Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski (D) is considering replacing the “state’s climatologist,” George Taylor, who has suggested that “natural variations” — not human-induced greenhouse gases — are to blame for the Earth’s recent warming. Taylor’s view is not in line with the state policy of Oregon to reduce greenhouse gases, nor is it in line with the consensus of the scientific community.
Conservatives have been up in the arms over the Taylor replacement. Yesterday, Drudge breathlessly reported “Governor plans to fire Oregon climatologist for skeptical view of warming…” And last night, Tucker Carlson blasted Oregon’s Governor for considering replacing Taylor. Watch it:
The right wing has resorted to distorting the facts and spreading misinformation in order to attract attention to the issue. Here are the facts:
1) Taylor is not the “state climatologist.” Oregon abolished the position in 1989. He was bestowed the title by Oregon State University, not by Gov. Kulongoski or the state of Oregon.
2) Taylor is not a “climatologist.” Taylor is a meteorologist. He does not possess a PhD or have a background in climatology.
3) He will not be fired. Taylor will not lose his job or income, which comes from Oregon State University. He will merely be stripped of his title, which he never earned but claims to retain. Gov. Kulongoski has the right to appoint a climatologist who is an expert in the field and adheres to the state’s climate policies.
UPDATE: News Hounds has more.
UPDATE II: Blue Oregon has more on Tucker’s “hot air.”
UPDATE III: Brian Hines confirms with Oregon State University that Taylor is not the “state climatologist.”
Transcript:
But first, global warming.
An international report appeared the other day echoing what Al Gore has said for a long time: global warming is real and civilization probably is causing it. The majority of climate scientists appear to agree with this conclusion. The majority, but not all of them.
George Taylor, Oregon’s longtime state climatologist, holds a contrary view. Taylor believes global warming is mostly the result of what he calls natural variations, long-term trends that humans can’t control. Among climatologists, this is not considered a crackpot view, but political in Oregon, it is heresy. The Democratic governor of that state has announced that he will trip George Taylor of his title for daring to question the causes of global warming. Keep in mind that the governor is not a scientist. He hasn’t cited any dishonesty in Taylor’s scholarship. He just doesn’t think he ought to be allowed to disagree with the conventional wisdom on global warming.
But wait. Whatever happened to freedom of speech and the sanctity of the scientific process? The very people you’d expect to stand up for a scientist’s right to practice science in the face of politics have been silent in the case of George Taylor. Why? Because his position isn’t fashionable at the moment, and in the end that’s all that counts, unfortunately.
What do you expect from “Tucker”.
Hey thats a new name for a boy that wants to be a girl, “Tucker”.
Heh.
February 8th, 2007 at 4:05 pmTucker wants to be the next Bill O’Liely…… No research just blab out whatever nonsense comes off the top of his pointy head. LOL
February 8th, 2007 at 4:08 pmI lost all interest in Tucker after he lost the bow tie. He just doesn’t look as goofy as he used to.
February 8th, 2007 at 4:10 pmSo Republicans are against political attacks against employees? Wow, that’s shocking news! Oh wait, they’re against attacks on Republican employees, that don’t exist, haven’t happened, and aren’t accurate! But any scientist or employee that points out a fact gets the wrath of Libby, Rove, and the entire GOP mouthpieces! Too funny! How typically Republican and Hypocritical! And they wonder why they’re almost permanently the losing party.
February 8th, 2007 at 4:10 pmBye, bye, Taylor, bye-bye. Don’t let the door hit ya, where the good Lord split ya. Putz!
February 8th, 2007 at 4:10 pmTucker Carlson and Matt Drudge are the daily dose of CLAP-trap for the right wingnuts who do not believe in Global Warming. GLOBAL WARMING IS “A CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER”(with NO apologies to fellow right wingnut Tom Clancy) and the sooner the right realizes that the better off America will be, and the world a better place to live in…or would we all rather evolve into mermen and merwomen to live in the flooded waters that will drown all the continents of the world?
