I've heard the writers for the show thought the mix-up would be funny, but its more obnoxious than anything & only feeds into the misinformation about sexual health information. It would have only been funny if so many did not confuse the two- which the writers did by clearly minimalizing & incorrectly portraying the 'ease' of a medical abortion.

The administration of RU-486 (a Medical Abortion) is a lot more complex than simply 'slipping someone the pill' & it causing a miscarriage- there are a few other chemicals that must be given to cause a medical abortion- so it actually looks like the writers goofed up, were sloppy in there research & won't admit their mistake or flat out misled viewers with this issue. Note to writers- its only funny if its a clear flub that can be identified by the majority of the public.

#203 You are confusing what constitutes a pregnancy. Medically speaking, a pregnancy only occurs IF and ONLY IF implantation of an embyro occurs. The morning after pill (and birth control pills) does in some cases prevent implantation, but it does not end an established pregnancy (technically speaking). You may feel it 'ends a life' b/c it prevents the embryo (or human life as you may call it) from implanting, but to call it a pregnancy is factually wrong. The morning after pills stated use & actual purpose is to #1 prevent ovulation (which prevents the creation of an embryo (human life as you call it) & the morning after pill does this very thing in the vast majority of its uses. Indeed though, it can & does prevent an embryo (not a pregnancy) from implanting & starting a pregnancy, but to actually terminate a pregnancy(even a very early one) is incorrect. Once the embryo implants, it takes a lot more than a simple dose of progestin (morning after pill) to actually cause a miscarriage or abortion, and indeed even RU-486 (abortion pill) can not single handedly cause an abortion in most cases & other chemicals & hormones must be involved.

Your facts are wrong. The episode isn't about Plan B, it's about RU 486. They're completely different drugs.

Here's a study, with several nations participating, of mifepristone (outdated investigational name ru486) used as a morning after pill.
As an antiprogestin agent mifepristone has many different effects on the reproductive process, not just aborting an already implanted human embryo. Hope my link works, because my html is rusty, but it's an easy google anyway.
<a href="http://www.reproline.jhu.edu/english/6read/6issues/6progress/prog51_c.htm" rel="nofollow">mifepristone study</a>
Yes, Eamon is correct that the life of a human organism starts with fertilization, and this is the salient moral controversy, not the ACOG's redefinition of the term 'pregnancy'.
Some people would use accidental human deaths to justify willful killing.
For example, one might say that natural failures to implant justifies killing human embryos up to the blastocyst stage, miscarriages of embryos or fetuses justifies later surgical or chemical abortions, still births justify the infanticide occuring presently at certain hospitals.

I do not agree that natural deaths justify willful killing.

Since mifepristone, levonorgestrel, various other progestins, and estrogen progestin combinations have all been used as morning after pills, and "morning after" is not literal, since there may be a delay in the use of any of these pills, there seems to be not much, other than the personal sensitivities of the author, to inspire the protest against CW.
Killing humans is killing humans. Does it really matter when in the lifespan of the human organism that this killing occurs?

So, can't stand it, since sometimes the zygote doesn't implant for some natural reason or another, it's ok to just go ahead and prevent it from implanting? I don't follow your reasoning. And what kind education have you recieved? Conception isn't instantaneous? Yes, in fact it is. Conception and implantation are two completely different processes. Boy do I wish people would either take a human development class or pick up a book at least once before arguing this issue.

203. Did they not have sex education at your school? Or wait... did your school buy into that Newt Gingrich Gives the Facts of Life program? Conception isn't instantaneous. The morning after pill prevents implantation which can also happen without the morning after pill. Lots and lots of fertilized eggs never implant and are carried out of the woman during menses.

Seriously? You should pull this article because it really skews the truth. My pet cause is the misconceptions about the morning after pill, but as a regular VMars viewer, someone who actually watched this episode, they made it clear that the drug slipped to the character was RU-487, and never referred to it as the morning after pill. Although I see you added a statement to the bottom of your original post, doesn't seem like anyone is seeing it, and this is a defamation of a great little show.

It's not about politics - it's not about what networks trying to spew out messages. It's not even about religion. It's all about quality control. The writers didn't take time with their research. The writers just met their deadlines as fast as they could. The network didn't do their part with quality control - they just say air it, we got the advertising funds. In this world it's all about quality control - in this case lack of it. They get the job done as fast as they can. The network also has to take the writers word for it...they are the so called content experts.

Gregor and Zooey,

I think you two need to take a human anatomy class or at least pick up a book. There is not a single science book, biology book, human emryology book, ect. in existance that states that life begins anywhere but at conception. This is scientific fact and Wikipedia hardly counts as a scholarly source; anyone can write or edit an article on there. Find me an actual science text book that states life begins elsewhere but at conception. If you are arguing against scientific fact, which you are, then you are arguing from a completely arbitrary definition of life that you have made up yourself to defend taking that life.

