In Heated Exchanges, Reporters Press Snow To Justify Iran Claims»

At today’s White House press briefing, Press Secretary Tony Snow faced intense questioning over administration claims that Iranians have smuggled weapons into Iraq with “the approval of senior Iranian officials.” Yesterday, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Peter Pace seemed to contradict this claim, saying that he has not seen evidence that the Iranian government “clearly knows or is complicit” in the weapons smuggling.

CNN’s Ed Henry pressed Snow: “When the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff seems to be saying something different than the White House, does that raise questions about how solid this evidence is?” But Snow insisted that the White House and Pace were “not on separate pages.”

Later, Henry accused Snow of repeatedly “changing what my question is.” Snow said, “No, no, I’m trying to clarify your question,” but Henry interrupted. “I don’t need it clarified. I’m trying to tell you — I know what my question is, and basically, [Pace is] saying that he doesn’t see evidence that the Iranian government is clearly behind it. That’s my — I’ve asked that three or four times, you haven’t answered that.”

Transcript:

HENRY: “…the Iranian government clearly knows or is complicit.” Are you saying that you, from this podium, know more than the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff?

SNOW: I am telling you what the intelligence indicates. And…

HENRY: So, was he not in the loop? I’m just trying to understand why there’s a contradiction, where the chairman of the Joint Chiefs –

SNOW: There’s not — Ed. Calm down. I know you’re excited. Your voice is rising, your pace is increasing.

HENRY: I’m not. I’m telling you that –

SNOW: I’m telling you —

HENRY: He’s saying this. I’m not.

SNOW: No, I’m telling you, I talked with him. Ok. I’ve talked to him since –

HENRY: Well, we’ll follow up with him as well.

SNOW: You better.

+++++

SNOW: Uh, that, in fact, you’re going to find that we generally agree on — we agree on the basics of the situation here, which is, there are armaments that have made their way from Iran into Iraq. There are Iranian forces in Iraq. These weapons are being used to kill Americans and we’re going to do everything we can to protect our people.

HENRY: On the substance of it, the briefers over the weekend said, um, that these parts are sent to Iraq with the approval of senior Iranian officials, and the bottom line is, he seems to be contradicting that.

SNOW: Well, I think what Gen. Pace may have been saying — in fact, I know he’s saying — he is — and this is where we get to the rhetorical question I was asking you before. Do we have a signed piece of paper from Mr. Khamenei or from President Ahmadinejad signing off on this? No. But are the Quds Forces part of the army — part of the government? The answer is yes. So the question is, I think this ends up being a semantic dispute about senior levels of the government or the government. And the fact is, the government knows about it.

HENRY: But is it really a question about whether or not you have strong evidence, when the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff seems to be saying something different than the White House, does that raise questions about how solid this evidence is?

SNOW: No, because you got — you’ve got — you have explosively formed penetrators. He says they exist, correct?

HENRY: Well, I don’t see that in this particular quote, but I —

SNOW: Well, no, no. He said that there’s, there are weapons that are coming from Iran —

HENRY: He says that there are projectiles manufactured in Iran.

SNOW: Alright, so, ok, so there’s no doubt about that, correct?

HENRY: Right.

SNOW: There are Iranians in Iraq. There’s no question about that, correct?

HENRY: Sure.

SNOW: Alright, so where’s the credibility problem, in terms of the — are you saying –

HENRY: In terms of the Iranian government being behind it. That’s not — nobody’s disputing whether it’s manufactured in Iran. That’s what you keep changing what my question is.

SNOW: No, no, I’m trying to clarify your question, because I think this is the –

HENRY: I don’t need it clarified. I’m trying to tell you — I know what my question is, and basically, he’s saying that he doesn’t see evidence that the Iranian government is clearly behind it. That’s my — I’ve asked that three or four times, you haven’t answered that.

++++

REPORTER: But it seems to be a reasonable expectation that the American people can have to get some kind of explanation for how you can have the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and the administration on two separate pages.

