Last month, when a right-wing publication smeared Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL), CNN helped debunk the report and called out media outlets that ran with the false story. Anderson Cooper told viewers: “That’s the difference between talking about news and reporting it. You send a reporter, check the facts, and you decide at home.”
Now, the Washington Times (owned by the same entity that published the Obama smear) has launched a series of attacks on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), claiming that Pelosi is “demanding permanent access to a large military jet for herself, her staff, other Members and supporters.”
As with the Obama smear, the Times story is based entirely on quotes from unnamed sources. Yet, instead of investigating the report, CNN’s Lou Dobbs has covered the story every day for six straight days — Feb 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 — amplifying the attacks and repeating the inaccuracies.
Here are Dobbs’ claims along with the facts:
1) Dobbs: Pelosi “wants the U.S. Air Force for personal accommodation.”
FACT: Pelosi’s use of a military aircraft is about security, not “personal accomodation.” It was House Sergeant at Arms Wilson Livingood who initiated inquiries into the aircraft. “I advised Speaker Pelosi that the US Air Force had made an airplane available to Speaker Hastert” following 9/11, Livingood wrote, and “I offered to call the U.S. Air Force and Department of Defense to seek clarification of the guidelines [which governed Speaker Hastert’s use of a plane].”
2) Dobbs: Pelosi will use the plane “whenever she sees fit.”
FACT: Pelosi’s office has already said she “will not use the plane for political travel.”
3) Dobbs: Pelosi could fly to her district non-stop “in the plane that Hastert was using.”
FACT: Both the Washington Post and Roll Call have reported that the plane used by Speaker Hastert was too small for Pelosi since it “needs to refuel every 2,000 miles and could not make the nonstop haul to California. ‘The Air Force determined that [Pelosi’s] safety would be best ensured by using a plane that has the fuel capacity to go coast-to-coast,’” a Pelosi spokesperson said.
4) Dobbs: Pelosi “wants a plane that accommodates 42 people, private stateroom. … She could take a circus with her.”
FACT: Pelosi’s office says “it is up to the Air Force to decide what type and size of plane will be required,” and that “she has never asked for a plane or space on a plane to accommodate ’supporters.’”
Email Lou Dobbs and tell him to correct the record.

lou has become the KKK. he is a radical conservative in most aspects, and he has always had it out for pelosi, look at his other statements.
he is a putz, and he needs to be asked if he is a grand wizard, just to get it on record
February 7th, 2007 at 2:50 pmBut the rhetoric is so much more fun to talk about than the truth.
February 7th, 2007 at 2:51 pmGuess Lou Dobbs is getting “the squeeze” put on him by the Bush Administration for his honesty & candor. If he intends to retain what credibility he may still have with the people, he’d better begin retracting the falsehoods and apologize to the american public for propagating lies and helping to spin the GOP propaganda machine.
February 7th, 2007 at 2:51 pmI sent a Valentine to Lou telling him to look for another job… and some other heated words… not that he cares what we think, but maybe someone in CNN will get to read our outraged emails. Or at least count how many negatives!
February 7th, 2007 at 3:02 pmLeave a comment for him, folks…
Yea, there you go. The truth comes out so long as Dobbs was slapping down leading Hispanic American leaders cutting them off and lumping all Hispanic Americans as illegal aliens and making proclamations “in point of fact” in a fake defense of the “middle class”/”workiing class” people.
February 7th, 2007 at 3:06 pmWooo, Lou is ok. Now the truth comes out of Lou being just another Republican in “populist” clothing.
CNN Champions Pelosi Smear, Covers False Washington Times Story Six Days Straight
………maybe it`s true.
February 7th, 2007 at 3:10 pmDo all Speakers use Air Force planes? Or, was Hastert the first?
Pelosi could stop all these claims and clearly demonstrate that she differs from her predecessor by telling the Air Force to keep the plane.
February 7th, 2007 at 3:14 pmThis laughable really to see Lou doubs discussing the Speaker of the House use of aircraft to sell himself to viewers as the guy who cares about government spent money.
We spend around 10 to 12 billion dollars a month in Iraq war, which can buy an aircraft for every congressman and senator, but Lou trying to make an issue of nothing to make a story out it …Lou should be talking about the trillion dollars missing from Defense Dept. and the tons of dollar bills missing in Iraq that Bremer don’t know where it went, and the billions of dollars that are spent on contractors like Halliburton and others, isntead of Lou and CNN wasting their time on this ‘no story’
Give me a break Lou…!!
February 7th, 2007 at 3:22 pmWhere can I send a check to help buy Jet -A fuel for her plane?
February 7th, 2007 at 3:23 pmTraitor.

