In Nov. 2006, Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) compared Miami to a “Third World Country.” In an attempt to deflect criticism, he told CNN on Jan. 16:
The Miami Herald took a poll on my statements. Seventy percent of the people that responded supported me. Most of the radio and television stations down there that have done similar polling also supported me.
In an op-ed yesterday, Maria Elena Salinas, anchor of “Noticiero Univision,” said that the poll cited by Tancredo is nonexistent:
My office consulted the Herald about the alleged Tancredo poll, and they told us there was no such poll.

Heresay.
February 7th, 2007 at 3:38 pmRepugs are LIARS. There’s a special place for them in hell.
February 7th, 2007 at 3:41 pmI’d say liar with a healthy dose of crazy in this case.
February 7th, 2007 at 3:43 pmOops.
And now I’m certain that his constituency will hold to account their senator - who by virtue of our governmental structure - is there as an executive representative of them, the state of Colorado, and by extension, the entire United States.
It is wholly inappropriate for a government official to engage in deceit and illicit behavior, whether privately or publicly, and this cannot be tolerated or condoned.
And now back to our universe…
February 7th, 2007 at 3:45 pm“Miami” and “Herald” must be his dogs’ names. They and Barney agree with everything Tancredo and Bush say. There is a stray named Spot would disagrees, so actually it’s 75%. Tacredo was being modest.
February 7th, 2007 at 3:46 pmBy golly, Tancredo, you better get your skin down there and TAKE that poll!
February 7th, 2007 at 3:46 pmWe’ll stand for no more of this making stuff up. Not in our country you don’t.
And that goes for you too, George….. and Dick……… and Alberto……… and Jimmy Inhofe……and……..on and on and on ….
And how’s this ANY different from anything he has said? Hey, if the voters in his district accepts what this nut says without protest…then he will continue to make up things believing he can get away with it!
He has a good role model in the White House!
February 7th, 2007 at 3:49 pmDo credo’s come in any other color besides tan?
February 7th, 2007 at 3:49 pmNow my “oops”. I gave Rep. Tancredo a promotion to “Senator” in my previous post. Please exchange “douche bag representative” for “senator” and remove “executive” and all is fixed.
I apologize to all honorable senators (I’ll email all three of them apologizing personally after this post) for placing them in the company of such a character.
February 7th, 2007 at 3:50 pmRaven
Stop it! I might have been drinking my soft drink! LOL
Beige Beliefs?
February 7th, 2007 at 3:53 pmTancredo lied to the American people and should be held accountable for vagrant misrepresentation of fact. Isn’t that worth a misdeamor and a fine, or two? What a scab-picking, bottom feeding douche bag.
February 7th, 2007 at 3:57 pmI think Tancredo was just reelected this fall (?) He first took office in 1998, so I assume he did. I’m born and bred in Colorado too, but I swear people just were not that crazy as they appear to be in that state these days. I haven’t lived there since 1993…could it have changed THAT MUCH?
Tuber…a Senator isn’t a promotion from a Representative.

February 7th, 2007 at 4:09 pm“Most of the radio and television stations down there that have done similar polling also supported me.”
Hey, the conservative media will do that.
February 7th, 2007 at 4:12 pmMaybe Seixon can explain how the methodology of this non-existent poll is still valid, if you ignore the hypotenuse of republican stupidity, and use the random sampling of his pocket lint as the basis for the conclusion?
:)
February 7th, 2007 at 4:13 pmToo much rich “white money” in CO and TX, and not enough common cents.
February 7th, 2007 at 4:22 pmTancredo is a half-cocked, half-croked (tanked) republican “barker”. Don’t believe a thing he says - just like the majority of the GOP! They all come from the House of Lies & Deceit. Making up statistics is just the tip of the corrupt iceberg for them.
February 7th, 2007 at 4:43 pmWith those discriminatory comments by Tanker Tancredo, I’d say he should waste neither his money nor his ego by thinking that he has a chance in hell of becoming Prez. He’s a doofus.
February 7th, 2007 at 4:44 pmMore GOP “smoke & mirrors” and “sleight of hand” second-rate parlor tricks - hah! making up polls is Mickey Mouse for these guys. They’ve made up EVERYTHING since Day 1 of taking over the government of this country. A true gang of renegades & thugs we have here.

