Rep. Shays, Who Supported Withdrawal Before Election, Now Backs Escalation»

Two weeks before last November’s election, when he was on the verge of losing his House seat to anti-war challenger Diane Farrell (D), Rep. Chris Shays (R-CT) suddenly announced that he supported setting a timeline for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. Shays won the race by 3 points.

Flash-forward three months. Yesterday, Shays declared on the House floor that he would not vote for the resolution opposing escalation in Iraq. “It is counterproductive for 535 members of the House of Representatives and Senate to micromanage the war.” He added that the resolution opposing escalation “sends the wrong message to the President, to our troops and to our enemies. … The only way we should leave Iraq is the same way we went in, together.” Watch it:

Transcript:

The Democratic majority in the House has adopted a resolution condemning this strategy, expressing disapproval without offering any alternatives. Ironically, they offer a stay-the-course resolution. The majority is clear on what it is against, but does not say wait is for, leaving us with what exists right now, the status quo. The resolution sends the wrong message to the President, to our troops and to our enemies. It will not get my vote. …

It is counterproductive for 535 members of the House of Representatives and Senate to micromanage the war. …

The only way we should leave Iraq is the same way we went in, together.

And someone is surprised that a representitive of the Republic party lied to its colleagues and constituents? Yawn.

Boy, they’re feeling the buyer’s remorse up there in Connecticut these days, I’m sure.

Yeah I agree thats why I want to bring ALL the soldiers home TOGETHER- my goodness we should pull out of there NOW its enough already!

  6. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    Shays sez:

The Democratic majority in the House has adopted a resolution condemning this strategy, expressing disapproval without offering any alternatives.

This is a lie. There have been numerous alternatives offered by the Dems. No doubt the Repugs out there will counter that none of the Democratic alternatives are alternatives that will result in victory (cue the predictable chatter about ’surrender monkeys’). My answer to that is simple: none of the proposed ‘alternatives’ are even remotely likely to result in ‘victory’…the Democratic alternatives are merely more honest about this shortcoming.

  9. E_I Says:

Are Republicans screwing us or something? “We’re against the debate, and now we’re for it.” “We’re against the increase, now we are for it.” I think the Republicans are engaging in some kind of purposefull deception to mess up the debate in the House and Senate. Either that, or they’re being pressered by the WH.

  14. KRank Says:

Can someone explain how in God’s name this resolution seeks to “micromanage” this war?

I really wish lawmakers used the language with more respect and precision. But Iguess that would mean they would have to really say what they mean, and that would spell disaster for almost all of them.

  15. Bluedog49 Says:

Democrats who voted for this a-hole and for Lieberman should be ashamed of themselves. I hope they’ve learned a lesson here. And, why is it that conservatives can blatantly flip-flop over and over and not get labeled flip-floppers? The answer is to look at who fashions the labels: the media.

  16. Jay Randal Says:

Rep. Shays has always been a two-faced bastard. He is a traitor and the citizens of CT must demand that he resigns or is voted out of office in 2008.

  17. Janeane The Acerbic Goblin Says:

Connecticut voters are proving themselves to be the biggest suckers in electoral history. Man, Connecticut is almost as dumb as Texas! Nice going, morons.

  18. Janeane The Acerbic Goblin Says:

Connecticut voters have proven themselves to be the biggest suckers in electoral history. Who says only idiots come from the South? Maybe Connecticut is the reason it took the North 4 years to win the Civil War.

  19. Barfly Says:

Ironically, they offer a stay-the-course resolution. The majority is clear on what it is against, but does not say wait is for, leaving us with what exists right now, the status quo.

That’s the new GOP strategy; to confuse the issue by branding those who disagree as being “stay the course.” Taking swipes at the majority of Americans against the war will resonate with the 20%’ers, but will sound off-key and flat to average citizens. And his “The only way we should leave Iraq is the same way we went in, together” line is so rats-in-the-corn-crib crazy, someone should check to see if his pupils are blown.

  20. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) Says:

If Congress has the Constitutional power to declare war, does it not also have the power to undeclare (disdeclare, ?) it as well. Congress should vote on doing just that, using the original authorization for force as a basis for determining “mission accomplished”. Then, I’d say let’s go ahead with Rep. Shays proposal and end the occupation together.

  21. Wayne Says:

The only way we should leave Iraq is the same way we went in, together.

Whats this “we” stuff, I don’t see you patrolling the streets of Bagdad.
He also seems to have forgotten the ones that came home early, missing limbs or in a flag covered coffin.

    Bring them home NOW.

