Oddly enough, Charlie Norwood was a boyhood friend of mine, a big pal and neighbor, in fact. We used to chase snakes in the swamp near where we lived. I haven’t been in touch with him for 50 years, but I do know that he was one of many Republicans screwed by President George W. “W” Bush.

Charlie was a dentist and he was a strong proponent of a patient’s bill of rights. He and John Dingell put one together. First, the pundits just loved saying Dingell Norwood Bill with a smirk. But the worst thing that happened was that the President asked him to withdraw his bill of rights in favor of a presidential one. Charlie complied, and that’s the last we heard of any stinking patient bill of rights.

  16. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

I don’t think it is morally or practically right to willingly crawl into the gutter just because that’s where the opposing political party members reside. Now, if we are dragged there directly, such as by the “embolden the enemies” rhetoric, then OK we should hit hard, often, and below the belt if necessary. But if we don’t like preemptive war as a national tactic, why should we engage in preemptive nastiness. Insulting a dead man who can do nothing more to harm our country is in poor taste.

I’m sure there were a lot of people at Norwood’s funeral–as was said at Harry Cohn and Louis B. Mayer’s funerals as well, “Well, it only proves what they always say–give the people what they want, and they’ll come out for it!” One less repugnant-repub out there–I may sound cruel, but that’s the way life is! Norwood was a rabid right-wing repugnant-repub who as a youth, killed his friend playing “quick draw”–he must have though he was “Quick-Draw McGraw”! That sobered his gunplay though he was a lifelong hunter like Torticola Cheney–stange how these repugnant-repubs and right-wing crackers love to shoot and KILL LIVING THINGS for sport and not only to survive by hunting for food! He had a lung transplant due to his service in Vietnam, one good thing he did for his country, in addition to filling the void in peoples’ teeth by his practice as a dentist–but he was a nasty repugnant-repub who loved to throw his weight and lord it over the house when the repugnant-repubs controlled the house, nastily shutting off debate and doing outrageous things like helping a constituent being a stuffed POLAR BEAR, an endangered species, FOR CHRISSAKES, through the customs…the polar bears and hunted species had their last laugh, as do I and other right-minded Americans, that Norwood is now in a new line of business–PUSHING UP DAISIES and WORM-FARMING!
The worms crawl in, The worms crawl out,
The worms play Pinochle on Norwood’s snout!

I tought death, for the fundies, is supposed to be a joyous moment when man joins his ‘maker’ in a paradise of perfection…

Shouldn’t we then be happy for Norwood that his suffering is over?

My father died from cancer. It’s a terrible way to go.

Peace to his family at this time.

  30. Father O'KC says:

As a real progressive, one with genuine humanist values, I am disgusted by Liberal in NM, Spudge Boy, Mike Hunt, and others. The reason we humanists are better than neo-con Repubs is because we actually care about people, no matter how misguided their politics. Norwood had a mom, a wife, and kids who are all now deprived of his company. For a so-called progressive to take glee from the death of another is, as Daffy Duck says, dethpicable. And I would shower you hypocrites with Daffy’s slobber if I had the bandwidth. Liberal in NM, this genuine progressive humanist in NM is calling in your cred. Play nice or go away.

  31. Nicho (the other one) says:

My fellow liberals, please do not go down the “see ya wouldn’t want to be ya” path on this. That’s the conservative approach and you’re only stooping to their level in a cheap act of pithy retribution. As liberals we should be above that.

He didn’t go to prison, he died. His game is over. The good people of his district will have to vote a replacement and, considering his margin of victory in 2006, will probably elect another Republican. It would be great to gain another seat but it won’t make that much of a difference if we did.

For the moment, be good people and swallow that need to rub in the loss of a life to someone else for something like politics. It’s the snarling republicans that do this kind of crap.

  34. Your Conscience says:

Good riddance this former Klansman and murderer ( Norwood attended public schools before going off to boarding school at Baylor School, a military academy in Chattanooga, Tenn. It was there that Norwood shot and killed a close friend) can rot in hell with the other traitor fake Americans who voted FOR the Military Commisions Act removing Habeaus Corpus and approving torture.

    Bill: S 3930
    Vote description: Military Commissions Act
    Vote type: Yea-and-Nay (Help)
A standard vote that requires a simple majority for approval or passage of the legislation.
Result: Passed, 250-170, with 12 not voting.
    Date/time: September 29, 2006, 2:47 p.m.
    Republican majority opinion: Yes (Help)
The position of more than 50 percent of voting Republicans. “None” means an equal split between “Yes” and “No.”
    Democrat majority opinion: No (Help)
The position of more than 50 percent of voting Democrats. “None” means an equal split between “Yes” and “No.”
    Key Vote Analysis
This bill would outlaw certain actions during interrogations by U.S. personnel, including torture, rape, biological experimentation, and “mutilation or maiming,” but would leave it up to the president to define what interrogation techniques outside those barred by the Geneva Conventions is still permissible. It also would authorize the creation of military tribunals and legally immunize CIA officers who may have engaged in activity characterized as torture. The bill goes on to bar non-American citizens from protesting their imprisonment if the president designates them as “enemy combatants.”

