VIDEO: Reid Calls Conservatives’ Bluff, Will Delay Recess To Vote On Escalation

Two weeks ago, Sens. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME), who say they oppose escalating the war, nevertheless voted to block debate on a bipartisan resolution opposing Bush’s Iraq policy.

Facing a political backlash, those same senators now say they want a vote immediately. In a letter yesterday to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Hagel and Snowe said they planned to block the Senate from adjourning for next week’s recess until a vote on escalation was held.

Today, Reid called their bluff. At a press conference, Reid announced that he will delay the Senate’s recess and hold a cloture vote on the Iraq resolution on Saturday. “Time is of the essence,” Reid said, and we are “determined to end the silence and find a new direction.” Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/02/reid.320.240.flv]

The Washington Post reports, “If the Saturday vote succeeds, Reid said he may cancel the upcoming week-long recess” to move forward with a full vote on the resolution.

Digg It!

Transcript:

The Republican-controlled Senate has sat silent on Iraq for four years. In the short few weeks we’ve been in session, we’ve held hearing after hearing as it relates to Iraq. We’ve held far more hearings than they held, which is easy because they didn’t hold any.

The American people put us in charge. We made it clear that we were determined to end the silence and find a new direction. We tried to permit the full Senate to speak on this important issue: escalation or no escalation in Iraq.

Unfortunately, Senate Republicans, including many who are now expressing concern about the lack of a debate, blocked our efforts to have the Senate express its views on this most important issue.

Just again today, we offered our Republican colleagues an opportunity to debate the president’s Iraq policy. And then, when Senator McCain raised his voice and said, I offered something in support of the president, with benchmarks, I said, Fine, we’ll do that: the measure that the House is debating right now, plus we’ll do McCain. They again objected to that.

We demand an up-or-down vote on the resolution that the House is debating as we speak, a resolution that says we support the troops and we oppose the escalation of the presence in Iraq.

We’re determined to give our troops and the American people the debate they deserve.

Now, we know that time is of the essence. That’s why the Senate will have another Iraq vote on Saturday. Cloture will be filed on the House version of the non-escalation policy today, for a Saturday cloture vote.

The Republicans then will have an opportunity to determine if they’re going to allow the Senate to vote up or down on this resolution, and to allow the American people to see how United States senators feel about the president’s policy in Iraq.

Kerry telegraphed the reality in an interview yesterday…

The question was posed – “Do you agree with Senator Clinton that the President MUST seek and receive the authority of Congress prior to taking any action against Iran?”

    Paraphrasing his telling response:

“Of course the President must obtain the approval of Congress before taking any action against Iran, except in the case of a response to an attack against us or in pursuit of terrorists crossing from Iraq into Iran.”

So there you have it. Telegraphed big as day. The PRETEXT IS PREORDAINED. Either there will be a case of purported “HOT PURSUIT” or there will be a false flag attack against US the likes of which will be so devastating as to warrant immediate reprisal.

Kerry just gave his approval for the Rockefeller/CFR Nuclear attack on Iran.

The claim has been that there are supposedly Iranin “Terrorists” operating inside Iraq. It would be might damn convenient to claim to be in “Hot Pursuit” of a group of these as they made their way back over the border into Iran…that’s what.

One viable “justification” for an incursion into Iran by Us Troops is “Hot Pursuit.”

If it happens – it was all staged.

    1) If you’re going to keep cutting and pasting that blurb, how about just sticking to threads where it’s relevant?

    2) You misinterpret what it’s about. Kerry didn’t give approval of anything. He stated the situation as it stands. What he said has nothing to do with what he wants or what he would vote for. It’s what it says in the War Powers Act of 1973.

