Top Cheney Aide: 2007 Is ‘The Year Of Iran,’ U.S. Attack ‘A Real Possibility’»

ap060507020885.jpgAs the Bush administration ratchets up pressure on Iran, Vice President Cheney’s top national security aide has been sourced by the Washington Post — in the 10th paragraph on page A18 — saying that war with Iran is “a real possibility” this year:

Some senior administration officials still relish the notion of a direct confrontation. One ambassador in Washington said he was taken aback when John Hannah, Vice President Cheney’s national security adviser, said during a recent meeting that the administration considers 2007 “the year of Iran” and indicated that a U.S. attack was a real possibility. Hannah declined to be interviewed for this article.

Those with knowledge of the build-up to war in Iraq will recognize John Hannah’s name. In Bush’s second term, he replaced Scooter Libby as the head of Cheney’s national security staff. During Bush’s first term, he personally wrote the first draft of the infamous speech that Secretary of State Colin Powell delivered to the United Nations, according to Powell’s former aide Lawrence Wilkerson.

Moreover, Hannah was a top source for false pre-war intelligence from Iraqi exiles that was “stovepiped” past the intelligence agencies and sent directly to the White House:

For months, Cheney’s office has denied that the veep bypassed U.S. intelligence agencies to get intel reports from [Ahmad Chalabi’s Iraqi National Congress]. But a June 2002 memo written by INC lobbyist Entifadh Qunbar to a U.S. Senate committee lists John Hannah, a senior national-security aide on Cheney’s staff, as one of two “U.S. governmental recipients” for reports generated by an intelligence program being run by the INC and which was then being funded by the State Department. Under the program, “defectors, reports and raw intelligence are cultivated and analyzed”; the info was then reported to, among others, “appropriate governmental, non-governmental and international agencies.” The memo not only describes Cheney aide Hannah as a “principal point of contact” for the program, it even provides his direct White House telephone number.

John Hannah’s comments about Iran should be taken seriously. He knows how to mislead a nation into war.

Digg It!

Iran on Monday rejected U.S. accusations that the highest levels of Iranian leadership have armed Shiite militants in Iraq with armor-piercing roadside bombs, a day after U.S. military officials in Baghdad said they had traced the weapons to Tehran. “Such accusations cannot be relied upon or be presented as evidence. The United States has a long history in fabricating evidence. Such charges are unacceptable,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini told reporters.

Instead of our government spending more money on another invasion/war, we should look towards more important issues such as global poverty in order to combat the real problems at the source. According to the Borgen Project, it costs $19 billion a year to combat real poverty. We should let our representatives know that we would like to see a change in the direction of our foreign affairs.

So what you’re telling me is that we’re supposed to take the word of an anonymous ambassador relating what he supposedly heard John Hannah say, with an out of context quote.

Again, you guys are complete suckers for the media. They string you along so easily it’s like watching someone steal candy from a baby. No shit 2007 is “the year of Iran”. Does that mean the US plans on attacking them? Any one could have said this is “the year of Iran”.

Get back to me when (1) it isn’t some Nancy anonymous source claiming shit and (2) when you have an actual full quote demonstrating what is being claimed without being taken out of context.

Yeah, the “conservative” media in action again, I see. LOL.

  26. Bruce Gorton Says:

Okay, here is a liberal view:

1: Is Iran sponsoring anti-American terrorism?

Yes. It has been since before the Iranian hostage crisis.

2: Is Iran going after nuclear weapons?

Yes. Come on, they are on a whole sea of oil there, they want nuclear power, you do the math.

3: Is Iran supplying insurgents with weapons?

Obviously. Whether it is doing it officially or not is another matter.

    4: Does this justify war?

    No. Taken from the top:

1: It has been doing this for years, suddenly taking offense now is a bit late.

2: It is going after nuclear weapons because GW Bush, just prior to invading and overthrowing the government of Iraq, named it on his top three places he would like to invade. Further, Dubya, rejected an Iranian treaty whereby Iran recognised the state or Israel in 2003. Further, Bush wasn’t exactly taking yes for an answer from Iraq. Right now, going after nuclear weapons is not only morally justified from Iran’s point of view, it would have to be stupid not to.