  35. Father O'KC says:

Unbelievable, you call me sanctimonious, yet you give a pass to jerks who would celebrate the death of another? I haven’t checked Norwood’s voting record – I assume he was a party Republican, but he was also a human being, a father and grandfather, a veteran, and a medical professional. All of these make him worthy of more respect than a self-annointed liberal who rejoices at another’s suffering and calls it deserved. I think I will go away, for the same reason I’m not a neo-con. I don’t like to be judge by the company I keep.

  36. Father O'KC says:

of course that should read, “judged”…

  37. Jeremy Henderson says:

Ok, sadly I’m going to have to side with the “ethics police” here and say that applauding the death of another human being of cancer is a shitty way to act, for anyone. My great grandfather, who never smoked in his life, died of it, and it’s a horrible thing for anyone to suffer through. Taking any kind of joy from that kind of suffering is the exact opposite of the progressive values we profess to believe in.

And “But they did it first” is no excuse. Grow up.

  38. lipbalm says:

Were the republicans nice when Tim Johnson had bleeding on his brain that caused a stroke?

    Screw the republicans.

I will be nice to them when they stop trying to ruin my country.

Ahh the old “they do it to us, so it’s ok to do it to them” trick. Sounds alot like the Republitard’s justification for torture if you ask me.

Don’t sink to their level by using the same arguments they do.

  40. unbelievable says:

Unbelievable, you call me sanctimonious, yet you give a pass to jerks who would celebrate the death of another?

Judging others by your own moral compass is sanctimonious. So is calling them jerks.

The First Amendment affords us the right of free speech. As long as they haven’t harmed anyone (and I’m guessing his family members have better things to do with their time right now), it’s their right.

I haven’t checked Norwood’s voting record – I assume he was a party Republican, but he was also a human being, a father and grandfather, a veteran, and a medical professional.

As were all the people in Iraq who he’s supported the murder of…

The Bible says that the death of one who murders is good.

I’m an Atheist, personally. Not a big fan of hypocrisy.

All of these make him worthy of more respect than a self-annointed liberal who rejoices at another’s suffering and calls it deserved.

Nonsense. You think your way is the only way. You are wrong.

I think I will go away, for the same reason I’m not a neo-con.

    You’re NOT a progressive.

I agree with this 100%. I disagreed with Charles Norwood on nearly every issue, but I think it’s in poor taste to dance on his grave. I believe that progressives should lead the way, and part of that is knowing how to debate in a civil and respectful manner.

    Comment by unbelievable — February 13, 2007 @ 5:38 pm

YOU added the ‘prominent’ part to narrow my field. And to narrow it further, YOU, again, added the limit of ‘about Democrats’.

I was specifically thinking of the drooling jubilee by rightwingers when Saddam was hanged.

By comparison, Norwood is also a person who supported the murder of innocent Iraqis, therefore making it equally acceptable for someone who is against violent aggression to weigh the two in a similar fashion. I know you’ll protest. But you won’t have anything of substance upon which to do it.

    No.

It’s that kind of appeasement that makes one fat politician a subject of tearful news reports, and the deaths of thousands of brave young men and women unfit for reporting.

  64. Nicho (the other one) says:

DM, I’m not following your logic. By insulting a dead man and his family, that will repeal some kind of news blackout of the deaths of our soldiers? It would seem far more fitting that if everyone would be able to mourn any loss of life that it would, in turn, give reason to mourn every loss of life in war.

I just think that by celebrating the death of a person that 99% of the population of this thread more than likely didn’t know by name is a tad bit hypocritical to those who were offended when the right-wing reation Sen. Tim Johnson’s ailment. It’s a perfectly human thing to wish ill on your enemies but I think too many people are falling prey to labels here. Just because someone is Republican doesn’t necessarily mean they’re evil. That’s reactionary, not progressive thinking.

Besides, it’s the old axiom “if you can’t say something nice…”

  65. DM says:

I’m not celebrating his death, I’m appalled at the celebrity of his death.

And the old axiom “if you can’t say something nice” was built for people to endure each other in polite society. I don’t want to endure Republicans, I want have them punished for their war crimes.

  66. Nicho (the other one) says:

The celebrity of his death? I didn’t even hear about until I came here. An example of the celebrity of death would be Anna Nicole, not some frumpy congressman from Georgia.

I’m not suggesting that everyone shed tears because I know I’m not. I don’t know this man. I just know that a man died and people in his life will miss him. I know what that feels like; it sucks.

And if you don’t at the very least yearn for polite society than the problem for you isn’t just Republicans, my friend.