You need to stop listening to the version that Dobbs is giving you. Pay close attention here: Pelosi is next after Cheney in the order of succession. So was Hastert. That’s why they have the special plane. This isn’t a luxury or privilege thing, and Dobbs is lying to everyone when he keeps trying to say it is. Pelosi didn’t ask for the plane in the first place. It’s something that is provided to the Speaker of the House for the reason I just gave.
Pelosi could stop all these claims and clearly demonstrate that she differs from her predecessor by telling the Air Force to keep the plane.
Dobbs could stop all these claims if he could just stop himself and his guests from lying.

February 7th, 2007 at 3:27 pmI support providing an essential, and an honorable, Legislator with the tools she needs to help drag the United States of America away from the edge of disaster.
I like that Lou is fighting for the middle class and pointing out corporate greed. But he’s a Republican, and its hard for him to not take a shot at a Democrat.
I’ll let him slide on this one, because he the loudest voice on the air fighting for the struggling middle class of America.
February 7th, 2007 at 3:27 pmI e-mailed Dobbs yesterday morning, asking him if he was going to retract and apologize or just keep on lying about it. I guess I got my answer.
Lying sack o’ shit.

I don’t watch Dobbs. Liar or not, his show is over by the time I get home.
I don’t see how having a plane and being 3rd-in-line go together.
February 7th, 2007 at 3:59 pmSometimes I love Dobbs and sometimes I can’t stand him for his extreme positions.
However, I don’t think Dobbs has ever referred to himself, or made implications, that he is a journalist. He doesn’t do any investigative journalism on his show. It’s all just his opinions on the same issues over and over…which also explains why he runs this particular story every day.
Maybe if the rest of the media (or any of them) would report the facts, then Dobbs could take that into account.
February 7th, 2007 at 3:59 pmI bet somewhere in the Executive Wash Room of CNN - they are asking themselves why on earth haven’t they fired Lou Dobbs. Not to defend CNN, but Lou Dobbs belongs on Faux News.
February 7th, 2007 at 4:00 pm#7, funny, the president of the US gets a plane. Nancy will become president quite soon with the impeachment and criminal trials for the executive branch. you don’t think she deserves the same as the idiot in chief? You aren’t okay with the person 3rd in line for the presidency having the protection they give a criminal?
February 7th, 2007 at 4:05 pmDobbs should check his stories for accuracy, before airing. He only ends up failing to appear professional and precise, otherwise. Doing it once is a mistake. Doing it five, six times is just… stupid.

I don’t see how having a plane and being 3rd-in-line go together.
Well, ed, what happens if Bush gets killed? That would mean Cheney is president. If Bush and Cheney get killed? President Pelosi.
Now, why does the president have a special plane and why does the vice president have a special plane? Now think hard about this one. Imagine that the nation is under attack and someone has to be in charge. That someone has to be able to get to a safe place in a hurry in order to continue being in charge. I know this is complicated stuff. Just take your time with it.
February 7th, 2007 at 4:25 pmFunny how lies about a democrat are OK with the republican’s and they keep spewing them over and over but when a truth about Bush is told only once, they make the reporter look the idiot that the republican’s are. Don’t they thing the real thinking person can see through them?
February 7th, 2007 at 4:32 pmThe reich-wingers could not get their charges on Obama to stick, so they went after one of DC’s most powerful women. Shameless.