Death doesn’t take a holiday and Neither should the Congress. You want a week off when you can’t come to a consensus on a non binding resolution opposing this Atrocity taking place in Iraq caused by Bush’s lies and the sanctioning of these lies by the 109th congress and the media. A resolution that means nothing. What have you done to deserve a week off? Our soldiers don’t get a week off in fact their lives and plans are disrupted by extended deployments and reduced time at home between deployments.
My anger is all but uncontainable. Go ahead murder some more soldiers and Iraquis for what? George Bush’s lies upon lies upon lies upon lies upon lies upon lies…
If my 15 year old kid ask permission to go to a party and assures me the parents are going to be home and then when I call to check some one poses as the parents and tells me they will be home and no drinking or other illegal behavior will be taking place. And then I give this son permission to go to the party but at 9:30 PM that party gets busted with a bunch of minors drinking and no parents present does that mean my kid gets off the hook, even though I gave permission? No My kid not only gets in trouble with the law he gets in trouble with me not only for the drinking but more so for the attempt to mislead, deceive, act in an inappropriate manner = LIE LIE LIE Even if he doesn’t call it that, that is what it is, a lie.
Bush lied got people in his administration to lie; SEE Feith, See Libby, See Powell, see Cheney, See Rice, See Rumsfeld, SEE Wolfowitz see, see, see. He got congress to give him permission to use all necessary force as long as Iraq was a threat. Does that me he gets off the hook? No he’s in trouble with international law see war crime. He’s in trouble with the country see Impeachment and he’s in trouble with any person who really gives a damn about our troops and the fact that their lives have been cut short , burned and dismembered mentally and physically. WASTED all for a mans arrogance and lies.
    DO SOMETHING!!!
Congress needs to in act binding resolutions that hold this man, George Bush, accountable for his lies that led to the illegal invasion of a country that DID NOT attack the United States.
You all don’t have any other options and please defer to those in your RANKS who were against this CRIME, Invasion, War whatever you want to call it from the beginning. See Feingold, See Murtha, See Kucinich.
What could you possibly be waiting for?
I read something about all that is left is for us to storm the castle with pitchforks and torches, and believe me I’m ready to kill Doctor Frankenstein. YOU helped create the monster that Iraq has become by not holding BUSH in check it’s your JOB (what you get paid to do.) SAVE our Soldiers, SAVE our soldiers get them out of IRAQ NOW.
Spin it any way you want, the blood of the dead in IRAQ our soldiers and the Iraquis is on your hands and it won’t ever wash off. Live with that.
    In anger and despair

  22. paul says:

Here’s another good one from Confucious.

“I do not want a friend who smiles when I smile, who weeps when I weep, for my shadow in the pool can do better than that.”

If those in Congress are supposed to lead, what is the purpose of this resolution.

The resolution reminds me of a concerned parent of a young wrestler before a match. The parent doesn’t trust the coach (who is having a losing season). The coach has decided the wrestler should wrestle up a weight class to help out the team. The parent is worried the wrestler will get hurt. Now, image this conversation (right before the match): “Billy, for the record, I don’t trust coach Bush. I don’t think he knows what he is doing. For him to expect you to wrestle up a weight class is insane. You will probably get hurt and there is no chance you can win. But I want you to know that I support you. Now, go out there an wrestle. I’ll be watching.”

This resolution does not help the war effort. It does not help the troops that are being sent to Iraq. This resolution serves one purpose. Those in congress that are not courageous enough to cut the funding or courageous enough to support the war (despite its unpopularity) can go on the record as opposing an unpopular war without the jeopardy of leading the retreat. It is self serving and the opposite of leadership. Cut the funding or get on board with the war effort.

Oh how brave of Kerry and Clinton–they stood up to George

All that has to happen is some trumped up crisis in Iraq, where our soldiers are killed, and it blamed on Iran, with more trumped up lies, and the two of them will vote, AGAIN, to support a war in Iran. Clinton has said Iran is some threat to the US, has she not? What? Iran has NOT THREATENED the United States. This is her AIPAC crumb thrown to them. Iran is NOT A THREAT, has not threatened the US, has not threatened anyone, except Israelm, who has threatened Iran at least five time by threatening to bomb them and their nuclear facilities.