SNOW: We’re not on separate pages. The explanation is –

REPORTER: (Inaudible)

SNOW: Because everybody’s trying to get into semantic –

REPORTER: Yesterday, you said the administration is confident the report on Iran is accurate and the weaponry is coming with the knowledge of the Iranian government.

SNOW: With the government, yeah, and I still –

REPORTER: But now you’re says the Quds Forces, which is part of the Iranian government. You’re sort of parsing.

SNOW: Well, I was parsing yesterday. I’m trying to be careful about how we do this. The question is, do we know that some particular senior official signed off? No. It’s an opaque government. It’s not a transparent government.

Nothing the mouthpiece of Bushland Uber Allies says is either believable or true. The psychobabble gobbledygook and inane doubletalk issuing from the maw of Tony Snow is usually a pack of lies or innuendo, jingoistic fascistic propaganda that Snow’s masters have pumped through the conduit of Snow’s Charlie McCarthy grinning-ghoul mouth! That is why alert members of the white house press corps can invariably cut through the bullcrap Tony is excreting from his buccal orifice(mouth) and call him on his lies!

  4. veritas Says:

Snowjob Tony engaged in more psychobabble! He’s a total fool put out by the Bush administration to dry! He’ll go the way of Scottie - into a mental institution when his run at this is over.

Last year, following a nuclear test by North Korea, ThinkProgress repeatedly cited nuclear suspension agreements obtained by the Clinton administration as evidence of success in curbing the North Korean nuclear program, dispite the violation of these agreements.

Considering that North Korea has now agreed to close its nuclear reactor, and whether they comply with that agreement won’t effect how meritorious it is, one could expect we will see this agreement heralded here in the same way one from a decade ago was.

Well, you know where this is headed. Right? Crank up the smear machine. Limbaugh, Hannity, O’Reilly, etc. will be calling Ed Henry a pinko by the end of the day. They jumped all over David Gregory the last time he made an extra effort to get Tony to give a straight answer.

The only thing anyone would learn from your link about the markings is that they needed two examples to recognise english letters.

They could also learn courtesy of your link that non-english speaking countries produce ordinance with english markings just as the US has shown happening with Iran, however I wouldn’t bet on it.

Just remember GEN Patraeus was in Charge when the Al Sharqiya mosque was bombed in Samara not to mention the long list of various other mistakes and miscalculations but, what can I say he is America’s favorite Gladiator and Praetorian guard. He looks great on paper; lived a pampered and privileged life and checked all the necessary boxes. Is it any wonder when the appointed leaders in this administration can’t unite on a particular message? For unity and synchronicity they must have a common base academic background most only share a common cultural background and are unwilling to learn unless they are personally under direct threat which none are. In their minds losses thus incurred are well within acceptable levels and the true goal is the retention of land acquired. Any opponent to the current course of action must expose this truth and through detailed and rigorous debate force admissions to this simple truth. None within the current administration even have the slightest desire or inclination to thwart terrorism or establish a functioning Government in occupied lands. It isn’t they don’t care it is just entirely to complex to ponder. The privileged elitist we elect will always gravitate towards the path of least resistance which has always been to conceal losses, feign sincerity and concern, and seek a cooperative puppet dictator to suppress information in occupied regions. In an effort to accomplish these goals in this technologically mature day and age we will witness a massive privatization of the DoD and refurbishment of the SoA under the guise of some commercial apparatus that can confound and confuse the electorate. Just remember the enemies they profess to destroy are contributing directly to increases in personal accomplishment, wealth and power of the Pace’s, Patraeus’s, Casey’s, Sanchez’s, Abizaid’s so on and so forth. Soon there allies Abdullah Omar, Zawahiri, Bin Laddin and the like will make supportive statement of Obama or other Mitnagdim in the easy task of discrediting those that oppose the continuum of wealth and prosperity that we call “GWOT” or “Long War” or what the Oxford English dictionary defines simply as “War”.