Actually she is 2nd in line, and Cheney is first in line.
February 7th, 2007 at 4:40 pmFolks Dobbs has been a Repuke hitman for a long time.Remember he is one who openly championed the Iraq war and suggested in an article that the war with Iraq would be good for our (US) economy?
February 7th, 2007 at 4:42 pmAnd please understand Dobbs really don’t care for the middle class,Dobbs is one rich son of a bitch who lives on a huge farm.Think he(Dobbs) has not used illegal immigrants a time or two ?Well think again.
If you ever noticed the commercials that play during Lou’s show, you’d realize which team he is on. He pretends to be Indepedent to fool the sheep…
February 7th, 2007 at 4:46 pmLou Dobbs only tells the truth when he has either written a book he intends to sell or one is in the works! He’s a master politician himself and, obviously, a reichwingnut. Lou’s health is waning and his time is quickly running out. Imagine having to spin such lies & deceit day after day and face your own “dark night of the soul”. It’s beginning to turn Old Louie Babe both gray (his Clairol Gold Red #243 is showing miserably) and black on the inside. I imagine that he’ll be retiring soon for health issues.

February 7th, 2007 at 5:08 pmI wish that were true, but I think that any news network that ’s OK with the likes of Glenn Beck and Nancy Grace spewing some of the most god awful, faux news stuff, out there, isn’t too worried about any outright falsehoods from the lips of Lou Dobbs concerning a Democratic politican. As long as Dobbs’ ratings stay high, unfortunately they’re probably all for it.

Queen Nancy needs time to exploit her workers in San Fran and then lie to the American people and pretend she’s a populist. She is an elitist - like the rest of them.
She will be destroyed by 2008. She is an ultra-liberal hypocrite.
February 7th, 2007 at 5:09 pmAre we to believe that Lou Dobbs has not heard that this plane story is a falsehood…that he does not know it is a smear against Pelosi…after repeating it for a week? Once again assuming his audience is stupid will in the in the long run only demonstrate that Dobbs is a liar or incompetent or a pawn for republicans to be used at their whim. Either way, this report he laments degrades him. His only way to regain any respect is to investigate the story himself and debunk it publicly. Otherwise, his fate is sealed.

Chimp, cut the patronizing crap.
What you’re worried about must’ve been worked out decades ago when the USSR had 10,000 nukes aimed at us - no Speaker needed a plane then, and it was much more likely that POTUS and VP could be whacked without warning than now. If the unlikely event she needs a plane, they’ll bring it to her, or bring her to the plane.
In the interim, she can score more points with the public and the world by not behaving like a Republican.
February 7th, 2007 at 5:32 pmI wrote to Dobbs on this Monday night. He continues to rant against Democrats — the man may fool some into thinking he is a populist, but he is a conservative Republican — he may sound good to you on one issue, (like port security for one) but when it comes down to the end, he favors Republicans, supports and advocates them.
February 7th, 2007 at 5:33 pmHe mocked the House Dems for not accomplishing their hundred hours, after they had been in office one day. Having completed their 100 hour agenda, he gave them little credit.
Write to him - yes, please do - but don’t expect him to change his tune. He’s Johnny one-note.

