Fox News is prepping a new late-night talk show called “Red Eye” hosted by Greg Gutfeld, the former editor of UK Maxim (and Huffington Post blogger) who previously led a web-based chat show for FoxNews.com.
In a clip of “Red Eye” that was leaked online, Gutfeld leads a discussion about Sen. Joe Biden’s (D-DE) racially-insensitive claim that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) is “the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean.” In the clip, Gutfeld calls Biden “my favorite person in the world,” and asks, “Isn’t [Biden] saying what every liberal is thinking,” that “Obama is acceptable because he’s…a non-threatening black man.”
Also, panelists on the show rejected the notion that Obama is the first “clean” mainstream African-American. “Well, I think Oprah’s clean,” one said. “She does douche,” said another. He added, “I was told I was allowed to say the D-word,” suggesting the comment had been cleared by Fox officials. Watch it:
Red Eye is “one of two recent initiatives that appear to be attempts to broaden the definition of a news channel.” The other is “The Half-Hour News Hour,” a right-leaning version of the Daily Show, which will guest-star Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter as the President and Vice President in an early episode.
Transcript:
HOST 1: Sen. Joe Biden, who is now, I think, my favorite person in the world, he’s declared his run for the presidency, but at the same time had some amazing words, which I have here on this card, for Barack Obama, describing him as the first mainstream African-American who is articulate, bright, and clean.
HOST 2: Oh. Well, I think Oprah’s clean.
HOST 1: Yeah, but no, running for president. Oprah’s not running for president. But Jesse Jackson is clean.
HOST 3: She does douche. (Laughter) I was told I was allowed to say the D-word!
HOST: Alright.
HOST 3: You will continue to roll, my friend.
HOST 1: Ok, the thing about what Joe Biden says is, isn’t he saying what every liberal is thinking? That Obama is acceptable because he’s basically like Lionel Jefferson, and he’s not threatening — that’s the son.
HOST 4: Is he the one who sang “All Night Long”?
HOST 1: No, no, that was Lionel Richie, also a non-threatening black man. Liberals have this secret racism about blacks. They’ve got to be light-skinned in order to be acceptable.
So this is what passes for humor on the right? As listenable as xtian rock.
February 5th, 2007 at 10:23 amJust ask Dennis Miller what happens when a righty attempts humor.
February 5th, 2007 at 10:24 amI think I’m gonna be sick.
February 5th, 2007 at 10:25 amI grew up in an all-white area. I mean lilly white. We were pure white bread. And I’m a good ol’ lefty, but I think that is why white folk like Obama. He isn’t threatening. For white folk whose only exposure to Black America is through their teenagers’ rap music collection and the nightly news roundup of folks arrested, Obama is a big difference. I know ’cause I lived that life, man. You look at all-white areas — especially areas that have always been all white — Obama doesn’t fit the mold of the stereotype. Doesn’t mean it’s right. It’s just America.
February 5th, 2007 at 10:26 amAbout time. Some people watch the Daily Show and think that garbage is real news. It is nice to get the other side. I hope it does as well as FOX news and show the lefties what the country likes to watch.
February 5th, 2007 at 10:27 am…just lost my cookies…
February 5th, 2007 at 10:28 am#2- Absolutely! Miller gives me the heebie-jeebies with his holier-than-thou bullcrap. Miller and most of “his kind” prematurely assume they are so expert and so likeable. They’re wrong on both counts.
February 5th, 2007 at 10:30 amPuke on isle 5….
February 5th, 2007 at 10:33 amIsn’t Gutfield saying what every conservative is thinking, that “the Conservative base is running scared because they have always ignored minorities, which is obvious from their policies, yet here is a powerful African-American man and they’re not allowed to use the N-word, except behind closed doors.”
February 5th, 2007 at 10:33 amSorry, change that to clean up on #6
February 5th, 2007 at 10:34 amNot #2, #3. Leave the #s alone, you guys. Cut it out. Are YOU attempting humor?
February 5th, 2007 at 10:35 amBleeech! Get me to a toilet, gotta hurl!!
February 5th, 2007 at 10:39 amSorry, change that to clean up on #6
Comment by Sharon Cox
I thought there really was a mess on #5 - I thought your call for a clean-up there was legitimate.
February 5th, 2007 at 10:40 amMore lies about liberals. They just keep making things up - their minds are just wired that way.
February 5th, 2007 at 10:41 amWhat’s interesting is this show presents their weaknesses so clearly. They need to isolate themselves, surround themselves by likeminded thinkers, because contrary opinions would shatter their little self images. There will be no guest liberals at that round table, or if there are, the will be of the “fox faux” variety we are all familiar with.
This is their model to make “hate” cool. “Oprah is clean because she douches?” Wow. Ugly stuff on any scale. I hope they keep this up, it’s great for us liberals.
“The Half-Hour News Hour,â€
Plagiarists even there. They’re ripping off the Canadian Broadcast Company’s “This Hour Has 22 Minutes”…. And as usual prolly making a complete bollix of their theft.
Cheers,
February 5th, 2007 at 10:43 amThis is great. I am all for giving a few of my tax dollars to transporting anyone that wants to join the crusade to the holy land so they can bomb the crap out of each other! How exciting it must be to realize one’s lifelong dream of actually killing people that look different with your god or prophet of choice right there with you! They will be able to choose a cornucopia of weapons to decimate their religious enemies, all paid for by US and Soviet taxpayers since the 1960’s!
