Pace: No Evidence Tying Iranian Government To Smuggled Explosives

paceside.jpgAt Sunday’s briefing in Baghdad, U.S. officials attempted to tie the Iranian government to attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq, claiming that “Iran’s export of the bombs to Iraqi Shiite militias was a deliberate strategy of the regime.”

But today, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Peter Pace disavowed this claim. He told reporters he has no evidence of any links between the explosives killing Americans and top Iranian officials:

We know that the explosively formed projectiles are manufactured in Iran. What I would not say is that the Iranian government, per se [specifically], knows about this,” he said. “It is clear that Iranians are involved, and it’s clear that materials from Iran are involved, but I would not say by what I know that the Iranian government clearly knows or is complicit.

Pace isn’t the only one concerned about the intelligence presented at Sunday’s briefing:

Indeed, while the specific intelligence on the explosive formed projectiles is no longer disputed in the intelligence community, the CIA is questioning whether their export from Iran represents a strategy of the regime or the rogue actions of one of its security services, known as the Quds Force. [New York Sun, 2/12/07]

The officials offered no evidence to substantiate allegations that the “highest levels” of the Iranian government had sanctioned support for attacks against U.S. troops. [Washington Post, 2/12/07]

If these “anonymous Pentagon officials” have proof that the Iranian gov’t is involved, they should tell us what it is; otherwise they’re just giving Ahmadinijad (sp) more ammo against us.

  4. TripMaster Monkey says:

Interesting, how Pace’s statement frames the question.

The question is no longer, ‘is there Iranian involvement in Iraq?’.

The question now is, ‘is the Iranian involvement in Iraq a strategy of the regime or the rogue actions of one of its security services?’.

Interesting choice…either the regime proper, or a rogue security service. There are many other alternatives that this narrowly framed question fails to address…and that’s by design.

The drums of war just keep on beating. Don’t get distracted just because they momentarily change their rhythm.

It is obvious why the talk is heating up … it is because Cheney wants to have Bush attack Iran before he gets asked to resign because of the Plame matter (which is finding out that everything in this government is being run by the vice president’s office instead of Bush’s office). Look Bush, you have had no control — you are just the cheerleader-in-fact. And once you realize that, you should ask Cheney to resign. Ha! Ha! How likely is that to happen? Pace is not talking war, his buddy Rummy is out of office and Pace wishes he were, too.

This statement on the Iranian-supplied weapons makes me believe that General Pace is an example of an honest, forthright government official relating FACTS not fiction. His recent response to one of the congressional committees regarding the current Iraq War debate which is going on in this country was also precise (and to paraphrase) when he said that the troops on the ground in Iraq will not feel that this country is not supporting them by having this debate — these debates happen in democracies! Well Done General!

  23. Mark says:

#6 regardless of what you say we need to talk/negotiate/use diplomacy first. Unfortunately this adminsitration and their supporters view diplomacy as a weakness. This administration and their minions view negotiation as a process that begins with the other side in the negotiation starting with your desired goals and then working from there. Here’s some news for you…we were able to avoid war with Russia and China for 50 years by talking. Sometimes acrimoniously, but we talked. Here’s some more news negotiation is something that involves give and take hopefully with and end result pleasing to both sides. Negotiation is not a take it or leave it process. Those who advocate the administrations approach to Iran should note that it is eerily similar to their approach to Iraq and that it is decidedly un-American in it’s nature.

Well none other than right wing has been guitarist Ted Nugent who admitted in an interview with the Detroit Free Press (July 15, 1990) to urinating and defecating in his pants to avoid serving his country during the Vietnam war. Like the army needs Humvees Nugent is gonna need an extra supply of jockeys.

Are you all so ignorant. Blindly accepting anything that anyone says.
The quote from Pace was not TODAY as stated. It is a quote from March 14 2006. When thgey quoted the Sun and Washington Post it is date today but it’s funny how this got left out for Paces quote.
Carter could have stopped this years ago. Its about time that we take a stand.