  22. Jane Reinheimer Says:

IF CONGRESS PASSES A “NO CONFIDENCE” VOTE FOR THE COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF, CAN A “NO CONFIDENCE” VOTE FOR THE MILITARY BE FAR BEHIND?

For sure, all those great pontificating, governators up there on Capitol Hill would be the first to tell me that I have somehow misunderstood the intent of their non-binding resolution.

They’ve set aside four days for a marathon debate on our military presence in Iraq.

But since every poll I’ve seen about the approval rating for congress shows a huge disconnect between Capitol Hill and the people who actually live and breathe out here in the heartland — and pay taxes, too, I might add.

In fact, I just went to http://www.pollingreport.com and see that the three polls that have been conducted in February show a disapproval rating of: CBS — 52%; AP-Ipsos — 58%; and Gallup — 55%.

What surprises me is that the numbers are way down from January. The January numbers show only a 40% disapproval. Guess the honeymoon’s over. Gee, what happened?

I’m certain, though, that the analysts will put on their best thinking caps and try to tell us what we should be thinking.

In the meantime, the great debaters on Capitol Hill think they’re great big hotshots and are doing something meaningful that the country will somehow latch onto just because they say so.

    Not gonna happen.

Rep. Marshal Blackburn (R-Tenn) says, “It sends a message of no confidence and no support to our troops in the field, weakening their morale while encouraging and emboldening the enemy.” (source: http://apnews.myway.com)

There are other quotes, pro and con, in this article. Naturally, I picked the one that mirrors my point of view.

I’m pretending that I’m a congressional speaking to the media. Tomorrow I may be more unbiased. Don’t know. It depends on the issue. But if this is only the second of four days of house debate, I’ll probably get more vehement as time goes by.

I just hope that congress doesn’t cancel the orders for bullets for our guns, or bulletproof vests for our soldiers in the field and sailors on the sea.

My prayer is that all these military people over there in Iraq come back home and run for congress and win those seats.

Then, just maybe, the American people will feel represented again.

In the meantime, you’ll be happy to know that Congress spent 11 hours in debate on whether to pass this non-binding resolution. They spent their longest workday under the dome trying to pass a resolution that is non-binding.

We can only hope they’ll do the same when something comes up that has a good chance of actually becoming law. I’d like to know what’s sitting on the back burner while congress is working on this non-binding stuff.

    yes katy?

  24. Jay Randal Says:

Goblin > CT voters got screwed because the vote machines were rigged for Lieberman and Shays in 2006 election. They won by vote fraud, but CT voters should have demanded an investigation of the vote tampering and jail terms for both of them.

  25. powkat Says:

A Republican lied to get re-elected - that is so not news. But I’m going to mention it to everyone I know in Oregon - because we have ol’ Gordo doing the same old tap dance.

  26. big papa Says:

    Oops my bad…

    …thought Shays was from NH…

    …but then again…

…NH has enough red in it to let the question stand…

  27. chris Says:

#2 is funny - I’d like to see the latter option even be attempted. If a draft were reinstated, the only effect that would incur would be a mass exodus to Canada. It wouldn’t get 500,000 troops to go over there, unless of course we decided to draft all the illegal immigrants in this country - which if you ask me is a better option. “you want to live in the US?” “ok, go win the war in Iraq and maybe we’ll grant you citizenship”

    hahaha

  28. tarazan Says:

He is not far away from 2008 elections….will he keep the 3 points to win next time around?…That will remain to be seen.

  29. Coffins Draped with Flags Says:

Rep Todd Akin (R) MO has just used the “Davy Crockett/Blackberry” excuse to escalate the war in Iraq. Wow - first their was “swift boating” and soon there will be “Davy Crockett/Blackberry” defense.

  30. Jay Randal Says:

tarazan > CT voters must demand that voting equipment in their state has verifiable paper trails for recounts in 2008 election. If they have honest election in 2008, then Shays is gone from Congress forever. Lieberman is there till 2012 unless he is deported to Israel as a traitor.

  31. GSD Says:

A dishonest Republican? Say it aint so.

  32. Liberal in New Mexico Says:

It seems that we CANNOT go out the same way we went in, since body bags are not factored into the equation by these “erectile dysfunctions”.
The people that voted for Shays AND Lieberman deserve what they get for being so stupid. Unfortunately, the rest of us have to suffer for thier idiotic mistake, as well. I just wish the whole stinking bunch would go far, far away. They smell up the place and disturb my quiet place. F*ers.

  33. GSD Says:

    Big Papa,

NH was the most conservative state in the nation back in the 80’s.

