FACT CHECK: Rep. Keith Ellison Never Called Cops To ‘Snuff Tancredo’s Cigar’»

tanelli.gif Yesterday, The Hill ran a story with the headline, “Rep. Ellison calls the cops to snuff Tancredo’s cigar.” It reported that on Wednesday night, Rep. Keith Ellison’s (D-MN) office called the Capitol Hill Police to check on smoke coming from Rep. Tom Tancredo’s (R-CO) office. At the time, Tancredo was smoking a cigar.

MSNBC’s Tucker Carlson picked up on the story and reported that Ellison “demanded that the officer march into Congressman Tancredo’s office and confront him anyway, which the officer did, sheepishly.” Fox News said that Ellison “called the Capitol Hill police on Colorado Republican Tom Tancredo for smoking a stogy in his office next door to Ellison’s.”

These reports are all false. Ellison never called the Capitol Hill police. Rick Jauert, Ellison’s spokesman, confirmed to ThinkProgress that he was the one who made the call. He said he wasn’t sure from where the “smoke odor” was coming, so he called the House superintendent’s office, as is standard protocol. The superintendent’s office then transferred him to the police. Jauert wrote to ThinkProgress:

I informed the officer that along about each day at 5 this vile, offensive and very strong odor began to seep into our offices. I wasn’t even aware of the fact that the Congressman himself suffers from seasonal asthma. … The officer asked me if I knew where the odor was coming from; I said, I thought it seemed to becoming from the direction of the Congressman’s personal office which would mean it likely was emanating from Cong. Tancredo’s office.

Jauert notes that Ellison initially wasn’t even aware he had made the call. Later, when he told him, Ellison “went over to Tancredo’s office to explain to them that he (Ellison) has asthma.”

Tancredo told The Hill that he has no plans to stop smoking: “If he [Ellison] would have [had] the courtesy to say something I’m sure I would have been more accommodating to his wishes.” But Tancredo’s spokesman, Carlos Espinosa, confirmed with us today that “Ellison did come by after the police left to ask us to stop smoking. But when he got to our office, [the congressman] had already left.”

Digg It!

Is that a no-smoking building? Who cares what the guy (Tancredo) thinks or doesn’t think. Everytime he lights up, call the f*ing fire department and the police. After all, we just can’t take the chance it might be some terrorist trying to set fire to a government building, now can we?

  13. hellinabucket Says:

What ever happened to no smoking in public buildings? I don’t believe you can smoke indoors at the Pentagon but it’s OK there?

  15. big papa Says:

There is a no smoking ban in all federal buildings…

…does the House office suites not qualify as federal (public) property?

…Tancredo’s al Crackkker a*s should not only be ordered to cease smoking…

…he should be held accountable to all federal and local statutes in regards to violating said ordinances…

…in other words: the bi*ch should be fined!

  16. Dale Says:

#12 and #13; whether or not to smoke is up to the individual congress-persons; they decide for their suite of offices.

  22. Parrotlover77 Says:

If you can’t beat a Democrat on the issues (which they never can), then just make something up to smear their character! That’s what has become of the conservatives these days.

However, asthma is extremely serious. I had a friend have such a bad asthmetic attack he almost died… and it was brought on by just a little cat fur. So, really, in all seriousness, Ellison has every right to tell that jerk to put out his “stogey” or go smoke it where it doesn’t bother everybody else. Why do some people think they get a pass just because it’s a cigar(ette)? If your BO is so bad it leaks through the walls, I’m sure somebody might have something to say… Hell I’d call the cops hahaha.

  23. tarazan Says:

The police told Ellison :”We know that you have Asthma, but when we went to Tancredo’s office, we only found ’smoking screens’…there. !!!

hey Dale…..wanna know how Tancredo got his name?

When he was pulled out of the vat, the foreman hollered:
    “Tank, re-do!”
But, as it was 4:59 P.M. on a Friday, here we are……….

