The Davy Crockett defense of escalation.»

During today’s House debate on Iraq, Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) debuted the Davy Crockett defense:

Screenshot

davy_80×87shkl.jpeg

AKIN: Could you picture Davy Crockett at the Alamo looking at his Blackberry getting a message from Congress? “Davy Crockett, we support you. The only thing is we are not going to send any troops.” I’m sure that would really be impressive to Davy Crockett.

UPDATE: From commenter Mike:

I think Davy Crockett would be more impressed with the odd contraption that is sending him messages in the 1836 and why it was Congress calling when Texas wasn’t annexed until 1845.

“OMG Davy, u r on ur own, lollers ;) C-gress”

Digg It!

  3. BlueArkansas Says:

Except that the Alamo had no strategic significance to the Texian revolution, and cost Sam Houston some quality officers at a time when army morale had begun to suffer.

What’s more, Houston chose to send no troops in relief to the Alamo because he recognized that holding the mission was both a futile tactical excerise, and counterproductive to his strategic objectives.

AGAIN with the ignorance of history thing. Doesn’t anybody in office read books anymore?

  4. Barfly Says:

Irony abounds; this moron is living proof that those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it. Too bad the rest of us are along for the ride . . .

    FROFLMFAO!!!!!

Sadly, if historically possible, that would have been the EXACT message the US government would have sent!

  8. s Says:

How do we continue to let these bastards side step the fact that the war is lost? This is magical thinking we are battling. They think they have us over a barrel by saying “we never give up….only you weak traitor Democrats give up.” This is the reasoning of an infant. There are times in life WHEN NO AMOUNT OF WISHING IT OR SENDING MORE TROOPS WILL DO IT.”
It’s like continuing to do CPR on a person that has long expired …… Then when someone drags the person away from the corpse he is screams……”Another minute and I could have saved her!”

I’ll repeat my question. Why are we engaging them on whether or not we support the troops? They win in that it lets them side step the real agrument/question. They will not admit the war is a failure. That is the discussion we should be having. Why won’t they, Why can’t they, When will they? There is the wealth of info we need. They won’t because they need to feed their rich buddies that are raking it in using a “war machine.” They are corrupt. They are trying to stay in power and if they take responsibility for this war, they will lose power. They are trying to avoid this discussion.

  60. Paul in LA Says:

Rep. Rangel hit the gong today when he rebutted Rep. Hunter’s Iraq Escalation debate reading of Gen’l MacArthur’s farewell address– which he said he thought was apt.

    Rangel, up next, opened with:

“I didn’t come down here, my colleagues, to talk about General MacArthur. But I guess I knew of him better than anyone in this room.

“General MacArthur was called on in Korea, he was the commander of the entire armed forces there, and left us in the Second Infantry Division, completely surrounded by the Chinese in November of 1950.

“The last I remember, he was called back by the Commander-in-Chief, Harry Truman, for defying his direction. So with all due respect to the great late General, this is hardly a time to talk about what soldiers have to do when they defy authority….”

    (emphasis mine)

    Gong!

Since Congressional members of the Republic party like Rep. Hunter don’t resist illegal authority at all, they need heroes. Rep. Hunter wrapped himself in Japan, El Salvador, Poland, Reagan, and… Saddam Hussein.

Rep. Hunter said that people wanted “an Iraqi face on the occupation.”

Apparently he doesn’t know that the CIA helped install Hussein.

Something tells me the new Chair of the Ways & Means Committee will hold hearings on reversing tax breaks for the rich during a war, AND TO PAY FOR THE NATION’S COSTS, and not bring up his repugnant — though in some sense fair — draft proposal.

    Rep. Lantos was also great.

  66. Charlie Parisek Says:

    TODD AKIN IS A MORON

Let’s take his vapid analogy further:

In the first place, we wouldn’t send a handful of troops to some far flung outpost to take on Santa Ana’s army.

In the second place, we would immediately pull the troops after a careful assessment of the situation determined that they were in the wrong place.

In the third place, we wouldn’t have sent the troops in the first place.

    Todd Akin is a moron.

  67. Anais Says:

Akin is comparing apples and oranges. The two conflicts are not similar. As for the military service giving waivers to people with criminal backgrounds, the Pentagon will have more Abu Ghraib-type problems to deal with if the army and marines continue on this dangerous recruitment path. If you don’t have good people in uniform, you will have problems. The solution is plain to the American public: support our troops by getting them out of an untenable situation. Why isn’t it plain to Akin and the president of the United States?

