Harvard chooses first female president.

By Amanda Terkel on Feb 10th, 2007 at 11:38 am

Harvard chooses first female president.

After 371 years and 27 white men, Harvard University will this weekend appoint its first woman president, Drew Gilpin Faust. “With Faust’s selection, half of the eight Ivy League schools will be run by women: Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University and Brown University.”

    Yay!! Congratulations, Drew Gilpin Faust!!

The first credible thing she should do is annul Bush’s diploma…

  3. Liberal in New Mexico says:

That’s great! I remember hearing not too long ago that a man uses one side of his brain until about mid-age, before he starts using both sides. A woman, on the other hand, finds it quite easy to use both sides of her brain, all her life long. It’s amazing that we men have kept women down so long, when it’s clear they’re smarter, more talented and seem to exhibit more compassion than men, as a rule. You’ve come a long way, baby!

  4. Sharon Cox says:

    Bravo…About time….Blessings

  5. unbelievable says:

I truly hope she’s a real woman and not another woman pretending to act like a man to have climbed the ladder…

The game is still, after all, a Patriarchal good ol’ boy network. You don’t get to play by being oppositional. Let’s hope she hid it well…

  6. Liberal in New Mexico says:

I also remember hearing that a homosexual man’s brain is more like a woman’s. That being the case… I guess gays are MORE-EVOLVED! Regardless, I congratulate the first woman president of Harvard University and wish her every success.

  7. Juan C says:

What a relief for Jason that a woman is not running his Ivy League School, Stanford. :)

  8. DRxJ says:

Quick! Someone hide this post from Jason Misogynist Hendler! His world is quickly crumblin’, and this could be the coup d’etat that destroys his last capable firing neuron!
    Just sayin’!

  9. Mario says:

While I admit I may bit younger than most of you, I think I bare a different perspective. To me, this isn’t that newsworthy. Women are just as capable as men and I really don’t feel this should be news. …but then I read Liberal in NM’s comment.

@ liberal in NM – “they’re smarter, more talented.” Women are not inherently smarter or more talented. That kind of attitude leads to sexism – it’s exactly the kind of attitude that might make this story news worthy. While men and women may have different strengths, that does not make one sex inherently “more talented.” Men play an important role in society and families and that needs to be recognized.

If you made that statement in a racial context, I believe everyone here would be up in arms.

  10. Granola Hippy says:

This just proves that women can be every bit as pretentious as men. :P

  11. Zooey says:

Oh yeah and descipline, then more money.
    Comment by Spudge_Boy

Excuse me? No frickin’ way, Spudge.

I raised my sons on my own, I earned my own money*, and handled the discipline.

*Let me take this opportunity to acknowledge that the one and only thing my sons’ father managed as a father, was to pay child support. It helped a lot.

    # 10 Mario,
right on buddy , couldn’t agree with you more , and the worst part of it is that such sentiments are considered “progressive ” ,rather than SEXIST .

  15. Zooey says:

*Let me take this opportunity to acknowledge that the one and only thing my sons’ father managed as a father, was to pay child support. It helped a lot.

As in money? I rest my case.
    Comment by Spudge_Boy

Shame on you, Spudge. There’s more to being a father than writing a check each month. See the bold portion above. I rest my case.

  16. Zooey says:

freeman must be a dude. Sorry your so bored with feminism. We’ll go on without you. I hope you don’t have daughters.

  17. freeman says:

  18. freeman says:

two daughter a son and a wife of 22 years , in fact .

  19. SKdeA says:

#3, does Bush have a Harvard diploma? Didn’t he go to Yale? And of course he didn’t deserve that diploma either…

At least it gives one faint hope for the future if the schools that pump out the elite are not exclusively run by rich old white men, perhaps a little empathy might slip into the minds of the next generation of rulers…

But I am not holding my breath!

  20. freeman says:

Zooey you must be bored with thinking for yourself .

  21. Liberal in New Mexico says:

#10 + 17- If a woman can use both sides of her brain at the same time, to me that’s “talented”. If you have a problem with that remark, I suggest you take it up with Harvard University. They’re the ones who came out with the study, last year. Sexist? I don’t think so. Prejudiced? Maybe… when it comes to pretentiousness and ignorance.

You must be bored with inventing non sequitors.

  23. freeman says:

I don’t think there are really any important differences between the sexes worth accept in the bedroom.
If I were to treat people of another ethnicity differently than my own I would concider myself a racist .I feel the same way about gender !

  24. Zooey says:

Spudge, that’s pretty lame. Just sayin’

A court cannot measure the love a parent has for their children, and they cannot mandate it. They can measure the income of the parties (both parties) and make a determination as to the needs of the children.

