Right Wing Uses Erroneous CNN Report To Smear Gore

Last week, The Guardian reported that the Exxon-funded American Enterprise Institute was offering to pay global warming deniers to push back on the new IPCC climate change study.

This morning, CNN incorrectly reported that during an appearance in Spain, Al Gore had blamed the White House — not AEI — for offering to pay the scientists. The headline read: “Gore says Bush administration paying scientists to dispute global warming.” But hours later, the site issued a retraction saying Gore had “responded to a question” from a reporter “that incorrectly implied the Bush administration was making payments to scientists.” Gore was referring to AEI when he said, “They’re offering cash for so-called skeptics who will try to confuse people about what the science really says.”

CNN’s correction hasn’t stopped the right wing from recycling the false headline in order to smear Gore. A headline from today’s Drudge Report:

gore_warming.JPG

Following Drudge’s lead, Fox News’ John Gibson regurgitated the incorrect story. Gore “just won’t shut up about his climate change crusade,” Gibson said. “He’s now charging that scientists who doubt the global warming argument are being bribed by our government and others to betray science.”

Watch it:

Transcript:

Now, big weather. He just won’t shut up about his climate change crusade. Former Vice President and alpha-male environmentalist Al Gore spoke out at a global warming conference in Madrid. He’s now charging that scientists who doubt the global warming argument are being bribed by our government and others to betray science.

You mean the “Liberal Media” has mis-quoted Gore and the “Conservative Media” perpetuated the error, thereby turning it into a myth and a falsehood??? That never happens…

You would think people would wise up to the fact that there is no serious distinction between media outlets… They’re all opportunistic cheerleading hoo-ers.

  9. Liberal in New Mexico says:

Gore was most likely right. Regardless, he was misquoted. That’s why God invented courts, lawyers and judges. Sue thier FOXy asses for liebel and slander. At the very least, it’s PR for his film and keeps the issue in the spotlight.

  10. Willy says:

Funny thing, but the erroneous story is almost believable.

  11. VerbalKint says:

What do you think of the prolific lying by Republicans, Vince? Are you down with that, dude? Is is okay for them to lie about everything all the time, just so long as they’re greasing towelheads, buddy?

  12. VerbalKint says:

Oh, and by the way, it just shows that they see Gore as a threat to their little criminal party in 2008.

  13. Willy says:

Now that I think about it, the erroneous story is completely believable. (Not that I’m saying it happened, not yet anyway)

  14. Liberal in New Mexico says:

It’s ironic that in thier selfish, clumsy way of attempting to lie, they are actually telling the truth. The funny thing is that it can’t come back to haunt Gore, because he never said it… THEY did.

  16. Seixon says:

Nice try, Gore and Clinton Apologist Central, but as CNN notes in its correction:

Gore did answer the question as posed by the Cuatro interviewer.

In other words, Gore answered a question relating to the Bush administration, not AEI. The Spanish interviewer asked him about the Bush administration paying scientists, and Gore answered it, “Yes, yes…”

I challenge Think Progress to post the entire transcript. Here’s the video, but the interviewer’s question gets drowned out by the translator.

and, do gore or clinton need apologists? (answer:not really) Dubbie is the one who needs lots and lots of apologists, and he’s SO fortunate to have Fox and Seixon bravely eating shit for him.

Gore and Clinton = ok guys, needing no apologies

Bush and Cheney = criminal c*cksuckers, needing to hijack the entire US government to try to bury their crimes.

So you don’t see the difference between alleging that the US government is paying off scientists instead of noting a confirmed fact that AEI was looking to do that? It would be like claiming that Al Gore did something that Think Progress did.

  27. KRank says:

The way I see it, this story could be a good thing. It won’t be terribly difficult to refute and the more the Right Wing Media squawks about it, the more attention it gets. Then anyone who is interested in the facts will investigate and discover that AEI actually IS offering cash for scientists whose opinions will support their preferred view.

