“The Bush administration plans to cut funding for veterans’ health care two years from now — even as badly wounded troops returning from Iraq could overwhelm the system. Bush is using the cuts, critics say, to help fulfill his pledge to balance the budget by 2012. … Even though the cost of providing medical care to veterans has been growing rapidly — by more than 10 percent in many years — White House budget documents assume consecutive cutbacks in 2009 and 2010 and a freeze thereafter.”

If you don’t think cutting veterans’ health benefits is good for America, then you don’t support the troops.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
February 12th, 2007 at 10:13 pmChimpy’s just not happy getting the troops killed off in a bogus war, he has to f*ck them over for the rest of their lives.
February 12th, 2007 at 10:14 pmThat should serve as a little reminder how stupid or desperate somebody must be to join the armed forces. Go serve for lies and suffer.
February 12th, 2007 at 10:17 pmYeah, Bush cares about the troops, NOT
February 12th, 2007 at 10:18 pmIt’s not enough to send our soldiers to the meat grinder in Iraq, but he wants to cut veteran health benifits THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN CUT BY THIS ADMINISTRATION, YET AGAIN..
Some fear if Obama runs for office he may be assinated.
Has to be untrue…as how can this freak we have in office survive?
Cut VA health care - isn’t that just like Bush?
February 12th, 2007 at 10:19 pmSomewhere I read, and I’m paraphrasing here: regardless of where you stand on the war, if you can’t take care of the veterans you already have, don’t create more.
At what point will they cut widow/widowers benefits?
Theresa
P.S. It’s a pleasure not to see the usual wallpapering BS that has polluted this site recently.
February 12th, 2007 at 10:22 pmHopefully that will also serve to rethink militarism in general. I mean not the kind of militarism where some dumbbats sit in a cozy livingroom in front of the TV and ’support’ ‘our’ troops, no the kind of militarism where people actually believe it’s cool to join the military to be a hero six feet under or to get de-limbed and dumped in a side street in Los Angeles or elsewhere.

February 12th, 2007 at 10:46 pmBesides the fact that the armed forces have adopted the entire commercial space before any movie show in theaters,
my teacher friends tell me that the recruiters hang out on the schoolyards and wish to have a recruitment office on campus of course.
If people want to do the world a favor they should kill the militarists that get us in trouble, all over the planet, again and again.
God forbid he (they) should think about balancing the budget by eliminating the gigantic tax cuts that he wants to make permanent (that primarily favor the wealthiest among us) or stop spending $2 BILLION dollars a WEEK in Iraq. Much better idea to destroy the safety net for Americans, including our veterans. Frankly, I know what (who) needs to be drowned in the bathtub (As Norquist said).
February 12th, 2007 at 10:50 pmTrue Blue, I don’t know who Racheal is, but I respectfully request that you realize what I am saying. BUSH and Co. are screwing our men and women in the military. I want them taken care of, nothing more, nothing less. We send them off to war and then we are not going to care for them?
February 12th, 2007 at 10:50 pmThe vision of a peaceful planet does not include militarists, re-public-cons or any sort of religious fanatics.
February 12th, 2007 at 10:50 pmThat makes the vision wishful thinking I guess.
I wish veterans would hold demonstrations outside of the MSM headquarters. It seems this would be harder to ignore than a Washington march. Force them to report on these issues by going directly to the reporters. I think this would work for many issues and not just that of the vets….good/bad idea?