Must’ve? There are a lot of contingency plans and remote sites that have been set up, not just for numbers 1, 2, and 3, but for all of Congress and other offices, too. Much of that has taken place since Bush came into office. Are you saying we don’t need any of that, because we don’t have nukes aimed at us from the USSR anymore?
I would love to take the time to explain how short-sighted and over-simplified your view is, but I don’t think it would make a difference. You don’t know what you’re talking about and what you think “must’ve” happened doesn’t make for a very convincing argument.
Bottom line: if you think the second in line of succession doesn’t need protection, because the USSR has been disbanded, you should go advise the Air Force of that. Nobody’s bothered to tell them, yet.
February 7th, 2007 at 5:56 pmWhat do you expect from the Glenn Beck Network?
Please someone call George Soros and tell him WGN TV is for sale. WGN is a superstation on every basic cable package in the country. WGN midday and evening news is watched by millions.
The Carlyle Group is bidding to purchase WGN TV. Friends, if this happens it’ll make FOX News look minor. Imagine the Neo-Cons getting to blast their propaganda on this powerhouse station.
It’s CRUCIAL that liberals and independents get a news outlet of their own. Imagine a Keith Olberman broadcasting nightly on a REAL station with a built in loyal audience. Instantly progressives and independents would be able to counter the massive neo-con propaganda machine. Either the cons get WGN or we do. If anyone knows how to contact George Soros please do ASAP!
February 7th, 2007 at 5:58 pmHow much fuel does a plan like that use to go from DC to SF? It’s nice to be the speaker.
February 7th, 2007 at 6:03 pm44 - In case ed doesn’t answer… Ed is asking why do Speakers get planes from the AF now when they didn’t back when it was realistically more dangerous for them?
February 7th, 2007 at 6:05 pmWhy don’t you people just rename this site Think Democrat. That’s all this site is about in the first place. D vs. R. Why don’t you concentrate strictly with progressive issues and not try to play the D vs. R game? There are too many other blogs that do that. Be different, huh?
February 7th, 2007 at 6:07 pmFor those who are having difficulty recalling the pertinent facts in the article above and can’t be bothered with going back to read it:
It was House Sergeant at Arms Wilson Livingood who initiated inquiries into the aircraft. “I advised Speaker Pelosi that the US Air Force had made an airplane available to Speaker Hastert†following 9/11, Livingood wrote, and “I offered to call the U.S. Air Force and Department of Defense to seek clarification of the guidelines [which governed Speaker Hastert’s use of a plane].â€
and
Pelosi’s office has already said she “will not use the plane for political travel.â€
and
Pelosi’s office says “it is up to the Air Force to decide what type and size of plane will be required,†and that “she has never asked for a plane or space on a plane to accommodate ’supporters.’â€
I can attempt to translate, if necessary.

In case ed doesn’t answer… Ed is asking why do Speakers get planes from the AF now when they didn’t back when it was realistically more dangerous for them?
Was it “realistically more dangerous for them” back then? If so, when did it stop being dangerous and why?
Try this one. I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch: Bush gets bumped off or dies in a biking accident. Cheney’s ticker gives out before there’s a new VP in place. Pelosi’s number one. Are you saying there’s no need to have a secure means of transportation for the new Prez to get her back to Washington right away? If that’s the case, why do we need Air Force 2? Cheney’s not the president.
And, again, Pelosi isn’t the one who asked for the plane. If you want to bitch at someone for providing it, bitch at Hastert, bitch at Livingood, bitch at the Air Force. But, you have to jump way past a number of people who are really responsible for it in the first place in order to assign blame to Pelosi for this.
Oh, I’m sorry. I’m being partisan but not agreeing that it’s all her fault. Facts be damned.
February 7th, 2007 at 6:26 pmRe: #45. Please someone call George Soros and tell him WGN TV is for sale.
Great idea. Here’s a link to his Open Society Foundation contact page. It’s the best I’ve been able to come up with so far.
While it may sound far fetched, another possibility might be Google. While they wouldn’t be obviously left of center, it seems fairly obvious that they lean that way.
Even a simple format that does the news straight and shows no fear or favor, would be a big improvement over CNN, et al. The most important thing is to keep it out of Carlyle’s hands.

