Retired generals call Iran war ‘disastrous.’

“Three former high-ranking U.S. military officers have called for Britain to help defuse the crisis over Iran’s nuclear program, saying military action against Tehran would be a disaster for the region“:

In a letter to the Sunday Times newspaper, the three former officers urged President Bush to open talks, “without preconditions,” with the Iranian government in a bid to find a diplomatic solution.

The signatories were retired Lt. Gen. Robert G. Gard, a senior military fellow at the Center for Arms Control and Nonproliferation in Washington, D.C.; retired Marine Gen. Joseph P. Hoar, former head of U.S. Central Command; and Vice Adm. Jack Shanahan, former director of the Center for Defense Information.

The officers said an attack “would have disastrous consequences for security in the region, coalition forces in Iraq and would further exacerbate regional and global tensions.”

“The current crisis must be resolved through diplomacy,” they said.

Well, good luck, Generals, George has a “mind” of his own, you know. Maybe a coup uprising would be of some benefit, at this juncture. George just doesn’t seem to be repsonding well to his drugs.

    Bush won’t listen.

  3. donut wrangler says:

Okay so they dig up 3 old dinosaur *retired generals to say it is a disaster. They are not today`s military. That is why they are retired. They should make a military law whereby you lose your pension and benefits for making off the cuf statements like these.

I would also venture to guess these three generals they marched out into the limelight are Murtha and Hoyer cronies.

Your credibility is already waining with me TP. Need you make my mind up for me in such a flamboyant and vacant manner?

These three generals are the ebst you can do? These three has
beens and washed out dinosaurs from another era?

War is technically very sanitary and very technologically advanced these days. Most warfare is one in the air. Just because we have house to house civil war in Iraq is no excuse to march these thress generals out and foist their ancient opinion upon the rest of us. I know this is tempting to do because of your stance on the war and all.

    But these three?

Talk about unqualified to comment let alone try to open their mouths and shape policy. This is a Murtha and Hoyer propaganda stunt.

And a cheap one at that.

    Those three?

    Whew!

  4. Jay Randal says:

Yep the Iraq Fiasco War is a complete disaster, but the Congress is too spineless to end it!

  5. Liberal in New Mexico says:

George just doesn’t seem to be repsonding… responding… oh, drat – George is all f-ed up and if he had half a brain, he’d be dangerous, dammit! Now, go get his mother. He’s afraid of her and will do whatever the old bat says to do.

  6. Jay Randal says:

donut lol > the Generals who kiss up to Bush are the worst kind. There is nothing worse than suck-up Generals!

On Thursday, January 11, 2007, Congressman Ron Paul of Texas (R) (but he’s really a Libertarian) hit the house floor and put on the record what many Americans fear might be coming down the pipe; a new Gulf of Tonkin incident to initiate a shooting war with Iran.

“The truth is that Iran, like Iraq, is a third-world nation without a significant military. Nothing in history hints that she is likely to invade a neighboring country, let alone America or Israel. I am concerned, however, that a contrived Gulf of Tonkin- type incident may occur to gain popular support for an attack on Iran.”

  15. VerbalKint says:

Why just three retired generals? Why not three hundred? A number that large would cause quite a splash, and put a lot of pressure on Republicans to do something about Bush (i.e. impeach).

  16. KRank says:

Well, just having people with military experience say some plan of Bush’s is a bad idea, should be enough to get him to forge ahead with it.

There’s something of the “I’ll show them — I’ll show EVERYBODY” in this man’s psychology. Unfortunately, he’s rolling the dice with our nation’s future on the line. And he’s coming up snake eyes consistently.

An anyway, how much “wrangling” does a donut require?

  17. VerbalKint says:

By the way, donut brain, these generals can hardly be called wash outs. They were all top military leaders and didn’t wash out of anything. Hoar was head of CENTCOM for the first three years after Gulf War I, which I would call relevent experience.

So tell me, wrangler, just what are your qualifications that allow you to speak against these men? Use as much space as needed.