How the World Can Stop Bush
By PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS
Paul Craig Roberts was Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Reagan administration and Associate Editor of the Wall Street Journal editorial page and Contributing Editor of National Review has a suggestion on how to stop Bush.,
“The Bush Regime has taken the US outside the boundaries of international law and is acting unilaterally, falsely declaring American military aggression to be “defensive” and in the interests of peace. Much of the world realizes the hypocrisy and danger in the Bush Regime’s justification of the unbridled use of US military power, but no countries except other nuclear powers can challenge American aggression, and then only at the risk of all life on earth.
The solution is nonmilitary challenge.
The Bush Regime’s ability to wage war is dependent upon foreign financing. The Regime’s wars are financed with red ink, which means the hundreds of billions of dollars must be borrowed. As American consumers are spending more than they earn on consumption, the money cannot be borrowed from Americans.
The US is totally dependent upon foreigners to finance its budget and trade deficits. By financing these deficits, foreign governments are complicit in the Bush Regime’s military aggressions and war crimes. The Bush Regime’s two largest lenders are China and Japan. It is ironic that Japan, the only nation to experience nuclear attack by the US, is banker to the Bush Regime as it prepares a possible nuclear attack on Iran.
If the rest of the world would simply stop purchasing US Treasuries, and instead dump their surplus dollars into the foreign exchange market, the Bush Regime would be overwhelmed with economic crisis and unable to wage war. The arrogant hubris associated with the “sole superpower” myth would burst like the bubble it is.
The collapse of the dollar would also end the US government’s ability to subvert other countries by purchasing their leaders to do America’s will.
The demise of the US dollar is only a question of time. It would save the world from war and devastation if the dollar is brought to its demise before the Bush Regime launches its planned attack on Iran.”

February 12th, 2007 at 10:56 pmHe sure likes using them for fodder in his illegitimate war. He won’t acknowledge the dead - he flies them home in cargo planes in the dead of night, with photographers and newspeople forbidden access.
He insults the wounded, who, coming home with horrific injuries, are caught in a web of bureaucratic red tape and denial of services. He now proposes to cut even further, the costs of care for these service people, many of whom have suffered life-changing injuries.
George Bush is a sonuvabitch, who should be made to suffer for his crimes against humanity. That he still lives in comfort is an obscenity.
February 12th, 2007 at 11:00 pmI know a bunch of great guys from the ‘Veterans Against The War’ movement. That’s right, they should show up in front of the familiar window spot at ‘Good Morning America’ and hold up some nice signs about the tax cut for the Slavedrivers on the expense of those who left their live or their limbs for this country.
February 12th, 2007 at 11:01 pmDon’t forget to slap MacKain in the face on your way to the studio…

Because this kind of news reporting is really bothering me, much more than it used to.

February 12th, 2007 at 11:14 pmI’m sorry you missed the sarcasm in my statement. But it’s true, he is trying to balance the budget. Perhaps I was to subltle. It pisses me off to no end how he treats our troops.
Noticiably missing from this debate is hacker bob, our resident Marine and die-hard supporter of der fuhrer.
I wonder, what does Bush’s proposal do for the morale of the troops in the field? Get wounded, soldier, and you’re on your own! Don’t even think about coming crawling back to Uncle Sam for help. You volunteered for this Army! Now get out there and do your duty and quit complaining about the lack of armor, the lack of weapons, and the lack of ammunition. We went to war with the army we had, not the one we wish we had.
Besides, if you die, the Press Secretary will acknowledge your life as “just a number.”

February 12th, 2007 at 11:15 pmRecently, Time magazine had a story on how good the VA medical system has become. VA hospitals are rated among the best in the US. The story was also in some other periodicals. There were people then who were afraid that the ‘compassionate conservatives’ would shit can the system, because it puts a good face on socialized medicine. It look like chimpie and his trolls are going to do their damndest to do that very thing.
February 12th, 2007 at 11:15 pm#32, Wasn’t that (your death/major injury)(according to Bush) just a comma? He’s such a prick.
February 12th, 2007 at 11:21 pmWhy doesn’t this surprise me? It’s not as if this prick hasn’t done this before. Yet he crisscrosses the country claiming that they’ve spent more on VA health care than the Clinton gang. It’s a shell game and the soldiers are going to suffer.

