We want to be back in touch and stand on the principles
that founded Western thought, and our American ideals, first generated by Aristotle, the father of western thinking, 500 BC, who said that the only way to insure ourselves that a speaker directed to an audience (as big or small as that is) can be discernable as authentic enough to trust with our futures, is when he embodies the three principles, or offices, of truth: Ethics, Logic, and Passion.

When a speaker represents all three components in his speech, he can be trusted to lead. If not, we can be amused, but not be used or abused by the power of character that has no intelligence or goodwill, resulting in a lack ethics.

And don’t swallow anything someone dishes out that doesn;t demonstrate a claim, for or against whatever they are railing about, because if there is no claim, there is no logic and that person is not being logical.

And never ever trust a person who cannot display a passion for what he is up to, because without the temperature gauge of his commitment, the energy, the physics, and therefore the possibilities for action are limited, because it is passion that generates the ideas to act, and action causes energy. Passion allows the will to complete the goal with Ethics and Logic intact.

Don’t be a fool, as predicted.

Calling the governments of Iraq and Afghanistan, allied with the United States, “traitors,” Zawahiri warned the United States “is about to depart and abandon them, just as it abandoned their like in Vietnam.”

Zawahiri also took aim at Democrats, directing a part of his message to them.

“The people chose you due to your opposition to Bush’s policy in Iraq, but it appears that you are marching with him to the same abyss, and it appears that you will take part with him in the defeat and certain failure, with God’s permission,” he said.

“And the American people shall discover that you are all one side of the same coin of tyranny, criminality and failure.”

Historian Allan Nevins was harsh on Douglas, “When it [slavery] paid it was good,” wrote Nevins, “and when it did not pay it was bad.”

Nevins consequently judged that Douglas did not “regard a slaveholding society as one whit inferior to a free society.” All in all, Nevins rather brutally assessed what he called Douglas’s “dim moral perceptions.”[22]

Graham Peck finds that several scholars have given brief opinions to the effect that Douglas was personally opposed to slavery, none of them with “extensive arguments to justify the conclusion”. He cites some more recent scholarship as (equally briefly) finding Douglas “insensitive to the moral repugnance of slavery” or even “proslavery”.

Incidently, I live down the street from his grave. I never knew that until now.

Stephen Douglas was anti-slavery. He actually wrote the law that was passed that ended slavery.

You do know that Republicans hate gays, right?

John Howard’s Iraq policies are very unpopular in Australia. He is facing the prospect of high negatives and a resurgent opposition leadership facing the next election. Howard is the supreme “agent provocatuer”, so there may be some hidden local strategy in his statements. But more likely the White House asked this as a favor from Howard. The pattern is clear. Think of the recent attempts to spike the debate regarding Obama’s alleged attendance at an Islamic Maddrassa and now Kristol’s pathetic and historically false zinger. The right is obviously very worried about facing Obama as opposed to Clinton – so expect a lot more lies and subterfuge. Obama’s response to Howard has been very good. He should also openly ask Howard if it’s okay for American politicians to interfere in the Australian electoral process.

As for Bill Kristol – what a waste of hot air. His dreadful magazine has been heavily subsidized by Rupert Murdoch (mercenary extraordinaire) since its inception. Kristol’s daddy Irving gave him his public prominence by birth and he then stood out as Dan Quayle’s chief of staff in what seems to be his only day job of note. What a history of achievement – making an over-his-head fool sounding halfway presentable and living on the dole handed out by a (mostly) tits & ass media mogul with an extremist agenda and a much deeper sense of insecurity than you might imagine. Think about it – Kristol lives in that teensy weensy intellectual space between his neocon glossy rag and FOX News – both Murdoch playthings. How pathetic. Nobody can accuse him of independence of mind. Somehow, Kristol’s pseudo-intellectual demeanor continues to fool people that he has an original or enlightened thought in his head. The fact is that Kristol is a political hack of the most thuggish variety, only with a little more icing (or is it makeup?) on the exterior. Kristol is a fully vested member of a club of extreme righties that lurk below the radar only to surface every now and again to poison the public debate with anti-progressive invective. Watch him and you will see his modus operandi again and again and again.