    Armitage was the leak! (Plame)
For all of you who want to talk with Iran sure lets do it just like we did with Saddam who defied 17 resolutions. Here’s a good book to read “The Evil Craddeling” if you want to know about terrorists, they don’t think, they just hate.
Have any of you ever heard of ferel children? Well I put them (terrorist’s) on a scale a little bit higher than that, only because they can talk.
When you take someone at a very early age and the only thing they are taught is to hate and to kill and to lie there isn’t hope for them to be able to negotiate in a resonable manner. Firstly they don’t know what negotiate or reasonable means. Secondly they don’t care.
Awww the poor terrorists, they just want to be left alone. Yeh, right. They have a plan and have been putting it into place here for years. Thank you Lyndon Johnson I believe you helped to give them the idea when you opened the flood gates. All immigrants welcome to come and establish your own little mini country here.
, then let them come and buy a business and be tax exempt for 7 years (as a naturalized citizen I am not allowed) then let them pass it on to the next relative etc etc. See how it goes. Foot well in the door in every city in the country and sending money back home to promote their cause. I’m not saying every immigrant but a whole lot of them. Tell me I can’t have MY say about being there. Saddam had billions of American dollars, cash money. Iran is doing everything they can t undermine our cause to prove what cowards we are.Turn tail and run you infidels, let the world see the dog you are! With everyone backing out on what they said when we went to war with Iraq how could we take a stand against Iran? That is what he is thinking and so many of you are proving him right. Ummmmmmmmmm
Let’s see, how many of you are learning to speak arabic?
My father was first generation here (arabic). He and his 3 brothers all served in seperate branches of this great nations military during WW11. Their father had a patch in the window of his home representing them all and flew the flag with pride. There were also 7 girls. My grandfather said we are American’s we speak english.None of my siblings or cousins learned to speak arabic.
I am not a war monger, I hate war. I disiplined my children and I didn’t like doing that either but I knew in order for them to grow up and to be a contributing factor in society I had to do it. There is a time for war and after ignoring the U.N. 17 times, with or w/o WMD’s it was time to go. A child needs to know there are consequences. Iran(the child) is taking full advantage of the situation because of the Americans who are afraid to defend her.
You people who are so full of hate and spewing it wouldn’t have the platform to do it on. Go visit Iaq or Argentina. Go to China, Cambodia or India. Go to Europe even, because this is still the best country in the world. I have been to some of these places and other’s I haven’t listed so I do know who has the best way of life. Bring the rest of the world here or just forget that, go to a shelter and start taking people into your homes to live. Same idea, smaller scale. How good would your way of life be then? Matters doens’t it when it’s in your own home, why not your country?
Other nations say horrible things about us because they are envious, it’s always like that for the people at the top. It’s the equivalent of wanting to be like the Jonses. People jealous of those who have more than them, wanting to take what others have and have it redistributed, but then one day you strike it rich and whoa….you think “who are you to tell me what to do with what is mine” This hypocisy makes me ill.
The terrorists of the mid east would love to rule the world. What don’t you get??

    God Bless America

Has everybody forgotten that it was Saudi Arabians who attacked New York City on September 11th, 2001? And has everyone missed the item about the five Israeli moving van workers who werre stopped after witnesses saw them celebrating the burning twin towers on that day? They were held for more than a month an released only under intense pressure from Israel. Apparently they had been surveilling the hi-jackers and the question arises, why didn’t they alert American authorities to the activities of the SAUDI ARABIANS they were shadowing?

Iran is a RED HERRING, a means by which we can have eternal profit-making warfare for the very rich.

    Iran the child

…? You actually refer to Iran as a child?!

The Iranians have been around for a very long time, and it was Great King Darius I , the Persian/Iranian king, who rebuilt the Jewish Temple and was supporting the reconstruction of the Jewish State. That was in about 500 B.C. some two-thousand-two-hundred years before Uncle Sam was born.

BROWNEYES I CAN’T BELIEVE WHAT I AM READING!

Browneyes, you say other nations are envious of us which explains why they verbally attack us?!? That people always feel that way about others who they are jealous of, “it’s always like that for the people at the top”

Unless I am mistaken the United States has consistently ranked near or below the top ten in both public and private national rankings of economic and quality of life standards for YEARS now!
For your information Norway is currently ranked the world’s best place to live and has consistently been so for some six years in a row. In 2002 the U.S. ranked sixth on the UN list. Grant Thornton ranks the optimism rating of the United States VERY LOW as compared to their leaders, India and China!
It just might be possible that people are attacking the United States because we are behaving like Nazi Germany? Perhaps their attacks are justified?

Look at Iran on a map. Iraq to the west. Afghanistan to the east. If the US had Iranian troops fighting wars in Canada and Mexico, there would be lots of arms smuggling across our borders, regardless of the official position of the US government. What is surprising is how little is occuring.