Okay, so that may be a total of ten, fifteen people in America, tops, who will investigate, but still, it’s something…

  30. Bluedog49 says:

Yeah, Valiant Venus, it would have been soooooo horrible for Gore to have assumed the office as he deserved in 2001. Hundreds of thousands would still be alive. The Twin Towers would probably still be standing. Our economy would be sound and healthy. The value of the dollar would not be tanking. And, our standing in the world would be strong. Something tells me that the majority of Americans would still vote for Gore, just like they did in 2000, and that since Florida is going to paper ballots and Ohio is now blue, you couldn’t steal it from Gore this time.

  33. Tracy says:

Sexion you just killed this thread by posting the interview video.

  34. Bluedog49 says:

And yes, if Gore were president, the Twin Towers WOULD still be standing. I assume that a President Gore would have pushed through the suggestions of his own Gore Commission. Those suggestions included armed air marshals, reinforced cockpit doors and more strict check in standards at airports. Any one of those things could have easily stopped the entire attack.

  35. Faiz says:

Seixon, thanks for the link and the comments. I hadn’t seen the video online.

As for our post, it seems that you agree the Drudge headline was misleading (comment 20), and therefore Gibson was also misleading.

    Comment by Seixon

What an absolutely horrible analogy that is… Do you have any idea how many members of AEI have had an active role in our government? Do you have any idea how many Think Progress members have an active role with anything Gore is doing? (hint: relatively NONE if ANY)

Seriously, try to keep things in scale.

  37. Lee says:

National strike is the only answer. Congress is not standing up for the people – because Cheney has the goods on them from all that illegal spying? We must show corporate America who is the boss before it is too late.

  38. Jet Mech says:

but the interviewer’s question gets drowned out by the translator.
    -Seixon

So then you don’t know what the question was?

    Was it translated correctly?

  39. Lee says:

Bluedog49 what still haunts me about 9/11 is the fact Bush came out and said it was another Pearl Harbor the words used in PNAC, page 51 where the authors stated America would need anouther Pearl Harbor.

  40. Bluedog49 says:

Lee, that’s one of the many things which bother me about it as well. I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but unless they can explain what should be easiest to explain – the lack of NORAD response and the strange pattern of option calls — they shouldn’t expect people to take anything at face value.

  41. Earthling says:

The smear campaign won’t work. I don’t care what agency’s name is attached to global warming deniers. I still blame Bush.

  42. Seixon says:

    Faiz,

Yes, FOX News’ angle on it is misleading, just as the Drudge headline is. However, your post is also misleading in claiming:

Gore was referring to AEI when he said, “They’re offering cash for so-called skeptics who will try to confuse people about what the science really says.”

This is false, Gore was referring to the Bush administration in answering this because that’s what the interviewer asked.

    Example:

Q: Did the CIA knock down the Twin Towers?

A: Yes, yes, they knocked down the Twin Towers.

You can’t seriously suggest that the person answering this question was referring to someone other than the CIA, and similarly, Gore was not referring to AEI.

Although as I pointed out, it would be misleading to say that Gore made the claim, as he was answering to the claim made by the reporter.

Drudge and FOX should have said: “Gore agrees that Bush administration is paying scientists to speak out against global warming”

    That would have been accurate.

  43. veritas says:

CNN = Bush’s New Propaganda Tool

  44. veritas says:

The erroneous story may have been intentionally created because it’s certainly “plausible” these days. Just like typical propaganda which sometimes blows up in the face of the propagandist, however, it’s that first snippet which the public forever remembers – and the ones who don’t watch on subsequent programs for a correction, will be believe it.

So this may be one thing which the administration did not do and are being blamed for doing, eh? One thing in a mountain of lies and bull—- – perhaps if they take umbrage with this one factual misstep, then the people need to begin amassing the almost incomprehensible number of criminal activities which they HAVE engaged in and then lied about??

  46. veritas says:

Bluedog: You bet your life they’d still be standing. I’d love to see Al Gore return and wipe this GOP off the map but I think he’s evolved much too far spiritually to reimmerse himself in the black, toxic evil gunk of this administration – even if only to attempt to clean it up following the worst president ever in the history of this country.

