEL….

pick a topic, Michael. State your position. Write a persuasive essay. Post it to my attention. Let’s see if you can do better than my 8th grade students.

I believe the query was to see what we liked, disliked, and would suggest for changes or??? with the TP site. I really enjoy the site, and link to it daily. The trolls get old (like Michael), and I think not responding to them directly is the best medicine. I would be interested to learn more about a registration system that could benefit the content and MAYBE discourage Michael-like Trolls.

I really appreciated and enjoyed Briseadh’s comment and challenge to Michael, as he really shows his intelligence with his empty tit for tat blabber. TP, keep up the good work and don’t lose heart. Just knowing you folks are reviewing what you do and brainstorming away from the fray of the daily posts confirms my respect for you all.

Thank you for a progressive blog. I hope you will address, in your restructured blog, these concerns: (1) exiting Iraq ASAP; (2) not attacking Iran; (3) fair elections and counting of votes; (4) reducing disparities in income and wealth; (5) effective medical care; (6) reducing dependency on fossil fuels; and (7) reducing global warming.

Aloha ~~~ Ozzie Maland ~~~ San Diego