  28. stanman Says:

Give me a break, this is just Ellison’s people covering up for the petty behavior of Ellison. To say that Ellison did not know about it, is ridiculous. Tancredo said that the police told him that there was a call as a complaint about his smoking and the police said that there was nothing that they could do because it is allowed in his office. Tancredo also stated that he opens windows and has an air purifier on whenever he smokes.

  29. Marie Says:

The reporter from “The Hill” who wrote on this also drew a twisted comparison between Ellison choosing to swear an oath on the Koran to Tancredo’s choosing to smoke a cigar in his office.
CNN’s Blitzer did a three minute piece with Glenn Beck yesterday. They mocked Ellison for Tancredo’s cigar smoke penetrating the office walls.
The building is no-smoking, but Tancredo believes he can do what he wants in his office.
Beck once interviewed Ellison and told him to “prove that he is not a Muslim terrorist” — now, we have Blitzer, the pimp, running this segment featuring Ellison, the racist.

  30. posh evidence Says:

Holy psychic friends, Batman! You read his mind and know the inner workings of his office? Amazing. Tell me about me.

I had a boss that smoked cigars once per week years ago. He would open his window (giant sliding glass door-windows), turn on a purifer, and STILL everybody in the office could smell it about 30 feet down the hall in the cubicle room.

How? Because cigars smell like holy hell! Sorry, Cigar lovers, but to a lot of us, they do. hehe.

And some of it will always leak into adjacent rooms. not to mention that when it goes out the window it doesn’t just magically difuse immediately. It can get picked up into air intakes for air conditioning/heating and get recycled all over the building.

From the story, Tancredo sounds like the petty one. Wah wah I’ll smoke if i WANT to smoke, your health and comfort be damned! Wah wah!

Go home and smoke that stanky thing, damn. There’s a reason smoking is banned in most public buildings. Why on earth it’s allowed in Congress is beyond me. Must be some “good ol’ boys” club thing.

Why were the cops called and not the fire dept if there was a strange smoke odor. It is petty to call the cops and not be a man and say something to Tancredo’s face.

  35. paul Says:

This story is sterotypically symbolic of the differences between Conservatives and Progressives. The Republican sits around smoking smelly cigars without regard for his neighbors. The Democrat has some affliction (asthma) that requires special consideration; then calls the authority to rectify the situation.

You really should have an apostrophe before the last s on Bushs to show ownership of the mandate. Since you are showing grammar errors, I thought you would like to know about that.

He’s only been in office for 6 years.

What do you think now genius?

  38. Raven Says:

very succinctly put paul, and so true.
perhaps the answer is for the republican to become an independent, and begin to care about others, and for the democrat to become an independent, and quit having so many afflictions…

Calling the Police to investigate a strange smell (remember, the assistant didn’t know it was a Cigar to start) is petty? What if it was some strange chemical leak, fire, or something dangerous?

*Gasp* What if it was an Iranian bioterrorist threat?!?!?!

Can’t beat them on the issues, resort to personal attacks.

Only this one is really strange.

Next week: Ellison blamed for not offering Tancredo a slice of the pizza he ordered late one night. He should have knocked on his office and given him a slice, but the uncaring bastard hogged it all himself! The horrors!

Meanwhile, hundreds more innocents die in Bush’s occupation of Iraq. But this story is MUCH more important than that.

To add my two cents: Our 18yo is asthmatic, and everytime there is a wild fire (even in the hills several miles away), or when the air quality is not so great for other reasons, he has difficulties breathing.

For someone who suffers from asthma, being close to someone who is smoking is really uncomfortable.

Once again, Tancredo has shown himself to be an ass, unable to extend a minimum amount of professional courtesy.

Is that a prerequisite to become a card-carrying Republican nowadays?

He went over to his car (which had a Bush ‘04 sticker) and called the cops. The cops came and approached my table at which point the manager came running over and talked to them. Funny enough, that story also involved smoking, and a federal building.