Let’s do all we can so these people can meet one another and start the whoopee machine. Then the rest of us can enjoy this little hell on earth and get down to the business of peace.
February 5th, 2007 at 10:43 amBiden deserves all the ridicule he’s getting, but this brand of humor is awful. There’s no need to drag Oprah into this, or to be vulger. I lean to the right, and I don’t find this funny at all.
February 5th, 2007 at 10:45 amHow am I not supposed to have a lot of fun with this thread?
February 5th, 2007 at 10:47 amif anybody was ever unclear about what the term ‘projection’ meant, just read the transcript.
February 5th, 2007 at 10:48 am#14. Good points. Why would Fox need a true liberal on their roundtable when they can just make up what the think the liberals’ position is, then shoot holes in it? That’s easier.
February 5th, 2007 at 10:49 amFOX should know all about douche, they’ve been holding the bag for Bush for six years.
February 5th, 2007 at 10:52 amI have not been keeping up on the Biden bit… I have been busy this week.. what is the big deal about what he said? Obama has not been caught with $100K in his freezer … that seems to be a contrast between “clean” and not clean… he has not been on the news for getting in a shoving match with the capital police… though I am pretty sure there are more than just 2 blacks in congress and the rest seem to be pretty “clean” also…
February 5th, 2007 at 10:55 amI am guessing that this show is loosely based on Bill Maher, and politically incorrect. I would also guess, that the producers don’t “get” The Daily show. I look forward to this flopping like fish out of water.
February 5th, 2007 at 10:57 amThis is the Fox answer to the Daily Show, the only problem is that the right wing doesn’t do irony very well. They usually resort to sheap shots. I suspect this show will be popular among the rich right wing frat boy crowd and few others.
February 5th, 2007 at 10:59 amOh, I’m so rooting for that right wing Daily Show. It’s gonna be soo awsomely funny, man. Heh heh, hee hee, huh huh… “Liberals have that secret racism. We have that overt one.” Heh heh.
Great channel. Great, great channel.
February 5th, 2007 at 10:59 amPLC….#22 That get’s my vote for good post……Add 2 more cup’s of vinegar Fox, you need it…Blessings
February 5th, 2007 at 10:59 amNO, Happy Guy, people do NOT think the Daily Show is news. They know it’s satire. It’s on the COMEDY CHANNEL, but maybe you didn’t realize that. On the other hand, people DO think Faux News is news, when it is the American version of Tass.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:01 am“The Half-Hour News Hour”??? Oh how very witty. How long until Dennis Miller appears?
Rush and Coulter? Together in the same place? Quick, call al Qaeda!
February 5th, 2007 at 11:03 amDidn’t MTV have a “Half-hour Comedy Hour” in the eighties? Shouldn’t an attempt at a comedy show NOT start out with a blatant rip-off?
Maybe it’s just me…
February 5th, 2007 at 11:04 am#4: I grew up in an all-white area. I mean lilly [sic] white. We were pure white bread. And I’m a good ol’ lefty, but I think that is why white folk like Obama. He isn’t threatening.
Thanks for the pop psychology. Silly me–I thought I liked Obama because he’s a smart, charismatic, and effective leader, and because he was courageous for opposing the war in Iraq from the beginning. Thank you for showing me the light.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:04 amI heard the show was on hiatus because Limbaugh’s and Coulter’s sheets weren’t back from the laundry. The laundry reported problems cleaning around the eyeholes.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:05 amHappy Guy
Other than the top of your head, what is your point?
February 5th, 2007 at 11:06 amThe only things that need to be “douched” is the White House : the 7 year Putrid stench eminating from Dumbya and His Bandits that have sold this country and Bad Sale of Goods (this phoney war on terrorism) and continue to hijack our children’s children’s future (civil liberties, financially, environmentally ETC) –
February 5th, 2007 at 11:08 am“Didn’t MTV have a “Half-hour Comedy Hour†in the eighties?”
i believe it was on the original version of comedy central [”Ha!”, i think] and involved john stewart and a female co-host.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:10 amThe only thing that need to be “douched†is the White House : the 7 year Putrid stench eminating from Dumbya and His Bandits that have sold this country a Bad Sale of Goods (this phoney war on terrorism) and continue to hijack our children’s children’s future (civil liberties, financially, environmentally ETC) –
February 5th, 2007 at 11:10 amThose fools shoud brush their teeth with the “D.”
February 5th, 2007 at 11:10 am“Well, I think Oprah’s clean,†one said. “She does douche,†said another.
******************************
There are no words strong enough for the rejoinder to the remark on Oprah — and the fact that a man said it only makes it worse (although it wouldn’t have been much better coming from a woman). It was tacky, vulgar, demeaning, inappropriate, and utterly beneath contempt — and then they actually laughed about it. Sick…just sick.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:11 amSome people watch the Daily Show and think that garbage is real news.
news flash: just because YOU are too stupid to differentiate satire from reality, doesn’t mean everyone else is that stupid as well.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:11 amIf you haven’t seen the Hillary Code Pink youtube, here it is. In an honest moment before we invaded Iraq, she laid out the reasons for going into Iraq, better than I can do it.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=pYATbsu2cP8
It’s fifteen minutes and doesn’t get substanative until minute 7 through the end. (But I have watched all 52 minutes of Veteran’s for Truth: 9/11; so you can do this)
Although you can disagree with our actions in Iraq, I hope this dispels the notion that Bush lied about the situation at the time or that there were (are still) good reasons to be in Iraq. Many here like to pretend that Bush demanded to go to Iraq alone (for no good reason) over the objections of many, especially Democrats. It wasn’t the case. We have selective memories. One more point: Clinton (Bill) in 1999 used many of the same justifications to bomb the aspirin factory in Baghdad(1999; before Bush) that were still concerns after Bush took office.