Feh–keep your eyes and your minds wide open. If Bush decides to bomb Iran, I am willing to bet that these two will vote to give him the authority to do so, and will cite the “threat” Iran poses to the United States and will back any false evidence Bush puts out. NEither of these two wussies will stand up and state the evidence for it’s falsity. They have not done so on the Iraq warm, what makes anyone thinjk they will do so should Bush bomb Iran on trumped up charges.

What we need is a serious whistleblower and a media who will report the whistleblowing. Just a fantasy I guess.

  36. paul says:

SGT Slouch. Thanks for the link to Upton’s speech. I don’t share the sentiment of Congressman Upton. I read the speech. After each paragraph, I found myself asking the question, “If you really believe this, why aren’t you calling for withdrawl?” If more troops only cause more chance for confrontation; if the Iraqi’s believe that we provoke more violence than we prevent and want us to leave; why aren’t you calling for withdrawl? If you really believe it, say it. Call for withdrawl. It is my impression that Congress has had it both ways for too long. If those in congress are leaders of the American people. If congress is a co-equal branch of government. Then lead.

Complaining about the course of events as if you are a passenger is not what people sent you to Washington for in November. Pointing the finger of blame while making every attempt to pre-emtively cover your political tracks is not leadership.

Deeply ironic coming from someone who supports a very misguided policy of occupation, and a wrong-headed escalation with asinine arguments such as “if at first you don’t succeed… give up?”

Maybe you were born yesterday. Those of us who are a tad over 6 years of age, have seen the Bush administration not succeeding for the past 4 years -both in Iraq, and domestically.

Are you the type to “stay the course” no matter how many people die in an occupation that was launched for demonstrably false reasons? Does that sound reasonable to you?

  45. Goehl says:

    Oh gee paul…
Bush only stole the 2000 and ‘04 electon with the help of his buddies,

he has been involved with spying on America in which I feel he is using this evidense to blackmale congress into voting his way,

he makes his own law by writing ’signing statements’ at the end of a bill

we have lost rights with the ‘military commission act

    I know there is more…

not law breaking but jst as bad he means the opposite of what he states to the public.

And the 109th Republican Congress – they turned their back on everyone of these issues – their lack of over sight makes them just as guilty. They did not waste any time with Clinton and the blue dress did they?

You can take everyone of these statements and word smith them your way – but the bottom line – all here know these statements are true.

  46. paul says:

If he stole the first election (by the way, in a close election, he won every count and recount) how did he stay out of jail long enough to win the second election by a wider margin?

The spying program that everyone seems to be concerned about, applies to terrorists calling from outside the U.S. to people inside the U.S. That program, along with the ‘torture’ bill were attempts to prevent attacks like 9/11 from occurring. If another attack had happened (or does happen) people will be asking ‘why didn’t the President do more to protect us?

There is alot to question with this administration. There is a lot of issues to disagree about. But you (and many others) throw around terms like criminal and stole and lied without much proof. Just because you disagee with someone; doesn’t make them a criminal.

    Comment by paul — February 15, 2007 @ 9:40 pm

It is not that simple, but they would certainly be making efforts in that direction -yes, I agree.

You may not be happy with a ’stay the course’ mentality. But whether you like it or not; it is a ’stay the course’ mentality that delivered success in the American Revolution, Civil War, WWI, WWII,

This is complete, unadulterated bullsh!t. Which one of those wars was one of aggression against a nation that posed no threat? Which one of those conflicts involved occupying a country whose the population was actively fighting the US?

Don’t compare the American war for independence to the occupation of Iraq. That’s as ridiculous as it gets. Iraq is more like Vietnam and looking more like by the day.

It’s a stay the course mentality that could provide a successful stabilization of Iraq; despite the current atmosphere of doubt.

The current “atmosphere of doubt” didn’t start yesterday. It’s been four years and things are not getting better.

The American occupation of Iraq must end. Do you relish the role of a colonial power?