  74. tarazan Says:

#78 Spudge_Boy >….( Congressional offices are the only public places in Washington DC where you can legally smoke, Why).

    ——————————————————
Why?, because Congress members don not truly represent the average guy. One more example is that they do not pay Social Security, while all Americans do.
Their incomes are 5 times the average of people whom they represent.

Also their retirement system matches nothing like outside the US Capitol bldg.

So, they can smoke inside..while others they can’t do the same in Washington DC.

  75. Bluestocking Says:

MSNBC’s Tucker Carlson picked up on the story and reported that Ellison “demanded that the officer march into Congressman Tancredo’s office and confront him anyway, which the officer did, sheepishly.” Fox News said that Ellison “called the Capitol Hill police on Colorado Republican Tom Tancredo for smoking a stogy in his office next door to Ellison’s.”

    ***************************************

This is one of the biggest problems with the mainstream media these days, but it’s a particular failing of Fox News and conservative-minded commentators such as Carlson. News reporting has become like the old party game called “Telephone” — journalists are reporting what they subjectively hear and not necessarily what is actually said to them or what the facts are. Did MSNBC or Fox News even make an effort to call the Capitol Hill Police to find out what the actual facts were before reporting the story? Based on the fact that the story they reported is inaccurate, it’s fairly clear that they didn’t. No…what Carlson and the people at Fox News did was report what they wanted, assumed, believed, and/or conjectured to be true as if it were true — but it wasn’t true, and they didn’t even bother to find out whether it was true or not before reporting it because they were predisposed to believe the worst of Congressman Ellison and all too eager to report a story which would make him look bad.

He is the quintescential “token” office holder. He will be talked about for a long, long time as the “token muslim” who accomplished absolutely nothing for his party. A seat warmer to keep Muslims on the welfare roles and the voting roles.

We are moving closer to full out Communism everyday. All thanks to Democrats.

Communism is the direct result of corruption in Capitalism - so, in reality, it is the neocons who are responsible for it occuring or not occuring.

If they don’t get too greedy, there’s no reason for the middle class to revolt.

Therefore - if we become Communistic, it is the neocon’s fault for being greedy pigs, not the Democrats.

The more the GOP can get people to talk about this petty shit, the less they need to talk about and explain their support for a failed President and his failed policies.

Spudge_Boy. I live in the south (I’m sure your surprised). I just wanted you to know I appreciate your term ‘red neckedy’ and will begin using it as much as I can to describe the offensive behavior of my friends and neighbors. Kudos.

  81. AboveTheClouds Says:

Communists? My Rove/GOP memo said it was “Islamo-fascists” I was supposed to hate.

I am glad to see we have elected officials who are not afraid to take these Muslims on, man to man, and face to face.

    We love you Tancredo!!

  83. Virginia if for Lovers - NOT FOR MUSLIMS!! Says:

Tom Tancredo and Dick Durbin are blood relatives. Fact. Look at the resemblence in their photos. Plus you can also google:

    Tancredo Durbin related blood relatives

    Have fun.

I am glad to see we have elected officials who are not afraid to take these Muslims on, man to man, and face to face.

    We love you Tancredo!!

I would like to see a doctors excuse from Ellison himself as long as we are playing “hall monitor” in Congress these days. How petty of Ellison.

This is what happens when a “token” congressman gets elected. Nothing better to do than swat flies all day.

And bitch about “supposed” tobacco smoke. Can you say…Token Muslim Islamist Congressman?

Gee, you say that is if you know what you’re talking about. Someday maybe you will. Not today, though.

  86. chimpeach Says:

Tancredo and Limbaugh just enjoy sucking on long hard cylindrical objects and it really pisses them off when somebody tries to get them to stop. I suppose they could be doing worse things with them.