Please watch the code pink video. If you were (and are) truly against the war; you will be proud of the ladies of code pink.
Also, if think the war was wrong; Obama should be your candidate.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:14 amit took me all of 5 seconds on the google to find that ABC had a show titled “The Half-Hour Comedy Hour” in 1983. It was on the air about as long as Faux News’ version will be.
http://www.tv.com/ half-hour-comedy-hour/ show/ 35828/ summary.html
February 5th, 2007 at 11:14 amI don’t really get your point. Is this supposed to be a criticism of most white people? If Obama isn’t threatening to them because he’s not like the criminals they see on the news or the rappers their kids listen to, then most blacks would be palatable to them. It’s a pretty low bar. (I’m a big rap fan but there are few hip hop artists, white or black, who I think would make good politicians.)
Or are you trying to say that Obama’s not really a good candidate, and that his success is the result of some kind of affirmative action? That the only thing he has going for him is that he’s black and not threatening? I definitely don’t agree with that.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:15 amWhy can’t the conservatives understand that The Daily Show, and the Colbert Report, do not make fun of conservatives. Those shows make fun of the so called liberal media, and expose its conservative/GOP bias. That is why they are so funny. There really is no media for Fox News to make fun of.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:15 amThe difference between viewers of The Daily Show and anything on Faux Noise is that the viewers of The Daily show already know what’s in the news, and come to the Daily Show to witness its comic deconstruction; whereas, the viewers of Faux Noise come to those programs essentially ‘tabula rasa’, blank slates, ready to be inscribed with the “truth.”
it’s the difference, that is, between an audience and a congregation…
February 5th, 2007 at 11:18 am/
The only kind of right wing humour the is truly funny is the unintentional type generated by their words and actions; when the right attempts to be funny deliberately, it just lies there like a cold turd.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:23 am“i believe it was on the original version of comedy central [â€Ha!â€, i think] and involved john stewart and a female co-host.”
my bad, i was thinking of “short attention span theater”
February 5th, 2007 at 11:23 amHey everyone, look on the bright side: history has taught us that those who invoke the wrath of Oprah pay dearly. I think these (I have to say it) douchebags will come to regret their comments very soon.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:23 amWell, I’m sure the show will be a huge hit in Repub households. But, I don’t understand why a legitimate television station would want to cater to the “least common denominator” or weak link. Oh, yeah… I forgot… Fox isn’t legitimate at all. Maybe the network CEO should have DOUCHED HIMSELF after that bizarre sex act with his crazed board members.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:23 amI really believe this is all about the death throes of the rights weakening grip on power. Gutfeld has written some of the most vulgar, petty, and juvenile posts on Huffington Post. Readers regularly commented on this and requested “HuffPo” to remove him. He is worse than Glenn Beck. Very twisted. Rupert Murdoch is running scared….all the corporate media inmates know how to do, when cornered, is to become more of who they are….go on offense. Luckily for the sane people on the planet, they actually dig their own graves as the delicious Captin Queeg ( sp?:) moments continue to mount. They are unhinged and I’m glad to see it. This, in my view, is the beginningg of the end of a long phase of insanity in this country. Five years from now people will be shaking their heads in ( even more) wonder than they are now.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:28 amMaxim is basically Playboy minus the nudity, and the class (In other words, Playboy for stupid wussies.) It doesn’t exactly shock me that Fox News finds that sort of thing funny.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:29 amThe reason the show will fail is because its acerbic writers and hosts lack humility. Stewart and Colbert are quite adept at poking fun at themselves, which is one of the key reasons that they are so popular. These conservative gasbags would explode if someone tried to stick a pin in them.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:34 amFox apparently needs more inflammatory nonsense to boost it’s ratings. But this only proves that Rush and Coulter are comedians and not political consultants nor should their inane diatribes be considered as having any truth. They simply play on peoples opinionated bias.
When are they gonna try something new instead of raking the same old poop out of the same cat litter box?
February 5th, 2007 at 11:34 amAlso, if think the war was wrong; Obama should be your candidate.
Comment by paul
A network of people that involved the Saudis and Pakistanis were/are the supporters of Al Qeada. If we were out for vengence for 911 then we have been mislead and betrayed into a fighting a war against a people that did not do 911 to protect the oil kingdom of Saud and the military alliance with Pakistan. So basically the people we saw jumping out of those towers on 911 were less important than the relationship with the Saudis and Pakistanis.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:36 amit’s the difference, that is, between an audience and a congregation…

Amen.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:37 amOh…my…GAWD! As the line sinks, it still gets crossed, but wow, I can’t believe something like that would get said on Fox (well, maybe Kilmeade would have said it).
February 5th, 2007 at 11:38 amYet the freepers will parakeet the verbal claptrap of these talking heads as truth.Rush is a drug addict and Coulter a plagiarist yet they try to pass themselves off as conservatives, hawwww! if people can’t see thru the whorish ratings game then they need to go watch American Idle and stay out of the political spectrum.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:38 amAs a conservative and card-carrying neocon, I look forward to a show that will espouse right-wing ideology topped with generous dollops of humor and wit, and I object in the strongest possible terms to all of this liberal nonsense about our supposed lack of humor. To put this lie to rest once and for all, i would like to say to all of you lefties…er, uh…(scratch head, look around vacantly)…um, little help here?