There have been planty of retired generals that have joined the majority of Americans that see through this weak, pitiful loser of a President. Put yourself in the shoes of a retired general, your whole career has been supporting the Commander in Chief. I find it amazing and damning to Boy George for ANY of them to speak against the idiot.

But damned he is with the souls of our soldiers his curse, and damned we are if we don’t stop him from warring against Iran.

Seems we heard that before the Iraq war. Shock and Awe. That war was not won thru the air and is now being battled on the ground. Iran is three times the size of Iraq.

  21. VerbalKint says:

There is nothing “sanitary” about war. What a bizarre concept. Donut brain has confused the Fox News portrayal of the war with the actual war. This line alone is a dead giveaway that we are dealing with a koolaid drinker.

He has written for well-known periodicals that focus on military and international affairs and lectured widely at U.S. and international universities and colleges, and at academic conferences. He is a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies and the Council on Foreign Relations. In 1996, General Gard joined Veterans for America as its military advisor.

Diplomacy doesn’t exist in George Bush’s very small “black and white” world. Bush uses evil methods in his war against evil and he’s completely unconscious of the fact that this is what he’s doing. Maybe George will learn to be an adult someday and learn to live in an adult world where people try to get along with each other through discussion and compromise. George Bush is a very, very dangerous simple-minded person.

I have to admit one thing. A Presidency cannot be fashioned after The West Wing episodes and cannot always be as entertaining as you or I may like it. Politics is a serious business. It is a hard nose free for all, all of the time these days, not just around election time as it used to be.

I must say I agree with Hagle when he says “If you wanted an easy job with no hazards, why are you in politics”

The contributors to this blog could themselves benefit from and pattern their conduct more after Hagle and less like Karl Rove.

Can we possibly get a reporter to ask a follow-up question when our leading Democratic presidential aspirants (three of whom are also current Senators) say “all options are on the table” regarding Iran???
    Here are 2 suggestions:

    1) Is one of the “options” a preemptive military strike against Iran?

    2) Well, if you can’t discuss specifics, here is a general question. Our official current foreign policy includes preemptive war. Do you accept or repudiate the Bush doctrine of preemptive war?

Clark has repudiated preemptive war. The others seem to be hedging. How about it, reporters? This is kinda important, you know?

President Bush is sending Congress a $2.9 trillion budget that would provide billions of dollars for the war in Iraq, make his first-term tax cuts permanent and achieve a budget surplus three years after he leaves office.

This includes oil theft from Iraq and iran

I really hope you Americans gets hit by Nerve gas – I am really pissed with all of you

  37. Tobey Tall says:

the Democrats who now control Congress at least trying to avert this catastrophe, which may be the last? No — because they fully share the belief in American “exceptionalism” and in our “right” to worldwide hegemony. Is there even one prominent voice in America regularly explaining the horror of what we have already done, and what we may still do? No.

If this remains unchanged, and if we launch another war of blatant, unforgivable aggression, we will deserve everything we get — and more. Historians, if there are any in the years to come, will see what we were and what we did, and they will judge us accordingly.

I honestly don’t have the slightest idea what people are waiting for, before they finally begin to take action against the still worse nightmare that might be coming. I think most people must tell themselves that it won’t be “that bad.” But it will be; it will probably be worse than anything we can imagine.

The blindness and passivity of most Americans is unrelenting. It appears to be unchangeable. If we continue down this road, I doubt that even God will forgive us.

Those crazy suicide human waves would charge all over like when Iraq invaded Iran the first time. Iran is a seriouse threat, and if we go to war it will be a SERIOUSE air and navy assult. I cannot see the US trying to send in an invasion force. God, it would take at LEAST 300,000 american boys and thousands of lives would be lost. If you think that the Iraqies can put up a good insurgancey tahn i assure you the iranians can do 5X better. Their hatred for the west is long and deepfounded ever since the US supported the Shaw.
