America, this is your health care system:

“A paraplegic man wearing a soiled hospital gown and a broken colostomy bag was found crawling in a gutter in skid row in Los Angeles on Thursday after allegedly being dumped in the street by a Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center van, police said. The incident, witnessed by more than two dozen people, was described by police as a particularly outrageous case of ‘homeless dumping’ that has plagued the downtown area.”

Welcome to America! Even Iraq had a socialized healthcare system before we bombed the country back into the Stone Age for no reason. Here in the United States where we tout the notion that we’re a top, leading nation -number 1- disadvantaged people are treated like animals and recieve no health care at all, if they don’t have thier own insurance. The veterans who come back from fighting this insane war are left to fend for themselves. Pensions have been cut, VA funding has been cut, everything- has been cut or done away with, entirely. It really is a sin that this government that loves to shovel money on crony business and friendly corporations, neglects the people.

My God, our country has lost it’s heart and mind. What on earth will it take for it to wake up? It’s unbelievable. 20 years ago people wouldn’t even have imagined this was possible. It is time to recognize that our people are lost and tumbling into some warp hole. We are seeing the destruction of a society. People don’t seem to be grounded in reality …..s if everything is must a video game, text message, or tv show. As if things are removed from some sort of direct living experience. People don’t feel it seems…..
I re-read my comment and it is pretty strong. But….I have to say, in my view, it’s this bad.

Liberal in New Mexico. I hear you. Your comment: “It really is a sin that this government that loves to shovel money on crony business and friendly corporations, neglects the people.”

People have forgotten that the government in America IS the people. It is a shame that we even talk about whether our government “neglects” us or does not neglect us. It puts the “government” above us….seperate. We need to remember that WE THE PEOPLE are the government. We have people to represent our needs in a town called Washington. The media has created a sort of Hollywood government that intimidates the ordinary American…fancy suits, cars, dinners, events….all “as seen on TV”. It is not the people that are neglecting the people, but small group of criminal radicals that has taken over the controls …out of the hands of us, the true government.

Yes Spudge Boy….I agree. The media is a big part of this. It’s like putting a virus in the drinking water and everyone gets sick. The warped ones have the megaphone and blast it out to millions. But it’s more than that. We as a people have been in this fantasy land just about from about the time Disneyland opened. ( well not exactly …probably maybe before this) We have been living on air in this country….beliefs such as: “we’re no. 1 ( better than others) ” “shoot first and think later ( brute force is good) ” I look at the Marlborough Man now and I want to puke. I used to find him attractive in an American “tough guy sort of way”
( leaving out the smoking issue for a minute) when I was much youngher. It’s as if the bill for this country’s arrogance and self centeredness is coming due. For real. We are an addictied and Narcissistic Nation. When addicts hit bottom it ain’t pretty. What is it we have to face? We aren’t number 1 and never were. It was a fantasy. All people are equal and valuable. 2 Money and Beauty don’t cut it…it’s a shallow petty vulgar American dream ( Anna Nicole bought into it and it didn’t deliever did it. ) 3. The world is shrinking and the cowboy’s range with it. 4. Brute strength will not save us……we have become a very two dimensional comic book people. ….Well……I’ll stop….but boy could I go on.

When my two friends and I saw those bricks of $100 bills, we knew we had an opportunity. We knew that you only get so many chances, and you have to make a decision whether you want to take the plunge. There are moral issues, you know. So we took a few bricks each. And each one had almost half a million in it. Then we went AWOL.

The war hadn’t been going on very long, but we knew it was going to get ugly and real bloody. So we took the bricks and then knew we had to disappear. One of my buddies had the resources for us to use a military plane to reach the outlying area’s. From there we had to hide our tracks. We knew that they would charge us for desertion. So we knew the path we had to take. Now that I look back at it all, I see that nobody was following us. They were too busy covering their own tracks.

We live in a nice place now. We watch each others backs and are the best of friends. There have been no threats or discoveries, but we keep an eye out. You just never know. We have enough to live like Kings for the rest of our lives. I won’t tell you where we live but it is nice. Far from the blood and horror. Far from the police states that the former free countries are turning to. We are free now.

And I say ‘we’ as we are not in the streets yet trying to change this disgrace.
We disperately need universal health care. To the selfish that is out of the question. My parents are part of the ’selfish’ being the staunch republicans they are and it is so hard to understand.