3: If it is officially, the fact is that it is no different to what America did to Iran and Iraq under Reagan. If it is doing it unofficially, the fact is that it is no different to what countless Americans did to ENGLAND with the IRA.

    Now for the other reasons:

America is already engaged in two wars, neither of which look like winning propositions. Afghanistan, has never been an easy country to conquor, and Iraq is just getting started. Further, America is short on troops. (Long on technology but that comes later.)

A simple bombing campaign with conventional bombs will mean Iran declaring war on America, a war which will see the whole of the Middle East joining the side most likely to win, and in a conventional war that side is Iran.

A nuclear bombing campaign will mean WWIII, with China and America on opposing sides. Here is a little secret: China is your major fiscal backer. You piss China off, it calls your loans. With the rest of the world boycotting America, due to atomic war being the last great horror, your economy is going to go to shit.

Thus a conventional bombing campaign coupled with a land invasion is the only likely possibility - but you don’t have the troops to pull it off.

In other words, there is no win scenerio in Iran.

Maybe we should call in our Scocial Security loans to stop it?

Clearly there was a conspiracy between Libby and Cheney. Conspiracy is a legal term. Can we all be adults and discuss this and other related conspiracies without being accused of being “Conspiracy Theorists?”

Having a theory about a conspiracy was a prerequisite for Fitzgerald’s investigators. It’s time to praise those who are able to think outside the box and comprehend the means, motive and opportunity that leads to these types of Conspiracies.

It’s time to raise the level of discourse where the term “Conspiracy” is concerned:

    http://www.globalsecurity.org/ intell/ library/ reports/ 2005/ franklin_indictment_04aug2005.htm

We’ve all been conditioned to snicker and ridicule when non-professionals offer theories about conspiracies. It’s time to talk about all of these theories and unravel the whole thing.

Like my Air America friends say, if winning in the middle east is priority number one, then let’s ask the American people to sacrifice more than their “peace of mind” and bring back the draft, put our military in overdrive and get the job done. I mean if it’s a question of national survival, what other option do we have?

But since they refuse this strategy, it’s obvious that “winning” isn’t their objective, but stealing oil is. Our leaders would never admit to attacking a nation just for their natural resources. So the instead piddle around without any clear objectives, squandering any credibility we had in the World regarding our Military, and they wait, for a reason to further destabilize the region and create a “cause” for attacking another nation.

The Free World v. Radical Islam is a cover to their REAL objective: OIL.

  41. Bruce Gorton Says:

    criticalthinker

    Lets put it this way:

When Japan called its loans, America had other backers who were in a position to help America out.

When China calls in its loans, well, there was a reason why America was going to a state whose political system is idealogically opposed to its own, whose allies have a long history of hating America, whose civil rights record makes Saddam look lik a puppy, for money.

It is not so much that China, with the largest potential Army in the world, nuclear weapons of its own, and a fair stock of old alliances, is a military threat. It is that America, while engaged in two wars has already doubled its debt. China wouldn’t have to be overly heavy, all it would need to do is stop lending America money.

America could cope with social security, the bulk of that figure is in fact pure BS bred by IFRS being silly, what is can’t cope with is the expense of facing another war. Its already groaning under the strain of the current one.

One needs to ask whether Cheney is mad enough to want to “radicalize 70 million Irnians.” Bush understands that would be the effect of bombing Iran. Cheney is smarter than Bush; so he must also. What do they personally expect to gain?

  59. Bruce Gorton Says:

The answers to all of these questions and many more are available in the best-selling book of ALL TIME!

    The Bible.

As self help books go, the writing is stale, the story has holes big enough to drive trucks through (For example, before the flood mankind was supposed to be vegan, so why did Abel offer God burnt meat?) the morality conveyed is questionable (Killing priests is okay, provided they aren’t yours) the fig-hate I just never could get, and the basic premise laughable.

Further, I could also go into how its adherents seem to have avoided ever reading the book (Particularly Mathew 7 when Jesus goes into some depth on how to behave) how the book itself is all about god’s revalations to guys who spent a lot of time in the desert with inadequate rations and no hats, and how as a moral guide, I tend to shy away from anything that proposes you cut your own limbs off.