Al Gore has international credibility – something which this Prez will NEVER attain. He doesn’t even have national credibilty, for pity sakes!

In any case, hindsight is always 20/20 and if Al Gore hadn’t had the presidency outright “stolen from him by a band of criminals and thugs” who will still be prosecuted someday for their actions, one can only imagine how much better off this country and our democracy would be right now.

  58. ItsJustKarma says:

As a matter of fact I saw ‘An inconvenient truth’. Now for me that was some sort of ‘deja vu all over again’. As early as in 1983 there was a study by a group of European scientists that had started sediment core drills in the North Atlantic ocean floor. The first results showed some interesting pattern. There were tiny snails to be found in the sediment layers. The amazing thing was a thermal dependence of the growth direction of the snail house. With lower water temperatures the majority of snails houses would grow clockwise. Higher water temperatures would cause the snails to grow houses that spiral counter clockwise.
To make a million year long story short, the amount of snails with counter clockwise houses led to the realization that there was a large amount of warmer fresh water into the Atlantic ocean just before the last ice age, around 10,000 years ago. The result of the fresh water infusion into the Atlantic Ocean was a complete halt of the Thermohaline current, or Great Ocean Conveyor. Al Gore’s film focused partially on the fact that the meltdown of the arctic, antarctic and Greenland ice masses would cause the same halt of the important deep ocean current.
How stupid does somebody have to be, to deny the factual relationship between a ‘coincidental’ and a ‘man made’ interruption of the for mentioned deep sea current with known consequences?
Those right wing people are so dumb that there is no hope or cure. It will be insufficient to tell them in a few years “I told You so”.
To smear Al Gore is the dumbest thing a human can come up with and fortunately the rest of the world has already acknowledged the ‘Inconvenient Truth’ of global warming.
It is only some dumb Americans who keep bad mouthing the only great guy this country has seen in decades. Al Gore is a hero and he deserves the Nobel price. The opinion of some idiotic right wing morons doesn’t change that. And finally let me make one more statement.
I realized that the fact that Al Gore did not become the ‘next president of the U.S.’ is rather a blessing. Every country has the government it deserves. Al Gore is more important in his role as a spokes person about the dire consequences of untreated global warming.

“Our economy would be sound and healthy.”

The government doesn’t run the economy.

“The value of the dollar would not be tanking.”

I’m new to blogging and I am not sure how to comment. I have a lot to say as a liberal democrat with a republican husband. My husband and I are in agreement politically for the 1st time in our 26 year marraige. The Democrats are going to loose the presidancy again in 08. If tha dem. party nominates Hillary (too many enimies), Obama (lack of experience…and his name), and Edwards (one of the back stabbing dems. involved with getting Dean out of the picture in 04). My republican friends and husband were ready to vote for Dean, but when Kerry got the nomination they voted for BUsh. I do believe that there are better candidates out there like Richardson (would get crossover votes), but my heart will always be with Al Gore or Howard Dean. The American people say they want honesty, but when they get it they turn it down. They allow the media to convince them that a person is not qualified to be President (Dean) and convince us some idiot is (ie. Bush and Kerry). And when it comes to the war in Iraq, the media convinced the public that if you were against invading Iraq, you were unpatriotic. The American people and stupid senate and congress went right along with Fox and the Bush administration’s propaganda. I’m not a really smart person, but I Knew it was wrong and would turn into another Vietnam. Why didn’t more of our leaders take a stand against this war before it was too late? I will never vote for anyone who gave BUsh the OK to invade Iraq and I don’t care if they are good democrats. I and my husband are looking for a 3rd party candidate if the dems don’t give us a worthwhile candidate. We both like Gov. Richardson, but no one talks about his run for the White HOuse. COME ON AL, OR HOWARD WE NEED YOU!

All I can say is WOW! Extremely nice layouts, awesome graphics and great articles. No matter how many times I come here, I am still impressed by the very professional appearance. Congratulations on a job well done.