I would go way more back in time. I know, this maybe seem unrelated but think about it: The industrial revolution. Hordes of peasants and farmers going into the cities looking for a better income and working in factories with the worse working conditions in history (other than slavery). No wonder why Marx was inspired by this terrible sight in his famous book. After the industrial revolution it was more important to produce goods and stuff for people who could afford it, than people itself. Now, yeah, since the beginning of the 80´s in the past century, there was the current economical trend to privatize everything, that nothing interfers in the path of trade: no governments, institutions, laws, rights, etc. Everything can be stepped on if it gets in the way of money.

The signs are very clear. If a corporation needs to fire hundreds of workers in the US to move the factory to Bangladesh and use kids with no fingers in order to produce their stuff, they will do it. Unions will protest, but unions will be labeled as anti-progress, cuz they seem to attack the very heart of free trade, which means that the corporation can do as it wants, cuz is the symbol of freedom.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The chairman of a Michigan young Republicans group is accused of raping a 21-year-old woman while both were in Cleveland for a convention last July.

A grand jury in Cleveland returned a 17-count indictment Wednesday against 32-year-old Michael Flory, including charges of rape, kidnapping and aggravated burglary. Flory is chairman of the Michigan Federation of Young Republicans, an organization for members of the party between 18 and 40.

Of course at 445 billion dollar defense budget , who can afford anything !!..Spending 10-12 billions a month in Iraq is sucking everything else dry. The defense budget was 279 billions in 1999…mashroomed in ten years in large numbers…

If a war breaks up with Iran..the Americans will be asked to put more money on the table to keep it going on and to feed it.

This time we are in it alone. Tony Blair of England is in his way out..British Parliament in no rush to start another war…

Don’t expect a check from Israel….It is always the other way around. Meaning more billions of dollars for more conflicts and wars by the Neocons war party.

How many hospitals will 12 billion dollars build? ! that is just one month expense in Iraq…and we have been in this close to 47 months.

    Comment by Spudge_Boy — February 9, 2007 @ 10:18 pm

It’s sad. But, in a way, I’m not surprised. For over 20 years now small towns and cities have flooded large cities like LA and NY with their “problem patients” using a practive referred to “Greyhound Therapy.”

Greyhound is a reference to the bus company. In small towns and cities around the country you just unload your problem cases (those patients that are taking up too much time or money) by taking the patient down to the bus station. Then you buy a one-way ticket to LA or NY, etc. and then help the patient board the bus. The small towns benefit in 2 ways. They “get rid of” a problem patient and they save money in the long because it’s one less case to deal with.

Health Care “rationing” at it’s finest. We can thank Hillary for meddling in our health care system (an attorney tampering with medicine?) for the disintegration of it initially during her husband’s terms….which she botched abysmally, BTW. I’m wondering precisely what her forte and “draw” might be….she can’t speak to large crowds without sounding rote and angry – she botched the health care system at the time and then allowed Bush to come in with Big Pharma and monopolize it all because when she got through with it, it was seriously “broken”. I don’t believe that she can be trusted; besides, has anyone gotten a very clear picture of “who Hillary actually is”?? I know she was a dyed-in-the-wool Rethug back in the 70’s….and is definitely “pro war” in her personal philosophy….so would the “real Hillary” please stand up? Besides, when the Whitewater debacle is revisited along with the mysterious suicide of her lover/partner scrutinized, I doubt that she will hold up as a candidate. Too many skeletons in her closet/too fuzzy around the edges as to what Hillary really believes.

  93. veritas says:

But back to health care and the subject of this thread, I believe our system is severly compromised and the “rationing” we all feared and dreaded is clearly here. We should not be providing “free health care to illegal aliens” which is what we currently are doing and kicking our own indigent citizens out of our health care institutions. Something clearly is wrong with this scenario! Wasn’t there a thread last week about an illegal alien (aka “criminal” in this country according to our laws??) who is bringing suit about not being afforded “proper” health care while he/she was being held? How twisted is this?

  94. veritas says:

You’ve proved (collectively) many times over that you detest your fellow citizens on the right–even wishing harm upon them, and now you expect me to believe that you and spudge care about everyone? More and more I believe that we Americans will have to take to the streets, in the near future, in order to secure some basic human rights for our people that are appreciated and funded by all other industrialized countries in the world. Last week I saw Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) ask Secretary of the Treasury Paulson to defend some basic questions about the budget submitted by the Bush administration. Secretary Paulson couldn’t answers coherently any of the questions. He was obviously embaressed. Here’s a man who was making $50 million/year at Goldman Sachs unable to answer the following: 1. Why is the US the only industrialized country in the world without universal healthcare?, 2. In order to resolve any shortcomings in the Social Security System, why couldn’t we just eliminate the salary caps any make wealthy people pay the fixed amount into social security on their total income?, and 3. How is it even moral that the Bush administration is cutting aid to children, veterans benefits, and funding for medicad while at the same time cutting taxes for the richest Americans? The Secretary looked like a dear caught in the headlights of a car. His response was ” well you and I just disagree on these issues”! The best country in the world heh? Tell that bullshit to the paraplegic dumped on the street by a hospital or to the elderly unable to pay for healthcare or medications. We must as a people start to value our social needs more than we value a new weapons system. We must start to vote our own self-interests because the government we now have only represents the wealthy and business.