From the article:
I don’t see how anyone can take this as anything but a slap in the face of our women and men in uniform.
This also reveals that Bush’s promise of a balanced budget will be achieved through fiction.
Indeed, by keeping the War Costs off-budget, Bush has given us the illusion that the deficit isn’t as large as it really is. Bush and Congress could pass a balanced budget tomorrow, using this same fiction, and push the entire deficit spending into emergency supplemental authorizations until the debt grows so large the government can no longer receive any more credit. Then the entire economy of the United States will collapse. Only this time, it won’t have much of a global impact, because the wealth will have already been transfered out of the country in the form of off-shore trust accounts.

THIS is supporting the troops?!?! Someone explain this to me — I must be missing something, because I just don’t get it.
This is not just a slap in the face to all the people who have served in the current war and those who have served in previous wars, but every last person who has ever worn a military uniform. Just because they may not have served in wartime and/or been wounded in combat doesn’t necessarily mean that they don’t depend on the Veterans’ Administration for healthcare — in fact, I personally know of someone who does. Since she’s single and mostly does freelance work, she doesn’t receive benefits either through a spouse or through an employer — and since she also doesn’t make much money, she apparently relies upon the VA for a lot of her healthcare so this will affect her as well.

Someone very close to me was released for Medical, like so many others whose injuries prevent them from returning to full duty. She lost all but 20% of her pancreas and almost half her liver.
She is also now a full blown diabetic. She has also been losing her eyesight.
She was kicked off medical , by some benefit “review board”, the only reason she still has any medical at all is because her husband re-upped, because of the medical. Hopefully he stays alive. They said there was no proof her diabetes was not heredetary……

Bushs watch, NOT a decrease which is a propaganda tool of the Democrats to make it look like Conservatives somehow dont properly care about and fund the troops along with their healthcare.
Nothing can be further from the truth.

What Neuter ignores is the fact that there has been an influx of over 23,000 wounded women and men, thanks again, to Bush. As those numbers increase, funding for their care will decrease under Bush’s proposed budget. Bush will leave it to the next president to care for the troops while he gets to claim he left a balanced budget.

Read up on the cuts to veteran services in 2003 and 2005.
The increase is directly because of the Iraq war. Large increase in the limbs lost in this war, by skimping on armor they are paying more for prosthetics. The Iraq war is costing a bundle. But they will dump the vets to the streets with the other vets already there from previous wars.
I have been protesting veteran cuts and vets getting screwed over for a long time.

I factored in the quotient for the influx of over 23,000 wounded women and men.
Thusly, 63% GAIN since Bush took office, INCLUDING the 23,000 wounded women and men.
Roughly a 20% cut yes, but still a NET GAIN of 63%.
Overall it is 83% - 20% cut = 63% GAIN under Bushs watch.

Only if you have an independent auditor’s access to the books could you “factor” in anything. You went from making a lame point based on the article to a bogus one. You lose this round.

February 13th, 2007 at 9:59 amBush said Iraq would be just a comma in history.
Tony Snow said dead soldiers are just a number.
They are both goddam pricks.
Dead soldiers are just a number??? Yeah? Well, so is 28%.
February 13th, 2007 at 10:18 amHere’s something depressing. Talk about supporting the troops!
February 13th, 2007 at 10:25 amHow we support the troops
Why not withdraw funding for the Secret Service? That could solve many of our problems and save money as well.
February 13th, 2007 at 10:46 amshrub took voo-doo economic and turned it into doo-doo economics
February 13th, 2007 at 11:08 amThis has nothing to do with balancing any budget. This has to do with the GOPs ability to shape the publics opinion of the Democratic party. I think they know that Obama/Edwards/Clinton will win the Presidential race and they are setting them up for failure to “support the troops” (ala Dole’s ability to make the 1st issue of Clinton’s Administration, ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’)
February 13th, 2007 at 11:49 amDubbie prefers it that the troops just get killed (hence no body armor or armored vehicles 4 years in) - when they just get injured, they come back home and are just too expensive to maintain for the rest of their lives…..that’s how compassion fits in.
Look - as uber-capitalists first, and politicians second (and soldiers never), these guys see “the troops” as “labor”, and you know how well American uber-capitalists like to take care of their labor.
We can look forward to more of these types of moves, while our people serving in uniform can look forward to acquiring the status of WalMart employees….