I used to work in a VC funded industry, so that aspect is accurate, and I was trying to ask if the genetics stuff is accurate, so I am following Fr. Staudemeier’s advice … Comment by Jason M. Hendler — February 13, 2007 @ 5:31 pm

You didn’t work in Pharma though, so how do you know it works the same? Do you actually know the VC process for computer equipment is the same as it is for Pharma? Because unless you’re 100% sure, this is another example of Fr. Staudemeier’s advice to you. If you aren’t an expert (you aren’t), then maybe you should STFU! I’m liking this professor of yours already, too bad you learned so little from them!!!

boy, you attack women on a constant basis when you feel you’ve been wronged, but when confronted with a true testosterone male, you back down like a dog, tail between it’s legs. Yes JMH, you’re truly a non alpha-male canine, who’s only level of superiority is when he’s left alone with the opposite sex! But, in a battle of intelligence and wit, he discovers he’s really inferior, thus his hatred.
    Son, you need help!

And by the way, I’m not going away, so get used to it!

  89. hellinabucket Says:

JMH, when the Crichton thread runs I’m sure you’ll dominate but I believe this thread is on the theatrics and verbal acrobatics Mr. Tony Snow does to dance around questions. He was thumped today because this admin. can’t hold itself together. Gen. Pace stated this weekend there is no confirmed link of the weapons in Iraq and Iranian Govt. support. None. Mr. Snow was asked about that and he waffled and flip flopped more than usual. He’s the snake oil salesman you referenced earlier.

So JMH, man up and address this thread or shut up. I’m sure we could all bring up side issues that hold nothing to this subject that would equally put you into a shit hole.

  90. wake-n-bake Says:

  92. Bluestocking Says:

It’s nice to see some of the members of the White House press corps actually holding Snow’s feet to the fire for once and pointing out that he really isn’t answering the questions that are being asked him.

  125. Jorge Says:

“You live under the very banner of freedom these soldiers are fighting for and yet, have the gaul to side with the Iranians…”

That’s Colonel Jessup talking, right? I don’t see the liberties of US citizens threatened by anyone else but the government which is doing some highly irregular things which the founding fathers would have frowned over in a manner that can only be described as ‘deeply’.

I don’t know what the problem with Iran is. Why can’t Iran develop a nuclear weapon? Seeing as how they are threatened by the most belligerent country with the largest army [moneywise] in the world, wouldn’t you want to defend yourself?
It is not a good idea to develop nuclear weapons. It’s junk and very dangerous junk to boot, but to claim that Iran is more dangerous than any other country? Meh. The US is the only country that has used nuclear weapons in anger.
If the world is going to hell in a handbasket by waging war where doing something positive for the peoples of the earth instead would be a far more preferable choice, why would you want to limit the number of people who can play the tough game?
If actual fighting for world piece is something you truly care about, you can actually kill key people who are involved in waging global war. I am not making any recommendations however. I actually love peace, the real deal. I would sit down with a kid somewhere in the world and teach him or her something that would be of benefit to him/her for the rest of their life rather than burning onto their retinas the image of their parents’ internal organs splashing away from a cal. 50 round. I know that this dooms me to a fuzz-loving, treehugging communist liberal and death is to good for me, but you know… a genuine smile on someone’s face is so much nicer to see than the angst-ridden glare of someone who knows they’re about to do something unspeakable to a person they don’t know or worse, to have it done to them.

I know you want to fight against those who hate America’s basic freedoms, Mark, I just don’t know why you voted them into office in the first place. Hundreds of thousands of people have paid with their lives for your terrible, terrible lapse of judgment.

Just one question… I wonder where these insurgents are getting their machinists, the precision CNC turning centers and oxygen free copper billet? Oh, and those pesky little computer models for expansive coalition of shaped plastic explosives, yeah the ones that were developed with modern super computer technology… what did they just come up with that over dinner one night?
