Murtha to probe use of military aircraft.
“Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) chairman of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, said on Thursday that he’s planning hearings this spring on executive and congressional travel on military aircraft. Murtha said he’s requested from the Defense Department records on travel and logistics from the past two years. He asked the Defense Department to hand those over within a month.” (Via Atrios)

No, this is actually much funnier than that. The Republicans (and the Pentagon and the media) made a big deal over an absolute non-issue, and now Murtha is going to use it to bite them in the ass. I can guarantee you that the Republican use of military aircraft during the 109th is going to be a bit, uh, unorthodox.

For one thing, what is the point of these Senators and Representatives flying in and out of the Green Zone time after time? What possible purpose could there be in that? All they do is tie up military personnel who have to give them a PR tour of The Emerald City. They learn nothing. For another, how much is military aircraft used for political purposes? I know Bush/Cheney do it all the time, using a tremendous amount of fuel. But what about their political cronies and appointees? I’m glad Murtha’s doing this. February 10th, 2007 at 10:38 amRepubies will rue the day they tried to smear Pelosi on the security aircraft issue. They did tap into public resentment of the “goodies” Congressional reps receive…for their (previously) 2 and 1/2 day work weeks.
Those goodies are being reined in, and I am sure some of the reps feel that isn’t fair. Pelosi’s arrangement is for national security…cutting back on junkets is for national integrity.

It’s about the rapidly dwindling numbers of people jumping ship from the Republican Party – that where the “stopping in the tracks” is taking place.