If Democrats had a better plan, they would be pursuing it.

    You may be right.

This has nothing to do with the fact that “stay the course” is not a plan, nor a strategy but a catchy slogan. That the occupation of Iraq must end, that it was launched for reasons that were demonstrably false, and that -in four years at the helm- Pres Bush has yet to deliver on the Republican promises of fiscal restraint, shun nation-building, and small government.

IF that is not enough, they keep doing the same (the “surge”), expecting different results. Does that sound reasonable to you?

They don’t have a better plan. It’s not as easy, or black and white, as you suggest.

I don’t have the time to write and essay, and I was responding to your even simpler take of “If I first you don’t succeed.” That is exceedingly simple-minded.

The Bush administration didn’t just start attempting to rebuild Iraq. They’ve been at it for four years. It is obvious by now Iraqis do not want Americans on their land. And when nobody was looking, the White House neglected Afghanistan.

But you are right -it will not be easy to untangle the mess the Bush administration has made in both Iraq, Afghanistan, and to repair the relationship between the US and its traditional European allies.

This is the administration you are carrying water for…

  53. Goehl says:

I resent the quote “Do the democrats have a better plan?” You hear this many times from the right as an attack or a diversion from the subject.

It was bad enough that we went into Iraq with ’shock and Awe’ dropping 4000 bombs in a 48 period of time. Months later the Iraqi people begged the US to let THEM reconstruct their country, that they could do it pennies on the dollar. It is common sense, folks are going to be happier being employed and working towards a common goal. Bush would not hear of it and today we have one ugly mess. So the democrats are somewhat guilty as they have no plan to fix this horror the republicans created?

Cut it out now. That’s so ridiculously wrong and I think you know it. I’m not going to run down the whole list for you. But, the British didn’t believe the Iraq-al Qaeda connection that Bush was pushing on them. The Germans told us that Curveball was a liar. The French never bought into it. I’m sure you’ve seen plenty of this information already. And right now Feith is being shown up as a liar who wasn’t “criticizing” the work of our intelligence agencies, as he claims. He was outright denying it and excluding it while injecting his own discredited sources in the White House briefings.

The only reason that Bush has been in office for six years is that the Republicans were in power and they refused to investigate or allow investigations. For starters, pay attention to the Libby trial. It’s already proven what we were saying all along about Cheney. Read the transcripts.

He didn’t lie us into war. He used the intel that was consistent with U.N., the French, the British, the Democrats, and most of the rest of the world. (Have you seen the Hillary Clinton Youtube with code pink? watch past the first 7 minutes). Comment by paul — February 15, 2007 @ 9:57 pm

He did lie with the help of Douglas Feith – this is already proven. The intel wasn’t consistent with the UN, the French, and the British intelligence was fabricated as is proven by the Downing Street Memo. The fact you would claim this is either an act of intellectual sloppy laziness on your part – or of flat out propaganda lies. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt, and assume that the comment Tommy Franks made to describe Feith also applies to you. Where he called Feith the Dumbest f*cking man on the planet.

If he stole the first election (by the way, in a close election, he won every count and recount) how did he stay out of jail long enough to win the second election by a wider margin?

There was no recount – that’s what the supreme court stopped. The recounts after the election showed Gore won – but those don’t count when the supreme court steals the election before a recount can happen, does they?

The spying program that everyone seems to be concerned about, applies to terrorists calling from outside the U.S. to people inside the U.S.

Actually FISA already covered that case, and there was no need to create a new program.

The problem we patriots that care about america’s constitution have is when the calls are between people in the US on both ends. That’s what the program in question is about. Everyone with half a brain knows this. Apparently you aren’t in the group of americans that have at least half a brain.

That program, along with the ‘torture’ bill were attempts to prevent attacks like 9/11 from occurring. If another attack had happened (or does happen) people will be asking ‘why didn’t the President do more to protect us?