February 5th, 2007 at 11:38 amThe conservative ideology is like this TV show…a bad joke.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:38 amThis is a pathetic attempt by righties trying to emulate “The Daily Show” and Colbert. I am sure the people at Comedy Central are quaking in their boots. As someone mentioned above, they don’t seem to understand the concept of irony that well.
On the bright side, people like Stewart and Colbert (not to mention folks on the web) will get a mountain of chuckles from their lame ass attempt at being funny.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:40 amDisgusting. FOX has no standards whatsoever.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:42 ampeople like Stewart and Colbert (not to mention folks on the web) will get a mountain of chuckles from their lame ass attempt at being funny.
I bet Stewart, Colbert, and (don’t forget) Olbermann will have a wealth of material for their own shows from the pathetic attempts of humor from the FOX noise machine.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:44 amRed Eye? LOL call it Brown Eye and it can be all about butt problems.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:44 amWell… what is there left to say? Red Eye is as destined to bomb as the current republican party.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:46 amTo put this lie to rest once and for all, i would like to say to all of you lefties…er, uh…(scratch head, look around vacantly)…um, little help here?
Comment by Ron the funny neocon
Heh.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:51 amAs a conservative and card-carrying neocon, I look forward to a show that will espouse right-wing ideology topped with generous dollops of humor and wit, and I object in the strongest possible terms to all of this liberal nonsense about our supposed lack of humor.
First off your a human first, an American second, a conservative (Christiam) third and fourth a Neocon (which are straussian liars by intent) Anne Coulter writing books about Godless liberals is not funny, it’s not even close to truth. Rush is a modern day Archie Bunker, which was a satirical comedy, was funny. Rush and his listeners can’t tell satire from racism from political ideology, hence they are not funny and as usual some ditto-head will come around prattling about how Rush is right.
I have no idea how this passes as conservative humour, its certainly not what Jesus would say or joke about.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:53 amTodays conservatism is organized hypocrisy just as this show will be. Hypocrisy is not or has ever been funny. Rush himself a drug addict only proves the hypocrisy of this crowd on non-comedians.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:55 am“Liberals have this secret racism about blacks. They’ve got to be light-skinned in order to be acceptable.”
Well, which is it? We embrace Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton or we only feel comfortable with light-skinned blacks? Can’t be both.
Comedy is about truth. Conservatives purposely avoid truth. Therefore, no funny.
February 5th, 2007 at 11:56 amWho here, meaning you conservative republican neo-cons, thinks Rush’s drug addiction is funny?
February 5th, 2007 at 11:57 amFox News doing a fake news show? Isn’t that kind of redundant?
February 5th, 2007 at 11:58 amBush said the very same thing about Obama!! - but only Biden is criticized!
February 5th, 2007 at 12:07 pmIf Stephen Colbert had presented his character in “Barat-style”, playing it out in public without the obvious Comedy Central backdrop, I would be willing to bet that he would have been fought over for appearances on Hannity, Rush, and O’Reilly. Then, FOX would probably have given him his own show on their network.
February 5th, 2007 at 12:09 pmSo, in shorter form, TV with all the deep insight and humor of Mallard Fillmore.
The Daily Show is funny because it’s a mirror to life. Conservatives get raked over the coals by the show because, simply, they’ve given them a hell of all lot to work with.
February 5th, 2007 at 12:12 pmWell, I don’t know about jokes, but this is from one of his parables:
“I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.†- Luke 18:14
I see lots of Pharisees on the Fox network, thumping their chests and not admitting any sin on their part.
February 5th, 2007 at 12:15 pmSo can we say Steve “Douchy” on Faux now?
February 5th, 2007 at 12:18 pmI never could understand why Ariana allowed this freak so much space on her blog.
February 5th, 2007 at 12:20 pmThose Pharisees also walk the halls of Congress, the Supreme Court, and the White House.
I cannot begin to express how badly I want my religion back from these users and abusers of faith.
February 5th, 2007 at 12:21 pmLionel Jefferson?!? Is this perhaps an indication of the last time he watched a TV show with a black person in it?
February 5th, 2007 at 12:32 pmLimbaugh and Coulter doing comedy. That is pretty funny.
Is Coulter going to be feeding babies into Bush’s meat grinder while Limbaugh makes fun of the chronically ill. Some Monty Python stuff like wearing a handkerchief hat, knotted on all four corners and giving speeches on the town square.
February 5th, 2007 at 12:44 pmBiden made plain stupid remark. No getting away from it!
Ok. I am very left of center but answer this:
if you get 15 people to call you and begin to chat, and 5 of them are are African-American, do you think you could pick them out without seeing them or knowing anything other than what they say on the phone? If so, how come?
This might be what Biden meant by articulate: they talk like him!
I love it that the liberals must rush to defend a dumb remark by a vbery bright guy.
February 5th, 2007 at 12:44 pmI thought everyone knew that Andrew Dice Clay was a parody of an ignorant, mysoginist bigot? Apparently Fox thinks not?
February 5th, 2007 at 12:46 pmOk, the thing about what Joe Biden says is, isn’t he saying what every liberal is thinking?
Um, no.
Who the f*** do they think voted for Jesse Jackson back in the day?
It is probably what the elitist punditocracy in DC is thinking, which the wingnutsosphere mistakes for “liberals”.
February 5th, 2007 at 12:58 pmI tried reading Gutfeld when he had a column at Huffingtonpost. He just wasn’t funny. Just like this.