The last election in 2006 saw the Democratic Guv. John Lynch win by 74% over the R challenger. The two R congressional seats, Bass and Bradley lost to two unknown Democrats.

The NH house of reps gained 86 Democratic seats.

The NH senate switched from R to D.

The executive council switched from R to D.

NH was THE ONLY state in the union to vote for George W. Bush in 2000 and NOT in 2004.

    Give us some credit heh.

    -GSD

  34. Jay Randal Says:

One way to get rid of Shays now is for him to be outed as a closeted hypocrite Gay man. He is so fem that it’s obvious he is another Mark Foley.

Thanks for straightening me out GSD…

  36. tarazan Says:

#30 Jay > thank you for your words…I read few articles about Lieberman getting exact numbers in his last two election counts in CT.
Hard to believe in any odds game.

Lieberman will be there for sometime, but Shays can see the exit door, assuming here that all elections went fair, just like you said

It is up to people in Connecticut.

  37. Jay Randal Says:

Here is the DC FAX number for Rep. Barney Frank: 1-202-225-0182. He knows who is secretly Gay in the House of Representatives. He must out Shays, so the CT citizens can be rid of him.

  38. sofia Says:

Is there something in the water in CT???How can so many in CT be so dumb???

  39. Jay Randal Says:

Yes tarazan > CT citizens have to get rid of Shays in 2008 election, if nothing else can be found to force him to resign before then.

  40. tom baker Says:

I’ve heard this “congress shouldn’t micro-manage a war” (cough..”bullshit!”…cough) “argument” forwarded several times in the last week.

Isn’t what we’re asking for, and Congress leaning toward, more of a macro-management initiative?

Is someone in Congress saying “put those tanks over there, and move that supply depot here” and so on?

Is anyone actively calling bullshit on floaters like that? Can it be noted in the Congressional Record that, at the time the statement was made, exactly 0.00% of Congress had introduced a motion for “war micromanagement”?

Spudge > Lieberman has not voted with the Dems on anything since he got re-elected. I tried to warn Sen. I agree with you that Dems should tell Joe to do the nasty to himself.

  49. Jay Randal Says:

jimbo > Lieberman has never served the citizens of CT. He is a stooge for the “Military Industrial Complex.” Al Gore learned a hard lesson in 2000, because Joe stabbed him in the back to help Bush.

  50. chris Says:

to #34 - my comment was that ‘poster #2′ in presuming we could draft 500,000 troops was personally being funny. I wasn’t saying war was funny; a conclusion like that from my comment is nothing short that the type of ’spin’ I would expect from a dirty Republican.

regardless, my comment was directed at the absurdity of #2 even saying a draft would be an option. I don’t think there would be another 500, much less 500,000 citizens who would support that! Indeed, reinstating the draft may be the quickest way to get the US out of Iraq b/c it would either cause a mass revolt on the schmuck in the Oval Office or as I mentioned, a mass exodus to Canada.

and yes, you are correct, I have not served in the military, and I am very thankful for that. I value my life more than to risk it from some unjustified oil-war being promulgated by a rich brat of a President who hasn’t even served in combat himself. Indeed, I believe that political dissent is much more patriotic and valuable than fighting for your country any day. But to each his own I guess.

Wow, I’m also glad to see he’s for reinstalling Sadaam H.
Wait, oops, too bad, we already dcapped him.

  63. paul Says:

Politically easy: Pursue a non-binding resolution opposing escalation that is very unpopular with the public.

Politically courageous: Support the administration in its efforts to secure Iraq (if you believe it is the right thing to do; regardless of it’s popularity); or pursue legislation that brings the troops home (if you really belief the war is lost, don’t delay another day so more soldiers can die for a lost cause).

Anyone here that wants to lament Shay’s waffling on the issue, should also consider how Democrats promised to bring the troops home and now we are debating a surge.

This resolution is a joke. Those in Congress like to give the impression that they are leaders of the American people; a co-equal branch of government. Here’s an idea: start offering some leadership.

  76. David B Says:

I might undestand the re-election of Shays, but it’s Joe, republican dog, Lieberman that I don’t undestand. Thanks for sending this spineless dick back to DC. I thought you folks in Connecticut were suppose to be well educated.

  77. paul Says:

David B. Apparently Liberman was a good Democrat with the exception of his support for the war on terror. He was on the ticket in 2000. Is disagreement on one issue enough to be cast out from the monolithic democratic party? Republican dog?

