Hillary stands up to Bush on Iran.

By Faiz Shakir on Feb 14th, 2007 at 4:52 pm

Hillary stands up to Bush on Iran.

“If the administration believes that any, any use of force against Iran is necessary, the president must come to Congress to seek that authority,” Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) said in a Senate speech. See the video here.

Yeah, but when he does, you’re going to fold like a cheap lawn chair.

  5. Juan C says:

“It would be a mistake of historical proportion if the administration thought that the 2002 resolution authorizing force against Iraq was a blank check for the use of force against Iran without further congressional authorization,” Clinton said.

Hey, Hillary, IT IS ALREADY a mistake of historical proportion. The sad thing is that you havent said yes or no to that possible event.
But, hey, politicians know a lot more about world events than we the common people. Take Iraq for example.

  6. caserolee says:

Yeah, and then I will vote to give you the authority to do so–just in case the polls show most people want a bombing of Iran.

  7. Marie says:

For various reasons, Hillary feels she has to be “tough” when it comes to military strength. I understand that. But what I don’t understand is why she is so hawkish. Today she spoke of Iran sounding like Bush was speaking out of her mouth.
Is she trying to appeal to more centrist Republicans and is she abandoning the left-leaning Democrats? If Bush contrives another cockamamie scheme and attacks Iran, I think Hillary will back him, and that would be a mistake IMHO.

  8. Hector Garcia says:

Nice words…. now let’s see how many of the cowards ( democrats in congress ) do show the same determination to stop just another historical, criminal blunder.

  10. Wayne says:

Her history of standing behind Bush on the Iraq war is not easily forgotten.

    2003:

“I was thrilled that Saddam Hussein had finally been captured,” Hillary Clinton said in a speech to the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. “Like many of you, I was glued to the television and the radio as I went about my daily business. We owe a great debt of gratitude to our troops, to the president, to our intelligence services, to all who had a hand in apprehending Saddam. Now he will be brought to justice, and we hope that the prospects for peace and stability in Iraq will improve.”

She is pure politician, thats for sure.

  11. Jay says:

Her speech today shows that she believes in attacking Iran the same way Bush does. She’s Bush but pro-choice and tax breaks for the middle class. Bush-lite isn’t really what the voters are looking for right now.

  12. chimpeach says:

She called Iran “a threat”. I’d have been okay with “potential threat”. But, it’s wrong to call them a threat unless you’re willing to call Pakistan a threat, since they have nuclear weapons and a radical Islamic element, or maybe call Israel a threat to Middle East peace, since they have over 100 nuclear weapons and could wreak havoc throughout the region. We’ve worked with Iran many times in recent years. They were very helpful and actually sympathetic to the U.S. right after 9/11. This situation could be defused by ratcheting down the rhetoric and engaging in direct talks with them.

Hillary is guided by a fear of being called unpatriotic or weak on defense. So, she’s going to act like Lieberman whether she really believes it’s right or not. We’ve got enough people in the Senate making idiotic decisions because they’re frightened of being called bad names. We don’t need one of them in the White House.

  15. Badger says:

“Any, any use of force against Iran”. Sounds good to me. April 30 1970 Nixon ANNOUNCES INVASION of CAMBODIA. Imagine waking up to that in the Papers. All this Iran press attention has hopefully precluded a similar action….so far. Hillary is playing for all the marbles. I don’t know yet how carefull I want my president to be.

I think someone said it. Politicians speak to audiences, and they tell the audiences what they want to hear. I’m not ready to buy into the Isreali influences on the US quite yet.

  21. Wayne says:

    Another Hillary quote.

“In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including Al Qaeda members, though there is apparently no evidence of his involvement in the terrible events of September 11, 2001. It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons. Should he succeed in that endeavor, he could alter the political and security landscape of the Middle East, which as we know all too well affects American security.” — Hillary Clinton, October 10, 2002

I definately will not vote for Hillary.

  22. swordsbane says:

Bush doesn’t NEED congressonal authority to attack Iran. If he trots out fabricated or unsubstantiated evidence that Iran is supplying the terrorists, then the authority congress already gave Bush to fight terrorism applies to Iran. You can argue what the spirit of the current Military Authorization says in court if someone will stand up to him, but in the meantime, the troops will be marching where Bush sends them. All he has to do is whip out the terror card, which seems to be exactly what he’s trying to do.

What congress has to do is revoke or reword that authority RIGHT NOW! Otherwise only Bush needs to be consulted if Bush wants to go to war.