February 5th, 2007 at 1:04 pmRush will act out brush clearing with a stryker assault vehicle, while Coulter applies layer upon layer upon layer of white makeup to her entire body.
February 5th, 2007 at 1:04 pmRed Eye Rocks!! I hope the show lasts forever! Go Fox News. Another mainstream media show the public at large can relate to. This show is a panacea for all of the depressive ills brought on by the war and democrats in general.
February 5th, 2007 at 1:04 pmclambellies
Yeah, except the guys who dragged you into the war were…
A Republican president (Coupled with his Republican staff.)
A Republican Senate.
A Republican Congress.
A Republican Supreme Court (Only two Democrats on that body.)
And last, but not least, a Republican press.
So the war has you down? Here is a little tip: Stop voting Republican, dumbass.
February 5th, 2007 at 1:14 pmThe bias against dark skin is an American bias not a liberal bias. When discrimination is practiced within the black community it is known as colorism.
If you can find me a well-known elected conservative who looks like Yaphet Kotto or even Justice Thomas I will eat my hat all the while praising the open mindedness of Republicans.
February 5th, 2007 at 1:18 pmWell, they certainly shouted a lot. It should keep the trolls happy, they get to hear their comforting messages shrieked at them. But Conservatives still don’t seem to have come to grips with this whole “sense of humor” business.
February 5th, 2007 at 1:19 pmEven their fonts are lame…
February 5th, 2007 at 1:19 pmUsually red eyes means somebody is drunk on alcohol, or a pissed off enraged redneck, or has a bacteria infection of the eyes know as “Pink Eye” > lol.
February 5th, 2007 at 1:33 pmthe repugs have replaced the old “some people say” meme with “he’s just saying what everyone is thinking” crap.
February 5th, 2007 at 1:45 pmThis development shouldn’t be surprising to anyone who has ever flipped through an issue of Maxim: Sophomoric, crude humor, and borderline misogynistic. It’s like Playboy’s younger teenager brother (minus the nudity) and makes Playboy look like highbrow literature.
Should be an indication of who exactly watches Fox News.
And if someone could please explain to me why this is funny, I’d appreciate it. On second thought, perhaps it’s a knowledge I can do without…
February 5th, 2007 at 1:49 pmThis can only mean one of two things.
A) This clown ran his “Oprah douches” comment by Fox producers and they okayed it. Meaning obviously that Fox producers and “higher-ups” endorse and encourage this kind of dialogue; or
B) This clown asked only if he could use the word “douche” during the segment and the producers thought, regardless of the fact they are talking about Obama or whomever, the term “douche” certainly is appropriate. Why would they think this at all? The only possible way to use “douche” in this context would be how they DID use it, or to call somebody a “douchebag”. Neither of which is intelligent, newsworthy or even relevant to the discussion at hand.
So why does FOX encourage this kind of dialogue and discourse on their so-called “news” channel? Is this how Fox thinks pundits and/or journalists should be acting? Is this what they think fair and balanced means?
February 5th, 2007 at 1:52 pmGregor Samsa
In other words, Maxim is Playboy for stupid wussies.
February 5th, 2007 at 2:09 pmlet’s call him what he is:
Gutfield is a professional jerkoff.
February 5th, 2007 at 2:18 pmBruce Gorton,
Yes, you could summarise it like that.
It’s not exactly a reference book -I can’t even use the “jokes” in that magazine.
It is Ironic the editor of that soft-porn rag should now work for FoxNews; that supposedly “conservative” network.
February 5th, 2007 at 2:21 pmBruce,
I just realised you posted the same thing before. He! You beat me to it.

Calling Maxim porn, is kind of being kind about it. Porn is after all, at least honest about what it is.
February 5th, 2007 at 2:38 pmFrom what I understand, the most offensive word Biden used was “articulate.” But I did notice all the panelists were white. Not all white people are bad. Everywhere I lived there were lots of them and they all treated me as if I were white (I’m part Cherokee as I quickly point out to anyone who accuses me of being white), and most of them were quite nice. Most people in general try to be nice. I’m glad I don’t live in a television set; my life would suck even worse.

One more point: Clinton (Bill) in 1999 used many of the same justifications to bomb the aspirin factory in Baghdad(1999; before Bush)
First of all, that was Libya, not Iraq. Second, it was 1998. Third, analysis of the rubble found VX gas precursors, which was just what was expected.
You may be confusing this successful and appropriate action with another of Clinton’s, Desert Shield , where - at the advice of the US weapons inspection team - he ordered the bombing of select suspect sites to which said inspectors couldn’t gain full access. Of this action, Scott Ritter said, “If Saddam Hussein had any WMDs left by 1998, that got rid of them.”

February 5th, 2007 at 3:06 pmWell, at least Coulter doesn’t have to douche–she swallows.
( I guess I can be excused for not knowing the definition of “obscene”, considering the subject here .)
February 5th, 2007 at 3:07 pmThe only possible way to use “douche†in this context would be how they DID use it, or to call somebody a “douchebagâ€. Neither of which is intelligent, newsworthy or even relevant to the discussion at hand.
Didn’t Jon Stewart refer to Bob Novak as a “douchebag of democracy”? I’m not saying that makes this okay, but I also don’t really think the Oprah comment crosses a line that hasn’t been crossed on t.v. many times before.
It’s sophomoric, even moreso because they’re proud of the fact that they’re allowed to use the word “douche” on TV, and it’s certainly not funny, but I don’t think people should be offended by this.