February 8th, 2007 at 6:34 amScrew it. Dobbs/CNN aren’t worth the time or the bandwidth. The MSM is rapidly falling by the wayside as a journalistic conduit. Most liberals/progressives get their political info through the web anyway. In my own simple-minded and short-sighted way, I see this:
Dobbs is wrong.
Some day, a very unlikley series of events might occur, Bush and Cheney will be out and Pelosi will become President. If that happens, I will rejoice.
Until then: Every day, the debate is about the plane. Every day, Pelosi is smeared. Every day, the debate is not about Pelosi’s agenda. Every day, the American public hears that Pelosi is worse than a Republican. Every day, the American public hears that Pelosi is not helping them.
Pelosi must change the debate. She must walk away from the plane.
February 8th, 2007 at 10:05 amKarl Rove knows that politics is often, or maybe mostly played in the realm of the symbolic. Thats why the Pelosi story, fed by same kind of White House disinfo messages that went out regarding the Wilson/Plame smear is in action again.
But it doesn’t seem that the Democrats, or even bloggers have the stomach for initiating this kind of action against the Republicans. Thats why the Democratic Veterans group discussed in the Wash. Post today is so effective. They call a coward a coward in front of the cameras, with no apologies. But they don’t have the continuous visibility of the MSM or even top line bloggers such as Atrios, Dkos, and TPM.
Full-contact politics can’t be relegated to high-profile, media saturated issues that already comprise our political discourse. Novelty sells. Thats why a feature story about “Pelosi Air” is so fascinating to Fox, not to mention Dobbs and ABC. Its not the stuff of everyday conversation, or at least it wasn’t. Now it is. The private life of the most glamorous/powerful Democrat exposed, the story already written by Karl Rove and his minions. What can she say? It ain’t true? What are bloggers going to say? It ain’t true? Like the LBJ said about the rival candidate he smeared with an highly illicit sexual innuendo…..of course its not true, but let the SOB deny it.
There are plenty symbolic strings in the Republican ranks to pull at, but the old corruption, bribes, etc. is old hat. The newspapers, and Democrats in Congress are already talking about it and there will be an ever-increasing tide of hearings. Lets look at the known personal vulnerabilities of the top rank Repbulicans–Dick and George. The VP’s staffing secrecy and lack of accountibility has been addressed by TPM but hardly picked up by the MSM. They say, so what? Where’s the fire, where’s the smoke? Well then, lets focus on the VP’s luxurious, hunting-lodge dwelling lifestyle.
Dick Cheney has an upcoming all-expenses-paid-trip to Japan and Australia, courtesy of Mr. and Mrs.American Taxpayer. For starters, why is Mr. Cheney spending Feb. 22-27 in Australia? What exactly does a sitting Vice President do in Australia for a whole week? Why not go someplace more appropriate, and in need of Vice Presidential inspection/evaluation, like Iraq or Afghanistan? I think there should be a concerted effort to get him to answer why its necessary to spend a full week of winter time in North America in sunny, summertime Australia (doing what? golf? hunting ‘roos? luxurious villa stays?) when events in Iraq are so dire. What kind of staff is he taking along, what kind of plane, and how much money is it costing? Let him go in the front of the cameras and rumble a justification for his “diplomacy” with our allies, the Australians. How many 10 day trips did Al Gore take to sunny destinations in winter time when he was Veep?