And this isn’t even touching on how the timeline is demonstrably wrong, several events recorded as fact never happened (The sun standing still, would have been more widely recorded then in one small, localised battle, for example) and how the Bible, in all its talk of killing sorcerers and witches, is really anti-anything approaching secular learning.

They will begin to be held accountable, if and only when, Cheney and Bush are impeached, convicted, investigated and prosecuted for war crimes. Those working within the administration can be fired, investigated by a REAL Justice Department, and then prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, including for war crimes. Those who have left the administration, like Yoo and Feith can also be investigated and tried.

As far as I am concerned, they should ALL be sent to the Hague.

Think about it, “head of Cheney’s National Security Staff”. What the fluck is that ? Does this monster of mankind have his own war room too ? What the hell is going on ? Oh, I see… he is the bad cop. Bush is the good cop. Then we have the good cops and the bad cops in Iran, too. Both sides ratchet up oil prices higher and higher, so Cheney (need a better name), Chimpy (love that name), the Arabs can get filthy rich while Al Queda (oil financed) smuggle in explosives to blow the shit out of our poor kids in Iraq. A statement Cheney will never utter: “I would like to see the price of oil come down, as it would defuse the situation in the middle east and prevent the spread of weaponry in the region”. The man will never ever say anything about the real dynamics of oil. Because he takes pig baths in the stuff, he will never admit that it has been, is now and always will be the root of all the trouble over there. Without oil, they would be raising goats in the desert again and that is our only long term national defense people policy people. But it will never happen. We are very near the end. You’ll likely see oil spike to 110 (all good for the Russians, the greedy f#cking Arab enemies, and the Iranians and the Houstonians) this year, as this all plays out (in Cheney’s bank account). Never before have we been bleeding out both sides of a conflict. At the very least in Nam we were sucking dry the Chinese and the Russians. Here, its a perpetual slow ride down the toilet. We are funding the slaughter of our own kids over there. Its a f@cking mad house! One last comment: Rice is the most useless piece of shit that ever set foot in the beltway. The women who, after 9/11, lied to everyone when she said “We had no indication of any such plot ever concieved by any terror group” has continued to lie and now has zero power. What a waste. Ok, all done. No not exactly…. can someone please tell me why we have not sailed a fleet of battleships into the Indian Ocean, let everyone on the planet know that one of them is filled with $3 billion of gold bullion, and tell them it is theirs if they bring the head of Bin Laden to the closest dock. No. Instead we have spent (no, borrowed) $400 billion that has done nothing except for toppling the Taliban provided the Defense Industry with a major boon. We are going to have to explain that to our children (when the country turns to shit) a little better so start thinking about it.

We are the ones that can tell the politicians how to work, we have to put pressure on them as a Nation to stop any armed conflict and change our foreign policy.

Not this time. Do not worry,I think Iran already has the bomb , in 1990 all the former Soviet Union states were offering it in the market. But I do not think the US has the power to do anything about it. Iran is not Iraq and the US knows it. Oil prices will skyrocket and Israel will be attacked by Hizbulah which showed its teeth in the recent war in Lebanon, they still have not used some heavy duty weaponry.

Pure BS and I really love the “Iranian mortars” with markings in English and Western style dates. (Iranian ordinance is marked in Arabic and dated with the Muslim calendar folks). Putin has made it clear that an attack on Iran will be answered by a Russian counter-strike. The Bush worshiping 20% are not going to kick back and watch this war on CNN with a beer. People on US soil will be killed. Bush and Cheney know this and they don’t care - they WANT escalation and WW3. Go read the PNAC and other neocon think tank docs.

  89. Roven Says:

No one here is addressing the fundamental problem of Iran.

Yes, we all agree: an attack on Iran would be disastrous, destabilising, wrong and carry a cost which America cannot afford.

But nor can the world afford a nuclear Iran.

Contrary to many voices here: this is not another India, Israel or Pakistan. This really is a state that sponsors terrorism, practices profoundly dispicable respect for human rights and dreams of creating a regional empire through military force. (An eventuality that is also ‘disastrous, destabilising, wrong and carries a cost which America cannot afford’.)

The conundrum here (which I detect a strong reluctance to address) is that inaction is as almost as dangerous as action.