February 5th, 2007 at 3:28 pmExcellent. Bring them on! Jon Stewart and the Daily Show have earned their respect. The wide variety of people who come on to Stewart’s and Colbert’s shows demonstrate that. It’s gonna take a lot more than a sad atempt at pop culture humor (”i.e.: using the word douche”) to get credibility…….something both Limbaugh and Coutler lack from the get-go.
And, sorry, but Bob Novak is indeed the kind of Douchebaggery. Take a peak at the urban dictionary if you don’t understand the use of the word. Call it juvenile if you want to, but at least in that context it is funny to lots of people. In the context used by our rightwing pundit friend (like we all really want to think about Oprah douche-ing….thank god I just had lunch)it’s usage is just gross and sad.
February 5th, 2007 at 3:34 pmIts very funny seeing the republicons cheer for a corny bigoted show. No “mainstream” person is gonna think its funny that “Obama’s not the only clean black guy..Oprah douches!”. It comes off as crass, arrogant, bitter, and bigoted. Why don’t they stick a finger up their butt and make someone sniff it…I guess thats for next show though..
To “mainstream people” FoxNews is one long joke, from their made-up reporting, to their propaganda spitting reporters, nobody takes fox news serious. NOBODY. All this does is enhance their image as a facade news network. Craggly arrogant neocons will luv it. Everybody else will see it as the joke that doesn’t realize it is one. They’re not laughing with faux news..they’re laughing AT faux news.
February 5th, 2007 at 3:34 pmIncidentally, these “Red Eye” losers make fun of people, but did they get Biden on their show, like Stewart did, and get him to directly answer the question of how a Presidential Candidate other than George Bush could be so inarticulate?
February 5th, 2007 at 3:38 pmI wonder if the Chicago Tribune’s lawyers will object to “Red Eye,” as that’s the name of its mini commuter daily.
February 5th, 2007 at 3:41 pmI just got tickets to The Daily Show in April!!!!!!!!!! YEEEEEEHAAAAAAW
February 5th, 2007 at 3:54 pm#105, Mike: I wonder if the Chicago Tribune’s lawyers will object to “Red Eye,†as that’s the name of its mini commuter daily. _ - Funny, I posted virtually the same sentiment about 3 hours ago and it never showed.
February 5th, 2007 at 3:59 pmWhew! For a minute there I was concerned that Fox News might actually come up with a clever, funny, witty right-leaning comedy show. From the looks of things, all they’ve managed to dredge up is just another Glenn Beck, but just with less (cough) talent.
February 5th, 2007 at 4:12 pmI assume he will learn the hard way one of the cardinal rules of media.
Don’t f**k with the Oprah.
February 5th, 2007 at 4:24 pmWhy do conservatives continually say that liberals are racists? Just because liberals have a problem with a black conservative, it should not matter that he is black.
Are only conservatives allowed to critisize their opponents in their world? I mean, if a black conservative is not supported by liberals, why is that racism? I do not undderstand. Wouldn’t be same if a black liberal is not supported by white conservatives? Aren’t these idiots racist as hell because they are making petty and sophmoric comments about one of the most beloved women in the world. Or should I just say sexist and racist.
February 5th, 2007 at 4:27 pmTim,
Cons are expert at projecting their own sexist, racist, etc., issues onto us.
And we’re expert at letting them do it.
February 5th, 2007 at 4:35 pmOy.
Todays conservatism is organized hypocrisy just as this show will be. Hypocrisy is not or has ever been funny.
Comment by Jet Mech — February 5, 2007 @ 11:55 am
Well, I’d disagree pretty strongly with that statement. I can’t help but laugh everytime I see Ted Haggard.
February 5th, 2007 at 4:38 pmZooey
That is too true. The cons are exports at projecting. Not supporting Steele for Governor in Maryland = racist. Say Candi Rice is incompetent is racist and sexist. But saying Hillary Clinton is a bitch is just good fun to them. Saying Obama is an Uncle Tom is a big joke.
How far will this crap go? Why doesn’t someone like Bill Clinton call them on this? Or someone like Harry Reid? Why? Because the right owns big business and they can rain down on the left with the weight of Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and large factions of the Main Stream Media. IF Reid talks back, the stupid Solomon article about the free boxing tickets shows up. If Polosi comments on the state of Iraq, she’s hiring illegal immigrant at her vineyard. All Lies and BS, but printed and believed by their people.
February 5th, 2007 at 4:49 pmI remember progressives being deeply offended when Whoopi Goldberg made those vulgar “bush” jokes at the Dem fund raiser. I was so impressed that Think Progress had the good taste not to think her sophmoric quips were funny…..oh, that’s right, TP didn’t mind those jokes.
P.S. To Tim - Bill Clinton AGREES with those who call Hillary a b*^ch……poor little thing.

February 5th, 2007 at 5:34 pmYou’re an idiot.
ANyone who watches the Daily Show knows that it is not real news. It is obvious to any one with half a brain (you’re excused from this criteria, Happy Guy) that the entire basic premise of the Daily Show is of a parody of the pathetic, self important gasbags that, unfortunately, make up the American news media today.
However, people who watch the Daily show can distill the truth from the comedy because they already come into the program with a much higher knowledge and understanding of contemprary events, something you righties don’t burden yourselves with.
By the way, if most Americans as you state, don’t want to watch this “garbage”, why is it still going so strong after ten years?
Right wingers. So delusional. So funny.
