Gore unveils Live Earth.

By Nico Pitney on Feb 15th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

Gore unveils Live Earth.

“Al Gore announced on Thursday a series of worldwide concerts to focus on the threat of climate change, with a powerhouse lineup from the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Snoop Dogg to Bon Jovi.” The 24-hour event on 7/07/07 is part of a campaign called Save Our Selves (SOS) — The Campaign for a Climate in Crisis. “In order to solve the climate crisis, we have to reach billions of people,” Gore said today. “The climate crisis will only be stopped by an unprecedented and sustained global movement.”

Don’t get me wrong, I love Al Gore, but I have to ask: how many frigging resources is this concert going to consume?

Aren’t we trying to be better stewards of the planet?

Oscar-nominated (”I Need to Wake Up”) singer/songwriter Melissa Etheridge is also on board. Her tour last summer was one of several that used the “veggie-oil-fueled” buses to wheel their rock show across the country.

Commenters like this cannot, will not, see the bigger picture. They clutch on to anything….however small and ridiculous to bolster their point and/or divert from the big picture. Any reasonable person knows we ( Gore included) must consume energy in various ways, as we try to solve this crisis. I suggest the commenter turn off his/her heat, quit driving immediately, and quit taking showers and using electricity……NOW. What an IDIOT. If I sound pissed I am. And I am TIRED of this kind of idiocy. 6 years of it has been far too much.

  17. s says:

Yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bushies haven’t’ paid groups to “research” how to effectively disrupt these discussions and paid others to implement the plan Here’s a hypothetical: Their plan: 1. Break the bonds between posters by causing confusion over whom is whom. 2. This causes distrust between posters through confusion and stops meaningful communication. 3. Disrupt the flow and development of ideas and discussion so that consensus cannnot be effectively reached…thus diffuse the power of the left blogs. Keep them divided ….don’t allow them to unite through mutual agreement.

And if you think I’m paranoid, just look at our government and what they have stooped to in many areas. The idea, on their part would be, to not let these blogs gain steam and become a united voice. One of the things that makes me most angry about the last 6 years is the tragic way Rove and friends have consciously turned American against American. They have stoked the fires and made us believe we, what ever side, are each other’s enemies when all along….guess who the real enemy has been??? My humble opinion.

The cure? Ignore any ridiculous comments and keep track of the thread of the discussion by answering the last reasonable comment you see. Easy. Don’t fall for it.

  18. Jim says:

I’m looking forward to this! With Al’s clout, me thinks the lineups are going to be awesome. And for the biggest cause that I can think of today other than Iraq.
Here is a question and I am by no means dissing Al Gore. Why is it that Democrats who have held high office seem to do their best work AFTER they leave office. Think Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton among others. Good and Important work. Just a thought. And I do hope Al wins the Nobel for Peace. It would be appropiate.

  19. DanMac says:

  28. Nik says:

#23 – eh, no, I vote because I like to decide who rules my country, but I’m more of a leftist anarchist, actually.
Yes, sometimes it’s necessary to burn fuel if it gets the message out, but as far as I know, airplanes are one of the greatest polluters – so it’s not far-fetched to think that someone would say “Cut back on flying” from the stage – but if they themselves had taken the plane to the gig?

If you think my remark was so stupid, then just tell me why.

  29. Granola Hippy says:

I’m so going to this concert. Red Hot Chili Peppers AND Snoop Dogg (I’ll skip out on the Bon Jovi). The only thing that could make this concert even better is if Jimi Hendrix came back to life and if the Wu-Tang Clan made a surprise appearance.

  30. Liberal in New Mexico says:

#2- I would imagine Gore is footing the bill for whatever resources his campaign needs and uses. I also imagine this series of concerts to be worth whatever the inconvenience may be, just to get the message out there and make it a very visible issue.

#30- Gore DOES unnerve the cons. They just don’t know how to take his rapier wit and intellect. They end up stumbling all over each other to try and appear “wise” and on top of things.

  31. s says:

Nik, the only way to reach a large number of people is to be in many places in short period of time to deliver a powerful punch. It is in order to get the message out in one piece. The 24 hour period is not by accident. And the medium they have chosen, and I agree with it, is a powerful one. Live people and live music. This is more effective than sending emails, doing TV, or radio. It gets one’s attention and communicates much more directly. so,art is powerful. How do you think they are going to transport these people around the globe in a short time without airplanes? It’s like saying don’t play with matches in the barn, as the barn burns. If we don’t act and unite , and fast, we are OVER. I cannot see any other way to get a live, powerful message out without flying people where they need to be.

  32. s says:

It is true that Gore is a great con silencer.

Wow Joe! Do you realize that you are putting your debating skills on display here and with a non response like that, you would get a big fat F! You said NOTHING to support your belief that we are experiencing global warming.

  78. TerrytheTurtle says:

The IPCC Third Annual Report says: “…global average water vapour concentration and precipitation are projected to increase during the 21st century. By the second half of the 21st century, it is likely that precipitation will have increased over northern mid- to high latitudes and Antarctica in winter. At low latitudes there are both regional increases and decreases over land areas. Larger year to year variations in precipitation are very likely over most areas where an increase in mean precipitation is projected”

Hmm Third IPCC report implies that warming increases evaporation which increase rainfall and snowfall. Can’t say that Lake Oswego has the ’smoking gun’ with that statement, but equally, a extra cold day or two in Chicago is no trend.