…….Pink Paradigms……….
February 7th, 2007 at 4:51 pmJesus is not smiling upon your lies Mr. Tancredo.
February 7th, 2007 at 4:55 pmTancredo just knows. Thats all you need to know.
Now when are we gonna go after Italians?
February 7th, 2007 at 4:56 pmTancredo is dumb, he doesn’t know he is actually the minority. Its way past what he is trying to prevent. Get over it, learn Spanish.
February 7th, 2007 at 4:57 pmIn a recent poll taken in the Southwest 100% of those polled were fervently in favor of impeachment of the entire bushco. The margin of error was +/- 0%. The only thing missing from the above is sample size. It was an unbiased, objective study of three dedicated Bush-Bashers and has as much validity as Tancredo’s poll. In his defense, those people who said no poll existed have no credibility because they have no way of knowing the poller or pollees. They can say they knew of no such poll and may or may not have made a true statement. To say there was no poll is beyond their knowledge.
#15 VVGFU Which two squares were you adding and taking the square root to come up with your hypotenuse? However, since the hypotenuse is the side opposite the right angle in a triangle it stlii won’t work as you are talking about the stupidity of the right. Perhaps you should have used hypothesis instead. Please don’t take offense as none is intended. I am just having a little fun at your

Change “stlii” to “still” and add “expense.” at the end.
My bad. VVGFU you may take your shot!
February 7th, 2007 at 5:03 pmI wonder if Tancredo’s grandpa had a visa when he got off the boat from Palermo? And did he learn to speak English? I doubt he even wrote Italian…those dumb Sicilians…SENd them all back to wapo country. Ciao. Stupido. Facia Bruta.
Tancredo NO TE CREO imbecil.
February 7th, 2007 at 5:34 pmGee, another Republican liar. Knock me over with a feather.
C’mon trolls, let’s hear you defend Tancredo.

Lying sackocrap!
Oh yes he is…
Next verse, same as the first!
what a psycho - heckuva job, Colorado!!
February 7th, 2007 at 7:56 pmDear ThinkProgress:
When you post things like this, should you really be surprised that all you get are childish comments? Does even one of those comments above have any real content whatsoever? Do you think this makes you look like anything but a bathroom wall?
As for the post, believing its statements would require me to believe that Salinas is telling the truth (sorry, not willing to do that), or that if she did contact the Herald they weren’t simply wrong (it could have been a quick online poll), or that Tancredo simply got the paper wrong. AFAIK, there are other papers in the Miami area.
If TP is going to make statements like this, shouldn’t it do even the slightest bit of fact checking? Doesn’t TP have any regard for its credibility?
February 7th, 2007 at 10:32 pmFunny how Ms Salinas notes how the Cuban community in Miami are mostly “political” refugees, and not “undocumented immigrants”. The simple fact is that Cubans “fleeing” the Castro regime are given a pass that no other Latin-American immigrant can ever get.
February 7th, 2007 at 10:55 pmWhen Salvadorans and Guatemalans were fleeing oppresive right-wing regimes (and those regimes’ death squads) back in the 1980s, they were “economic” refugees. Haitians fleeing years of political chaos were turned away (or arrested upon landing) because they were deemed “economic” refugees. But Cubans, well, they were fleeing “political oppression” at the hands of a hated Communist enemy. Of course, the first Cuban “refugees” weren’t exactly fleeing simply because of politics, but their support of the right-wing, mob-controlled Batista regime which oppressed the Cuban poor for over a decade prior (the regimes before Batista were as bad) and were economically quite well off. Had it not been the bad policy of the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, carrying on the bad policy instituted by the Eisenhower administration, determined to eradicate Communism from the Western Hemisphere (and, worse, our immediate “back yard”), and worked with the Castro government from the outset, Castro wouldn’t have needed to rely so heavily on the USSR (he did increase Cuban-Soviet trade in all areas, but Castro didn’t intend for the Soviets to be his sole support; Castro wasn’t doing much different than Nehru and Nasser were doing during the same period). Had Castro not been turned into the Western Hemisphere’s pariah by the US, the Cuban economy wouldn’t be so abysmal (which, it should be noted, has rated as a primary reason for so many of the “refugees” in the past 20 years; Cuban “refugees” are only allowed entry if they claim “political asylum”, otherwise they have to have an established “sponsor”).
Now, this doesn’t mean that Tancredo is anything less than a bigoted cretin, but I do get a bit tired of the immigration policy hypocrisy when it comes to the Cuban community.

