Yesterday on his radio show, right-wing host Rush Limbaugh derided Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) — who is biracial — for saying, “If you look African-American in this society, you’re treated as an African-American.”
Limbaugh claimed that this statement meant Obama didn’t want to be black and should “renounce it”: “If it’s not something you want to be, if you didn’t decide it, renounce it, become white!” He added, “If you don’t like it, you can switch. Well, that’s the way I see it. He’s got 50-50 in there. Say, ‘No, I’m white.’” Listen here:
The right wing has repeatedly thrown baseless racial slurs at Obama. Earlier in the week, right-wing radio host Glenn Beck said that Obama “is colorless,” and that “as a white guy…[y]ou don’t notice that he is black. So he might as well be white, you know what I mean?”

The difference with Obama is that the smear on him has absolutely nothing to do with his qualifications. Comments like Limbaugh’s just serve to prove that racism is in fact still alive and well in this country. What Obama said is true and has been true for a long time. Let’s remember that it was not all that long ago — within the life experience of many senior citizens at least, which is good enough as far as I’m concerned — that a person who had as little as one drop of African-American blood was legally considered to be black regardless of what color their skin was. States were passing “One-Drop” laws as late as 1931 — and they were not overturned until the Loving vs. Virginia Supreme Court decision in 1967 which ruled that such laws were unconstitutional. Old habits die hard — and just because those laws aren’t on the books anymore doesn’t mean that people don’t believe in them.
In any case, there was nothing in what Obama said which indicated that he himself does not want to be African-American — Limbaugh may have decided for reasons of his own to interpret it that way, but this doesn’t mean that was what Obama and Limbaugh’s interpretation says more about Limbaugh than it does about Obama! Obama merely said that as far back as he can remember, he has always identified himself as an African-American — in part because this is how other people always identified him when he was a child, which was almost certainly due to the fact that one of his parents was black. What Obama was commenting on — which I’m sure Limbaugh realized but conveniently chose to ignore — was not how he and other biracial people choose to identify themselves, but how people in our culture choose to identify them because race is (unfortunately) still very much an issue for many people. In any case, Obama is damned if he did and damned if he didn’t as far as Limbaugh is concerned — and you can’t tell me that Limbaugh doesn’t know it. If Obama had for some reason decided long ago to identify himself as white, does anyone honestly believe that Limbaugh would buy it? HELL, NO — he’d be lambasting Obama for “pretending” to be white. And why should Obama “renounce” his race anyway?

1. Rush is not a racist, his world view is slanted because of his race just like ours.
2. His comment was about Obama just not defending his race by saying “Yes. I’m Black” he said America decided it for him…well I’m Black by virtue of my being BLACK. His comment was to show the ineffectiveness of political correctness.
3. I’m a Republican…and I support them becuase they say if you want to succeed you can do it. while (whitey) Slave Massa Liberal’s tell me I can’t unless they help me. That’s stupid! Malcom said the biggest enemy of the Black Man is the white Liberal….It’s too bad that many of you can’t see that. I can succeed because I am qualified, I am unwilling to accept failure, I will not lead my life as a victim, I am empowered, and I empower others. 4. The real question is…Why is Barack forced to prove himself to Sharpton, Jackson and the like while Clinton was made honorarily the First BLACK President.
5. I like Barak, I’m voting for him. Even though he is a liberal. I’m voting for him because he is a unifying symbol for race relations if he wins. And I can finally look at my Nieces and Nephews and say “YES KIDS, YOU CAN BECOME PRESIDENT!”

Obama did seem to be complaining about his race, about how he was just automatically considered black, and Rush was just telling to swith races if he was ashamed to be black. Also, he was legitamatly 4F in Vietnam, and he never said that all black quarterbacks are any good.