Before you flame me, I am in no way advocating war.

But it must be noted that diplomatic solutions to this crisis are impossible for two reasons:

    1) The Iranian leader is fixed on his goal and the fruits of its success far outweigh the costs of potential sanctions.

    2) Much of the world community has a vested (and more powerful) interest in continued flow of Iranian oil and hence they are motivated not out of moral and security imperatives, but out of their own economic self interests.

Excerpts from internal EU documents show a strongly entrenched pessimism and sense of futility in efforts to slow Iran’s development of nuclear weapons capabilities (see: http://www.ft.com/ cms/ s/ 9222452a-bb66-11db-afe4-0000779e2340.html )

To be frank: this is pathetic.

Diplomatic pressures have actually yet to be applied.

What is required here is a poison pill: A unanimous conditional agreement signed in advance of “what would happen” if Iran develops weapons. Such an agreement safely protects all those who believe that Iran’s prgram may be peaceful, by conditionally bringing the full force of sanctions to bear *only in the event of full transgression*.

No nation has yet suggested a “what if” document. All current diplomatic strategies are based around the premise of deterrance — a policy that cannot possibly work, and only reinforces the Iranian belief (which is not incorrect) that the West is weak and easily manipulated.

Currently we have a situation in which weak, barely-agreed-upon diplomatic strategies are failing. What is needed here is diplomats that are capable. So far all we’ve seen is ineptitude.

If Iran wins this contest (the creation of nuclear weapons) it will only be because the West has failed to create sound diplomatic policy. Not because of a lunatic despot. We can be sure of seeing many more of those in the future.

With both the Bush and Olmert administrations involved in investigations, corruption scandals and incompetence charges, an attack agaisnt Iran would be a good way for these two criminals to divert attention away from their crimes against humanity.
Both are nothing more than thieves posing as statesmen; instead of sticking a pistol in your face and demanding money, they thearten nations with F-16’s and nuclear weapons.

I know that ‘think progress’ attracts the uneducated, liberal moron who is about as informed about world events as my dog, but what the hell?
Someone says they heard someone else say something and you idiots report it as truth.
    Odd.
Then you blame the ‘conservative media machine’, which has long been the liberal media machine for putting it all into motion.
Here’s the deal, liberal brain deads - Iran has been meddling in the affairs of virtually every country in the world. In Iraq, they arm and train militant insurgents and send their own military advisers and undercover operatives to incite violence against US forces, shia’s, shiites, innocents, etc. In Lebanon, they promote unrest and support hezbollah with rockets, grenades, and rifles. When it comes to the US, Iran taunts and taunts and does what it can to show up the US and the UK. Iran’s President is a holocaust denier and an anti-semite. His own people don’t like him because he ran on a platform of inclusion, transparency in government, and financial reform and has pulled a 180 while bringing more problems to the country by constantly pissing off the rest of the world.
And you liberals who have the nerve to call yourself patriotic americans while making personal attacks on the administration without presenting a single rational, reasonable, viable solution just LOVE to side with people who would happily dispatch you from this world for the crime of being an American.
    Shame on you.
    FDR once said:
“This nation has placed its destiny in the hands, heads and
hearts of its millions of free men and women, and its faith
in freedom under the guidance of God. Freedom means the
supremacy of human rights everywhere. Our support goes to
those who struggle to gain those rights and keep them. Our
strength is our unity of purpose.

To that high concept there can be no end save victory.”

So why is it that no democrat that opposes the war and wants us to appease Iran can’t understand that simple concept?
Shame on those of you too ignorant and foolish to see the truth.
Double shame on those who blame Israel, AIPac and the Jews in general for the transgressions of fundamental islam.
Go read about what REALLY started the crusades and then talk to me about how wrong we are and how right fundamentalist islam is.
It turns out, Islamic hoardes were roaming nations, forcing people to convert to Islam by the sword or die.
Christians didn’t appreciate this and decided to stand up and fight for their freedom to worship as they chose.
Fundamentalists want you to forget this.
But what is the difference between that and Iran threatening the world with Nuclear weapons while working diligently to destabilize Iraq?