An awful lot of “ifs” in there, sport. Maybe Salinas has a brain tumor causing her to behave irrationally, too. But maybe not. So why don’t you get back to us in 24 hours after you’ve researched the situation and tell us what you find.
February 8th, 2007 at 12:20 amIf TP is going to make statements like this, shouldn’t it do even the slightest bit of fact checking? Doesn’t TP have any regard for its credibility?

And from what do you derive your credibility? Tancredo said it was the Miami Herald. It is in the public record, and you have stipulated to it as well. In order for your theory to work you have to presume that someone else is lying, but you haven’t provided a shred of evidence to that effect. And if that doesn’t work, then you move on to speculate that Tancredo said one thing, but actually meant another thing.
Yeah, you’ve laid down a lot of substance there, sport. Pretty lame try, if you ask me.
February 8th, 2007 at 12:29 amOh, and I particularly like that speculation that IF Salinas did contact the Miami Herald, and IF they had done the poll, they might have been mistaken.
Can you make a point based on known facts? There aren’t any in your post, except to say that Miami has more than one newspaper. Thanks for enlightening us on this key point.
I get a kick out of these intellectual cripples that come here and go through the motions as though they are actually debating something, when what they are saying is just so much noise.
February 8th, 2007 at 12:44 amAfter some thought, I have just the thing for Tom Tancredo:
“The Personal Border Wall”.
February 8th, 2007 at 8:28 amI did an instant poll of ten friends here in Miami and 80% of them said it was third world. Margin of error +/- 0%.
February 8th, 2007 at 2:44 pmTom, Tom, the LYING CRUMB
February 8th, 2007 at 4:37 pmStole a POLL and beat his drum!
The Poll was a lie
So Tom did sigh
And showed to all that he was a DUM-DUMB!
I’m not Republican nor a fan of Bush, but I do like Tancredo.
So what if Tancredo was mistaken about a poll?
It’s not like he lied under oath (though I forgive Clinton ;) ) or lied us into a war and spied illegally on citizens.
From the little I’ve seen of Tancredo, he comes off as an unpolished, honest, regular American; a populist who speaks his mind. He’s intelligent and doesn’t preach hate as one would surmise from what has been said here. Y’all make him out to be David Duke!
His points are valid: what holds this nation together? Are we a nation in any sense of the word at all? His ancestors came in, integrated, and became American. Italians aren’t British like our founders, but he integrated in as did millions of other nonBritish immigrants. Immigrants today however don’t desire to integrate as they once did. Perhaps it’s because of the sheer numbers, but America has a serious problem.
Tancredo has also condemned race based caucuses because, well, they’re racist. Was he truly David Duke, he would commend the race based caucuses and establish his own white caucus. Tancredo wants Americans to lose their hyphenations and come together.
What’s there not to love about the guy? If we continue down the path we’re on now, America will split up into groups of squabbling minorities, whites included. We’ll be just like the Balkans… won’t that be fun.
By the way, Al Gore’s record on immigration is nearly as good as Tancredo. I hope he runs since it looks like the president in 2008 will be a Dem.