February 8th, 2007 at 4:10 pmWhat do you expect from “Tuckerâ€.
Comment by ForTruth — February 8, 2007 @ 4:05 pm
That’s right. Dear, dear Tucker. The champion of commonsense over facts.
February 8th, 2007 at 4:10 pm” Because his position isn’t fashionable at the moment, and in the end, that’s all that counts”
Yes! Yes! Majority rule!
February 8th, 2007 at 4:11 pmFORTUNATELY
On the House floor, Congressman Bart Gordon just tore the GOP to shreds on the smear!! Pelosi is second in line to the presidency. Shouldn’t we protect her??? Republican hypocrites! Here is the video of Gordon and Barney Frank nailing the GOP.

what the hell is Tucker doing wearing a normal tie!?
February 8th, 2007 at 4:13 pmThe GOP doesn’t care about Nancy’s security, they are pissed that a woman is in that chair. Party over country, always with these pukes.
February 8th, 2007 at 4:15 pmThanks Tucky; since you are far removed from us here in Oregon, thanks
February 8th, 2007 at 4:16 pmsince you know not your hole from the ground in ass
we thank you for your amusing comments.
Leave to the righties to get all hysterical about NOTHING.
February 8th, 2007 at 4:17 pmDamn facts.
February 8th, 2007 at 4:17 pmSo i was watching the Republican representatives drone on about the lies concerning Nancy Pelosi and the military plane. All I heard was blah-blah-greenhouse gas-blah-blah-global warming-blah- . . . wait? what?
Here the great deniers of global warming and contributing factors of carbon emissions are actually using these points to complain about the ‘possible’ usage of a military plane? (wonder how much our military contributes to global warming in Iraq??).
Anyhow, i guess we can count a few more republicans (believe one to be R-Steve King (Iowa) and whomever spoke before him) into agreeing that global warming exists and is definitely influenced by man.
February 8th, 2007 at 4:18 pm#10 hil
where have you been? Tucker hasn’t worn the bow tie since around the aftermath of Katrina.
February 8th, 2007 at 4:19 pmcontact Tucker at Tucker@msnbc.com
February 8th, 2007 at 4:20 pmSo, Taylor isn’t losing anything but the title he never deserved in the first place? How typically -Republican.
February 8th, 2007 at 4:24 pmTucker got his job because of his Daddy and is as clue less as his dance steps. Al Gore’s movie showed the world the truth. Big Business will do what ever they can to keep doing what their doing. Tucker is wrong about everything he talks about. As for his religion well now we know it’s really Satan he’s following but using God’s name. NBC should wise up and let Tucker and Tweety go. We have had enough of lying journalist paid by the White House. Thanks to the Libby trial the word is out about the media. Now we’re showing the world just how dumb America is by seeing the results of what we’ve done but still saying it’s not happening. Chicken little the sky is falling Americans will believe what ever the White House says.
February 8th, 2007 at 4:25 pmyeah, but you are dealing in facts. that’s just not tucker’s style. he so much prefers the disinformation style of g.e.’s ‘news’ broadcasts.
February 8th, 2007 at 4:26 pmWhere is the bow-tie? At least the bow-tied distracted the viewers from the fact that Tucker is a no-talent-assclown.
February 8th, 2007 at 4:30 pmI guess there are no researchers on the payroll for Tucker. That or else they get paid to look up Drudgery every now and then.
February 8th, 2007 at 4:30 pmDammit, TP! How’s a right-winger supposed to get all fired up about something when you keep throwing in a bunch of dumb ol’ facts? Jeez!
February 8th, 2007 at 4:31 pmWhy does Tucker even pull a paycheck? More and each day, it seems that the media is searching for the lowest common denometer. In Tucker, they may may reached bottom.
February 8th, 2007 at 4:32 pmFox has also been covering this. “Special Report” mentioned it last night.