Now, Gerald, I am not advocating hordes of illegals rushing into the US. These people left their homes and their families to provide them a better life. I understand the concern of US citizens but what US citizens should do, as I do in my own country is to ask the government to prevent this things from happening attacking the causes, not the consequences. I just dont understand why it is always easier for the average citizen to blame the poor people instead of blaming the government. NOw, Gerald, do you think that the health service issue is an illegal-caused problem? Come on, you are throwing billions each day in that clumsy occupation but illegals are to be blamed…I mean, really, come on.

  128. Gerald Gibson Jr says:

No I think politics being used in the place of technology is the issue with our medical state. If we pushed politics to the side and look for the most efficient way to handle th health care load with technology AND fair capitalism then the problem would be solved… UNLESS 10s of millions of illegals overload the system.

You said to attack the cause. The cause appears to be that the mexicans need to come to America to have a decent life. Otherwise they would just stay home…. sounds like to me they need some help making their OWN sustainable system. But instead they just come here.

If we could stop politicing EVERYTHING and just get some technocrats to solve these issues from a technical perspective then we could share that knowledge with Mexico so they could build their own highly efficient health care system… and economy…. and education system… we here in America have the money and the brains to figure out the best systems and then if we REALLY believe in the Jesus thing then we would SHARE that with others in need….

Seems simple to me… Dont exploit America… instead stay home and copy the good things America does and dont copy the bad things America does…. and if America would try helping others instead of only self interests then in the long run we are helping ourselves as well.

News for you. Since 1982 the mexican government has followed every single economical and social advice from technocrats, they had solved nothing regarding the poorest people. In fact, the trend is that middle class is vanishing and poor people is increasing. We have privatized everything since those times, under the excuse that public industry is bad, inefficient and corrupt (which is true, but also the private industry). I would like some economist explain to me how after a privatizing fever in Latinamerica, external debt is even more unpayable, and population has seen his income reduced crisis after crisis. True, a lot of that responsibility goes to our corrupt governments, no doubt about that, in fact, we are to be blamed, cuz we put these a-holes in the government.

But we dont want any help. Nobody wants US help, we all know how that help evolves into. We just dont want our resources given almost for free to foreig corporations, we dont want to be told how to live our lives or told us what stuff we have to buy. I agree with you, latinamerican governments should do more to support these people and keeping them here. But there are no jobs, Gerald, they went all to China and Thailand. But I dont read your protest again WTO and IMF or WorldBank who supports these kind of trade, this kind of abuse against unemployed people and kids who have to work 12 hours with no services whatsoever. I dont read your protest again corporations who promote this. I dont read your protest against technocrats whose economical doctrine is profit-above-all. Instead I read your example about insects.

The point was that rebuilding Germany and Japan WORKED. So it could work again anywhere that we choose to help and the helpee choose to accept that help.

America needs a new source of energy. Lets say that Gore to win the presidency and the democrats get even more of Congress and a plan is put forth to put the new solar panels on all American homes and to pay Mexico to build factories to make them for us…. two birds with one stone.

Of coarse in a REAL plan all the details would have to be worked out so it would be realistic, but the point is that technology and economic growth can accomplish just about anything. Doubts and fears fix nothing.

    My post was deleted.

With the condition that they hadnt a communist government and that they bought american products in order to get out of the hole.

Its not help Gerald, its trade, and we have had a lot of that here. Its like promoting free trade in Africa, well, after all the valuable resources that europeans have taken from Africa, the least that they can do is to return what they took from them…but I wont hold my breath.

WRONG. Equal chances for everybody accomplish just about everything. Economic growth is against equal chances…

When my pay check gets bigger that is economic growth. Then I have a more equal change to afford insurance or retirement or to start my own small business… enonomic growth is like electricty applied to an electric engine… it make things happen.

This website is crap. I have never had a database driven site just eat its own data and send it off into a blackhole somewhere… that is called data corruption and is a sign of an unstable data environment… hire a professional to fix this crap…

When one guy makes 20 million, thousands of other people lose. I didnt invent this, I see it every f*cking day.