  68. Hector Garcia Says:

Todd Akin’s intelligence quotient is far below 0.As you know democrat presidents have shown much better IQ than repugnicants.

That is NO coincidence.Akin proves statistics to be facts.

One just finished his tour there and will be sent back. and last but not least a covicted criminal. I hope these guys will make all the difference. Oh by the way they don’t have any Bowie Knives, Kevlar Coonskin hats, or high speed horses. You know the rule you go to war with what youve got not what you need.

  73. Lev Says:

Yes, the war is a failure, and Obama should not have apologized for saying lives were wasted there. They were and continue to be in an illegal and unnecessary war that has damaged the region, our polity, and our reputation for decades to come. I never thought we’d be as reviled as we were during the Vietnam era–and now it’s worse.

  74. Bogart Says:

Akin lost his mind and went off the GOP talking points message from Hoekstra & Shadegg. He was supposed to talk about “Islamo-Jihadists” as many times as possible for five minutes. But instead, thinking it is 1836, he channeled Davy Crockett. What an ass.

Oh my, the poor Representative’s Akin’ head, is something Fess-tering up there?
These theatrics, displays of faux emotion, and attempts at humor on the part of Republican War Party members are likely based on their hopes to have employment in Reality Television and right wing radio.

  79. PAL Says:

Perhaps they could try the “Chewbacca Defense”…

This is Chewbacca, Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the planet Kashyyyk, but Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now, think about that. That does not make sense! If Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must send 20 thousand more troops to Iraq!

  80. veritas Says:

America Support Our Troops which is precisely why we want them returned home from this illegal, amoral war which was based on a downright, bold-faced lie! How do you think they feel knowing their lives were used as pawns in the Bush Cabal’s Computer War Game?

Let’s talk about their moral, shall we? What kind of morale can one have when they are still missing integral components of weaponry after all these years? Let’s discuss morale when they hear that this administration used them as “pawns” in an egoic need to control oil? How will they feel when (if they ever make it out alive) they return home and realize that what they thought was absolutely accurate - that Iraq has been fighting a civil war for centuries and Bush placed them in his diabolical game of “monkey in the middle”? How would you feel being used like this for lust for oil, greed, and corruption? How would you feel knowing that while your family suffered from lack of income, the no-bid contract Haliburton (on whose payroll Dickhead Cheney still resides) is making money hand over fist and even stealing billions (where are those taxpayer dollars which are still unaccounted for???? - I suggest checking Cheney’s pockets sometime!)……

It certainly would not make any human being feel good to realize that they’ve been had by the very government they’ve been raised to believe was “looking out for their best interests”….what a joke! Just ask the still-homeless Katrina victims how they feel about this wonderful government of ours? Ask them how it feels sometime….

It’s “every man for himself” government at this point and anyone who still believes that this government cares one iota about their welfare, please come to see me about the sale of the Brooklyn bridge sometime.

  82. veritas Says:

this guy needs a coonskin cap to cover that mess of a nest up there on his head he calls hair! Bad rug is an understatement! Davie, Davie Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier…..but Akin appears to be King of The Bad Actors! Where did they get these idiots from? I can’t imagine what the people of St. Louis must be thinking……they’d have to be wondering how a fool like this (whose ineffective theatrics may win him an Oscar in the Comedy Category) ever was elected to office? Wow!

  83. Lebo (in exile) Says:

Let me get this straight… according to Rep. Akin–

    Alamo:Davy Crockett::Iraq:U.S. Troops

I’m sure his logic is giving our brave soliders a real moral boost.

  84. cynical ex-hippie Says:

Did someone tell him that the decision to not send more troops to the Alamo was a good decision? That Texas later won the war at the Battle of San Jacinto? That the militia went to the Alamo unilaterally? That if they had sent more troops into a quagmire they would have lost everything?

  85. mparker Says:

Davy Crockett died for lack of an exit strategy.

  86. Parrotlover77 Says:

Anybody listen to Thom Hartmann? That’s what I love about him: his encyclopedic knowledge of U.S. (and also world) history, and the fact that he knows to say “I don’t know about this period” when he actually doesn’t! Why can’t we have representatives with knowledge like that?

Instead we have this joker using analogies that don’t make sense and referencing a historical event by its folk song accounts and not actual history.

I got a great idea. Let’s ask the troops what they think.

Oh wait, that wouldn’t support the Republican talking points, now would it?