  23. Joefriday says:

Reports that were already discredited then. All she had to do is dig deeper, but she decided she wanted to be Hawk Hillary and went full blown in support ofthe Decider in Chimp. She has also been critical of those that were against the war from the beginning, Like Howard Dean. I do not trust the about face just as she decides to run for president. Look at her speeches before the Nov elections.

  26. dlet says:

Nice speech there Hillary. Now say and do something NOW about Iraq and the war that IS going on.

  31. Tracy says:

Did BJ Clinton get Congressional authority under the War Powers Resolution to take action against the Serbs?

  32. Bluedog49 says:

Clinton was simply following the law, Tracy. All treaties entered into lawfully by the U.S. government are treated as federal law. Clinton committed the military to Europe in response to a NATO obligation. And, Clinton didn’t have to tell the American people any lies or manipulate and distort any intelligence. The facts were right out there. Bosnian Serbs were attempting the genocide of Bosnian Muslims. It was NATO’s job to stop the genocide and Clinton simply complied with a NATO request for our help.

  33. Wayne says:

Did BJ Clinton get Congressional authority under the War Powers Resolution to take action against the Serbs?
    Comment by Tracy

Subject is Hillary not Bill, Tracy.
The Serb action was to stop genocide,it was a rightous action.

  34. Bluedog49 says:

Tracy, while we’re on the subject, let’s review: the war trials in Europe have confirmed that genocide was taking place and that the NATO action (with our help) stopped it. No American soldiers were killed in the action and the action was supported by every industrialized nation in the world including China, who’s embassy we mistakenly bombed. The Muslim community thanked us for our efforts in protecting Muslims. The war enhanced our standing in the world.

Can you site anything even remotely as successful with this illegal war your cult leader has lied us into? No, you can’t. The only thing you’ve got left is that Hussein doesn’t run things anymore but, oh oh, a huge majority of Iraqis themselves believe things were actually better before he was taken out. So why the hell are you even bringing Clinton up. It only serves to remind everyone of how competent he was and how incompetent your cult leader is.

Did the GOP support him in those actions? Or did they dissent and try to stop the efforts despite NATO treaty obligations?

You know Tracy, the one thing we can always count on is Hypocrisy from you neocons. I think neocon is an unfair title, from where we sit, you’re con men through and through – no neo is involved.

Here are a few quotes from the GOP on the Kosovo affair.

“You can support the troops but not the president.”
    —Rep Tom Delay (R-TX)

“I cannot support a failed foreign policy. History teaches us that it is often easier to make war than peace. This administration is just learning that lesson right now. The President began this mission with very vague objectives and lots of unanswered questions. A month later, these questions are still unanswered. There are no clarified rules of engagement. There is no timetable. There is no legitimate definition of victory. There is no contingency plan for mission creep. There is no clear funding program. There is no agenda to bolster our over-extended military. There is no explanation defining what vital national interests are at stake. There was no strategic plan for war when the President started this thing, and there still is no plan today”
    -Rep Tom Delay (R-TX)

Then there’s my favorite quote – from shrub himself!

“Victory means exit strategy, and it’s important for the President to explain to us what the exit strategy is.”
    -Governor George W Bush (R-TX)

In the double standards of George WitlessShrub Bush, Victory means an exit strategy that can be explained – except when he goes to war.

He he, thanks Tracy for the setup and opening. I appreciate your efforts in exposing the hypocrisy and anti-american attitudes of George Bush and yourself!

    Comment by Wayne

    I know, off topic.
    mmm…I am not so sure.

There is no such a thing as a humanitarian bombing.

  41. Bluedog49 says:

Juan: “There is no such a thing as a humanitarian bombing.”

So, you don’t believe military power should be used to stop genocide? When should it be used then?

  42. Juan C says:

    Bluedog:

In the spring of 1999, again without UN approval, the US and NATO bombed Serbia for over 70 days, targeting civilian and industrial infrastructure, as well as Serbian media. This illegal bombing campaign was justified as a “humanitarian intervention” to prevent what Western Media claimed to be a campaign of Serbian ethnic cleansing of the Albanians from Kosovo.