So human nature: when we are thinking about buying a car, we always seem to see lots of them on the streets all of a sudden. Methinks that some of this psychology is going on here: extra cold days and the Drudges of the world come out from under their rocks, several hotter than usual days and likewise, we start thinking about climate change. There is no recourse but to stick to the facts and look at the best conclusions there are based on those facts – its called the scientific method, there’s no belief necessary. If the facts don;t fit the theory, then the theory needs revisiting.

Joe I’m amazed that after I have pointed it out, you continue to display your immaturity and inability to carry on an intelligent debate. I know that without facts it’s easy to defend your position with smears and ridiculous charges. Grow up and learn how this game is played.

Actually you do – by saying ‘many scientists’ you are introducing a statement which attempts to weigh against the statements that have been made in support of the warming trend and its basis in fact. The evidence in support is the collected works of the peer-reveiwed scientific community, your assertion that this does not represent a valid concensus is solely linked to your statement ‘many scientists’. If you choose not to back that unsourced comment with your scientific evidence, your list of scientists and their papers, then you basically have said nothing at all and make yourself look uninformed. If you are doing this deliberately, then you are debating dishonestly.

Oh and I did back up what I said, by quotation and by reference to collected, reveiwed evidence.

The strawman part of this statement is the phrase clear thinking Americans – how many of these people have published peer reviewed papers on the subject or can document the proof that as Senator Inhofe says this ijs all a ‘hoax’? Remember without facts, all they have is belief, and frankly belief isn’t enough sunbeam.

You are a loser! plain and simple. Refute that with facts-I demand you refute that. Go ahead.
I am talking to you-provide answers to simple questions.

  91. TerrytheTurtle says:

Michael has decided that what he takes as Socratic method (asking questions to drive argument) is in fact nothing but counter-assertion of opinion (e.g ‘many scientists disagree’ ).

I believe my five-year old son has progressed beyond what is the equivalent of yelling ‘did not’, Michael may not yet have reached that point. The benefit of the doubt is extended to Michael for a short period, but well I have better things to do than to listen to someone yell ‘DID NOT’ at people on a blog.

  98. Luke says:

#92: You forgot millions of clear thinking Americans who don’t want this country roped into a supposed world problem that they don’t think exists!

If there are millions of Americans who think that global climate change isn’t a serious problem, this is because they don’t know that in the past 15 years there hasn’t been a single peer-reviewed scientific study that challenges anthropogenic climate change. And that is the fault of the mainstream media, right-wing politicians, the fossil fuel industries, and dissembling ideologues such as yourself.

  99. Luke says:

#101: And how many of people like you have published anything meaningful to support global warming?

And how many of people like you have published anything meaningful to support global warming?

    Comment by michael — February 16, 2007 @ 12:38 am

Let’s see now, to quote you: “No I don’t”. And here’s why. When I turn on my light switch, I know that I don’t need to know jack sh** about Maxwell, Faraday and Edison – and wow the light comes on. When it comes to any scientific theory, I can go and ‘do the math’ myself or I can read about other people who are smarter than I and have ‘done the math’. Now I can agree with their conclusions or I can say ‘That’s rot’ and write some science fiction about it – say where gravity doesn’t exist and people float about all over the place. Fun to read but not relevant to the real world.

Now you are asking me if I have published any climate science paper, but no I haven’t but I think I qualify as a ‘clear thinker’ who can see data fitted to theory, argued sensibly and peer-reviewed by people with the relevant qualifications…and I draw my conclusions from what I read about what they say.

By the way arguing “I am but what are you” is a logical fallacy called tu quoque. Not much better than assertions of opinion. You need to up your game Michael. My son’s elementary school would really help you I feel (that’s an ad hominem - I believe you’ve earned it).

Ohh.. another “sceptic”. Yeah we “support global warming” GO GLOBAL WARMING!

You are full of it and need to get out of your basement more.

The 2007 IPCC report is out! It’s been agreed on by 113 countries! Look it up sometimes.

Of course being the political work of consensus that it is (for 113 countries to have agreed with the conclusion, you can imagine the depth of sugarcoating), it is too conservative. The Saudis and Chinese were trying to wiggle the adjectives the most. Apparently the US delegation got a spne reinforcement due to the latest election results, good for them.

This is the same bu[f]foon that claims to have invented the internet.

The fact that you’re still peddling this phony claim shows that you truly must have had your head up your ass for the past eight years. This story has been thoroughly debunked, but here’s a rough timeline of the growth of the story back in 1999.

So, anything he says should be taken with about as much seriousness.

A favorite line of conservatives: “Gore is such a congenital liar, how can we take anything he says seriously?” Fine. So you’ll refuse to listen to anything Al Gore says. Why then are you willing to ignore the International Panel on Climate Change, the National Academy of Sciences, and the joint science academies of the G8 nations?

  120. Luke says:

Al Gore gives talks on global climate change on a weekly basis–sometimes more often than that. I imagine it’s nearly impossible to arrange his schedule so that it never, ever coincides with anniversaries, holidays, parades, snowstorms, and other things.

Cato Institute: this article is an opinion piece about the politics of climate change…OK it proves what? Dr Lindzen seems to have a few papers out but the acceptance in the scientific community appears patchy – he is one outlier in a broad scientific concensus represented by IPCC.