Please stop having sex with your parents, siblings and children…

…you’re producing a line of morons who are detrimental to the social fabric…

…incest is immoral, disgusting, and an abomination…

…too many families in Virginia (and throughout the “dirty” TREASONOUS confederate flag loving south)…

…practice this disgraceful form of procreation…

Virginia is for Lovers is obviously a product of an incestuous relationship…

…and cannot be held responsible for its ignorance and stupidity…

  88. VerbalKint Says:

Wow. It looks like the racists are coming out of the woodwork here. They are scurrying around like cockroaches.

Shoo, freaks. Crawl back into your holes.

  89. Placitasroy Says:

I called Tancredo’s office and cracked up one of his male staffers. Very politicely i introduced myself and continued- “I’ve got a questioon only the congressman can answer: “Is it truth that there is an inverse correlation between the size of the cigar and the size of the dick.”
He was barely able to choke a “thanks for callng.”

  90. Vincent Says:

What a waste of time on the news. Damn it, it knocked off coverage of Anna Nicole Smith for a minute or so. I needed more of that instead of coverage of less important goings-on.

  91. Hetero Ted Says:

How’s she doing, anyway, will she recover?
(Been away for a few days….)
Just curious, now that I have been healed.

  92. Anthony Cumia Says:

Gees….you can’t smoke a cigar in your own office?

What’s next…some woman with fat ankles will want to be president?

What’s this country coming to? Bill Clinton put a cigar in that Jew’s c*nt, but Tancredo cannot smoke one?

  93. Jim Dodd Says:

You seem to be splitting hairs - a distinction without difference. I hold Bush responsible for the crimes of his subordinates - same goes here. Ellison’s - or staff - action was inappropriate. Keep in mind that Tancredo supported Ellison’s use of the Quoran to take the oath of office.

  94. notimpressedwiththeUS Says:

    Thouhgt = ThouGHt
    Sulpher = SulphUR

    No more needs said really.
    Nuff said.

    Comment by Liberal Hearts Terrorists

Gee LHT, you are soooo smart. You actually know how to spell, somewhat. But since we’re on the subject, the phrase should be “no more need be said” and also, the word is ENOUGH , not nuff. :>D

  95. darraugh Says:

Tancredo and the other congressmen are allowed to smoke in their
offices. And who is the dummy who doesn’t know cigar smoke. This is really petty. Instead of mudslinging why don’t you put out the issues? Yes run Edwards who won’t be mean to US citizens like Billary, Gore and Biden etc.

  96. Gordon Says:

How does this a-hole get to smoke his big fat stinking stogie in his office when half the country has ordinances that have disallowed smoking in all public buildings?

  97. J. Shipp Says:

Get a grip people (commentors)…. the Congress has exempted themselves from Federal non-smoking laws/regulations and are subject to their own “rules.” Congressmen may smoke in their own offices if they so desire. Here we have an example of a neighbor not communicating their objection in a collegial manner and working out a solution before making a big stink with the Capitol Police.

Dear God, give me break! These children need to grow up and quit playing every incident to the media.

Sorry Congressman Ellison, the buck stops with YOU. Don’t lay this off on one of your staffers. If a staffer took it upon himself to generate this childish dispute, he should be disciplined. This is something that I would expect from the Republicans. I would want my Representative to be more adult.

  98. Amanda nails Tancredo Cigargate story at Greg Laden Says:

[…] FACT CHECK: Rep. Keith Ellison Never Called Cops To ‘Snuff Tancredo’s Cigar’ […]

  99. Not a Dhimmi Says:

So what now Ellison, did CAIR tell you cigars where outlawed under Sharia law?

  100. Jill Says:

What is the world coming to when an obviously closeted Congressman isn’t allowed to fellate a big stinking cigar in his own office because the guy in the next office down wants to be able to breathe?

  101. G. Chell Says:

Hope Tancredo continues to smoke and gets some lung disease as Charlie Norwood got.