February 8th, 2007 at 4:38 pmThe right wing media outlets do seem to be scraping hard these days….
February 8th, 2007 at 4:43 pmI’m sure they have this sinking feeling that the American populace knows they are making things up, and are tired of listening to fabrication, regardless of its titillation quotient.
And the people are changing the channel.
what the hell is Tucker doing wearing a normal tie!?
—- hil
He lost the bowtie back in april of last year. He states he decided on his own, but gossip at the time was that his producer Rick Kaplan had it in for the bow tie since day one. hehe
February 8th, 2007 at 4:43 pmI can take this anymore. This constant lying by the right wing is going to make me go crazy. Everyday it’s something. When will it stop?
February 8th, 2007 at 4:44 pmI think the liberal media has done a great job smearing liberals the past few weeks.
February 8th, 2007 at 4:52 pmTucker’s Bowtie: Tucker seems to have ditched the tie shortly after Jon Stewart spanked him on Crossfire:
STEWART: Now, this is theater. It’s obvious. How old are you?
February 8th, 2007 at 4:55 pmCARLSON: Thirty-five.
STEWART: And you wear a bow tie.
(LAUGHTER)
STEWART: Now, listen, I’m not suggesting that you’re not a smart guy, because those are not easy to tie.

February 8th, 2007 at 5:03 pmIt’s abnormally cold here in the Northeast and today London had 3 to 4 inches of snow which is extremely abnormal for London. But…. according to the dumf**ks, this is just natural variations. The southeastern part of PA has had very little precipitation this winter. I fear there will be a summer draught here in southeastern PA. That means no local fresh sweet tomatoes.

February 8th, 2007 at 5:12 pmAlso ForTruth,
What is it exactly that you do not want me to reveal about yourself to this site?
Comment by copper shopper
I told you already twice, I want you to start by telling me what operating system(s) I use. Can you do that?
February 8th, 2007 at 5:14 pmFor years now, Tucker has had the worst ratings on his networks. At times, his entire audience amounts to less than 35,000 viewers. But, they still carry him. That’s the way our “liberal media” works.
February 8th, 2007 at 5:21 pm#35…. CD with Flags…..
February 8th, 2007 at 5:23 pm(Central New Mexico mountains)
We had an unusually wet summer, followed now by a much colder and snowier winter than usual.
People haven’t seen anything like this in their memories.
copper shopper, do you have anything in the way of a cogent argument to offer about anything or are you just providing us with more proof that Bush cultists are dumbasses?
February 8th, 2007 at 5:23 pmI told you already twice, I want you to start by telling me what operating system(s) I use. Can you do that? — ForTruth
The lunatic probably cannot even tell you what OS it runs.
I would dearly love for it to try to hack my computers, then I can gather the info I need and get it thrown in jail.
TP can you do something about this loon taking a dump in all the threads with this total nonsense and it’s false, idiotic threats to “hack” us?
It is really getting old, again……..
February 8th, 2007 at 5:31 pmI hear you Raven. There certainly is a change in the weather patterns, and I’ve been here on this earth for many, many seasons.
February 8th, 2007 at 5:31 pmRaven,
My husband’s dream is to retire in New Mexico and I keep telling him that NM is a dessert climate and that we shouldn’t add more stress to the water resources in NM. Now, if you are getting more rain, then I might rethink the move… heard there is good fly fishing in NM.
February 8th, 2007 at 5:33 pmOT…. This is going to be interesting. Of course it’ll be released on a Friday.

February 8th, 2007 at 5:42 pmI had some of the same trepidations about water, being from the Great Lakes and all…
Still , trusting, I followed where the spirit led, now I’m shoveling the snow I thought I had left behind.
If you come out, look into the smaller, older towns down the Rio Grande, edging up to the mountains east and west of the valley.
There is OK flyfishing here, better up north closer to the Colorado border. I caught and released a couple of 18 and 19 (wild) trout up there last summer….