February 13th, 2007 at 11:51 amCut the tax breaks to your friends and cronies instead. Better yet, since you started this war and have bankrupted the system, why don’t you just hand over all of your family’s wealth and move to Saudi Arabia where your oil friends live? They won’t mind putting you up, for a couple of decades. For sheer entertainment, you can fart for thier pleasure.
February 13th, 2007 at 12:41 pmSome good comments, now let’s do something to support our troops. Take that stupid yellow ribbon off your car. Then write, call, email (set your hair on fire) your congressional reps and tell them to stop this insanity and take care of our sons and daughters who are coming home from the wars. Then get out there and protest this shit!
February 13th, 2007 at 1:32 pmBelieve it or not they listen to us when we speak with one loud voice. After all, they take all that money from lobbyists in order to get our vote so they can stay in office.
Some fear if Obama runs for office he may be assinated.
Has to be untrue…as how can this freak we have in office survive?

This ” freak ” has his own bodyguard service and I am not so surte they are the SS.
When you run the largest drug smuggling and oil cartel in the world, you tend to have worse people after you thean the noraml SS can defend against.
I believe papa Bush has a ” bought and paid for ” mercenary group protecting his son George W Bush.
THAT is how Bush has managed to stay alive this long.
Well that, and the fact that he actually goes UNDERGROUND at Camp David and other undisclosed ” safe facilities ” the government has setup for him.
Offut AFB in Bellevue, Nebraska is another one of his favorite ” hiding ” places.
You know, the TOP SECRET and SECURE nuclear arsenal facility?
Right after 911, that is where he could be found, Offut AFB.
I fear that anyone who crosses Bushs path to try to attain the office of President, that they will meet with a strnage demise under nefarious circumstances.
A sort of ” killing of the king ” ritual to assassinate the will of the American populace.
Do you know what that does to the psyche of the American public when an extremely popular Presidential figure gets assassinated either publicly, ( Kennedy ) or privately?
It demoralizes the populace of the assassinateds constituents.
It allows them (Bushco) to put EVEN MORE fear into the public at large so they will bend and fall in line with Bushcos wishes.
The country took a HUGE demoraliztion hit on Nov 22 1963 when Kennedy got assassinated publicy in broad daylight.
Imagine what it would do to the moral of the populace to witness the ” savior ” Obama, get assassinated.
Devestating.
This is what they did to Kennedy.

February 13th, 2007 at 5:03 pmGee, I guess the 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 or older Veterans of World War I, II, Korea and Vietnam, to say nothing of the First Gulf War, Kosovo, Afghanistan(still going on), and the current Iraq conflict are going to suffer because of CHIMPya’s malice aforethought. All you veterans out there, are there still those among you who support CHIMPya, Torticola Cheney, Bushland Uber Allies and Their Unfair and Veteran-UNFRIENDLY policies? If so, start changing your minds with regard to how you regard them–CHIMPya and Co. ARE SCREWING YOU ALL OVER BIG TIME despite all you have given for the sake of America–RISE UP AND SHOW CHIMPya and Co. WHAT YOU THINK!!!!!
February 13th, 2007 at 8:16 pm[…] Think Progress » Bush wants cuts to veterans’ health care. “Even though the cost of providing medical care to veterans has been growing rapidly — by more than 10 percent in many years — White House budget documents assume consecutive cutbacks in 2009 and 2010 and a freeze thereafter.†(tags: supportthetroops wtf bizarroland veterans Iraq Afghanistan healthcare) […]

It demoralizes the populace of the assassinateds constituents. It makes us timid and bewildered as a people. The perfect oppurtunity to advance an agenda the people NEVER would normally go for in the same circumstance otherwise.
It allows them (Bushco) to put EVEN MORE fear into the public at large so they will bend and fall in line with Bushcos wishes.