  87. Parrotlover77 Says:

AGAIN with the ignorance of history thing. Doesn’t anybody in office read books anymore?

Bush REALLY lowered the bar on that one.

  89. cirrostratus Says:

I don’t know that drawing a parallel with a historic fighting force wiped-out to the last man is going to be the most comforting thought for today’s fighting forces, unless you think, “you’re all gonna die!” is reassuring.

Todd Akin was the repugnant-repub MORON who said “Marriage is not about love. It’s about a love that can bear children.” That would make children born OUT OF WEDLOCK what, Akin? Can we borrow the time-travel machine out of the Vatican’s Vaults and use it to transport Akin back in time and switch him with Davy Crockett so Akin CAN DIE AT THE ALAMO and Crockett be put to useful endeavors, UNLIKE Akin!!!!!

  95. MOrris RONald Says:

All I know is it would be hilarious if Davy Crockett were receiving texts at the Alamo from Mark Foley’s great-great-great grandfather.

“Yea verily, our precious Alamo has been lost, but fret not, Davy, for be it ever thus, you roxors! LOL! Take great haste to lay your coonskin cap about my cabin!”

  96. Jason Says:

Shouldn’t our government officials know our history better than the general population?

Oh wait, if they did we wouldn’t be repeating history now!

    (Vietnam, Rome…)

  97. JPark Says:

Ok, so I am guessing Davy wouldn’t appreciate guided missiles either. What the EFFF is this guy talking about?

  98. JPark Says:

Only in MO could they elect this schmuck (well…maybe Texas).

  99. Schol-R-LEA Says:

This is funnier than most people realize, since, as has been pointed out already, it was the Texans who were the insurgents in this case. They were not fighting for the US government; indeed, they technically weren’t even US citizens at the time. Part of Houston’s original agreement with the Mexican government was that the immigrants into the Texas region would renounce their American citizenship and become Mexicans, and even promised to defend Texas against the US. needless to say, Houston wasn’t playing a fair hand when he made this agreement.

There is no question that Houston’s forces intended to convert Texas into a US state from the start. It’s quite amazing that the Mexican authorities didn’t realize this, but they apparently realized that they couldn’t hold Texas otherwise anyway, and Houston’s deal apparently sounded good on paper. The new immigrants made no pretense of fulfilling the other aspects of the agreement (converting to Catholicism, abandoning slavery, dropping English in favor of Spanish), either, which should have made their intentions clear if they weren’t already, but even at that point the Mexican government could hardly have done anything to stop this - northern Mexico was thinly populated, especially in East Texas, which was the whole reason they allowed the Texan settlers in the country in the first place. Chances are, the only thing Houston’s agreement did was to delay the armed response towards what was effectively an armed invasion for about a decade.

Still, the fact that the Texans were, legally speaking, revolting against the government they had sworn loyalty to was a dicey enough matter that D.C. was careful to avoid the appearance of any formal assistance for the Lone Star Republic for yet another ten years. Of course, for their own part, many Texans didn’t want US assistance; while most saw themselves as US loyalists ‘liberating’ Texas for the US, there was a sizable minority who wanted Texas to remain an independent nation in it’s own right.

  100. zori Says:

What’s Davey Crockett doing with a Blackberry? That’s a Canadian company. He’d be using a Treo if he was a real patriot!

  101. David Strong Says:

As I recall, everyone at the Alamo was killed. Is this man saying that out troops in Iraq are like troops at the Alamo? Who’s Santa Anna in that scenario? Where’s the Mexican Army? Why would the US Congress have had any interaction at all with anyone in or around the Alamo? The people fighting at the Alamo didn’t even have revolvers. Gatling guns had not been invented. Bowie had a knife. I don’t understand… Maybe we need some DeLoreans to deliver weapons from the future to our troops in Iraq, although I suspect they’d rather come home or at least have some helmets and armored humvees.

  102. Dr. Mary Ann Bell Says:

OK the quote is so stupid that my pointing this out is irrelevant BUT AS ANY TEXAS SCHOOL KID KNOWS, at the time of the Battle of the Alamo, Texas was NOT A STATE. It wasn’t even a country yet, though that was the intent of the revolution. Congress would not have had any reason to be debating the war. DUH. If you are gonna say something amazingly stupid, could it maybe just be historically accurate? NAH of course that is too much to ask. Davy would not have given a flying flip what the US Congress had to say anyway…
