OK the quote is so stupid that my pointing this out is irrelevant BUT AS ANY TEXAS SCHOOL KID KNOWS, at the time of the Battle of the Alamo, Texas was NOT A STATE. It wasn't even a country yet, though that was the intent of the revolution. Congress would not have had any reason to be debating the war. DUH. If you are gonna say something amazingly stupid, could it maybe just be historically accurate? NAH of course that is too much to ask. Davy would not have given a flying flip what the US Congress had to say anyway...

As I recall, everyone at the Alamo was killed. Is this man saying that out troops in Iraq are like troops at the Alamo? Who's Santa Anna in that scenario? Where's the Mexican Army? Why would the US Congress have had any interaction at all with anyone in or around the Alamo? The people fighting at the Alamo didn't even have revolvers. Gatling guns had not been invented. Bowie had a knife. I don't understand... Maybe we need some DeLoreans to deliver weapons from the future to our troops in Iraq, although I suspect they'd rather come home or at least have some helmets and armored humvees.

This is funnier than most people realize, since, as has been pointed out already, it was the Texans who were the insurgents in this case. They were not fighting for the US government; indeed, they technically weren't even US citizens at the time. Part of Houston's original agreement with the Mexican government was that the immigrants into the Texas region would renounce their American citizenship and become Mexicans, and even promised to defend Texas against the US. needless to say, Houston wasn't playing a fair hand when he made this agreement.

There is no question that Houston's forces intended to convert Texas into a US state from the start. It's quite amazing that the Mexican authorities didn't realize this, but they apparently realized that they couldn't hold Texas otherwise anyway, and Houston's deal apparently sounded good on paper. The new immigrants made no pretense of fulfilling the other aspects of the agreement (converting to Catholicism, abandoning slavery, dropping English in favor of Spanish), either, which should have made their intentions clear if they weren't already, but even at that point the Mexican government could hardly have done anything to stop this - northern Mexico was thinly populated, especially in East Texas, which was the whole reason they allowed the Texan settlers in the country in the first place. Chances are, the only thing Houston's agreement did was to delay the armed response towards what was effectively an armed invasion for about a decade.

Still, the fact that the Texans were, legally speaking, revolting against the government they had sworn loyalty to was a dicey enough matter that D.C. was careful to avoid the appearance of any formal assistance for the Lone Star Republic for yet another ten years. Of course, for their own part, many Texans didn't want US assistance; while most saw themselves as US loyalists 'liberating' Texas for the US, there was a sizable minority who wanted Texas to remain an independent nation in it's own right.

Shouldn't our government officials know our history better than the general population?

Oh wait, if they did we wouldn't be repeating history now!

All I know is it would be hilarious if Davy Crockett were receiving texts at the Alamo from Mark Foley's great-great-great grandfather.

"Yea verily, our precious Alamo has been lost, but fret not, Davy, for be it ever thus, you roxors! LOL! Take great haste to lay your coonskin cap about my cabin!"

I don't know that drawing a parallel with a historic fighting force wiped-out to the last man is going to be the most comforting thought for today's fighting forces, unless you think, "you're all gonna die!" is reassuring.

Anybody listen to Thom Hartmann? That's what I love about him: his encyclopedic knowledge of U.S. (and also world) history, and the fact that he knows to say "I don't know about this period" when he actually doesn't! Why can't we have representatives with knowledge like that?

Instead we have this joker using analogies that don't make sense and referencing a historical event by its folk song accounts and not actual history.

I got a great idea. Let's ask the troops what they think.

Oh wait, that wouldn't support the Republican talking points, now would it?

Did someone tell him that the decision to not send more troops to the Alamo was a good decision? That Texas later won the war at the Battle of San Jacinto? That the militia went to the Alamo unilaterally? That if they had sent more troops into a quagmire they would have lost everything?

Let me get this straight... according to Rep. Akin--

Alamo:Davy Crockett::Iraq:U.S. Troops

I'm sure his logic is giving our brave soliders a real moral boost.