My first reaction was shock, but then I considered the format–a Politically Incorrect-type show meant to be shocking. If the show offends, or surprises you with its vulgarity, then–in the eyes of its creators–it’s likely succeeding. The clip being leaked to the web is very likely just savvy viral marketing. Anyone talking about the show is giving it free advertising and creating buzz.
Also, raunchy comments about Oprah Winfrey would be right at home on such programs as Howard Stern, South Park, and the new Sarah Silverman Program. (All three, particularly the latter two, take swipes at the sacred and tell racist jokes with a heavy dose of irony, making the jokes more meta than literal. But if you’re a racist–and as Crash taught us–we’re all dirty racists, then you can just as easily choose to enjoy the humor meta-free.)
So while bashing the show for its content may be ridiculous given the current climate, it’s more than fair to be shocked by the material given its source. For Fox News, which frequently goes after entertainers and other media figures for raunch and crass talk and behavior, airing this program is hypocritical. Will Bill O’Reilly, who called for a boycott of Pepsi due to the vulgarity of spokesperson Ludacris, leave the network on principle?
In fairness, this clip has not yet aired and may be edited from the show’s final version, but if Fox News is attempting to create edgy, raunchy material for late night, isn’t it time to drop the cultural guardian schtick?
February 5th, 2007 at 5:36 pmAnother fantastic abortion of humanity! There’s a reason why this works for the Daily Show: they don’t have a slant, but rather they go after the biggest idiocy of the current time - which just so happens to be President Bush. This doesn’t work, and especially for the right wing, when they clearly have an agenda and are exuding hate from the pores of their skin.
February 5th, 2007 at 5:44 pmMy friend, why are the Rusho sickoes always addressing each other as “my friend,” my friend? They sound like so many Palestinian bluejeans merchants, my friend…. so inappropriate for their “point of view” (my friend)
February 5th, 2007 at 5:53 pmLet Fox continue to showcase the real nutjobs on the right so the “normal” Americans will begin to realize how they have been played like fiddles all these years.
February 5th, 2007 at 5:58 pmThey just don’t understand do they — the Daily Show takes on everyone - both parties - it’s just that the Repugs give them much more material with Bush&Co.
February 5th, 2007 at 6:01 pmThe rightwing humorists (I think that is an oxymoron) are one-trick ponies. They quickly become stale and not funny.
Just another example of how clueless and tonedeaf today’s conservatives are. Hard to believe they would miss something so basic, but satire works when speaking to or about power. As the great Molly Ivins pointed out often, when the powerful use satire against the less powerful, it’s like kicking a cripple.
As MSNBC does with the hapless and pathetic bowtie boy, they’ll hold on to these shows despite horrible ratings trying to make a political point. I hope Murdock loses tens of millions before he pulls the plug.
February 5th, 2007 at 6:02 pmThe camera’s movement is giving me a headache. It’s too much like watching the Blair Witch Project. Even with the volume muted it still gave me a headache.
February 5th, 2007 at 6:15 pmIs this another Republican macacca moment?
February 5th, 2007 at 6:19 pmThe most pathetic thing about this is that these people actually think they’re funny. Fine. Daily Show is Canada’s most popular cable television show. Fox, you’re up! You’ve had your circle-jerk. Let’s see how funny the general public thinks you are. I’m guessing not so funny.
February 5th, 2007 at 6:23 pmHow is this for conservative humor? Republican Girls Gone Wild:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RZUIoLfZpw
February 5th, 2007 at 6:36 pmThe only laughter this show generates is the assumption that it can viably compete with The Daily Show. That’s how Fox will get to the youngin’s to convert them to thinking “right”! Not hardly.
February 5th, 2007 at 6:46 pmSome people watch the Daily Show and think that garbage is real news. Comment by Happy Guy — February 5, 2007 @ 10:27 am
That would be morons like you.
It is nice to get the other side. Comment by Happy Guy — February 5, 2007 @ 10:27 am
The other side of what? The truth perhaps? Yes, Fox indeed does show the other side of truth; Fox shows us the lies. And it’s not nice to see.
I hope it does as well as FOX news and show the lefties what the country likes to watch. Comment by Happy Guy — February 5, 2007 @ 10:27 am
The country likes to watch Fox? Actually, what likes to watch Fox is a bunch of backwards bigoted hicks who are braindead and like their prejudice spoon-fed to them by a collection of blowhard right-wing dummies with no journalistic credentials.
February 5th, 2007 at 7:05 pmStick to what you’re good at. Like fear mongering and partisanship.
February 5th, 2007 at 7:08 pmhey let’s talk about Barack Obama and the Biden remarks
hey let’s immediately talk about Oprah - I hear she’s Black too
February 5th, 2007 at 7:43 pmMeh is really all I have to say to that.
Man those conservatives are just BURSTING full of comedy gold that is being suppressed by that main stream comedy media!!
(All I saw was the stupidity and moronic attempts at humor that are on Glen Beck’s 8 hours of show a night). I can’t even get upset about the Oprah comment because that would as a result acknowledge this show exists.
Maybe the 65+ audience of Fox News will like it-who knows
February 5th, 2007 at 10:46 pmNot like blackfacing Liebermann or Michael Steele, or heaven forbid the statement Biden made not once but twice (an Indian in every 7/11).
Hypocrites

February 6th, 2007 at 12:39 ami am sooo looking forward to the day that stewart and colbert mock this show
February 6th, 2007 at 12:56 am- its going to be a riot
What pricks.