Politics 101 — All politicians are complete hypocrites and liars, especially all those pointing fingers at other politicians. A wise person once said you should take the log out of your own eye, before trying to take the spec out of someone else’s eye.
The bottom line is – what all the Dems\Leftist are really about, just like their twin brothers the Repubs, or what any politician is all about, is getting and controlling power…so then they can control all the rest of us. When we will stop being Repubs, or Dems, and begin to act like Americans first?
Pelosi and the Dems are just as big a hypocrite as any Fat cat Republican they love to hate…period…no matter what the spin is on the Left or Right. The problem is rooted in career politicians and the power they so desperately seek. The Dems silence any dissent, political debate that does not agree with their agenda…just as much as the person they are forever accusing the same of - their hated foe Bush.
The political scene in America reminds me of the fighting my five year somtimes gets into with all his other 5 year old friends at playtime…just a bunch of squabbling babies on both sides.
Time for a real 3rd Party to arise end this Chaos.
February 8th, 2007 at 11:36 amWhat a bunch of hypocrites you all are! So blindly following the party line, even if it undercuts your own “beliefs.” To wit:
This morning Speaker Pelosei will be chauferred in her government-owned black Chevy Tahoe sport-utility vehicle to the Rayburn House Office Building -– where she will be the lead witness on a global warming hearing held by Science and Technology Committee.
The Tahoe emits 11 tons of greenhouse gases per year, according to U.S. Department of Energy.
The agency ranks it as “one of the worst†vehicles on the road, according to http://www.fueleconomy.gov, a non-partisan government web site.
Many models of the Chevy Tahoe are unavailable in Rep. Pelosi’s home state because the vehicle fails to meet California’s strict fuel-economy and environmental standards.
The 2005 Chevy Tahoe 1500 4WD gets 15 miles per gallon in city driving.
Rep. Pelosi’s vehicle is also exempt from federal gasoline taxes.
Rep. Pelosi voted to raise the federal gasoline tax five times in the past six years.
Also, check out this morning’s New York Post editorial addressing Speaker Pelosi’s desired air transportation in “Nancy Pelosi, carbon criminal.”
Stand on your own two feet and quit following the party line!!
February 8th, 2007 at 12:46 pmThe secret service told her she could not fly commercial. She is after all third in line to the presidency. Can’t have her choking on stale peanuts now can we?
February 8th, 2007 at 12:52 pmTo dim:
Thinking for myself JT (is that you Lord?) and not having to rely on a Newscorp rag to do my thinking for me, you note it’s a 2005 model. Hmmm, makes you wonder when it was purchased… let’s see… who was running congress then? So the vehicle is purchased; should she tell government purchasing to just chuck the vehicle? You’d then fake bitch about waste there! Also who chooses the vehicle: Secret Service, the Sergeant at Arms or Ms. Pelosi personally?
California’s strict fuel-economy and environmental standards.
Oh I see, Pelosi wrote California state law while just becoming the Speaker of the House after being minority leader in the past few years! Talk about incredible multitasking! Also I see you not note these mystery models banned by Cali… And I don’t mean the ones in your toybox with “matchbox” stamped on the bottom. You do know that STATE and FEDERAL are different, right?
Also on throwing out things with no details about gasoline taxes and votes(which seems to be the par for the course which starts these fake-outrage stories…) Again, do you think a “in the past six years” a Delay and Hastert House would have allowed the Dems to bring a imaginary tax increase bill to the floor, much less there be an opportunity for Pelosi to vote on one? Why do I think you can’t cite a single bill in which a vote on gasoline taxes even occured? Your “facts” smell as if they had been pulled from your bottom. Best go back to that imaginary madrassa you tried to get an education in. And reverse “class warfare” sounds idiotic.
JC: While I agree that career politicians get ingrained in the little DC game (Lieberman, Biden McCain) and a 3rd choice is needed badly, would you suggest the elected 3rd in the Line of Succession take Amtrak to cross the continent? Maybe in a hatchback? I guess the detail that she said she’d take commercial coach totally passed you up (but wonder how the Secret Service would love that?) Can you, JT and the Post invent the transcontinental matter transporter?
Come on guys, Anna Nicole Smith just died. Can’t you use that with fake stories of madrasses, campaign bloggers and airplanes to distract the masses from the VERY interesting Libby trial, the nasty increase in aircraft being taken down by the enemy, and that both Homeland Security and the Iraq Coalition Provisional Authority just pissed away billions of dollars.
February 8th, 2007 at 4:33 pmYou mean Lou Dobbs is STILL ON THE AIR? About time he should follow the example of Hugh Downs and start PITCHING laxatives because the lying diarrhea that comes out of his stinking maw–THAT makes him the ideal candidate for “laxative testimonials!”

February 8th, 2007 at 6:26 pmDon’t even use the moniker CNN and the word journalism in the same sentence. Reporting does not go on at that network. They take whatever one sided source that aligns with whatever agenda the reporter or the network is promoting, and they go with that.

February 20th, 2007 at 3:37 pmLou,
How low can you go. A shill for the Moonie Times!
February 20th, 2007 at 11:11 pmI love Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton. I hope they show the country really how bad they can F#&$ things up in the next year and a half before the election. I agree the republicans were too busy stuffing their pockets to win the election and deserved to go down like a prom date , but there has to be something than the dems. I honnestly don’t understand how these people can claim to be educated and take the stance they do. They say pull out of iraq, but offer no solution. If we leave, Turkey one of our strongest allies will break up to form Kurdistan and Iran will become Persia once again. Once they stop fighting with themselves guess who they will hate next. We have to stay and permanently change the culture. No I am not a Nazi for all of you progressives reading there is a difference between us changing their culture and what the nazi’s did in WWII. That is the Nazi’s were a society of hate, the same way the radical muslims are. They are destroyers and would glady kill every democrat and republican if given the chance. Like we were at war with the Soviets during the cold war the Muslims have said that they hate us and want to kill us like the Soviets said that they wanted to bring communism to our door step. The bottom line is that the dems can’t get past saying the simple statement that “war is bad, it kills people”. We have to look forward future threats.
February 25th, 2007 at 10:32 pmIf this is all a bunch of crap, then how come Pelosi has come out in public and stated just that. Maybe most of you people are the ones believing the lies.
