After reading “Worse Than Watergate” (John Dean), the obstruction, whether systemic or not, ties right in with this administration’s attitude toward secrecy. systems are desgined by humans, individuals, and to blame a “system” for lack of cooperation is tantamount to shunning admission that those who designed and fostered such secrecy techniques are innocent of any wrong-doing.

Homeland Security has as much latitude in being informative, cooperative, and open as the Executive branch allows them, largely at its discretion. I think Iraq and the other messes, present and past, are born out efforts frequently-described in exposÃ©s like John Perkins’ “Confessions of an Economic Hitman”.

This government is precisely an example of power left unchecked and out of control. What a pitiful condemnation, but an accurate one.

Rob, the way they get away with it is through the cooperation of a supine Congress. Perhaps the subpoenas will begin to flow under the Democrats and, perhaps if they are ignored (say, under the claim of executive privilege), impeachment proceedings will begin. I’m not holding my breath.

I concur, it seems as though there’s an attempt to subvert documents.

Democrats should be able to legally get any document that The Department of Homeland Security refuses to turn over.

It’s about time that Bush, Cheney and his son-in law Phillip Perry be investigated and made to give account of what is going on to this Congress.