  108. el kabong Says:

jeff, it is YOU who can’t see what is in front of your eyes. The US has engaged in terrorism for decades, politically, economically and militarily. Own up to that, will you? Once you appreciate that, you may have a clue as to why countries like Iran want nukes. They are surrounded by US militaries and they are being threatened by the US president.

Don’t even start with your supporting religious causes. More people have died on this planet in the name of God than can all other reasons combined.

There is no victory to be had.

  109. MadMonk Says:

Jeff, I miss the FDR Democrats. That was when a Dem had a spine. But, sadly those days are long gone; and now we are left with the self-loathing, backbiting, cowards we have today. I imagine that they will only see the error of their ways when more of our cities are destroyed by bombs and American women are forced to wear Burkas upon fear of brutal punishment.

  110. Pete Eriksen Says:

Yes, we are going in. It’s all about Israel, and it’s all about destabilizing and fragmenting her potential enemies in the region, and this has been the plan for 25 years.
“The idea that all the Arab states should be broken down, by Israel, into small units, occurs again and again in Israeli strategic thinking. For example, Ze’ev Schiff, the military correspondent of Ha’aretz (and probably the most knowledgeable in Israel, on this topic) writes about the “best” that can happen for Israeli interests in Iraq: “The dissolution of Iraq into a Shi’ite state, a Sunni state and the separation of the Kurdish part” (Ha’aretz 6/2/1982).”

Well, Iraq is done, and Iran is next. The only problem is that the loyalty of the natives in the colonies to the Israeli motherland is flagging. There is just too much public-opinion resistance now to Bush just going in to Iran like we went into Iraq. Something is needed to change public opinion. Either there will be a false-flag op to make it look like Iran started it and we are just retaliating, or Israel will nuke ‘em first and then Bush will be relieved of the responsibility of having initiated it, and he will simply have to rationalize taking sides in the then already-existing dispute.
Either way, we are are going in!
Of course, the whole world will polarize around it. Russia will back Iran, and China will back Russia - remember China has big olil contracts with Iran too. And the U.S. will back Israel or conversely. An so on. So it will lead to WWIII, but what the heck! Maybe it will cause Bush’s Messiah to finally come. Look on the bright side!

  112. DoctorD Says:

What will happen if the US Nukes Iran? The US will become the new “Axis of Evil”.

Bush desperately wants to start a war with Iran as a last gasp effort to salvage something beyond ignominious defeat for his “Legacy”. All of the scenarios spelled out in the War Games the Joint Chiefs did in the last five years have said that starting a war with Iran will inevitably lead to a nuclear first strike against Iran’s Natanz and Esfahan facilities.