February 6th, 2007 at 1:28 amWow this was about as funny as a trainwreck the funniest part will be the ratings
February 6th, 2007 at 2:57 amLike school in the summer time…………………………………no class
February 6th, 2007 at 3:05 amAnother spark of programming genius. With the popularity of Bill O’Reilly, and comedy shows that spoof him, it only makes sense that Fox News add that type of programming to their latenight lineup.
Fox News needs to create a Fox News West channel, so that they can repeat their east coast evening lineup on the west coast, leaving their late night open for these types of comedy shows.
February 6th, 2007 at 8:08 amDude, what are they thinking? Oprah is like a mob boss on TV. You don’t F with her. If she wanted, she could have that show off the air. Oprah can break you in the TV biz.
February 6th, 2007 at 8:48 amSteve Douchy has no comment.
February 6th, 2007 at 8:49 amOnce you put politics before comedy, the show is destined to fail. Comedy with an agenda sucks. The Daily Show and The Cobert Report want to entertain. Fox wants to preach.
February 6th, 2007 at 9:46 amThe entire Fux News channel is a parody. Why do they need to try and create a show which is suppose to be humorous. What passes for news on that channel is already a joke.
February 6th, 2007 at 12:22 pmYou commie hippies!
February 6th, 2007 at 3:16 pmThat was the funniest shizzle I have ever seen!
Well there certainly is at least one douche in this article. I can’t tell if Greg Gutner is juvenile enough to think he’s being funny or if he really is stupid enough to insult the most powerful woman in entertainment. He must not like that spiffy new show of his.
Wow, Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter as guest stars! Because nothing screams “hip and cool” like old white out-of-touch ass-hats. Is Fox even going to bother airing this on the Coasts or is this show exclusively for red states?
Also, gratz to Hal Turner (#146) for being just literate enough to find all and employ all of the text formatting tools while still sounding like a high school drop-out. Good shizzle.
February 6th, 2007 at 4:46 pmOkay, besides the rather inane chatter of these not so clever monkey, can we all agree to put to bed the MTV camera aesthetic?
Moving the camera around does not make it edgy, it does not make it ‘fresh’, and for the love of God it does not move the discussion forward.
I knew this would be crap two seconds in when the camera was making me toss me cookies, and picturing Oprah douching finished the job.
February 6th, 2007 at 8:53 pmHow in the name of Obama is the Big O gonna do anything to Gut? Does her shadow encompass the likes of Rupert? Methinks not…
February 6th, 2007 at 9:36 pmLet them air this crap and keep it on the air so their ratings can continue to fall.

February 8th, 2007 at 12:24 amYou’re kidding. That is really really SAD! The funniest thing about it is how clueless those jackasses are regarding how lame they are, and that’s my only consolation after witnessing that.
That shit makes getting teeth drilled at the dentist look like fun.
February 8th, 2007 at 12:55 amThey don’t even have an audience. That makes them even more lame.
February 8th, 2007 at 1:37 amThere is nothing sadder than right-wingers trying to be funny.
February 8th, 2007 at 2:53 amPoor little right-wingers…
/snark
wtf…is this supposed to be a conservative answer to the daily show? pathetic!
February 8th, 2007 at 3:21 amWhy is it that, without exception, whenever the right attempts political humour it’s as funny as a dead baby’s doll.
February 8th, 2007 at 5:02 amI’m sure he and fox will be very happy together.
February 8th, 2007 at 7:25 amThis would be a good time to use “parental control” on my t.v.
February 8th, 2007 at 8:32 amWhite people:
Just leave us the f#$% alone.
February 8th, 2007 at 10:43 pmI think what’s interesting and what many seemed to have missed here is that if you take biden’s words just “as is,” what he’s saying really is that obama is “clean” enough for mainstream america, i.e., the midwestern american who might watch this fox show, for example.
What biden is suggesting (again if you just take him literally) is that obama would be acceptable as a candidate because he believes america is basically a racist country and that obama is “white” enough to be acceptable to middle america (the centrist swing vote) and is “electable.” liberals wouldn’t need that yard stick to measure obama by. that’s why they’re called liberals.
these idiots on the clip don’t realize that at all.
February 8th, 2007 at 11:16 pmAs a hard right turning Republican I find this show to be irritating to say the least. 5 People barking at eachother on 5 minute issues is not what interests a Conservative.
A better format would be 5 people barking at eachother ON ONE SINGULAR ISSUE for 2 hours straight. Everyone and their dog has already heard the shallow surface of the 5 minute issues, I am sick and tired of listening to these damn cliches being repeated over and freaking over and freaking over and freaking over again.
This is what made Rush Limbaugh such a hit, he stuck with ONE ISSUE for sometimes several hours at a time. You could sink your teeth into the ONE ISSUE, and not just listen to the damn CLICHES!!!! SON OF A B!! PULL THIS DAMN AWEFUL SHOW! FOX!!! I CANT TAKE IT ANYMORE! Dont make me watch CNN!
February 12th, 2007 at 2:11 amYup…this will go over as good as Colin Quinn’s hate filled talk show that got cancelled a few years ago. Hygene jokes. Yup. Hi-larious. Not to mention Dennis Miller. Or Limbaugh’s tv show back in the 90’s. The Daily Show has attracted conservatives and liberals alike on its show. Will this one? No one with any sense will show up, thats why Rush and Anne are first in line. We need more racist jokes about hygenine! thats what being a conservative is ALL ABOUT! dont you wanna vote republican now? Minorities stink! Be white and clean! and rich (cause poor people are a lower life form)!
