Judaism has no problem with Evolution.

For what it’s worth, evolution is not in opposition to Christianity.

Comment by Admin — February 12, 2007 @ 7:46 pm

What Admin says is quite true. Evolution is only a threat to those who insist on biblical literalism (or literalism in whatever they consider holy text). These people are making a false idol out of their scripture (in the case of former Alabama Judge Moore, literally a graven one!).

Judaism does not require literalism. When I was growing up most synagogues were using a version of the Pentateuch (the five books of Moses) published by the Soncino Press. It included commentaries by a former Chief Rabbi of the British Empire (from around the 1930’s). In it (page 194 of the second edition) he points out that the greatest Jewish commentator of all time (Rashi) taught that scripture was not supposed to give a strict chronology of creation, and that Maimonides taught that the account is not meant to be literal.

The Chief Rabbi also makes the following point: imagine if Genesis Chapter 1 had contained a scientifically accurate account of the creation:

Monera begat Amoeba, Amoeba begat Synamoebae, Synamoebae begat Ciliated Larva, . . . Primary Mammals begat Pouched Animals, Pouched Animals begat Semi-Apes, Semi-Apes begat Tailed Apes, Tailed Apes begat Man-like Apes, Man-like Apes begat Ape-like Men, Ape-like Men begat Men.

Would such an account have even been understood, much less inspiring? Galileo said it best, the bible exists to explain how to go to heaven, not how the heavens go (or were made). For that question we must turn to the observable facts, analyzed by reason. In short, for that we need science (knowledge not faith).

other times McCain clearly flip flopped but this time it is not so clear he said that he thought that creation should be taught in school but not in science class what is wrong with that but really have you ever seen or heard of a strange experiance with ghosts or something else like two people picking up a person with two fingures if there is bad there is good no matter how the story is told

FINALLY someone on this page who actually bothered to READ what the speech and event are all about - a keynote at The World Affair's Council event.

Thanks Greg!

As for the rest of the foam-at-the mouth crowd here, try to read first and write second.

McCain isn't speaking at a creationist event, but on America's role in the world at a luncheon presented by The World Affairs Council and CityClub of Seattle.

The Discovery Institute is one of many "co-presenters" of the event, on the bottom of the event's information page, below the main sponsors logos.

It's hardly surprising that they would puff themselves up to impress their credulous readers who likely won't be anywhere near Seattle, with the seventy five dollar ticket. I would be surprised if McCain even knows of the DI's participation.

This should be interesting. Im looking forward to see what he says at The Discovery Institute.

[...] I take the unmaking of John McCain personally. Another lifetime ago, when he was running against Gov. G.W. Bush, I registered Republican to vote for McCain in the California presidential primary. He struck me as a principled problem solver. A man who might bring about a post-partisan revolution in good government and accountability. So it’s truly disheartening to watch McCain jettison the principled independence that used to make him a transcendent figure. Jerry Fallwell, formerly an “agent of intollerance” in McCain’s estimation is now a chum, who no doubt smiled when McCain decided to deliver the keynote address at an creationist convention.
What a sad bunch of folks to be so ignorantly bigoted as to believe that Darwin's theory actually proves anything. As one of any intelligence should obviously see, one has NEVER created ANYTHING through an evolutionary process. If anything object whether material or animated comes to being it is done so by a creator, from conception to design to creation. The question that comes to mind, “Are the Darwinists willing to change their lifestyle without God to accept the lifestyle of living for the Creator?” As one can well see, they are not willing to change, therefore, creating an out for themselves. In the final analysis, we will all find out the truth, whether we like it or now.

I don't like McCain at all.

However this article is total trash. McCain is giving a talk at a luncheon on international issues, not creationism. DI is a minor co-sponsor of the event.

GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT.

I can believe from the comments on this article that people did come from monkeys. Just because government says something isn't true......that obviously means it definitely is. What is so bad about actually teaching creationism since our freakin country was founded on those ideals. Only up till this century did this new way of thinking happen. Get your facts straight them come back to talk.