The War Games Scenario for the Iran War goes like this:
    1. The US or Israel [with US cooperation] prepares to bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities at Natanz and Esfahan. A few Generals and Admirals resign but the attack happens anyway. The attack causes major surface damage but does not penetrate through the layers of reinforced concrete and steel to the level of the Centrifuges and Uranium processing facilities. The attack is a failure but it starts a US/Israeli war with Iran.
    2. Iran announces it is withdrawing from the Non-Proliferation Treaty. Iran attacks any oil tankers passing through the Straights of Hormuz and the US Aircraft Carriers and their escorts in the gulf using swarming speedboats, torpedoes and silkworm cruise missiles and sinks at least 1 carrier and several other ships causing 2000-3000 US casualties.
    3. The US Air-force starts large scale bombing of Iran’s infrastructure.
    4. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard invades southern Iraq with 300,000-400,000 ground troops and cuts off all supplies to US forces in southern and western Iraq.
    5. The US bombs areas of southern Iraq where Iranian soldiers are blocking US supplies and the US bombing causes mass civilian casualties.
    6. The Iraqi Government orders the US to leave Iraq immediately or be attacked by the Iraqi Army. The Iraqi Shiite and Sunni Mullahs issue a Fatwa directing all Insurgents and Militias to attack US soldiers and not each other.
    7. US forces are besieged by 300,000 Iranians and 200,000 Iraqi Army, Insurgents and Militia soldiers. After 60 days of intense fighting and 10,000-20,000 US casualties, the US bases in Iraq run out of fuel, ammunition and food.
    8. The US troops in southern Iraq, western Iraq and Bagdad are forced to “Retreat Under Fire” to the Kurdish north leaving behind all of their heavy equipment.
    9. The Iranians seize the abandoned US weapons and bring in fuel and supplies and turn the weapons on the US.
    10. The US claimes the excuse of “Protecting US Troops” and uses tactical nuclear bombs to attack the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and Militia forces in southern Iraq and nuclear bunker buster bombs to destroy Natanz and Esfahan in Iran. There are 300,000 immediate civilian casualties caused by the blast and radiation and 750,000 cases of radiation poisoning in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Northern India.
    11. All Oil production in Iraq and Iran stops for 6-9 months [25% of world oil production]. All Middle-East Oil shipments through the Straights of Hormuz are stopped [20% of world oil production]. All middle-eastern countries together impose a total Oil Embargo on supplies to the US and Israel. Venezuela, Bolivia and Argentina join in the Oil Embargo. Gasoline and Heating Fuel-oil prices rise to $10.00 per gallon, Natural Gas prices rise to $5.00 per CCF and gasoline rationing is imposed. Energy intensive industries shut down. Frequent major blackouts occur crippling the server farms that power the Internet. The US economy suffers a meltdown.
    12. Iran abrogates the Non-Proliferation Treaty and reprocesses Plutonium from their research reactors to produce 1-2 nuclear bombs which are used to destroy Tel Aviv. Israel responds with their own nuclear bombs destroying Tehran.
    13. A general war of all Islam vs. the US and Israel ensues. All US bases in the middle-east are attacked causing 50,000-75,000 US casualties before the US forces can escape. Israel is invaded from all sides by Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iran, Lebanon and the Palestinian Territories. The US and Israel are branded by the world as the “Axis of Evil”.

Imagine a world where the US is reviled by every other nation for the unforgivable damage we have done to innocent civilians. Where the US is under a Permanent Oil Embargo by all OPEC member states. Where Canada, Mexico and South America join Europe and Asia to ban all trade with the US and evict all US Military bases from their soil. Where all US citizens with any connection to the Bush Administration are under indictment by The Hague and are put on a No-Fly List banning them from from travel outside the US. Where all US multi-national corporations are boycotted or banned by the rest of the world or are forced to split and change their names to avoid anti-US sentiment.

All this and more can happen if Bush decides to Nuke Iran.

Bush is the Decider. He makes the Decisions and the rest of us have to live with the consequences. Bush’s Decisions about the Middle-East have been uniformly bad. Some of them have been worse than bad; they have crossed the line into the zone of Criminal Negligence and Suicidal Stupidity.

The worst Decision Bush has made in his two terms as President has been to insist that the use of Nuclear Bunker Buster bombs remain in the Pentagon’s planning for dealing with Iran.

Iran may be telling the truth or Iran may be lying when they say that they are only trying to enrich Uranium for nuclear power. If Iran is telling the truth and their goal is just nuclear power, then using a Nuke against Iran will guarantee that Iran will go for The Bomb in self defense. If Iran is lying then using a Nuke against Iran will only delay Iran getting The Bomb by one or two years and will guarantee that they will attempt to use it against the US or Israel.

The US B61-11 Nuclear Bunker Buster bomb is only able to penetrate hard rock to a depth of 10-20 feet before it detonates. At 20ft penetration and maximum yield, the B61-11 can only destroy a facility that is buried less than 600ft below ground. Blast forces can be blocked by simple inexpensive materials like a 100ft thick layer of gravel or bags of sand or granulated salt. The limitations of the B61-11 have been known for years and any Iranian weapons facility will have been built with those limits in mind.

If Iran is actually trying to build a Nuclear Bomb, they will probably have done what Iraq and Pakistan did by building a secret second facility buried deep under ground under the publicly visible facilities at Natanz and Esfahan.

The Natanz facility in Iran is known to have a double roof of thick reinforced concrete with 50-75ft of gravel between the concrete layers. The roof is sufficient to protect against any non-nuclear bunker buster (even the US air forces MOAB bomb). Natanz could probably also survive a low yield Nuclear Bunker Buster bomb.

If the US actually used the B61-11 bomb in Iran against the Natanz or Esfahan facilities more than 500,000 civilian deaths could be expected in iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.