  78. Raven Says:

Lieberman is the point man for a section of the population which practices Judaism, first and foremost. Who have traditionally been members of the Democratic Party.
However, in 2000, and again in 2004, the Republican Fear and Fright machine specifically targeted orthodox practioners of this particular religion.

  79. David B Says:

    Raven,
How true, and Paul, that’s at the heart of the issue. Joe voted more with the republicans in 2000-2004 than his own party. His interests are in Israel’s future not the US.

  80. DutchHenry Says:

My goodness you would think that the people of CT would have been more wise but to re-elect Shays & Lieberman tells me that the majority of folks in CT are shameless and without conscience, the staple of traitors.

  81. Hank Says:

    big papa…

…Do you know what TREASON means?…

    …can you type a complete sentence…

…or form a coherent though without spewing insults?…

And yes, I realize that I just insulted somebody, but it was directed toward an individual based on his comments rather than a broad group of people.

  82. paul Says:

Here’s some of Joe “republican dog” Liberman’s positions:

Affirmative action: In 1995, he stated that he is “against group preferences,” but in 2000 he recanted and said he supports affirmative action, and in 2004 he supported federal funding for women and minority contractors on highway projects.

Education: He has supported experimental voucher programs, and criticized President Bush for failing to fund the “No Child Left Behind” program.

Environment: He co-sponsored the 1990 Clean Air Act, and says the US must accept responsibility for global warming.

  83. veritas Says:

Shays is a flipflopper?? No! Hypocrite, Yes but bona fide flipflopper in the Rethug Party?? Now that’s utterly amazing. Rethugs speak with forked tongue - when they seem as though they have a conscience, don’t be fooled - they don’t! Amoral, repugnant Rethuglicans….shame on them for making such fools of themselves and smearing themselves in their own feces.

  84. veritas Says:

Evidently, one of the BIG THUGS got to Shays so he lost his cajones. Maybe he was castrated outright? Think?? Whatever his aberrant behavior, it’s obvious that he’s being either strong-armed or blackmailed by someone….”And only the shadow know”….

  85. Juan C Says:

And yes, I realize that I just insulted somebody, but it was directed toward an individual based on his comments rather than a broad group of people.

Hank, when you reach the tenth part of integrity and morals that big papa has, you will be a great man.

  86. BK Says:

Oh God on the Cross Shays get over yourself.
You change your opinion as often as a whore
changes husbands. A great idea, grab a gun,
do your makeup, polish your nails, and head to
the Front in Baghdad. Not on yet another of
your guided tours, but to actually fight.
Don’t neglect to schedule a stop over
in Tel Aviv to kiss your master ass on the way.
These thugs wade knee deep in Iraqi blood,
    and oil.

    Juan,

Thinking people realize that common sense today REALLY IS at an all time low with heavy trading…

Hank may have problems connecting the dots…

perhaps he will learn by being here for a time…

…but you (Juan) have been very kind (and appreciative of) my posts…

    …and I appreciate that

…you have obviously seen a lot of “real life”, and it is your duty (as it is mine)…

    …to speak truth to power

    Comment by veritas #94

    The Bushites play hardball…

    …I don’t know if you noticed how…

    …even the so-called veterans:

    Warner (Va)
    Hagel (NB)

and others who clearly reject Bushiva’s doomed “plan”…

    …backed down the other day…

…even voting against bringing WARNER’S resolution to the Senate floor…

    …they are all too interdependent…

…and the people (ostensibly) no longer have an advocate in government…

We should be so lucky to have Joe Libberman. Since Partisan politics is so prevalent today, and the Far-Left and the Far-Right hijacked the political parties, a middle-of-the-road person doesn’t stand much of a chance of getting elected now, since the primaries are so heavily skewed to the extremists now. There is NO way that Ned Lamont would have been a better candidate, all he had was ANTI-War venom, and nothing else.
The only people that should be recalled are these progressive judges that are trying to make law thru their embellishments of legal jargon. Leave the law-making to the lawmakers, judges have no place in creating law.

  97. Bool Says:

Shays is from Conn. and so is Lieberman + they have a republican gov. I think the state is a lost cause. Redneck valley of the northeast.

  98. tpartyblog :: Shays To Support Escalation Says:

[…] Shays, who supported a timeline for withdrawal back in August, has gone back on his word and will support the Bush escalation, using the most Rovian of language to claim that he’s doing so because… get this… […]

  99. We'll Meet Again,, Says:

Shays, along with Lieberman, are two of this country’s most pathetic men. Neither one of them would last the night on the front line, but they are both rah rah warmongers. There is nothing, I repeat nothing that is more reprehensible in this country. The people of CT should be thoroughly ashamed.