And Zooey, don't give me that b.s. about not caring about women. To qoute flyers and a sweatshirt a friend of mine made, "Call me an extremist, but I think dismembering babies is wrong". I DO care about women, which is why I think they deserve better than a dismembered baby and the emotional and physical damage abortion does to the woman's own body. I happen to believe that ALL human life is equal and valuable. Pretty horrible person, aren't I?

Abortion does not make you un-pregnant; it makes you the mother of a dead child.

Gee, could ThinkProgress's own correction about the misinformation your site posted about the content of last night's episode of Veronica Mars be any more discreet?

What's good for the goose is good for the gander - if organizations like ThinkProgress want others to correct misinformation, maybe you should try getting your own facts straight first, eh?

Brain dead, indeed.

It's easy to mislead, made more likely when matters are complained of based on expectation rather than fact.

Any young woman who watched the show would have been informed throughout that the pill that caused the termination of the pregnancy was RU-486. The error you report is in an episode description. Pre-air episode descriptions are misleading by their nature, particularly in a mystery show - else what is the point of watching the episodes. It seems extremely unlikely that any young woman is going to take medical advice from an episode description of an episode they don't even watch.

<em>You might want to update that update, Amanda: although the Bonnie character does state that she was given RU486, Veronica tells Keith mid-episode that Bonnie’s miscarrage was caused by “the morning-after pill”–so there’s a serious inconistency in the script that suggests that the writers don’t know the difference between the two. So it’s not just the CW promo materials that are to blame here; the writers messed up as well.</em>

This is also incorrect. The dialogue is as follows:
<strong>VERONICA:</strong> No. No! Dad, no. I am not now, nor have I ever been, pregnant. I visited the clinic for a case. Someone slipped this girl RU-486, and it caused a miscarriage.

The "morning after pill" referred to in the title was not what was given, or said to be given, to a girl to cause the end of her pregnancy. It was the metaphorical pill Veronica needed to wipe out the image of her boyfriend together with a girl she hated. The fact that there was not such a pill ended her relationship with him.

I have never been to this site before, and after this post I doubt I ever will again. I understand your concern about the "misinformation." But ultimately, it was you who propagated misinformation. <strong>The show made it very clear that the drug used was RU486. In fact, the term "morning after pill" was never used in the episode at all.</strong> It was used in the title, which I think was intended to be a shout out to the Maureen McGovern song than a direct reference to content. The average viewer does not know the titles of individual episodes, anyway. So this is clearly a case of you making a mountain out of a mole hill. As for the episode description on the website, that was written by the "promo monkeys" (as VM fans call them) at CW, not the producers of the show. Don't blame the show for that. It is a great show that does not shy away from addressing controversial topics. It's by far one of the most well written and performed shows on tv today. (To the person who posted about Kristen Bell's expression always being the same clearly has never seen the show.) I encourage you all to watch the show yourself instead of letting bloggers misinform you. Think progress=thinking for yourself.

This is disappointing. I really like this show and I'm definitely NOT a teen girl, unless you subtract several decades and switch a chromosome here or there. I'm going to give them the benefit of a doubt - they are being stupidly ignorant, and are streamlining concepts to fit the TV screen (like web pages that open instantly, bugs that work perfectly and so on). They probably asked some teen focus group what they thought, and it flew, because it wouldn't be so creepy if it just "prevented" pregnancy. I doubt CW will wake up to the error until much too late.

Regarding my taste for dippy crime dramas, all I can say is that there's a lot there that's NOT dumb. Some of the dialog is VERY funny, and there are some great complexities in the plot - usually two or three issues to solve, typically a small one per show and one or two that span weeks or the whole season. The relationships aren't totally idiotic and the characters are only slightly one-dimensional.

Me @ #51:

<blockquote>1. I’m going to laugh if the episode synopsis was simply written wrong (Amanda, next time make sure the episode actually airs before you do a post like this).</blockquote>

And then:

<blockquote>UPDATE: In tonight’s episode, Bonnie makes clear that a friend slipped her RU-486, the abortion pill. But as of the show’s airing, CW’s website still lists the morning after pill as the cause of the character’s miscarriage.</blockquote>

Ahahahahahaha!

Have you learned your lesson now, Amanda? Looks like who ever is manning the CW website is just about as incompetent as Amanda.

Rachel, why don’t you move to Thailand, or some other child sex vacation destination? You could indulge your sick fantasies, and help the local economy at the same time. And if they happened to lock you up, we’d all benefit. You could act out to your heart’s content, and gain valuable cultural information about other countries’ treatment of their criminally-deviant inmates. You could even write a book about your “exploits,” and possibly gain a much wider audience than you’ll ever get here. And our benefit is quite obvious; we wouln’t have to slog through all the cut-and-paste tripe.

Whattaya say? We’ll even pass the hat, and buy your ticket.

<strong>The pill in question was NOT the morning after pill. The character on Veronica Mars was slipped RU486, which causes a miscarriage.

If you're going to write an article about it, at least get your facts straight.</strong>