It sounds like you are a good dad to your girls, that’s what’s important.

  25. freeman says:

    # 26 spudge
No kidding man , now thats sexism and a grave injustice.

  26. Liberal in New Mexico says:

People are just people. That’s the point. It’s only when one tries to put labels, limitations and boundaries on things that problems arise. That goes for other cultures in other countries, too. Isn’t that why we find ourselves in this position -because we like to DEFINE things and put them in neat, little packages?

  27. Jules says:

It sounds like you are a good dad to your girls, that’s what’s important.

    Comment by Zooey — February 10, 2007 @ 2:24 pm

Bingo!!! My daughters Dad has worked very hard at being a good Dad. He is not good with disciplne, he is terrible at communicating (hence the ex), but he has tried very hard to back me up with our daughter and be there whenever she needs him.

Why is it that people think money is all it takes to raise children?

  28. freeman says:

    #31 Liberal
now your talking my lanquage !
Enough dogma ,ism’s,and 2nd hand opinions , Love is the only thing truly sacred ! You don’t need dogma or orthodox religion , or any other ism The truth is inside all of us !

  29. Zooey says:

That is a nice sentiment Zooey, but that is not reality.

Of course it’s reality! Do you think that every time my ex tried to drag me into court to reduce his child support, that my income was not considered? I did the forms, my income was right there.

Let me ask you: Why do you think it is called a Paternity Case and not a Maternity Case?

It’s hard for a woman to run away after having squeezed out the child, so it’s fairly obvious that she’s the mother. The father could be anyone. That’s the Paternity case.

Because the case is about who the father is and how much money he will pay montly.
    Comment by Spudge_Boy

After the paternity is determined, then there is a child support case. Do you think women don’t pay child support?

  30. freeman says:

I don’t know Zooey that sounds awfully sexist to me !

  31. Zooey says:

Money is the last thing that goes into being a good father. Going to the park is free. Teach your kids about the world they live in is free. Making sure you hug and kiss your kids in the morning and before bed is free.
    Comment by Spudge_Boy

Ok, that’s all I needed to hear. We agree. I wish my sons’ father would have done those things.

  32. freeman says:

I’m the mother ,therefore I have more rights to parenthood ?Apply that thinking to race and you’d sound like a bigot wouldn’t you ?

  34. Anon says:

“Let me ask you: Why do you think it is called a Paternity Case and not a Maternity Case?”

Spudge_Boy, it’s called a “Paternity Case” because the mother is automatically known. Just sayin’

  35. freeman says:

Thats easier than examining your statements isn’t it .You make sexist remarks on the thread and then you expect a free pass.

I’d say don’t be an idiot, but I know you can’t help yourself.

    (Thanks, Spudge)

George W Bush — Education: BS Yale Univ., 1968; MBA Harvard Univ., 1975

He was a legacy case. Once they let you in, they don’t fail you because it looks badly on their admissions (I used to date a guy who went to Harvard, and he told me this).

  40. freeman says:

Spudge , its attitude like several posted above that have created the situation in the courts .Just callin it like I see it .

  41. freeman says:

if you treat a jew or a latino or a black or a whiteor a muslim or a christian differently than a member of your own race than your racist .
which is obvious to anyone but a bigot or he or they would re examine their thinking and change .
The same applies to sexism .

  42. Anon says:

And when a women abandons her child and a man takes her to court, why is it still called a Paternity test, even though the father is known and he is trying to get child support from a female?
    Comment by Spudge_Boy — February 10, 2007 @ 2:49 pm

Depends on if the parents are married, if they’re married there is a presumption that he’s the father even if he is not the biological father. The biological father can contest that, hence, “paternity”…

  43. Marie says:

I was going to step in here and reply to #3, but I see unbelievable answered. What took me so long to get to the bottom is that I was interested in reading comments between Zooey and Spudge. I really don’t think Spudge and Zooey were opposing one another; they were just missing each other’s points.

Spudge, you did the right thing and were really screwed by the system.
Proves the old adage “no good deed goes unpunished.”

  44. Anon says:

I just want to know how we got from “Harvard chooses first female president” to “Paternity”!! ;)
    See you guys later!

I recall from anthropology classes that is precisely the reason why, in some societies, inheritance/property etc. was always passed down through the maternal side.
I wish I could remember which societies, and when.

obviously Neanderthal Sumner did far more damage to Harvard than they were willing to let on…not that the incoming female president isn’t highly qualified and deserving; just odd that Harvard would pick this point in time to get their collective heads out of the big fat smelly derriere.