However, up to the start of the US/NATO bombing campaign, around 2000 people on both the Serbian and Kosovar sides had been killed with around a hundred thousand internal refugees in Kosovo. The humanitarian crisis resulted after the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), a terrorist organization known also to be active in the drug trade, had attacked several Serbian police stations. While the Serbian response to the terrorist attacks was harsh, it did not constitute ethnic cleansing, unlike the US supported murderous attacks by Turkey against the Kurds during the 1990’s (over 30,000 murdered), or the US sponsored systematic and relentless ethnic cleansing campaign of the Palestinians by Israel that has been going on for 55 years. It was only after the bombing started, however, that the humanitarian crisis dramatically got worse. Once bombs fell on Serbia, attacks against Kosovar Albanians increased and several thousand Kosovar Albanians were expelled to Macedonia and Albania. In fact, as has been noted by Chomsky, Wesley Clark, current presidential candidate and then NATO supreme commander, admitted that the exacerbation of the humanitarian crises once the bombing campaign had started was “entirely predictable. Despite the official intentions of the criminal assault on Serbia, the effect of the bombing campaign made things worse for the Kosovar Albanians and led to the destruction of much of Serbia.

  43. Bluedog49 says:

Juan, haven’t the war crimes trials of Bosnian Serbs proven that genocide was happening?

  44. Juan C says:

haven’t the war crimes trials of Bosnian Serbs proven that genocide was happening?
    Comment by Bluedog49

    Before or After NATO bombed?

Im not saying anything should not have done about what was happening. I think you have to use diplomacy and then force as an ultimate resource. If you bomb everybody, then you certainly will have a dead calm. Im describing that the genocide began after NATO´s bombings.

I know a lot of you have simpathy for Clinton, but the question that should be made for everybody is will you support every single one thing that that party or president did no matter what?

  45. Pennsylvania says:

Stands up to Bush! What a joke – more like spreading a smokescreen to cover up her refusal to admit she made a mistake on the Iraq War resolution.

  46. JPark says:

  47. Wayne says:

question that should be made for everybody is will you support every single one thing that that party or president did no matter what?
    Comment by Juan C

Nope, as you can see from my posts, I am critical of most anyone I think is wrong, Repuke or Democrat.

There have already been convictions in the trials for genocide. Yes, bombs kill anyone in range.

I still stand by the US supporting Nato action there. The Serbian action was to stop the genocide, bombs were dropped and some targets hit by mistake, but the genocide was stopped. This was an international action.

Too bad we never stepped in to stop the Genocide in Africa. Bush was too busy waging a war for his lies.

  48. ValiantVenusGrewFromUranus says:

Im not saying anything should not have done about what was happening. I think you have to use diplomacy and then force as an ultimate resource. Comment by Juan C — February 14, 2007 @ 8:07 pm

I don’t think anyone is going to disagree with your statement about the use of force. However diplomacy was being used, and there were mass and forced migrations occurring of Kosovo Albanians before the war ever started. There are also mass graves that have been found, as well as proof that grave tampering occurred from the Serbians when it became clear they were going to lose the campaign.

Most importantly, there is incontrovertible evidence of grave tampering and the removal of bodies by Serbian and Yugoslav troops; between 1,200 and 1,500 bodies were destroyed at Trepca mine.
    http://www.hrw.org/reports/2001/kosovo/undword.htm

As of July 2001, the Serbian authorities had announced the discovery of four additional graves in Serbia with as many as 1,000 Kosovar Albanian bodies.
    http://www.hrw.org/reports/2001/kosovo/undword-03.htm

There was the beginnings of a genocide and ethnic cleansing happening. More ethnic cleansing that genocide most definitely. But both were occurring.

Not trying to incite a riot here, just asking Spudge_Boy,I cannot remember if that game was the catalyst for her wanting to censor. I recall even the Republicans having a problem with that game.

    Comment by rachel kinnardi

All games Rachel. Its easy to find alot of references in “The Google”

    from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_Entertainment_Protection_Act

The United States Family Entertainment Protection Act (FEPA) is a bill introduced by Senators Hillary Clinton, and co-sponsored by Joe Lieberman, Tim Johnson and Evan Bayh on November 29, 2005. The bill calls for a federal mandate enforcement of the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) ratings system for video games in order to protect children from inappropriate content[1].

The FEPA would impose fines of $1000 dollars or 100 hours of community service for a first time offense of selling a “Mature” or “Adult-Only” rated video game to a minor, and $5000 or 500 hours for each subsequent offense. The bill also calls for a FTC investigation into the ESRB to ascertain whether they have been properly rating games[2].

The serbs did the right thing. Clinton, like Bush launched a war against Serbia. The reason they was France and Germany wanted control over Serbia via the EU. The Muslims weren’t gratefule for that act. In fact the KLA’s allies Al-Qaeda attacked yus on 9/11.