February 28th, 2007 at 1:57 pmBush also tried to roll back combat pay for the soldiers, knowing he was bolstering up for the war in Iraq. This was reported on the Armytimes.com website but the article is no longer posted, luckily I saved part of the report a couple years ago.
*The Bush administration announced that it would roll-back ‘modest’ increases of benefits to troops. The Army Times noted, “the administration announced that on Oct. 1 it wants to roll back recent modest increases in monthly imminent-danger from $225 to $150 (a cut of 33%) and family-separation allowances from $250 to $100 (a cut of 60%) for troops getting shot at in combat zones.” http://www.armytimes.com/story.php
?f=1-292259-1989240.php*
By the way, it was the Clinton administration who originally increased combat pay for soldiers and Bush comes into office and tried to roll back all of the increases. How anyone can still support this president is beyond me. To still support this administration, you have to think like this administration; Ignore history, ignore intelligence, distort facts, attack fair debate, embrace incompetence and encourage failed policies. If you still support Bush know that you support everything I listed above. Even a lot of hard nosed Republicans are coming around. It took them a while but they are starting to see the light.
March 1st, 2007 at 12:07 pmAs a military veteran I am totally outraged at the conditions that have been ongoing, “unnoticedâ€, at building 18 at the Walter Reed Hospital. Am I supposed to believe that of all the political, congressional and senatorial big wigs that have enjoyed the medical facilities at this hospital never noticed anything wrong.
I guess then that the stories them of visiting returning veterans may be a hoax on us! If they had visited them where they are being quartered instead of a staged political picture event elsewhere then maybe something may have been noticed. If it was noticed and nothing was done a very different picture is being presented.
Our local media here in Tampa now states that one of our representatives (Bilrakis) had noticed this quite a while ago but he states that nothing has been done. How come the media never brought this tragic situation to light? Are our representatives now trying to cover their proverbial butts? If so they should immediately be subjected to the same fate as the low lifes running the hospital, and I don’t mean the underlings!
The ruse of “support our troops†by the republican party must come to an end. This is the last straw! They shout us down about protect our troops? I think not! This is their problem and our duly elected officials need to get off their asses and get this right! The next politician that has a medical procedure done should immediately be sent to live in the same quarters as these unfortunate soldiers. In fact why don’t we reverse the entire process and send the soldiers to the suites that politicians enjoy and the politicians all go to building 18. Maybe the politicians should have the same benefits as the troops and then maybe medical care for our troops would improve!
I’m so damned mad I can’t even write anymore. I’m fed up with the attitude of these politcians that I think they all need a real ass chewing. Forget about the next election, their ass is on the line right now. Do something!
Anyone wanting to quote this letter, anywhere, has my permission to do so. Please show your outrage and act upon it. Don’t give them a break, they haven’t earned it, our troops have!
March 1st, 2007 at 2:23 pmThe point you are missing is that CHENEY-ROVE,INC. never intended to win this war. The mass wounding of these troops is an entirely intentional component of the neocons’ war on the American middle class. The motivation is not profit$$, the neocons are PURE EVIL and derive sadistic, perverted pleasure in seeing “regular Americans” suffer infinitely.
You BABY BOOMER LYBYRAL FAGs (faggot=bunch of stix) are really enjoying your recruiter bashing with enthusiasm not seen in forty years when you showered returning Vietnam Vets with spittle, urine and feces. One unintended cosequence you may have overlooked; if the Muslims win, as you hope they do, you’ll BE FIRST ON THEIR LIST!
March 15th, 2007 at 4:33 pmIf a person got hurt while working almost any job in America, then the companies workers compensation insurance kicks in and takes care of the individual. Using this reasoning one should conclude that the military would take care of their troops, during and after, their time served overseas. No deductables, no costs, and no excuses.
March 21st, 2007 at 12:43 pmThe best thing any of us could do to help rectify the situation is to contact your local congressman or woman. Then get out there and help. The local DAV, VFW, and even some churches are trying to come up with volunteers to help in your local communities. These veterans are our countries protection and pride; Lets make sure they know that.