And yeah, I will complain all my life every time I see somebody supporting economic exploitation. Who do you think is paying your bigger check? The company? Yeah, right. Its the people, most of them poor. Why do you think every year the gap between rich and poor gets bigger and bigger? Am I inventing something? No, it´s right there if you want to see it. But you want to be in your well-balanced society, ok, I admire that about the US, but you have to look further and see, that one day you will lose your job cuz raw capitalism is all about accumulation of wealth, the gap is widening, have you noticed this? One day, one guy will have everything, while the other wont have anything. You think Im inventing? Thats the trend…

Even when/if the minimum wage is increased, those recipients of the increase still won’t able to afford insurance, retirement or start their own small business. Where then is their economic growth?

    Look up “economies of scale”.

If we can make our technological society stream lined and we SHARE the technology we should be able to make the American quality of life available to all people that want it. Poor and rich. If there are poor people somewhere being exploited it is because of GREED like you mentioned NOT necessity. If we use some of our money to specifically foster systems of growth for the poor (think FDRs New Deal) then we can totally change the quality of life for all of central and south Americans. Same for Africans and the Middle East. The greedy bastard Americans have learned how to push technology to great extremes. I think that power should be used to give back to the people that have been expoited… and since giving away all we have in America would be dumb we should instead help them build a system like ours so it is a WIN-WIN.

  146. Juan C says:

Ok, Gerald, truce. I agree with some things.
I dont hate capitalism just becuz Im resented. Im in the upper-middle class. I dont hate people making money or rich guys. What I cant stand is that the rights of those people making money step upon the rights of people. In this world, if you have the money, you can have sex with a 12 y/o russian. Thats sick, but why? becuz money has more value than a life. This is what this society is leaning towards… if you have money, you can get away with everything. Why? Becuz money is more valuable than laws or rights. There are hundreds of examples.

I would like to see a moderate capitalism, perhaps that could work, but so far that is not happening. I dont mind people getting rich, but seriously, how many rich people do you think have made their wealth honestly and by not breaking any law?

    Comment by Juan C

Judging from history most of the big BIG corporations going back for all of humanity (before they were even called corporations) most of them broke all kinds of “laws” or just plain morality. From the robber barrans to the slave traders to the spanish forced labor of the south and central Americans. That is one of those human scourges that could be solved with just a little common decency… like Jesus and Bhudda and Ghandi had said… it doesnt take a big sacrafice… just a little common decency.

  160. Barfly says:

So you are saying that because of the very people that are causing this bad system to exist dont want it to be made better that it is unrealistic to do the right thing? That is like saying we cant leave Iraq because Al Qeada would think we are weak…. who CARES what they think?

No, I’m saying “they” will actively take steps to nullify any such actions, and they will get their american business associates to also take actions to derail it. And it isn’t just the US and Mexico involved, y’know. Maqueadoras, run by the Chinese, the South Koreans, the Japanese, and even some European business interests, capitalize on Mexico’s illegal Central and South American immigrants. Any change in the current state of affairs would upset Mexico’s labor supply applecart, which capitalizes on the poor, and illegals coming to Mexico. They like the status quo just fine.

America needs a new source of energy. Lets say that Gore to win the presidency and the democrats get even more of Congress and a plan is put forth to put the new solar panels on all American homes and to pay Mexico to build factories to make them for us…. two birds with one stone.

Sounds promising – except that then (as now) they are competing with American companies, using American labor, health, and safety practices. Mexico has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of enforcement of environmental statutes, and any such program would naturally lead to an even worse pollution situation in Mexico. Just as we foolishly thought we could install democracy in a country that has never previously known it, tampering with another country’s immigration policies either overtly or indirectly, is destined to failure, unless they ask for help first.

Of coarse in a REAL plan all the details would have to be worked out so it would be realistic, but the point is that technology and economic growth can accomplish just about anything. Doubts and fears fix nothing.

    Comment by Gerald Gibson Jr

I’m as liberal as the next guy here, but years of experience in human nature leads me to believe that “technology and economic growth can accomplish just about anything” is just plain fairy-tale talk. People act from self-interest (or perceived self-interest), and in many instances will go out of their way to sabotage a perfectly good idea, simply because someone convinced them it was bad, or a threat, and they didn’t want to waste any time thinking about the issue.

  165. Goebbels says:

I moved to Calfornia from the Midwest recently because of my job, and I have never seen a health care system as broken as California’s, with so many uninsured people and a fragmented provider system with competing HMOs, PPOs, insurance companies, MediCal and hospitals that all seem to work at odds with each other and whose bottom line is profit. The county hospitals are truly the worst, where patients get care as bad as in some really poor third world country. The worst excesses of America’s current health care system is found here in California. some sort of single payer system needs to be instituted here to start reforming health care here.