Please, what stupid nonsense. If another attack happens, it will be because this administration is incompetent, largely because of incompetent people like yourself that can’t string together simple facts.

There is alot to question with this administration. There is a lot of issues to disagree about. But you (and many others) throw around terms like criminal and stole and lied without much proof. Just because you disagee with someone; doesn’t make them a criminal. Comment by paul — February 15, 2007 @ 9:57 pm

There’s plenty of proof that’s already been given on these points. People like you don’t want the proof or the truth though. You’re anti-americans that have more in common with radical religious terrorists than the average americans.

The real question here is, what is the propaganda? Are you sure that what you are spouting isn’t the propaganda that is being driven? “Bush lied and people died” is just plainly a poorly thought out propaganda slogan from the left, and anyone with half a mind knows that all too well. If Bush lied, I am sure that it would be emblazened on page one, top of the fold on every leftwing newspaper out there, on a daily basis, with complete detail. As it is, all that we can say at this time is “Bush lied and people died”

There was no recount – that’s what the supreme court stopped. The recounts after the election showed Gore won – but those don’t count when the supreme court steals the election before a recount can happen, does they?

Where are you getting this from? I have yet to see one reputable sourse actually claim that Gore won the recounts that were done by the newspapers in Florida. The only results I have seen to this date show that Bush did win. I guess I don’t visit too many far left blogs though. And as far as stealing the second election, awe comeon, get a grip already. These are national elections, where pretty much everyone knows from history, Democrats are widely known for election fraud, unlike Republicans. If you would actually do some research, you will see this to be the case. Maybe the truth hurts, but it is the truth.

Actually FISA already covered that case, and there was no need to create a new program.

Actually, your own members of Congress are on record as stating that this is not the case. None of the calls in question originated in the US, at least according to Nancy Poelisi, but I guess we can’t trust her statements since she is a neocon, right?

Please, what stupid nonsense. If another attack happens, it will be because this administration is incompetent, largely because of incompetent people like yourself that can’t string together simple facts.

I have a personal opinion that if another attack does happen, there will be hell to pay, and I think the persons held accountable will not be the administration, it will be the people on the left that were doing their hardest to impeed the processes that the administration was trying to implement.
It seems that wiretapping would be acceptable if it actually stopped an attack, but since a “whistle-blower” blew that amazing program apart, we lost that ability.
If America is attacked again, you can say goodbye to the Dem party, since they will be the party of weakness. Obviously, Bush won re-election since he stood for something. He was definitely a poor canidate, but I guess, he was better than the alternitive, at least in the minds of a majority of Americans, that much is indisputable, at least to people with half-a-mind.

There’s plenty of proof that’s already been given on these points. People like you don’t want the proof or the truth though. You’re anti-americans that have more in common with radical religious terrorists than the average americans.

Your proof is nothing more than far-left propaganda. Some may be true, but I would venture a guess that far more is not. As far as being Anti-American, who are you kidding? Anti-Americanism seems to be a halmark of the Far-left, definitely not the Far-Right. How many people can you name as being Anti-American that are Far-Right?, comeon, I really want to see this list. There is a truth laid bare in your comment though. People don’t want the proof or the truth, but I think you have the group wrong. I see much more venom every day from the left than I have ever seen from the religious right. Maybe you need to actually put your money were you mouth is. There are studies out there that prove that Right leaning individuals are head and shoulders above their left leaning counterparts when it comes to charity and volantering. Maybe if more people were religious zealots, the world would be a better place, ya think????

  58. Think Progress » Support The Troops, Help Stop The Escalation says:

[...] Tuesday was Valentine’s Day, but today is the real V-Day in the House of Representatives – Vote Day. Finally, after weeks of wrangling and days of debate, Members of the House will lay down a vote declaring whether they are for the escalation in Iraq, or for the Troops. Most likely, the House resolution will pass easily with bipartisan support and attention will turn to the Senate, where Sen. Harry Reid is delaying the President’s Day recess to vote on it. [...]