Thanks Raven for the tips. Can’t wait for warmer weather. Missed a lot of good fly fishing last year because of intense political involvement which paid off heavily… helped get some great Democrats elected here in Southeastern PA.

February 8th, 2007 at 5:50 pma brown and a “cuttbow”, a hybrid cuuthroat/rainbow…..fishing big furry streamers……
Should be a good year for the fish, what with the healthy snowpack……
Glad to hear NM got some moisture. I hear they were getting to some dangerous lows on water tables and stuff. I really like Northern NM.
I’m still waiting for more snow here in Northern AZ.
February 8th, 2007 at 5:51 pmI am going to miss most of the summer fishing, wildland firefighting. Gotta keep the trout streams from getting burnt over!
February 8th, 2007 at 5:52 pmI used to hang out in Asbury, NJ, just across the river from Easton.
neighbors!
February 8th, 2007 at 5:54 pmRaven, almost neighbors. I’m little further south and west, Kutztown area. My home page links to an active Democratic club. There’s some good fishing near the Crayola crayon plant along the Delaware River near Easton.
Environmentalist: support Crayola. They care about our world.
Gotta go. looks like the troll has moved on to the next post. bfn
February 8th, 2007 at 5:59 pmI think it is clear by now that the global warming deniers can’t be helped. I suspect that nearly every one of them is also a 30 percenter. It is tough times for this crowd, and when they lash out you can almost smell the desperation.
February 8th, 2007 at 6:36 pmKeep in mind that the governor is not a scientist.
The pot calling the kettle black.
Whatever happened to freedom of speech and the sanctity of the scientific process?
What does that have to do with hiring someone competent and with the right credentials to do the job?
Oh, I forgot -blind following of the Great (mis)Leader is what is actually valued in wingnuttia. Not experience, knowledge, or competency.
February 8th, 2007 at 8:10 pmOMG!!! No bow tie! (or was I the last to find out?)
February 8th, 2007 at 8:23 pmWhy is Tucker Carlson even on the air? His only claim to fame is that he never graduated from college but yet managed to get his own TV show. Think it had something to do with his family having a few hundred million dollars?
February 8th, 2007 at 8:37 pmMeteorologist??? I don’t know about the rest of you but they have no credibility in Wisconsin.
February 8th, 2007 at 8:42 pmisn’t he bush’s nephew or something – I’m sure he was in the bush family photo where dubass was wearing the flood pants with cowboy boots
February 8th, 2007 at 9:40 pmAll I know is since Tucker left CNN for this new gig, he carries a Zoolander look on his face (Kind of a hurt vulnerable pouty male model look).
Must be getting alot of coaching from his image advisors.
I really can’t watch him without laughing. Turn the sound down and try it yourself.
February 9th, 2007 at 12:49 amSo the guy is a meteorologist?
Isn’t that fancy talk for a weatherman?
And we all know how accurate those weathermen are don’t we?
February 9th, 2007 at 1:26 am2) Taylor is not a “climatologist.†Taylor is a meteorologist. He does not possess a PhD or have a background in climatology.
Another whopper from Faiz.
You are truely ignorant.
http://www.stateclimate.org/
“The ARSCO in each state shall be hosted by a state entity, preferably an agency in the public services sector. Examples of such state agencies or institutions are:
- accredited universities
- environmental agency such as a Department of Natural Resources
- separate state agency at the Governor’s staff level
The individual holding the directorship of the ARSCO, usually the State Climatologist, must also be qualified in terms of education and experience. The individual should also have the desire and the “heart†to serve his/her state’s need for climatological data and information. The individual should be a willing advocate on behalf of the ARSCO and the other partners. The individual must be able to devote an appropriate amount of time to make the ARSCO successful.â€
February 9th, 2007 at 1:42 amUm, “Steed”, according to http://www.ocs.orst.edu/page_links/ocs_people/george_t.html, Taylor does NOT have a PhD in ANYTHING (not even meterology). What your link to the stateclimate website has to do with Taylor’s qualifications is beyond me. YOU are the one who presented a “whopper”. (I’d also suggest that he may not truly be “qualified in terms of education and experience”.
February 9th, 2007 at 3:25 amHey Tucker, get a haircut!
February 9th, 2007 at 9:17 amSo I wonder what our little Tucker has to say about the six US Attorneys who’ve been terminated & are being replaced with Republicans so they can beef up their resumes.
February 9th, 2007 at 9:25 amWhy can’t either side of this debate–which it is still a debate–be heard without the media, politicians or other outside influences interfering? I’m really sick and tired of people in the Clinton camp forcing global warming down my throat, and I’m sick and tired of the Bush camp saying it’s not true. Is there any scientist who isn’t paid to say one thing or the other on either side willing to debate this thing on live public TV? Isn’t this topic worthy of a clear unbiased debate on public television? Don’t we owe it to our children and their children?
February 9th, 2007 at 9:42 amhenry, it’s NOT A DEBATE any more – hasn’t been for years. you’re just that far behind the curve. you’re either for not committing global suicide, or you’re against not committing global suicide. the choice ought to be pretty easy.
February 9th, 2007 at 12:09 pmHenry, you miss the point….everything is the fault of global warming…cold winter, global warming…warm winter, global warming…hurricanes, global warming…no hurricanes, global warming…rain, global warming…no rain, global warming….
I am still waiting for that ice age which was scientific consensus in the early 80’s.
They can’t tell whether it will ran tomorrow or what type of winter next year, but by god they are certain what the temperate will be in 50 or 100 years and its impact on the earth.
Remember we were all going to die because we were destroying the ozone layer? Don’t hear much about that now do we, because there data was inaccurate and has changed. That was just in the last 10 years.
February 9th, 2007 at 1:57 pmhole’s still there logical, you’re just unaware of it because they don’t report it on Fox.
February 9th, 2007 at 2:15 pmI haven’t watched Fox in years….so wrong!
And I sure don’t watch ABC, CBS, or NBC or should I say the media wing of the Democratic party.
Look for the more experienced people here…in the 70s it was consensus that we were headed into a ice age or we would have widespread famine throughtout the US and the world by the year 2000.
February 9th, 2007 at 2:51 pmlogical – you’re totally right – there’s nothing at all going on with the atmosphere, and every little thing on earth will be all better after we spend another trillion or two to kill every last arab and muslim…..thanks for the epiphany, i’m just going to sit and read my bible til jesus comes to pick me up….i’ll stop meddling in and commenting on the activities of those who i mistakenly thought were my equals, ’cause now i understand i’m too simple to understand all that important stuff they do for me.
February 9th, 2007 at 3:00 pmbaker,
You make a lot of assumptions about me based on my unwillingness to be the hysteria of global warming.
When someone points out correctly that there have been similar doomsday scenarios even in the past 30 years which were false, you get in a huff.
I wonder if you know that the NY Times ran an article in 1938 or 39 proclaiming the world’s end due to global warming? They predicted it would have happened by now. Hum…..
February 9th, 2007 at 3:13 pmMerman, Pop, MerMAN
February 9th, 2007 at 3:40 pmIllogicalSC needs to actually check out the data. He cannot deny, without perjuring himself, that the greenhouse gas level is higher now than it has been since the Eocene, that the polar ice caps and glaciers all over the world are disappearing at an every increasing rate, that spring is starting earlier and fall is ending later than in recorded history, that migratory birds aren’t migrating as far south anymore as they used to, that temperate climate plants and animals are now found much higher on mountains than they used to, that the sea level has in fact risen, that temperatures are higher now than they have been in recorded history, that tropical vector-borne diseases are being found far to the north of where they used to be, and so on and so on. To be faced with this data and to maintain that it is only business as usual indicates that one is living in a fantasy world, a polite way of saying that one has become delusional.
